i'm planning to buy one eh yung ok ang quality pero di gaano mabigat sa bulsa..help naman mga sir..paki indicate ng brand and model..tnx!
i heard na yung LiteOn dvd burners eh namimili ng media..so far yung BenQ 1640 ang ok sa mga nababasa ko dito..any suggestions po? or pwde na yung BenQ?
-
I used to ask the same question when I was canvassing a DVD-writer. I enede-up with BenQ DW1640, which I bought at Villman West Ave. for 2.8K (if I remember it right). I was looking for a no-frills and cheap DVD burner and I'm glad to say that the DW1640 was just right for me.
All burns I did with it are OK naman and the most "expensive" media I've used on it was a Ridata DVD-R. I used generic (cheap!) DVD-Rs to back-up files and to make home video DVDs. Everything went well naman. As far as movie playback, it was smooth as silk. I just wished they used a different LED color to show if the drive is burning or reading.
-
im using a lite on DVD RW burner for now. so far wala pa namang problema.before im using a TDK cd burner. im amaze sa quality ng burn niya. dough i havent try thier new dvd burner, i think ok siya. TDK DVD burner is my first choice, but mahirap kumuha dito sa pinas ng stock kaya i ended up liteon. just me. ;)
-
i think either way you go... you won't be dissatisfied.
lite on is good because it is so inexpensive compared to other brands. the quality is at par with other burners of it's class, in my opinion.
benq is also a wise choice because of the "adaptive technology" it uses in burning in different brands of media. they are also relatively inexpensive.
sony is good as well, but they are just "rebadged" liteons and benqs (depending on the model). they do however present a complete package in terms of software and are... well, just so darn "pretty". LOL.
the LG writers are the way to go if writing to DVD-RAM is important to you. for about the same price (if not cheaper than most), you can get a super-multidrive that burns on practically all kinds of media out there. (including dvd-ram)
TDK, NEC, Pioneer, etc. etc. are also established brands... tho not as readily available for purchase in regular stores. you can however buy them from direct importers but the warranty is limited (about 3 months usually).
my only tip is ... if you want to make your burner last, don't use cheap or unreliable media. we have an excellent thread here that talks about that. also, be mindful not to "overuse" your burner. burning stuff 48hours straight is not healthy for your drive. and regularly check the manufacturer's website for updates and bios upgrades.
just make sure you get a drive that burns on at least 4 of the popular media out there: DVD-R. DVD+R, DVD-R Dual Layer and DVD+R Dual layer. older models might be cheaper but only burns to 3 of the four mentioned. good luck. ;D
i use a lite-on BTW. ;)
-
pioneer. it's what i use and install on every system i make for my friends et al. ...never failed me.
shalom :)
-
tnx mga sir! as of now my choice is the BenQ DW1640..pero medyo nalilito pa rin..suggestions and comments are still welcome! tnx!

why not list the features you want or can't live without? ... that's usually a good starting point. ;)
-
i think you should check for the lite-on
better reviews
they ask what is better blank to be used.
i used lite-on too
-
mga sir do u hav any specific model and reviews for the lite on? i checked the market and halos same lang ang benq and lite on ng presyo eh..upon reading the reviews of the benq dw1640 parang ok kasi yung feature nya na ichecheked nung burner ang media mo den automatic na syang mag aadjust ng burning speed depending on the reliability and capability of the media used...pwede rin kaya tung feature na to sa lite on? tnx!

i think lite-on has a similar feature called SMART-BURN.
ultimately... it comes down to what brand you trust. i swear by lite-on's reliability because i have used their dvd-rom and cd-rw drives for years.
i do, however, have to say that i was impressed with the innovations that benq introduced especialy with it's "spindle" which basically ensures that it burns at 90degrees everytime.
but i was looking for s "lightscribe enabled" drive... a feature not many are looking for. the local benq distributors were not keen in bringing in the newer models that came with this feature, so i went with lite-on by default. no regrets tho. i love my new writer. i even upgraded it's firmware just moments ago. ;D
-
LITE-ON the best of the best...
-
naghahanap rin ako nung merong light scribe kaya lang wala ka kasi msyadong makita dito eh..how do u upgrade the firmware?
-
mga sir eto pala yung feature nung benq.. "SOLID BURN"
qoute from benq website
Basically it all sums together: If SolidBurn is enabled it will write a small area in the Power Calibration area at maximum speed, then measure the error level, if the error level is ok it will start writing the disc, if not it will write a new area at lower speed, measure the error level, and start to write if the error level is ok, if not it will continue to repeat this process until the measured error level is ok or that the lowest speed (2x/2.4x) is reached and write the disc at that speed.
-
what do u think is the difference between lite on's SMART BURN and benq's SOLID BURN?
-
what do u think is the difference between lite on's SMART BURN and benq's SOLID BURN?
lite-on's definition of smart-burn:
"Innovated SMART-BURN technology to automatically check media quality and set limit to burning speed to ensure successful writing sessions & data retainability"
they are really not the same... albeit similar, they supposedly have different algorhithms. in a nutshell, smart-burn just detects which are the optimal speeds you can burn of a prticular media. also, smart-burn has 2 other components: hypertuning (which is the real counterpart of solidburn) and overburning (which allows you to burn at a higher than rated write speed... ).
naghahanap rin ako nung merong light scribe kaya lang wala ka kasi msyadong makita dito eh..how do u upgrade the firmware?
not sure about benq. but every model in the lite-on website has a download section where you can download a runnable *.exe file that will upgrade your drive's firmware. every upgrade requires a reset of the PC tho.
lightscribe can be found but you might have to order it special from your suki pc store. expect to pay at least a thousand bucks more for that feature. problem is... the media to make lightscribe discs is very rare right now. and if you find them... very expensive. about 60-80pesos per disc.

