Title: Superman: The Ultimate Collection/Christopher Reeve Collection/Donner Cut
Post by: pioneer on Feb 15, 2006 at 09:38 AM
Warner Home Video unveils a Superman 14-Disc Collection
http://www.dvdreview.com

During a press event earlier today, Warner Home Video made a fairly sensational announcement that is sure to please fans of the “Superman” films. The studio has a 14-disc DVD set in the making of "Superman." The set, called Superman: Ultimate Collector’s Edition is filled with featurettes, documentaries, and other stuff surrounding the Superman feature films, as well as all these films themselves.
However, best of all, the set will also contain the Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2!
As fans will undoubtedly know, Richard Donner was relieved as a director from the film and replaced by Richard Lester before he could complete the film. Still, 70% of the movie were finished at the time but never released, of course ,though part of his footage was actually used in Lester’s “Superman2 “ version. But not nearly all of it. There is about 45 minutes of footage that has never been seen before – especially not the way Richard Donner had envisioned it!
Now, the studio is working with Donner to create the cut of the movie that he had in mind originally, which is VERY cool, of course, painstakingly restored. During the press event we were treated to a five-minute clip from the film - the opening sequence which had never before been seen - and it was a blast!
Get ready for this one, because it’s going to be huge!

Bad news for those who are hoping that the movies (including Donner's Superman II) will be released separately.  Below is a post from dvdreview.com dated 2/1/2006:

Donner won't stand alone

As was previously announced, Richard Donner's version of Superman II is scheduled to be released as part of the Ultimate Superman Set. Sadly, Warner will not bre releasing the cut as a single release at this time.

Considering that Superman:  Ultimate Collector's Edition is a 14-disc set, ilang libo naman kaya ito?  I already have the four Superman movies and Supergirl, kaya I'm only interested in the Superman II Director's cut.

We can't give you the exact details of what you'll be seeing in the 14 disc set, as that is all in progress at the present time, However we can confirm the following important facts.. We will be releasing both the extended cut of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE (the one on DVD now) and the original, shorter theatrical version as well. Further, we will be releasing both the SUPERMAN II theatrical cut, and the "Donner cut" both in the box, or available singularly. Lastly, SUPERGIRL is coming, but SUPERGIRL will not be part of the 14 disc SUPERMAN set.

Oh, BTW, Superman Returns will be part of the 14-Disc Set... ; ;)

This set is turning out to be one of Warner's most sentimental projects.

I just read the April 2006 issue of Wizard magazine and according to them, Sometime in December, Warner Bros. will release a 14-disc box set that will include "Superman Returns" and an extra disc; both the shorter version of "Superman: The Movie" and it's extended cut; the "Superman 2" theatrical cut and the "Donner cut," which incorporates much of original director Richard Donner's version of the movie (partway through shooting, Donner was replaced by Richard Lester); plus, 2-disc special editions of "Superman 3" and "Superman 4."

Warner Home Video has made the following announcement about the upcoming "Superman" DVDs:

On November 28, in celebration of the year of Superman, Warner Home Video will release a host of DVDs, all starring the late Christopher Reeve in his landmark portrayal of the Man of Steel. Leading the way will be the long-awaited Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut ($24.98 SRP), directed by Donner and representing Superman II as it was originally conceived and intended to be filmed. An overwhelmingly requested title, the movie features Donner's original footage, shot but never used before, including a never-before-seen beginning, a never-before-seen resolution, with 15 minutes of restored footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El and much more.

Other titles to be released include Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition ($39.92 SRP) which features both the DVD debut of the 1978 theatrical version as well as the 2001 extended edition with commentary from director Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz, archival footage of additional scenes and screen tests.

Richard Lester's ever-popular Superman II will be available in a new Two Disc Special Edition ($26.99 SRP) including a new featurette, vintage television specials and additional vault elements; and Superman III and IV Deluxe Editions ($19.97 SRP).

Finally, The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection ($79.92 SRP) will be offered in an 8-disc boxed set including all the above (except Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut).    :o :o :o

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut

Superman II will delight fans who, for years, have been imploring Warner Home Video via voluminous numbers of petitions, letters, phone calls and e-mails to release the Donner cut.

