Title: The Amazing Race Asia
Post by: MultipleAngles on Mar 16, 2006 at 02:50 AM
Tried looking for a thread for this:

Anyone applying for The Amazing Race Asia? I was considering it, but took a gander at this portion of the requirements:

If the producers (the "Producers") of the Program select your team as one of the teams that they would like to interview as part of the semi-finalist interview process, you and your teammate must be willing to travel together at your own expense to be interviewed by the Producers at a specified country in Asia (which is yet to be determined). The dates and times of the semi-finalist interviews will be set by the Producers sometime in April of 2006 and may be revised by Producers in its sole discretion. All travel and lodging expenses for these semi-finalist interviews will be at the applicants' sole expense, and the applicants will not be compensated for time off from work or otherwise.

ow

Saw another clause that cracked me up:

All applicants must be in good physical and mental health

I can think of a few former racers who do NOT fit this description at all.

Here's the latest update on The Amazing Race Asia:

Over 1000 teams apply for AXN's 'The Amazing Race Asia'
Applications reveal the passionate, adventurous and crazy side of Asia

Mumbai, 10 April 2006 - AXN's The Amazing Race Asia looks set to feature some of Asia's most passionate and colourful characters, after registration for The Amazing Race Asia closed on 31 March. AXN received over one thousand applications from all corners of Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, India, Korea, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Brunei and even Nepal.

The hopeful applicants come from a broad and fascinating cross-section of Asia. From rich businessmen to people who need a new start in life, and from young students to the elderly, the applications revealed that people from all walks of life have gone to extreme lengths to compete in The Amazing Race Asia.

Hopeful contestants stripped, danced, cried and begged for the adventure of a lifetime, demolishing the myth that Asians are conservative and reserved when it comes to television.

Applicants performed crazy stunts, acted out Amazing Race fantasies, and bragged about past glories in their videos, which brought out the creative and quirky side of Asia, and demonstrated the passion Asians have for The Amazing Race Asia.

The application process also showed that the digital revolution has well and truly taken hold in Asia. More than a third of the applications were shot and edited professionally, and the AXN application committee was incredibly impressed by the quality of the video applications. The videos were so entertaining and inventive that they would make a fantastic program on their own.

Potential amazing racers also gave some intriguing reasons why they want to take on the challenging race, guaranteeing there will be plenty of personal drama as The Amazing Race Asia unfolds. For example, some teams are couples who want to revive the love in their relationships, while others want to use the race to rediscover themselves. For some, the race would be a once in a lifetime chance for challenge and adventure.

"The response has been amazing, and AXN wants to thank everyone for the tremendous effort they have put into their applications, and for the passion they have shown for The Amazing Race Asia," said Ricky Ow, General Manager of SPE Networks - Asia.

oks lang di matanggap, sana hwag naman ipakita yung application video...

Ewan ko lang, but based on this:

Quote
The videos were so entertaining and inventive that they would make a fantastic program on their own.

And also this, from the contract you signed:

Quote
w. By submitting an application, each applicant agrees to release, discharge and hold harmless the Producers and AXN from all claims and damages arising out of his/her participation in the application process or the Program itself, and to have his or her name, voice and likeness used at the Producers' discretion as part of the Program, or as part of promotions for the Program, in any and all media now known or hereafter devised

I'm guessing that means... see you on TV soon, AsiaStreak!  ;D

The teams have been announced.

Out of 10 teams, two are from the Philippines:

1. ABS-CBN's Ernie & Jeena Lopez a.k.a. "The Merry Couple"

2. Aubrey Miles & Jackie Yu a.k.a. "The Beauties"

Medyo weird - AXN already gave the teams nicknames. Isn't it usually the fans who create those nicknames and post them at TWoP?

The Official Website is up: The Amazing Race Asia (http://amazing-race-asia.axn-asia.com)

Interestingly, Aubrey and Jackie are the most favored to win by Asian viewers. Does that mean there are way too many Pinoys on the site... or just too many horny guys? O0

Oh, and you can sign up to play The Amazing Race Asia Online Race (http://amazing-race-asia.axn-asia.com/promotions/online-race/index.html). The prize is US$ 2000, and you get to go on an online adventure. O, Php 100,000 din yun, uupo ka lang sa harap ng computer mo.

Sali na!

Lakas talaga ng Pinoy contingent...! Just checked the forums on AXN Asia & guess who got the most number of posts??? ;D

K-Lite 103.5 is currently doing its The Amazing Race 10 weekly betting pool every Monday, where listeners bet on which team will be eliminated on each episode. I think I'll have to post DJ Vitto Lazatin on suggesting a betting pool for the Amazing Race Asia...!!!