So with this being said, which of the two brands has the better dvd burner?

So with this being said, which of the two brands has the better dvd burner?
better in what way? this is all really relative. the innovations benq is introducting like the improved disc spindle and solid burn are all really quite impressive. but being so new, do these new changes affect the recorder in some way, will it lengthen or maybe even, shorten, the recorder's life? we really don't know the answer to that yet.
performance wise... i've seen the benq 1640 give better numbers in dvd burning: faster burn times (but only in the seconds.), less errors, etc. etc. but in my opinion, the differences are so small they are negligible for a home user.
on the other hand, the lite-on has a reputation for having an RPC2 code that's easy to crack (kprobe is all you need to free it) ... plus most of its models outperform the 1640 when it comes to burning on regular CDs. again, the difference is so minute. it's negligible. (quick note: while all lite-ons have smartburn... not all of them have hypertuning or overburning. so check before you decide.)
i will however caution you against getting newer models (beyond 1640) from benq. i have read in some forums that they have switched to panasonic chips. (i heard that's why the 1655 is not turning up quite as impressive results as it's older 1640 cousin) while lite-ons continue to use the "old-reliable" mediatek.
you will never find an ALL-IN-ONE dvd recorder. (at least not yet) there will always be one thing in which another drive is better at.
so in truth, its an even playing field out there (provided you are not looking into getting cheap generic ones). like i already said in earlier post... assess your need and list the features you want. after which, you should check which drives are available for you and fit your budget then make a decision you are comfortable with. ;D
while i am lite-on user, i cannot properly reply to the allegations of "mapili siya sa media"... that's because, for the sake of compatibility and less coasters, i NEVER buy recordable dvds priced less than 10-15 pesos. i have coasters, i'll admit, but it is more because i had some "software" problem (incompatible IDE drivers with nero, power outage, etc, etc) and not because of the drive per se.
just a thought... exactly what lite-on model are you considering? maybe if we knew, we can better assess your dilemma.
-
I Have a NEC and I'm really satisfied with its performance.
-
So with this being said, which of the two brands has the better dvd burner?
My advise is to get Both Liteon and BenQ for the simple reason, that most of my friends here and at the other site who are "heavy users" have both brands, hence, have the best of both........ :-*.......besides....it's a lot cheaper than getting a sony or NEC; BenQ 1640 goes for 2,889.00 and at Villman at that ;D (cheaper in others...check out the post of Battousai) whereas the Liteon goes for only 3.5K max...do the math...it's will come off cheaper than having the NEC or the mid priced Sony. ;)
-
bro mas mura sa PC Corner sa Mega mall ang Lite-on DVD burner nila dun nasa 2,8k lang...

actually, competitively priced na rin ang sony. i think nasa sub 3k na rin ang price niya for the boxed DRU-820a (2.8k) ... which is basically a rebadged benq 1670. :P
(http://www.letsgodigital.org/images/artikelen/55/sony_dru820a_dvd_writer.jpg)
maganda lang sa sony is the bundled software and the "funky white faceplate"... sobrang drab yung black. LOL.
while you can get the lite-on sohw-1693s for 2.2k and the sohw-160p6 for 2.55k. (i think the only difference is the 160p6 can burn on DVD+R DL at 8x)
-
Iyun' ang astig. ;D :o