In fact, Donner had already shot most of the Superman II footage during Superman: The Movie. But as production on the sequel continued, creative differences between the director and the film's producers became irreconcilable and Donner left the project. Although Richard Lester was hired to finish production, he chose to make major changes to the film, leaving only vestiges of Donner's original vision and concepts in the version of Superman II that was ultimately released to theaters.

Now, nearly thirty years later, Warner Home Video is honored to grant the wishes of countless Superman fans. With this DVD release, Richard Donner has become the first director in history to be able to complete a film he left during production with nearly all his footage "in the can." Adding back a substantial amount of that unused footage, the director has seen his original vision restored and brought to fruition.

Most notably, the "Donner cut" restores the Marlon Brando role, filmed for, but not included in the final theatrical release version of Superman II. The legendary Brando's performance as Jor-El has finally been restored in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son.

With so many other changes, large and small, including a variety of Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman, this Superman II will prove to be an eye-opening experience and an important addition to film history.

Superman: The Movie (1978/2001) Four-Disc Special Edition

A box-office smash, an Academy Award® winner and a fan favorite since it first flew into theatres in December 1978, Superman: The Movie assembles an "A List" cast and creative contingent. At its heart is Christopher Reeve's intelligent, affectionate portrayal of a most human Man of Steel.

The movie's legacy was amplified when director Richard Donner revisited this beloved adventure 22 years later and integrated eight minutes into the film. Enjoy more footage of the Krypton Council, a glimpse of stars of prior Superman incarnations, more of Jor-El underscoring his son's purpose on Earth and an extended sequence inside Lex Luthor's gauntlet of doom.

Superman II Two-Disc Special Edition (1980)

Unwittingly released from Phantom Zone imprisonment, three super-powered Kryptonian criminals (Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halloran) plan to enslave Earth - just when Superman (Christopher Reeve) decides to show a more romantic side to Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Gene Hackman (as Lex Luthor) also returns from the first film with a top supporting cast, witty Richard Lester direction and visuals that astound and delight.

Superman III Deluxe Edition (1983)

Meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming wiz. Reeve reprises his role, deepening his character's human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. When Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve plays both roles with dazzling skill.

Superman IV The Quest For Peace (1987)

Christopher Reeve not only stars as the title hero again but also helped develop the movie's provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow).

Supergirl

Creative forces behind Superman: The Movie bring another DC Comics hero to life with this fun- and effects-packed adventure about the Girl of Steel. Helen Slater plays the title role, battling a sorceress (Faye Dunaway) for control of an alien power orb. Peter O'Toole and Mia Farrow add more starpower.

SUPERMAN and all related characters and elements are trademarks of and © DC Comics.

So the 8disc Boxed Set hindi pa kasama yung Superman II Director's Cut?...Geez we have to buy pa a separate one?   :o

I dont think this one will be included too....

This was released about three weeks ago now, and as of present it seems sold out. Whats interesting about this LE was the fact that Bestbuy wrongfully advertised it (thus DVD collectors were suprised when they saw it In store and ransacked the limited quantity).

This is the 2disc limited edition of the Look Up In The Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman

Some features from the 2disc

- 2nd disc is an exclusive production diary from Brian Singer and some added facts about Superman
- 5 Superman Mini Poster Cards (replica of theatrical posters of the past Superman films)

Yes, it was not available at any stores (even Amazon, maybe in the future at the marketplace section with a JackedUp price due to its scarcity)

There is another store but not in US, I think it was in Canada who got the rights to release it with French soundtrack.

Finally, The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection ($79.92 SRP) will be offered in an 8-disc boxed set including all the above (except Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut).    :o :o :o

This is perfect for those who already bought the old 4-Disc "The Complete Superman Collection" - it already has the interesting extras for Superman I, and we could care less about extras for the last two turkeys. The SII Donner Cut is really the only one we'd want to add to our collection.

I commend Warner for this decision. Unlike most greedy studios that make you double/triple dip to get ONE additional item that you'd like to add to your previously purchased set, they've made the one new thing worth collecting a stand-alone disc.

Peter Jackson... take note!  ;D

I'm really glad that Warner has decided to come up with individual releases for each movie.  At least, we'll be able to have choices in what to get.  Unlike if they put everything in just one package, then you'll be forced to get the whole set even if you just want to have the Superman II:  Donner Cut.

It's a good thing they seperated the Donner Superman II from the box set unlike the Matrix Box set which contains the upgraded version of the Matrix that has not yet been released seperately.

