ask ko lang po kung ano sonic advantge of adding a tube buffer for cdp.  gumagawa din po ba kayo nito?  magkano po kasi i want to uprade the sound of my decade-old harman cdp. thanks!

hi,

first, a tube buffer must have a high input impedance and a low output impedance. the input of the buffer presents a high impedance load to your source such as your cdp and should improve your bass rolloff. this should also prevent any capacitive loading which may occur with highly capacitive interconnects thus preserving your highs. in it's casual configuration, a tube has been said to be a natural digital noise filter.

from a technical standpoint, the source should not "see" the tube buffer while the preceeding stage (i.e. amp) will not overload the output of the buffer due to it's low impedance.

it is rather prudent that I warn you, things like this are subjective in nature so as always, YMMV.

Im also using a harman cd player, hd755, and i got a tube buffer from jojo, for me malaki ang improvement, though i cant explain it in technical details, what i notice is naging refined ung highs which used to be harsh sounding, mas crisp ung bass at mas musical ang dating ng music. well ung lang ang na notice ko, isang gabi ko pa lang naman napapakinggan, mas mag iimprove pa daw after a while, sulit sa pera

i also owned a tube buffer made by jojoD. i'm not an odyofayl and doesn't know how to write a review. all i can say is there is a difference when using it and the difference is GOOOOD ;D

lakambini, abj104 and gearhead,

you need to pm JojoD as this is not the place or forum to conduct such transactions (buy/sell).

If you can try Dbx III or Pioneer EX9000 Dynamic Bass Expander, its purpose is cancelled the that goes with the audio signal, retrieve and refine the sonic impact of all frequency. I'm satisfied with its perfomance in Audio CD playing and even my TTable is connected to it. :o  ;D

sir joey... with due respect po, we're not dealing with sir jojo pa naman about the item. more like we're interested to know the outlay if we're to get this kind of investment. now, if we find the cost attractive... we can go ahead and deal directly with the master about ordering one.

peace.  :)

Had this played for several days now. kumbaga bini-break in pa lang.  Personally, my impression for this gear is that it acts like a digital noise filter.  Instantly, naging clear kasi yung vocals at background music nya.  It complimented very well my onkyo c-200 cdp & d9.6 ko.  So, yung tracks nina Susan Wong, Nora Jones, Josh Groban, Paul Potts & the likes sounded like heaven to me!  ;) :) :D  it's really a bang for the bucks! ;)

Sabi ng iba, hintayin ko pa daw ma-break in ng husto at saka ko mas madarama ang lubos na kaligayahan! ;D ;D ;D

now, re-cased using ATI chassis

bago na pala ang design ni jojo. naka stick out na ang mga tubes. galing ;)

Hi all,

I recently received my cd tube buffer courtesy of JojoD a few days ago. All i can say is whoa!!!! :)  First night pa lang of breaking in, i already started to hear the difference, subtle details in the music had suddenly appeared and the soudstage was better than ever. Glad to say that after a few more days of breaking in and it only got better. The highs were more refined and the voice transformed from harsh to silky smooooth.  a great add on indeed.

maraming salamat Sir JojoD.  Mabuhay Pinoy Audiophiles!!!  :)

sir jojo,

gud am, does this tube buffer has a similar effect as a tube preamp minus the volume control? would the sound quality improve further if i replace the tubes with better nos? tnx

regards

btw, paano nga pala namin papalitan ung tubes kasi parang di ko mabuksan ung casing eh, hehe

nope, most tube preamps have gain (with the exemption of the Decware ZSLA-1 among others) , the tube buffer has unity gain. 1 in, 1 out only. tube rolling is always welcome sir.

screws are inside the plastic footings...

After testing my cd buffer (courtesy of Jojo D) for more than a month now, I would say that it was one of the best decision I made in relation with improving the audio quality of my system.  It really complemented my gear (AMX 6L6 tube amp & Denon PCM-DCD 770 cd player) using a wharfdale 9.5 diamond series floorstanding speakers!

Thanks to Jojo for the patience in answering and explaining ALL my questions related to the tube buffer!!!! More so, of the option of using a NOS (with additional investment of course) tube.  Money well spent!!!!!!

Kudos to Jojo D!!!!!!!

Yes it will work with an iPod but of course the quality will also depend on the way your files are encoded. A low bitrate file will always sound "synthesized" no matter what. I use aac at 320kbps for my collection before I transferring to my iPod.

won't it conflict with the "character" of the music when paired to a tube preamp?  my set up kasi is tube preamp then SS poweramp.  Won't the tube preamps have inherent characteristics to "buffer" the signal from the cdp when it goes through its inputs?
Title: Re: tube buffer for cd player
Post by: accastil on Feb 15, 2010 at 10:14 AM
the objective of adding a buffer is for maximum power transfer from the buffer's input to output. hence, if youll be using the buffer inbetween your preamp and power amps, your preamp's capacity to deliver maximum power to you power amps will be improved.

how? the input impedance of a buffer is extremely high as its output impedance is extremely low. if this is not the case, then there will be no purpose of adding a "buffer".

Title: Re: tube buffer for cd player
Post by: ATJr. on Feb 15, 2010 at 04:27 PM
you add a buffer because you don't want the output of your source say a phono preamp to be loaded down by your interconnecting cables, specialy if those cables are quite long...... ;)

in other instances you do not need a buffer at all.... :D

but buffers do add flavoring if you will.... ;D
Title: Re: tube buffer for cd player
Post by: JoeyGS on Feb 15, 2010 at 04:50 PM
In the case of a CD player and a Pre-amp or Integrated Amplifier, both gears would have specifications and the corresponding input and output impedance are indicated accordingly.  You can then compare the data whether it matches.  These can also be applied between a preamp and a power amp.