don't worry. ako rin. i bought mine only 2 months ago and the price has already dropped by at least one hundred pesos. LOL.
"asteeeeeg" naman nung kilala mo. (kilala ko rin ba yun? lol.) i don't have two burners tho. just an old dvd-rom and one lite-on burner. :-\ oh well, still happy pa rin naman. ;D
my experience is that dedicated "readers" like a dvd-rom and cd-rom are faster rippers. the norm is mabagal mag-rip ang mga burners. ;)
-
i have a lite on combo drive..and mga 3 yrs old na ata and ok pa rin ang takbo..hehe
so guys if i am going to choose a lite on dvd burner, what model ba ang astig? tnx!
-
Im using this LG GSA-4166B. It was great esp the lightscribe capability.
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/262/1
-
mine is a little older... but i just bought a little over a 2 months ago. lite-on SHW-16H5S. (no DVD-RAM burning capability):
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/245/1
and yes, i like the lightscribe feature as well... just wish i could find more media tho. :-[
brings in slightly lower numbers than most new drives but great for doing "scans", which some new drives don't do well.
-
sir spaceman spiff,
how much bili nyo sa Lite-On SHW-16H5S? may ma irecomend ba kayo na model na with the complete feature of Lite-On SHW-16H5S with dvd-ram burning capability? tnx!

there is... it should be available by now. it is the 165H6S (i was going to wait for this but i decided to forgo when i learned i would probably NEVER use this feature because the media is barely available here and VERY expensive) ... if you can live without the lightscribe but not the DVD-RAM compatibility, check out the SHM-16P6S. (this is the model with 3 faceplates and goes for 3,450pesos)
i saw the 16H5S in PC Buyer's Guide going for 3,950pesos (dealer price ata.) just last night. i bought it for a little over 4k, 2 months ago. not sure about the price for the newer model that can burn on DVD-RAM. you can check out the other half-height lite-on models here: http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=26&Itemid=67
once you find the model you like, you can call their distributor or check their website for availability and the location of the nearest retailer in your area:

ok..tnx sir..my choice as of now is the lite on shm-165h6s..magkano na kaya ito ngayon? i've checked the site yung netessentials pero wala dun yun model na hinahanap ko eh!

sa acenet sa shoppesville plus greenhills meron ganyang lite-on na model at meron din silang lightscribe media
-
anong astig na dvd burner?
PIONEER! I've had almost all popular brands of dvd writers but nothing compares with Pioneer. I've tried burning on the cheapest and most generic DVDrs and CDRs just to test it's capability. All was burned and read well on generic standalone players. It's really a kick ass burner.
-
Hanep sa pagbagsak ng presyo ngayon. Nakita ko sa Villman na PhP2,488 na lang pala yung BenQ DW1640. :o

excellent choice... i wonder how much it goes for naman. (just make sure the price of having DVD-RAM capability is worth the extra bucks you're gonna spend. ;) ... personally, i don't think it is. i'd rather spend it on more lightscribe media... but hey, that's just me. LOL)

-
Hi, I hope someone can help.
Are external DVD Burners reliable ? Can anyone recommend which External DVD Burners are OK (speed, multi-format, etc) , and where available ?
Thank you

Yes. Try to look for Imation brand. Dami dito Singapore.

yup... i think it's wise not to "jump the gun" when it comes to new technology. ;)
anyone remember when cd burners went for as high as 24k-27k? my first writer... a SCSI yamaha cd-recorder, not re-writer, whose max burning speed was 4x ... was 19k!! bargain na yun noon. now you can buy a decent re-writer for less than 10% that price. :-[
-
Pinaka astig? Plextor seympre. Pero dito sa pinas, Lite-On pa rin. price-performance ratio walang tatalo sa Lite-On for me.
Although minsan pag diredirecho burning mo, mga tipong 200 cds/dvds na burning na sunod sunod, bumibigay din.
-
sir spaceman,
so wat do you suggest? the Lite-On SHW-16H5S or Lite-On SHM-165H6S? considering na darating nanaman yung mga makabagong media..nakakalito eh..ok rin ba yung LG GSA-H10N (dvd-ram burning capable din wla lang light scribe)..tnx!
-

heh heh... if i had a choice and i could spare the cash. go for the 165H6S. not because it has DVD-RAM capability, but more because it supports hypertuning and overburning. (the 16H5S does not.) and it also has some performance tweaks that makes it read and burn a little faster.
unfortunately, budget was a HUGE consideration for me back when i was shopping for a recorder... so the 16H5S was the answer to my prayers. ang habol ko talaga noon was the lightscribe feature. i could live without the DVD-RAM (300pesos per media?? uh, pass!). and i can definitely be happy with a drive that burns a few seconds slower than the other models i was considering (benq and sony).
you're lucky you have a choice na. 2 months ago, wala kang makikita pa na 165H6S sa market. ;)
don't be too concerned with the new media's yet (HDD and Blu-Ray)... i forsee that these products won't saturate the market for at least another year or two. by then, with regular use, your new dvd recorder should have worked its worth back and more. ;)