From Supermanhomepage.com:

Access Hollywood (http://www.accesshollywood.com/l) aired several scenes from “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut” on Friday’s episode and those scenes are now available to be viewed here (http://video.accesshollywood.com/player.html?dlid=24948/).

The video's resolution is quite low -- I just don't know if it's because of my dial-up connection. Based on the three short scenes shown, I can't wait for November 28 to arrive!  It's going to be my birthday gift to myself.   ;D  ;D

You don't really have to buy the Christopher Reeve boxed set, since III and IV are quite BAD, unless you want to own them "for completion." Superman Returns is a direct sequel to Superman II, and pretends Superman III and IV never happened.

The 4-Disc Superman 1 is overkill - the fourth disc's features are non-essential, and you really don't need the theatrical cut if you have a director's cut. No scenes were shifted nor deleted, there were just additions.

So personally, I'd just go for the current 2-Disc (or single flipper) Superman, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, and Superman Returns. But that's in theory.

I'm "Mr. Completion" in reality.  ;D

==========

Thanks for the link, rafgar! Now I'm really excited about the Donner cut.  :D

I was looking at some of the scenes in the Richard Donner cut versus Dick Lester in the Access hollywood feed. Dick Lester's action scenes are quite campy compared to what Donner originally shot especially with the final battle between the 3 bad guys. For example, i always found the shot where Superman struck Non causing him to hit the  Empire State Building to be out of place. Donner's version of the same scene was much better.

Very colorful. I think the cover art of the old releases was a bit classier, though. And I find it really weird that they didn't put Richard Pryor on the cover of Superman III.

Here's the one I want to get NOW:

Now this one I do really like better.  :D They did put the name of Richard Donner on the title! I'll have this ordered first, then I'll think about later of the other four. I kind of don't like the way the art covers were designed for these, placing the faces of the other characters just like that on the bottom. November and December is really a pocket draining one with all the gift sets looming.

Considering that these are special deluxe editions, the artworks are really ugly.  It looked like an amateur cover artist did these.  I agree with Mr. Hankey in saying that the artworks of the original releases were classier.

I find them really cheesy!  for me best would be different depictions of the S logo.  Like one is the traditional red & yellow, silver, maybe gold or even black & red.

Just noticed it, Amazon listed the running time for the Donner's Cut as 116 minutes, whereas the Special Edition is 127 minutes. Is this really as it is? Hoping someone could give more details on the difference.

Oh wow.

They changed the cover art of the Donner cut from this:

(http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/2023/superman2dcdvdft5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

To this:

(http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/5175/superman2donnerdvdis1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Warner, what the frak is wrong with you people??? I mean, of all the new "Superman" releases, the original cover art of the Donner cut was the only one I thought looked presentable! This new one looks like - a cartoon parody or something.

$100 online excluding shipping for 16 discs is a great bargain.  ;D  Very tempting to get.

Nakakapanghinayang lang.  With the inevitablity of DVDs becoming junk in 3 years, accdg to some early HD adopters.   :(  Though maybe not that soon here.

But no doubt the contents should be timeless in themselves.

Technology is always evolving even as we speak.  If you always worry about newer models on the horizon, then you'll never enjoy what we have today.

This is a great set sir av-phile1.  It's going to be a classic collector's item someday.  So go get it.  HD will not catch on here in the philippines til my conservative guess at the earliest of 5years.  Unless of course you have the moolah to splurge.

Ako I'm sure to get it.  I'm just waiting right now for the official details of the R3 version coz it would probably only cost half the price of a R1.  But if the contents & packaging are not worth it...I'd get the R1.

Those of you who have pre-ordered copies of Warner Home Video's forthcoming Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition might want to think twice. Due to a massive technical blunder, the Superman III: Deluxe Edition discs contain the original 2001 release of the film, rather than the advertised disc with commentary, additional scenes and a vintage featurette.

Reports indicate that The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection and the individual release of Superman III: Deluxe Edition are unaffected. At this time there has been no word on whether or not Warner intend to issue replacement discs. Even if replacement discs are made available, non-US residents who purchased the set will most likely be left out in the cold. When you combine this with the fact that the advertised original 1978 Dolby Stereo soundtrack for Superman: The Movie is also missing, what could have been the year's best release becomes a less than attractive proposition...