That non disclosure agreement is really iron clad. My wife said that they have been badgering Ernie about the race at work and he has been firmly tight-lipped about it -- no amount of cajoling and ribbing they did could make Ernie talk, not even something as harmless as his experience about the race.

I do hope that they've won it though. Ernie and Jeena are experienced travellers and extreme racers so they've got that going for them.

Im all about the "YAYGOPINOYTEAMSYAY" but are you kidding me with Aubrey and Jackie's “How’s my hair?” while go carting, “Powder my nose” while driving and ”I wanna shop!” while rappelling?!? Geez, it makes their whole "girly-girl persona" too scripted. And I can very much sympathize when Ernie and Jeena hit that car!! Haha

And you just gotta love the "Mabuhay ang Pilipinas" bit when both teams were helping each other out. Pinoy teams ftw!

The first episode was great; the production was of high quality and comparable to the quality of the USA TAR.

I'm rooting for Ernie and Jeena, and the two Singapore girls. Don't like Aubrey and whatshername, who both come off as pretentious, airheaded bimbos too preoccupied with themselves everytime they open their mouths. "Give him a kiss and a hug" is probably the stupidest quote of the first episode, followed by "What level?" "Ninth".

ah... to be young, fit, adventurous AND EXTREMELY LOADED. lol.

**jealous** ... but they seem like an extremely likeable couple. i'd root for them fer shure.  ;)

(i wonder if they'll donate the prize somewhere ... if they win, that is.)

I told my wife that with the $100,000 prize Ernie will now have loose change, hehe. Seriously though, Ernie and Jeena are a cool couple. They are two very down to earth and simple people. Ernie even takes the MRT to work!

I do hope they win.

You forgot one! When they got into the car, they go, "Is this the hand brake?" and then the hood of the car pops open!  ;D

Ernie & Jeena are so likeable, but... is it because I'm Pinoy? Are they coming across as "mayabang" to other countries? First there's the "she owns a rock climbing gym" comment, and then "I've competed in circuit car racing before" when they got to the go-carts.

Other thoughts:

1. Wow, way to go, M&M! I had them pegged as first team to be eliminated, and they actually came in first place!

2. The interracial version of Team Cha-Cha-Cha hilarious!

3. The himbos are stupider than the bimbos.

In any of the Amazing Race seasons, has there ever been a time where the first leg of the race was already a non-elimination leg?

Nope, never. And:

[SPOILER: Highlight to Read]Allan Wu announced there would be SEVEN elimination legs, while I heard from a reliable source that TAR-Asia has THIRTEEN Episodes. So expect a non-elimination leg almost every other episode. I guess that's the other difference between an American and an Asian budget, the first being the 10% prize for the winner.  ;D[/END SPOILER]

Aubrey even attempted to raise the hood so she can slam it down...futile attempt, so she just pushed the hood downwards  ;D

I guess kahit na they're trying to project themselves as bimbos they still had a good first race unlike their indian male counterpart na too trying hard to project their alpha males image eh kulang naman sa brains (biased  ;D)

I hope Ernie and Jeena wins, they look cool together  :).

I disagree. It didn't ruin the excitement of the episode unless you knew beforehand that it was a non-elimination round... and if you did, you deserve that for reading spoilers before you watched the episode.  ;D

I mean, the episode was exciting, but the resolution turned out to be a HUGE disappointment.  :P

what's the schedule on studio 23?

i was waiting last night but it was not shown, or i just missed it?

It's an AXN production, so it's their exclusive. Studio 23 doesn't have broadcast rights for it. I think they might, though - after the entire season has finished its run on AXN.

I guess since this Amazing Race is a little closer to home, it's sensible to keep all the racers a little while longer instead of kicking them out right away. That way, we get to know them a little more, and the teams get to know the others' strengths and weaknesses; Think of it as a warm-up round :). I agree, though, it was still exciting despite the non-elimination at the end.

we didn't say it "spoiled" it, did we? LOL... it just seems so "anti-climactic"... here you go, seeing these people scrammble to be in the top 9... and no one goes home. what a way to kill the "excitement", don't you think? it just seems too early to put in a non-elimination. the only times those really work is if the team you are rooting for finishes last... and viewers haven't seen enough of these people to even root or be emotionally invested in them.

i actually did a "faith hill" when i watched the end of the pilot. heh heh.