200 consecutive burns? gee! i think abuse like that would break any recorder, regardless of brand. :o

very nice. mad dog drives are rebadged NECs, which almost guarantees it'll be at least decent. ;D
unless i'm mistaken, that is a mad dog MD-16X3DVD9-8xe, which is basically a rebadged NEC 4550A

no problem. ;) ... after reading the reviews, i guess the only minor concern i would have for this NEC model is the lack of an app for bitsetting (i.e. burning DVD+R in DVD-R bitsetting)... but hopefully mad dog's custom software might've addressed this issue. congrats on the new drive. ;D

try checking with stores like rising sun, pc express and pc bodega. they might be able to help you. very "consumer friendly" prices too. ;)

The VRD-VC20 is Sony’s 2nd generation stand-alone DVD recorder. it has a DV (1394) digital video input and dual layer writing capability to the previous generation VRD-VC10. The unit is directed at the consumer who has a library of analog video recordings and would like to convert them directly to a DVD – without connecting to a PC. Unlike a combination VCR / DVD recorder, the unit contains no tape drive and is therefore very compact. When not performing as a stand-alone DVD recorder, the VRD-VC20 connects to a PC for general DVD recorder duty."
More reviews to follow as i explore this new toy of mine. ;D ;D

nice "toy" there. ganda-ganda. ... very pretty indeed. sony makes some of the "prettiest" drives around. (ganda nung blue screen sa fascia.) ;)
BTW, the "guts" of this drive is lite-on and the chipset is mediatek. not bad. ;)
on paper, the best part of this drive is the 8MB buffer... that will mean fewer buffer errors and less coaster. ;D the only minor cons i can think of is the lack of DVD-RAM and DVD-R DL support. (and maybe the price... ~$250 pa rin ba aldrin?) :(

i'm really curious how well this performs sa mga analog dubbing via the RCA connectors in the back... ;D

that's not a bad price (parang ang mura nga eh.)... have you inquired about how long the "order" will take?
not sure about PC hub technologies... but being that it's a "gilmore store"... it might be legit and reputable. ;D

mga bossing,
ano difference ng Lite On SHM-165h6S and LG H20L . Both have the lightscribe technology and I know may DVD Ram support yung LiteOn. But other than the DVD Ram advantage ng 165h6S, ano pa kaya difference nila. Because according to bro emo_punk P3.5K yung LiteOn while yung LG is 2.5K lang sa PC Hub. OK na kaya yung LG.
Thanks.

^^
feature wise, it seems they are identical...
but be warned, i heard that the H20L is a non-bulk version of the GSA-4166B (they even "look" the same... H20L on top, 4166B below) which uses a panasonic chipset. these chipset are "apparently" (based of what i've read) notorious for having "writing quality troubles"... on paper tho, this seems like a good drive. ;D
the lite-on, however, runswith a mediatek chipset... which is probably more expensive.

i must admit, i am really surprised at how HUGE the difference in price is. :o

sir spaceman, how about an old model benq16 dw1620 for Php1600? compared to 1640?
-
^^ ronjet, they seem to be the same (same chipset too: phillips nexperia) with the 1640 only applying a few alterations to improve performance and writing quality ... the most obvious of which is the size (the 1640 is shorter) and the patented "airflow" design that is supposed to keep the drive cooler during operation. see the pic below of the 1640's top side ... it has "channels" as opposed to the 1620, which is flat.

Bros Space, is the high jitter level really an issue to look into when choosing the writer? Is there a way to avoid it,? I am about to get the LG-GSA H10N (is this the one with a jitter prblem?) until i read the review. tnks for any info.. ::)

i think jitter is always an issue when it comes to optical discs. syempre, the less jitter, the better the recording (that's why most audiophiles prefer to burn at slower speeds... less jitter kasi) ... it would probably be easier if you check if the drive you are getting has appropriate "jitter compensation" methods in place (ex. solidburn, smartburn, etc. etc.). maybe read on how they achieve this and make an informed choice on which one you would trust. ;)
benq at the moment is quite popular with the "solidburn" system that they are implementing on their drives. people seem to like it and techies seem to be impressed with it. ;D
-
BenQ 1640 goes for 2,889.00 and at Villman at that ;D (cheaper in others...check out the post of Battousai) whereas the Liteon goes for only 3.5K max...do the math...it's will come off cheaper than having the NEC or the mid priced Sony. ;)
wow, ba't ang mahal ng DW-1640 dyan sa Manila? Here in Cebu, BenQ's 1640 drives go for around P2,250 lang.
-
Actually 1.8K na lang dito according to Bro Alfie's friend.
-