Thank God I decided I could do without Bryan Singer's Video Diary and cancelled my Amazon pre-order of this title!  ;D

This is a big nightmare for Warner, especially since Superman Returns didn't even come close to breaking even, and they needed the revenues from this set to make up for that misfire in this expensive film franchise they just resurrected.

Now that's kinda stupid for a big studio like Warner!

Now that would be a terrible nightmare!!!

Not only Warner but amazon as well.  I can only imagine how Amazon will deal with their international customers!!!  Maraming aangal.  It will cost them coz as far as I'm concerned, Amazon does not require their patrons to actually return defective DVDs!!!!!!

Instead of making a killing out of this much anticipated DVD, Warner will lose money on it...  what will all that mailings of replacement DVDs.   Whatever charges Amazon incurred will have to reimbursed by Warner, since it's their fault...  Actually, mabilis pa nga sa Amazon (for Warner) since all they need to do is ship an extra disc to all buyers of the set... so ship cost lang ang talo (DVD cost next to nothing).

But since hindi pa released ito sa R1 (except online buyers), they could just hold the release (for brick-and-mortar stores), and bundle an extra disc with it... so you get 15-discs...

But this could be boon for the local Warner distributors. ;)

Our copies are fine. If you purchased the R3 UC, Superman III contains all of the features missing from the R1. The isolated issue with R1 version probably occurred when Burbank sent the masters to the various factories that replicated the discs.

It's easy to tell: play your Superman III disc SE/UC and if you get the language selection menu, the Superman and Superman Returns trailers followed by the SE menu then you're fine.

Official Statement from Warner (USA):

Bonus content was omitted from the "Superman III: Deluxe Edition" in the 14-disc "Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition." Furthermore, disc one of "Superman: The Movie - Four Disc Special Edition" did not include the Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. Neither disc is known to be physically defective in any way.

Warner Home Video wants to extend apologies to all of our loyal Superman fans who've waited so patiently for these great collections and has taken immediate steps to correct these errors with the intention of standing behind our product 100%.

Replacement discs can be obtained by calling: 800-553-6937 between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM Pacific Standard Time. The exchange program applies only to purchases of the "Superman III: Deluxe Edition" in the "Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition" and to disc one of "Superman: The Movie - Four Disc Special Edition," available as a single title, as well as in "The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection" and in the "Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition."

Hi. May I know the difference between the R1 and R3 version? I checked the R3 version and it only says 13 discs while the R1 has 14 discs. What is missing in R3? The reason why I'm asking is because that's the only reason why im hesitant to buy the R3 version.

Any info will be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks :)

Most of the online reports I've seen where the set was defective were in cases where the set shipped before the official R1 release date, November 28th. Warner was aware of the problem by then, and considering this set shipped out 3 days after the street date, it was probably already corrected.

I was very upset last night when I opened my package for this. Alright, I did have the correct version of Spuerman I and III, what made me furious is that the disc "You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman" is not included. What I got is duplicate copies of the 2nd disc of Superman Returns!!!  >:( >:( >:(

Take a pic & send it via e-mail if you got it from Amazon.  They'll refund it and you'll get to keep that set.

It's from Amazon. I already sent request for replacement this morning and what I got is the automated reply saying that I should contact Warner Home Video....

Use the report a problem function of the site and word your complaint strongly. Tell them this is a different problem from the Superman I/III issues, so it does not fall under the "report to Warner" standard reply they've been giving.

This has happened to me with Amazon in the past, where a boxed set contained a duplicate disc and as such, a missing one. Word your complaint such that you make it clear you just want one disc replaced, that way they'll know you're not someone who likes to take advantage of their customer service and get duplicates of titles despite their being intact (which happens a lot if you read some of the atrocious posts on these boards from people who even indirectly brag about doing it).

Mine was worded something like: "I DO NOT want a replacement set, I have no use for it and it will just add clutter to my home. I just want you to send me Disc 2. If you would like, I will send you back the duplicate Disc 3, then you can process my request after you've received it. I can send it by registered mail."

Their email told me they cannot send single disc replacements for boxed sets, and to just keep the incorrect set with their compliments and their apologies. When I received the replacement set, it was actually UNSEALED, and had a handwritten Post-It stuck on the top: "Opened for inspection purposes to confirm proper disc contents."

Let us know how it works out.

To add and emphasize my point earlier...take a pic showing the duplicate discs and send as attachment.  At least nakikita nila na talagang doble.