my brother's comment on Aubrey/Jackie: "Ano ba yan? ang aarte! puro... i wanna go shopping, fix my hair, powder my nose, is my hair okay?"  :P

but all in all....anybody noticed that the racers are all like - super nice? no one's is sniping at another team, and no teams yet are sniping at each other.......will they be able to maintain this "niceness" in the coming episodes?  the teams are really helping one another  ;D

made me realize - are asians really THAT nice?  :D ;)

btw, anyone else noticed that the taxis in KL would really rip off the passenger? when Andy and Laura (?) got in the taxi on the way to kompleks kraf, the taxi encircled the block of Times Square first before going on to the highway? When we were there in KL for a vacation, the exact same thing happened to us! grabe talaga! And the side comment of Aubrey when they got off the taxi "RIP OFF"

the Malaysian couple arrived first but they didn't follow the correct forest trail so they had to do it again kaya sila yung 1st and 5th team!!   ;D

i was thinking about the same thing when Ernie hit the car.  gave the car owner his contact details and Ernie got the car owner's contact details then he will send him a new car nalang!!  haha  although mayabang din nga yung mga comments nila, mukhang ok pa din sila  :)

been thinking of this even before the show started...
Americans can practically travel almost anywhere in the world without needing a visa...
Filipinos practically needs a visa just to travel anywhere in the world...
kung South East Asian countries lang ok pa ang Philippine passport, but outside of it wala na...    :-\

kung South East Asian countries lang ok pa ang Philippine passport, but outside of it wala na...    :-\

Contractually, you submit your passport to the producers before the race, and they facilitate all the visas you will need, including many to countries you won't be going to - to deliberately mislead you. The passport is returned to you just as you are about to travel to the starting destination, so you won't have time to research the countries whose visas you find on your passport.

It's supposedly a race around the world, not just Asia, but I'm not sure if they actually left our continent.

When out of all the teams that left money for the last placers, they chose to only show Ernie & Jeena, I had a feeling this might happen.

But their elimination made things more exciting. It's hard to say which remaining team appears to have an advantage. Ernie & Jeena were miles ahead of everyone else.

Anyway now I have no choice but to root for Jacqui and Aubrey! I hope they do well in the next legs. I also like Laura and Andy, I love their humor. It was so funny when Laura sort of tripped seconds before reaching the mat and Andy had this goofy "Nooooo!!!" expression and had to come back and help her.

It looks that way. Or maybe he's too embarassed to say that they were the first team to be eliminated, hehe.

According to my wife, Jeena and their kid are chauffeured all over the city. Ernie rides the MRT to and from work but he gets picked up by the chauffeur at the Buendia Station. When he feels really "pedestrian" he drives himself to work... in a royal blue Z3 Roadster (though this was four years ago, I don't know what his new car is now).

Kakahiya! Back-to-back Pinoy eliminations!

But seriously - this is going to turn into a boring show. The driven alpha team is gone, the comedy relief bimbos are gone, and the Rob & Amber wannabes break a leg next week. Who's left to keep viewers' interest?

hahahaha to the bimbos, who left us with one last quote of the week:

"We're taking the 2 hour penalty"  ;D

Who's left to keep viewers' interest?

um...maybe a fight between the himbos and the Malaysian couple? heh.

Yehey! I can sleep early na during Thursdays  :).

Since both our teams are already out, I'll just keep myself posted by watching a rerun or browse this thread.

The worst thing about it was that they were starting to grow on me. The bimbo antics were so obviously an act. I think the producers wanted to bring in stereotypical characters so they were encouraged to ham it up for the camera. But then they were also the only team that was actually having fun throughout the race. All of the other teams were just too serious -- particularly the Malaysian couple. The guy looked like he is perpetually about to bust a vein. The other two all-girl teams are just too dry. I always get surprised when they cut to the Malaysian all-girl team because I constantly forget that they are in the race. they were that forgettable.

Have you guys noticed the musical scoring of the show is severely lacking? It's like they have only two or three pieces of canned music they play as background music to help create the mood of the show. It's so repetitive throughout each episode. A far cry from the US counterpart where the music cues are actually more in-sync with on-screen occurences.

Ah, the things you notice when the teams you want to win are already gone...  ::)

Medyo bland talaga tong editon na to.

Episode 5 na there's still no major drama and conflicts among the teams and within teams. Plus ang dami ng nagquit on different episodes. The casting was uninspired, most of the teams are mehh and blahh..

^^The Indian himbos were eliminated--they actually arrived ahead of 3 teams, but were slapped with a 1 hour penalty because they hitched a ride in a private car. ha-ha!  :D

Sharon & Melody (the girls from Singapore) arrived last, but were told that they were still in the race.

I still watch this, I like it better than the USA version now, as I hate all the teams remaining in TAR10 and stopped watching it. Just don't understand why this Asian edition has a lot of high jumping and climbing tasks--can't they be more original?

I haven't seen a single episode of that since the Cho Brothers were eliminated.  ;D

So we can mock the gay guy as he cries every week. I mean, come on! If you're gong to cry and/or quit at every single difficult task, why the hell did you join The Amazing Race in the first place?