bro, what store did you get the BenQ 1640 for P2,250 in Cebu? ;)
-
ang magandang burner is LG H20L kasi lightscribe na sya at lg tech pa.very good combination. murang mura pa.lightscribe cd's are also super mura na at 25 pesos courtesy of cdrking.widely available na.
benq's are also good.never go for a lite-on,they're only good for dvdrom/cdrom drives but not for burners.
-
never go for a lite-on,they're only good for dvdrom/cdrom drives but not for burners.
i beg to differ with that last comment... i have used both lite-on cd-writers and dvd-writers (as well as cd-roms and dvd-roms)... both write reliably on specified media. the only times it would make coasters is when there's software error. ;)
lightscribe media readily available... the CDs may be... but the dvds are not... still quite scarce (and expensive...) :-\
i have heard that benq scores poorly in lightscribe (especially the 1655). people report that it "burns" too light ... i'm sure benq will have a firmware fix for this soon enough.
-
i did not say that lightscribe dvd's are widely available, because it is not,but it will eventually come, law of demand and supply,a lot have already bought lightscribe burners.i only said that cdr's are and are cheap too, kasi posts above pegged it at 60pesos or higher daw.
as for the lite-on,well,as you've said,it was your experience.who can argue with that.i just hope it was only a software error.who can tell.
anyway,i'm sticking on my opinion, liteon is good only for reading(rom drives) not with burning.and it is expensive.not worth every cent when you can have one for less and is better in quality.
disclaimer:peace if this post will ever get on your nerves. :)

why would it get on my nerves? this is a discussion, after all. ;D ... i was just a little surprised at your obvious bias against lite-on and sweeping generalizations about the quality of its products. you say others are "better in quality", exactly where were you basing this on? from what i know, a lot of branded dvd-writers are actually lite-on drives under the hood. (e.g. the sony drive aldrinpsx posted. i highly doubt a big name like sony stake their reputation on an "inferior" product... ;))
i have nothing against LG, or it's products (which i'm sure perform quite well) ... but i am always wary when a product is priced well-below it's competitors. i still believe in that old saying "you get what you pay for". :-[ (BTW, i am very surprised at the HUGE difference in price... based on internet market prices, they shouldn't be that far apart.)
as for the lighscribe CDs... they are not as readily availabe as you might think either. i have no less than 5 CD-R King stores in my immediate vicinity... and all of them are "out of stock" with the HP lightscribe CD-Rs. (good thing i purchased more than i needed the last time it was available.) ;D i think the stores are still wary about stocking up on these because they are not fast-moving items. :-\
-
thanks sir spaceman, i think i just settle for the benq 1640 if the price is just 200 pesos over the 1620(1600php). San kaya yung store na nakita ni sir alfie na 1,800 para sa 1640? :)
for lightscride dvdrw naman? ano ok ang benchmark?
-

cool... i think the store he mentioned is in the "gilmore area"... konting ikot-ikot lang dun, i'm sure you'll find it. ;)
i believe all lightscribe drives burn lightscribe designs at 1x... so check samples on the net of the ones you are considering. also check the "tracking" ability of the drive. not many people know this but you can actually burn additional stuff on a lightscribe disc even after burning the inital design. it does this by using the "bar code" located at the inner ring of the label side. i've heard that some drives do this better than others... so that could be a factor to consider. i can't speak for the others by my lite-on does this very well. i successfully burned additional elements onto a design i made months ago. ;)
-
I am wondering with my LG GSA H10N it reads all my burned video DVDs smoothly without errors in complete contrast with how my Toshiba SDR5372V reads these. is this a good sign or bad sign? tnx ::)
-
I am wondering with my LG GSA H10N it reads all my burned video DVDs smoothly without errors in complete contrast with how my Toshiba SDR5372V reads these. is this a good sign or bad sign? tnx ::)
i wouldn't read too much into it. your LG is new... so it's not surprising that it reads more than what your old drive can. it wouldn't be fair to compare 2 drives bought at different times. i'm sure if you bought a new toshiba, it would also read better than your old one. :)
the lenses of these drives degrade over time. that's why a disc your drive might have had no problem reading when it was new might be "unreadable" to the same drive a few years down the road. :-\
most drives have an "expected life span"... i think 20,000 hours is the norm. however, this not an iron-clad statistic. your drives longevity will still naturally depend on how well you take care of it (e.g. the quality of discs you feed it and how often you use it.) ;)
-
Bro Spaceman tnx! at least it seems that im correct in getting a new drive. But will a new firmware resolve the issue about reading and writing ability of the drive? i notice kasi most of the firmwares only increases the speed which i dont really need because i burn at slower rates to ensure quality.
-
it could. because aside from adding speed (and in your toshiba's case... ability to write on dual-layer media). most firmware upgrades add more "media compatibility" especially in the recording side. not so much on the "reading" tho. :-\
i guess one sign that a recorder is nearing the end of it's "life" is if it has trouble reading the discs it burns. :-\
just curious... how long have you had your toshiba? and would you consider yourself as a "heavy user"?
-
I got that toshiba EO 2004. I do some video conversions but not so often. maybe i am still within the "MODERATE USER" level.
Bro Space, are there tweaks u know that can be done to drivers to improve its operation? thanks again bro for the usual help. ;)
-
2 years... not bad. i'm sure it's already showing some signs of age na rin. (and from your posts, it seems like ganun na nga.)
tweaks? unfortunately, there's really not much you can do to an optical drive to "tweak" it ... unless you fool around siguro with the firmware to unlock RPC2, improve the read speed a little or maybe even allow overburning and mt. ranier... but i wouldn't recommend that. baka masira lang drive mo with these "hacked firmware". you can probably bring it to a technician you trust to help "fine tune" the lens so that it won't be mapili... but even then, once you fool around with the inside... it all seems to go downhill from there.
my best recommendation would be to get the drive professionally cleaned. that might help a little... that means opening the drive and cleaning out all the dust and particles inside... you'd be surprised at all the junk that gets into that little slot. LOL.
-
thanks sir spaceman for all that very informative post you had. :)
about the lightscribe "tracking ability" , im just basing my purchase on these thread and from benchmark of you(user) of this/that item. nalilito talaga ako intindihin yung mga nakasulat dun(sa mga drive's specs)hehe.. so better pala na dalawa or may isang DVD drive lang para yun ang malaspag pagmanonood ka lang :)
-
;D ;D
yup... that's my configuration as well. readers are also faster rippers than recorders... so mas mabilis ang "digital audio extraction" sa reader than with a recorder. with DVDs naman it's hardly noticable. ;)
-
NICE to hear that sir spaceman! :) buti nalang mura lang DVD drive. :)
thanks sir ulit!
-
got the benq 1640 here in cebu for P2.2 k and have already burned/ back up more than ten orig. dvds frequently viewed by the kids..so far wala pang kawala :D at ang bilis!! ;D ;)