Just fyi. I did write them about the problem (attaching the pics also) but still, they insisted that for me to call Warner's hotline. Then I requested for a refund, and they replied for me to return the set before they'll do the refund. Oh well...

That was rather rude bro.  First time I heard of Amazon's customer service that inefficient.

Guess I have to charge it to bad experience then...  :'( They seemed to be not trying to analyze the problem I presented. Maybe they're more focused on the wrong disc version...

That's really odd. Sorry to hear about that.

By the way, where are you based, RadicalDude? In the States or in the Philippines?

Philippines, sir.

That makes it doubly-odd.

Maybe Amazon's overworked with Christmas orders, which is why they're less accomodating than usual. Unfortunately for us based here, it's not like we can boycott them for lousy service, since it's difficult to find other US-based DVD stores that actually accept local credit cards and ship items here.  :(

Sorry to hear about that. I'd press further on the issue with them, citing my years of purchases, but I'm not sure what good it'll do you at this point.

I sympathize with you bro.  Must be the pressures of the Xmas season indeed kaya medyo mataray.

Ok here's what I would do.  Write a final letter effectively saying the following....

I have been a loyal paying customer for a long time already and have been satisfied with my purchases moreso with the quality of customer service your site provides.

Whilst I acknowledge the error in the contents of the Superman:  Ultimate Collection is not of your doing but Warner's, please understand that I purchased the set directly from Amazon and not Warner.  Thus and with all due respect, the responsibility of making sure a customer receives a merchandise in correct and good order which was paid for in good faith falls upon the merchant store which is Amazon and not the manufacturer (Warner).

With this in mind, I hope you would reconsider your firm order for me to deal with Warner directly as this would be close to impossible as I am not based in your country.

Should this still fall on deaf ears, then maybe that's it.

I won't boycott Amazon, that's for sure, since I only buy R1 items. That's why I felt sad when this thing happened. All I want is to have a replacement. Even if they'll tell me to keep the item, it's not worth having a collection with missing part.

Anyway Mr. Hankey, thanks for the support. Likewise, DVD_Freak.  :)

i think amazon's just too tired of dealing with this superman fiasco.

just like some of you i pre-ordered this item thru amazon. when i learned about the problem, my order has already shipped to a relative in the US.

i immediately emailed amazon on how to return this product for an exchange?
and they immediately responded that i dont need to return the set and they will simply just refund the money i paid for this special case. i few days later, credit was returned to my credit card.

maybe they just LOST a lot of money because of this and now they just want the other buyers to deal with warner directly.

major f**k up by warner if you ask me..  >:(
poor amazon...

Hey Guys,

Got my copy through a fellow member to find out about the SupermanIII disc issue. I emailed Amazon and got an initial reply that I need to call Warner instead. However, after several email exchanges, they refunded the amount as a gift certificate instead. Although like most of you, I also feel sad for Amazon.  :'(

I also tried emailing Warner and all I got was an email directing me to the FAQs. And guess what, they will only replace it if you send the whole item back with the original package. What the...??!!!  >:( >:(

Here's an excerpt from Warner (http://www2.warnerbros.com/main/help/whv/whv_dvd_help.html (http://www2.warnerbros.com/main/help/whv/whv_dvd_help.html[/color))
"Please return the product to us so that our technical department can review it. Please note that the DVD must be returned in its original case. If you are returning a box set, you must also send the whole box set back. Please return to the following address: Warner Home Video, 4000 Warner Blvd., Burbank, CA 91522: Attn: Business Affairs. Once the product is received and reviewed someone will be in touch. Please remember to include your contact information."

Warner really created a major pain in the *ss blunder on this one. I wish Warner get sued for this!

Sorry for losing my temper...hehehe.. got carried away for a moment there... ;D ::)

I think it's fair that the problem should be addressed by Warner and not Amazon since an initial disclaimer was posted in the product page. Also, this is a manufacturing error and not retail operations negligence.  Case in point, Narnia Companion Book. For returns and refunds, it is but protocol to return the product to the US since Amazon is paying for the shipment regardless of cost incurred. I see no hassle then.

Amazon is giving goodwill replacements on a case-to-case basis. They may evaluate your account based on potential business gains or already actualized business of each account.

Got just the Donner cut of II a few weeks back. More satisfying film than the Lester cut (some scenes of which I found too corny even at the time of its release).
