Title: The Sports Guy's Top Sports DVDs
Post by: gonz on Dec 22, 2001 at 02:07 AM
You're a guy.  You like DVDs.  You like sports.  Then you must read this:

The Boston Sports Guy is one of the funniest sports columnists alive.  You don't believe me?  Then what else would you call the man who is writing the biography of Russian Olympic boxing hero Ivan Drago, entitled "I Must Break You: The Life and Times of the Siberian Express"?  If that isn't pure comic genius, I don't know what is.

And now The Sports Guy weighs in with his top 15 sports DVDs (http://espn.go.com/page2/s/simmons/011220.html).

It's all good, man.

(Thanks, Titus)

I'm hot off the rtrail for Jerry Maguire, hinihintay ko lang yung special edition.
During my Elementary/ HS day I used to play Football at lagi itong Victory and pinapanood sa amin para ma inspire kami sa game.  Pele then was our Michael Jordan sa sports namin.

Gonz, kakaaliw itong link na ito. salamatski. ;D

Hi Guys,

What are the great sports movies out there.  The common ones are there (Any Given Sunday, Tin Cup, etc.) but how about the old ones.  Here are the ones I really want:

One On One (Robbie Benson)
Hoosiers
Bad News Bears
The Natural (yeah it coming out already :D)
Major League
Slap Shot

I'm not really into sports but I'm a sucker for predictable sports movies. My Remember The Titans DVD is one of my favorite DVDs. The following is a list of sports themed movies I've enjoyed but don't have on DVD. I guess it's something about sports and feel good endings that make me want to turn off my brain for a few hours:

That's just a partial list I can come up with. I hope that some of the other guys here can remind me of other good sports movies.

gonz - I'm still not sure if this topic belongs here or in the Film & TV Talk forum. I guess we should wait and see how the thread progresses before deciding.

Hi guys,

How about autosports?  I'm a fan of car racing so I would recommend Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.  It's a has great action as you would expect from any Bruckheimer film.  Plus the racing scenes make good use of your surround speakers and subs.

I would also recommend a DVD IMAX film called Super
Speedway which is a great way to test your 5.1 system.  If you haven't seen it then I highly suggest you check it out.

The best basketball movie ever is Hoop Dreams.  The filmmakers followed two talented inner-city high school basketball players for five years -- as they went through college ball and the wild wooly world of the NBA draft.  This film is an unflinching look at how the urban poor cling to their hoop dreams as a way to rise up from the gutter, and the things they will endure to achieve their dreams.

Unfortunately it's not on DVD yet.

Some other sports movies and documentaries  I've enjoyed:

Best baseball movie ever, Bull Durham
Best sports themed romantic movie, The Cutting Edge
Best boxing movie ever, Raging Bull
Best golf movie ever, Tin Cup

Was the Larry Bird movie a documentary?  If so where have you seen it?  Larry bird is my ultimate idol.

Hi Godfather, and welcome to the forum!  Always glad to meet another Bird fan.

Larry Bird: A Basketball Legend was a 1991 documentary produced by NBA Entertainment Inc. and released by Fox Video.  It's not on DVD yet, but with the rash of recent NBA DVD releases, we can only hope that older NBA films will be re-released in the format as well.

My wife's family and I were all huge Larry Bird fans, so naturally that video is in our collection of Bird/Celtics memorabilia.

In the meantime, you can order the VHS from Amazon:

Larry Bird: A Basketball Legend (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305337837/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20)

As a Bird/Celtics fan, you might also want to check out NBA Dynasty Renewed 1981 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305338906/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20), NBA Pride and Passion 1984 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305338876/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20) and Bosto
n Celtics 86-87: Home of the Brave/Sweet Sixteen (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305338825/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20).

Larry rules! ;)

I don't think Ice Castles is out on DVD yet.

Varsity Blues was ok .. not that great. I had a great time watching James Caan's son in his nakedness though. He is such a hottie.  ;)

Thanks DVDgurl I'll look up Ice Castles (I'm such a sucker for these movies)

The other day I was watching Any Given Sunday on DVD.  The first time I watched it was at Glorietta 4 and I must say it's so much more bone crunching at home than at the theater.  Excellent DVD

Mentioned this before, but with the release of Michael Mann's Ali, sports fans are well advised to check out When We Were Kings (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/630451493X/ref=ase_pinoydvd-20), an Oscar-winning documentary about the 1971 Ali-Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle" in Kinshasa, Zaire, an all-time classic heavyweight fight that ushered in the glamor years of pro boxing.

speaking of larry bird (who by the way has the same birthday as i do) there was this instructional video that i watched "red on roundball" where red aurbach (legendary celtics coach) teaches the basic of basketball.

of course his demo person is larry bird.

u get to see larry bird teach shooting and u can marvel at his amazing accuracy!

he even shows 6 angle shots off the backboard standing in the same spot!! WOW!!!

dunno if it's still available though.

The Replacements. Funny football movie, and as Phobos says, you can shut down your brain for this one.

Michael Jordan to the Max.  IMAX documentary on MJ, DVD version is nice but was really made for the 100 foot IMAX screens to be enjoyed fully

Raging Bull - Martin Scorsese directed Robert De Niro (in his Oscar-winning role) who played Jake La Motta who fought Sugar Ray Robinson and all his (La Motta's) demons.

The Color of Money - Wouldn't have called this a sports-themed film two years ago, but with pool in the sports limelight I suppose that's what it can also be called now. I consider this bare-bones DVD a real gem. No one ever talks about it, but it satisfies the movie lover in me more than several special editions. Features Paul Newman at the absolute peak of his powers. Well, what do you know, I just looked at it and it's also from Scorsese.

I have a stack of NBA DVDs, and the best one is NBA's 100 Greatest Plays. If you like the weekly top 10 plays, well, here's more than a hundred of them. Havlicek stole the ball, Bird stole the ball, Dr. J does the impossible, etc. They still missed a number of my favorite plays, but it's a good disc.

I think most sports themed dvds,or movies for that matter deal with baseball. It is a popular sport in Hollywood and in America.

I hope Bull Durham gets a decent DVD treatment next time around.

Has anyone seen 61*? It's an HBO original movie now available on DVD. It's a story of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle and their chase for Babe Ruth's home run record. Thomas Jane from Deep Blue Sea and Barry Pepper from Saving Private Ryan are the leads. A fine movie even if you don't understand anything about baseball.

Amazon describes it as: Taut, exciting, realistic dramedy about the lives of sports journalists. It's a show about a show about sports, that isn't about sports at all.  ;D

here's my contribution:

HOOSIERS--don't you just love(or hate) skimpy short shorts?!?
REMEMBER THE TITANS--adversity, race and other social issues, tough coach beloved by players in the end.
RUDY--who doesnt love underdogs?  makes you believe anything is possible
FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME--a good mix of romance and baseball, good for watching with a date who also loves sports
TIN CUP--a good look on how stubborn we are when we want to hit it and rip it!!
THE NATURAL--robert redford rounding out the bases, with lights and sparks in the backgorund...what a cinematic baseball experience
MAJOR LEAGUE--a great popcorn baseball movie

JERRY MAGUIRE--ok, watched this film a few times...like 15something?  hehe..  "show me the mohney!!"  DON'T EVER STOP F*****G ME SCENE!! the titilating love scene at the doorway...and oh yes...the YOU COMPLETE ME SPEECH.  made me a cameron crowe fan.

peace bros!! ;D ;D

can glory road be considered here as a great sports movie?

i haven't seen the film and i plan to test it  by buying a p-*** muna bago ako bumili ng mahal.

has anyone seen it? maganda ba? worth it ba ang pera mo?