up! any comments and suggestions kung ano ang astig na dvd burner!
-
gud aftertoon to all, i'm new here and i'm looking for any reviews regarding LG DVD-RAM? thanx...
-
i recently bought the liteon shm-165h6s super all write with lightscribe dvd burner..ask ko lang sana kung anong magandang lightscribe direct disc labeling software..tnx!
-
^^
for me... hands down, it is surething cd labeller... madali pa gamitin. ;)
-
I checked dun sa Gaisano store sa Gilmore. Could not find the BENQ 1640 - wala na atang stock. I badly need a DVD-Writer (sayang kasi kung ang sa Thinkpad T60 ko ang gamit ko) so I settled for a Lite-on from PC Corner.
-
lite-on isn't a bad 2nd choice... it was mine. and i'm pretty happy with it.
BTW, you really should use that burner in your t60 a few times... sayang naman if it breaks without extensive use, di ba? just remember not to overuse it ... ;)
-
I use lite-on... ok ang performance... but mukhang panalo ang benq ah.
-
^ feature-wise... benq seems to be in the forefront at moment. but i still wonder about their longevity and reliabilty after a while. the attitude of their local distributor here towards their consumers also leave a LOT to be desired. :-[
-
ok kaya tong SAMSUNG SH-S162 may lightscribe na sya. meron sa shaw P1900 lang, 3 months warranty.
-
^ sounds okay to me... the lightscribe model is SH-162L... there is a non-lighscribe model as well (SH-162A)... toshiba-samsung manufacturer with mediatek chipset... supposedly a super all-write model... seems like a pretty good deal to me.
i'm a little concerned about the warranty tho... only 3 years months? best guess is this did not come from a local distributor. ???
can you share exactly which store is selling it? and what color fascia is available? thanks.
-
actually bro 3 MONTHS warranty lang. i think it is an OEM version. the store is Refurbdepot who sells refurbished PCs, they're located at beacon plaza shaw blvd, it is the building near Red Ribbon.
so do you think the 3 month warranty is sufficient enough for the cheap pricetag.
here's the link at Tipidpc from one of the store staff or maybe the owner. http://tipidpc.com/viewitem.php?iid=537670
thanks bro!

