I need a list of the most credible Pinoy critics...so far here's my list -
1. Lito Zulueta
2. Constantino Tejero
3. Gino Dormiendo
4. Noel Vera
5. Conrado de quiros
6. Joel David
7. Joan Maglipon
8. Bien Lumbrera
who else...pls reply...we are updating an invite list for a small preview of a Filipino film this June
-
Jo-Ann Maglipon will get mad if you spell her name like you did. And I never knew Conrado de Quiros reviewed movies.
-
Count Butch Francisco & Jessica Zafra also.
-
also Emmanuel Reyes...
-
Is that list in descending order of quality? ;D
Second Manny Reyes. Iconoclastic views, in that he prefers Hollywood musical extravaganzas to neorealist dramas. I like that.
Add Alexis Tioseco. He's more in tune with recent world cinema than almost any of the critics you mention (a crucial requirement, to put our cinema in proper perspective), and particularly knowledgeable about Lav Diaz.
-
Mario Hernando.. He still does movie reviews, right?
How about Nestor Cuartero?
-
1. Lito Zulueta

I suppose Nestor Torre is out also...
Manny Reyes was a one-time critic and filmmaker. He wrote/directed Dreaming Filipinos and Suwapings.

Is this for a press screening next month? Don't you find Dennis Ladaw, Vives Anunciacion and Edsel Lorete credible enough?
-
Dennis, I forgot about. I hope he forgives me.
Edsel--is he short, with glasses and a moustache? Was wondering what he's doing, if that's him.
-

-
Vives Anunciacion works for PDI.
-
Taray mo, Ed. What is your basis (for credibility)? Maybe you know something about the print media that we don't know yet.
-
Where is Jo Ann Maglipon writing?
INQUIRER..and YES mag
-
I'm not sure if that's the same Edsel. Vives I've never chanced upon in the Inquirer either.
-
I once read an item from this block asking for a list of film reviewers that included this guy named edsel lorete. Edsel is a film columnist. His column is called final cut, and he's quite firm when it comes to picking on films worse than a stinking or decaying feces.
-
I always enjoy N. Vera's reviews. I even bought his book, Critic After Dark, when i spotted it during the cinemalaya film fest at the CCP. To be honest, i had a hard time looking for his book, been to powerplant and all over, always out of stock. Good thing i saw it at the CCP shop.
;D
Pa-authograph Mr. Vera. ;D

Sure, I'd love to, just need to come back to Manila one of these days.

Mr. Vera. Pm me when you get back to Manila. I need my book signed (laughs) I'm an independent movie film critic and I consider you one of my mentors. I'll treat you for lunch at rockwel if you ever hit manila again.
-
I don't know when that'll be. But thanks for the kind words.
-
How about our very own oggsmoggs?
If de Quiros is in why don't you throw in Butch Dalisay and Krip Yuson as well. Movies appear in all three columns in more or less the same frequency. And how about Pete Lacaba who's not only got the street cred (like Dalisay, he's written screenplays) but is also one of the moving forces in that excellently written and very literate pop culture magazine disguised as a chismis rag called "Yes!"
-
Butch can write a little because he's not all that active. Pete has to be more careful because he has plenty of friends in the industry. His articles are more trends and long views of the cinema, whenever.
He's also edited a pretty good book on SE Asian cinema, Philippines included. Worth looking for, if you can get it.

Not to mention a very cool boss.

Butch Dalisay's more of a fictionist than critic. But yeah, sometimes he critiques films. Haven't really read much of his film reviews. I'm more for his short stories---would put him on the same league as Greg Brilliantes.
-
Krip Yuson can write effectively and has been part of the Manunuri on its early years. I've always read his column in Phil. Star until now.
-
Krip helped write the script of Kid Huwag Kang Susuko (not a fan) and Boatman (fan).