LOL... freudian slip... i meant months but typed "years" instead. heh heh. my bad. ;)
ohhh... i was right. they probably shipped these in themselves. that would explain it. the warranty is probably an outright replacement in case it is defective. sounds like a a pretty good deal.
if you feel comfortable enough with the conditions, this is definitely worth giving a try. ;D ;D
-
lolz!
I also saw the LG H20L (with Lightscribe also) at PC Hub going for only P2,200 (retail) with one year warranty.
I think this is a better deal. But which is a more reliable burner in terms of performance and longetivity.
Thanks!
-

i think you won't lose either way you go... the advantage of buying the LG is the fact that it's not an OEM unit. so it will come boxed and budled with software you will need like nero. LG also supports bitsetting... this means you can configure your +R media to be set to -R ... not really that much an issue for new players but if you own any old dvd players, this will prove useful.
the big advantage of getting the samsung OEM is the chipset... it uses mediatek. this is the same chipset maker that is used by of the more popular (and sometimes more expensive) writers like sony, lite-on, iomagic, HP, Aopen and Hi-Val. and in players like pioneer, phillips and oppo. LG, on the other hand, uses masush!ta chipsets... still a good brand tho not quite as prolific.
then there's the warranty you need to consider as well... if i were noob, i'd defintely want to have a year's warranty behind me. ;)
-
thanks bro! i'll probably get the LG! the warranty is very important to me!
-
bro, the H20 has a lightscribe while the H10N can write on DVD-RAM. I got the latter, mas mahalaga sa akin yung ability to write on DVD-RAM rather than the lightscribe . but this is just me though. ;D
-
^ the H20L can also write to DVD-RAM. the H10 however uses a different chipset... renesas. since then, they have moved to matsush!ta chipsets. like in the H20L. ;D
i just read now that this drive sometimes has problems detecting a few lightscribe media tho. (specifically TDK lighscribe discs. it had no problems burning data on to them.) :-\
-
-
nkabili ako nung dvd burner na lite on shm 165h6s with lightscribe feature..ok to para sa akin..tsaka lite on is a brand na tested na talaga..kasi i also have a lite on combo..three years na sa akin pero still kicking pa rin..

nice article, edboy ... "best buy" nila ang lite on... madali pang i-region free ang RPC2 niya. LOL.
"wats a lightscribe? ::)" serious ba yan tanong na yan? LOL... anyhoo, more on lighscribe... http://www.lightscribe.com
BTW, if you have doubts about the lightscribe... trust me, they "never" look as good as the ones on the site... LOL... but it's close. (this was the last lightscribe design i made... simple lang. but was burned twice... at 40 mins each.)

thanks Spiffy! :) dunno anything regarding the Lightscribe talaga :D kasi puro sticker pa kami sa ofis e :( Imation is included on the list for Lightscribe layered media..is it expensive? meron kaya sa cdr king? ::)
-
umm tanong ko lang po... i have a lite-on burner. is there a way i can decode it to become a region-free player? temporary lang kasi yun naging region-free eh; ngayon, it can't play non R3 dvds.
thanks.

magdownload ka na lang ng DVD43 (DVD for free) para ma-read nya kahit anong region ng disc mo.
-

haven't seen any other lightscribe media other than HP and mistubishi yet... would love to try others tho. plus mostly DVD+R lang meron... walang DVD-R pa akong nakikita. CDR king sells lightscribe CD-Rs... no signs of the dvd media yet. rising sun has dvds naman.
they're pretty expensive compared sa mga "regular ones"... usually around the 60-80 peso price sila, depending on the brand. ;D
BTW, i still use stickers on most of my regular discs... the only one i haven't tried is yung "printable media"... heh heh. ;D
-

you have 2 choices... download k-probe and disable RPC2... but then you would still need dvd-genie or some other "software" to remove region limitations in your OS.
OR
get one that handles both RPC2 AND OS limits at the same time in the "software level"... like dvd region free, anydvd or dvd43. ;D
hope that helps. ;D ;D

Magkano na ang LG H10?
Thanks!

k-probe has the exact same utility built-in. this only takes care of RPC2 tho... your windows OS still has the 5 change limit. ;)

Only Gaisano and Vilman carries the BenQ brand, however, due to the very low and affordable price of Gaisano, it's now out of stock.

saw someone buy it at PC Express... even though H-20A yung listed sa price list, that's actually the LG H-20L ... ;)
-
puro kasi H20L yung nakikita ko eh, wala ako makita na H10L...
mas maganda ang specs kasi ng H10L kesa H20L...
H20L:
DVD-RAM=5x
DVD+R DL=8x
DVD-R DL=4x
H10L:
DVD-RAM=12x
DVD+R DL=10x
DVD-R DL=6x
saan kaya meron nito?
-
it also uses the renesas chip... unlike the 20L which uses panasonic.
some users say the renesas chip is better... but i haven't used a writer that has that. :-\
-
di na ako makahanap ng H10L kaya H20L na lang binili ko... wala naman ako mahanapan ng dvd-ram disc... hehehe...
so far ok naman sya...

^^ both the H20L and the H10L can burn on dvd-ram... the difference is in the burning speeds. H10L is generally faster. ;)

yes i know, as stated in my previous post just above yours... i also included their speed difference... ;D ;D ;D
my post "wala naman ako mahanapan na dvd-ram" doesn't have anything to do with what model i bought... i just stated that as a fact... i cant find any dvd-ram disc... always out of stock...
-
What are you comments on the LG GSA-H22L? I bought one today, but have not used it yet
-
ako rin bumili kahapon ng lg h22l. dvd rw ram. first sa video mas maganda sya. k naman sa burning .
light scribe di ko pa nasubukan kasi wala akong makitang disc for lightscribe. san ba meron?

LG GSA-H22L - whats the current price and hows the compatibilty with generic cdr and dvdrs.
thanks
-
I bought my LG H22 for 2.2k. Seems to be the best alternative to Liteon in terms of features and value.
-
my H22L sucks, ginawa ko nag reformat na ko ng PC then tinest ko ulet, there was little improvement but sa last part ng movie eh nagkakaroon ng problema... tested it using both generic and branded discs at 4x, antivirus is off. Pagless than 3 gig ang buburn ko, ok naman... sana maglabas na ang LG ng upgrade sa firmware, 1.00 pa rin yung akin eh, Sept 06 ang Mfg date.
-
lg h22l, ngayon never fail sa mga naburn ko. kasi mula ng mabili ko yun nag ugrade ako agad ng firmware. kaya kahit sa mga generic or branded na cdr or dvd+ - r guaranteed. hindi nasasayang yung mga back up files ko.

how did you upgrade your firmware? wala pang available update sa site nila...
-
yung package installer nanakuha ko may upgrade software na kaya very good talaga.sa installer mismo
-
Sept 2006 ang date of production ng akin... walang kasamang upgrade software...
-
browse the CD that came with your burner... look for a folder that as the word "update" in it. run the "setup" program in that folder.
be advised that the LG-ODD update program will run everytime you open windows. :)
-
Nakainstall na yung LG-ODD updater, nasa system tray ko nga sya. Everytime narurun ko sya, wala naman update na available. I'll post some screenshots tom...
-
there are conflicting reports 'net-wide on what exactly is the latest firmware for the H22L... some say there's a v.1.01... but all who mention it have it pre-installed in drives manufactured on October 2006. the later-made ones came with v.1.00 naman. very strange.
if there is a v1.01, LG isn't offering it yet. at least, not for download. baka may nag-leak na mga "engineering models"?... kaya may v.1.01 na lumabas.
the H22N tho... already has a v.1.01 available.
hope that helps... ;)

ah oki, ganun pala...

I just recently replaced my 1-year old LG GSA-H20L with LITEON LH-20A1H 20X SUPER ALLWRITE DVD WRITER w/ LIGHTSCRIBE and I'm very satisfied with it's performance... simply splendid! ;D

-

I guess, DRU 835A is an All write format too.

Sir, maybe it has something to do with the disc media, or maybe the speed of burning.
What DVD-/+R did you use and at what speed did you burn the movie?
-
I used an HP DVD-R, max speed. it was tested by a friend using a generic player. pixellations & slight skipping daw. what settings do you guys recommend on my next burn?

I always burn one speed lower than the maximum burn speed of the disc. And I always make it a point to verify disc (in Nero and DVDDecrypter).
For PS2 back-ups, I always burn at a fixed speed of 4X regardless of the disc's max burn speed using Alcohol 120%.
Pixellations also happens to my burns, when played using my Orange generic DVD player. Most of the times, it's the player that's at fault. When I switch to my Nextbase player, no pixellations whatsoever.
Sir, try the disc again using another player.
-
will try that, thanks for the tip

I'm using an LG GSA-H10N. I think this is an older model since I've had this model for more almost three years now. This baby will burn on anything!
Btw, I burn a lot of DVDs and LG DVD-writers have always lived up to expectations. My first one conked out... on its 11th month! Lucky for me, the warranty is for one year. So I went back to Rising Sun and returned the drive. After a few days, they replaced it with a brand new LG DVD-writer. And that one went on to live for over a year, I think. I didn't count anymore since it's past warranty already. And it also died eventually. This is my third LG DVD-writer. Money well-spent, if you ask me. I don't expect these drives to live forever.
-
Hi to all
hope you guys can give me insights on quality of "Asus DVD burner".....
thanks.....

I agree with this one, ganito rin ang gamit ko until now :)
VHS at Betamax tapes lang hindi kayang i-burn, hehehe ;D ;D ;D

taas kamay ako! LG GSAh10-a! indeed! sobrang sulit at hindi pa maselan sa kahit anung dvd media!
-
Korek! Natatawa na nga lang ako sa mga bumibili sa CD-R King ng DVDs. Tagal nilang pumili, dami pang tanong kasi worried sila na baka hindi magwork sa DVD writer nila. Eh ako, kinukuha ko lang, whichever is the cheapest and aesthetically pleasing, confident that whichever I purchase will work on my LG GSA-H10N.