Sirhan is the most limp wristed Amazing Race contestant I've seen.

I won't say he is the most limp wristed reality show participant though because the gays at Project Runway takes that crown -- oh, and Jay Alexander in Top Model.

Same question I had. Everybody knows that Amazing Race involves climbing, jumping and swimming. If you can't bear these tasks then don't join the race. Kaya I'm really dissapointed when our teams got eliminated. They were more enjoyable to watch (biased  ;D)

Mr Hankey You like the Cho brothers? I hate them. They are the reason for the existence of the dragging and useless 6 pack alliance. For someone so smart (both of them have graduate degrees right?), they cannot seem to grasp the idea that it's just a game. They kept on moralizing every single thing. I prefer the healthier perspective of the beauty queens regarding the competition. Nothing was personal, it was just a game.

But anyway Season 10 seems to be dividing the show's fans, some say it's one of their best seasons (including me), some say it's a medocire season

yay! eliminated na yun indian models  ;D  anyone else noticed that they are sore losers? didnt see any interview at the end of the episode - and how many times does show always cuts to the other teams saying " no, we cannot hitch a ride in a private car, its against the rules" - then the sourgraping of the eliminated team that they were not aware that such a rule existed!

just proves to show....very low reading comprehension  ;D ;D ;D

I was rooting for them purely on the basis of Asian pride, but they really deserved to be eliminated when they did (http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=53655.msg637760#msg637760). It was not an intelligent game they were playing, and I really dislike Bama, so I couldn't get the logic of the six pack alliance. I like the hicks, they entertained me with their syaning-ness.  ;D

Yeah, they actually had TWO high jumping tasks this week. In the States, there are usually only one or two at the most for the entire season. The New Zealand leg of TAR-USA was also more fun - with White Water Rafting and Zorbing!

The rules also seem rather mandatory for TAR-Asia. For a rule violation, the Indians lost time from the time they stepped on the mat last week. This week, Andy & Laura also had a rule violation, but their penalty will be applied at the start of the next leg. I'm not a fan of the Indian Models and I find Andy & Laura fun to watch, but that's just unfair.

They must have designed the entire race for Sirhan to come up with all the dramatic tension for this edition.  ;D At the rate it's going, this could give the Family Edition a run for its money as the most boring TAR edition ever... and I saw that till the end.  ;D

Complaining but still watching, hehe. Tagal pa ng February.

I also did not understand why Andy and Laura's penalty will be imposed at the Pitstart of the next race. Going into this episode, I was getting the feeling that there are certain teams that the production wants to keep for as long as possible.

And is Sirhan the whiniest and the most yellow- bellied TAR participant in its history? I was hoping someone would throw him out of the bungie platform without attaching the bungie cord.

Yeah. My jaw actually dropped when Sharon and Melody were eliminated, since because of the Andy & Laura "start of the next race" penalty, I had assumed last night was a non-elimination leg. I thought they still wanted to penalize them despite it being non-elimination. It turns out they wanted to save them. The show lost credibility points with me.

Boring na, incredible pa.  ;D

When I think about it, though - when Colin & Christie were in the Philippines, they told their taxi driver they needed to be fast, and he complied, saying "I have no choice but to break the law," to which they said, "Good." They didn't receive a time penalty for that at all. Still, imposed penalties whould be uniform to be fair. From the way he stammers, you get the feeling Allan Wu is just making up the rules as teams hit the pitstop. Maybe he has a crush on Laura.

Or Andy.  ;D

I guess the "fine line" distinction here is that in the case of Andy it was him who was driving and did the actual breaking of the law. With C&C, it was "their driver's" fault. (Another possible difference is that Andy was actually caught.)

What I also found unfair was putting that kind of a road block at the end of the leg where everyone had to do it one at a time, making the last team to arrive at the Road Block essentially the one eliminated. They should have put either the Detour or better yet the ATV task at the end to give teams a chance to improve their ranking.

Particularly since such a penalty is meaningless anyway when the teams will probably get bunched within the first twenty minutes of next week's episode.

It was a non-elimination round, with Zabrina & Joe Jer coming in last. Next week, it looks like they go to the Philippines? It sure looks like it, with a task involving buko shelling, and--brace yourselves--another climbing task, in an area similar to the rock walls in Palawan used in the USA TAR when they came here.

I found it pretty weird. They went to Singapore basically to go to a CALTEX gas station and wash a FORD car, then they left. All within 10 minutes on-air.

The product placements are definitely a lot more intrusive than that Travelocity gnome on the US version.  ;D

incredibly.....boring.  :P

well at least i know now why the eliminated teams are in a half circle on the mat...no space  :P

About one week after the finalist teams were interviewed in KL (a month or so before they were actually announced), I came across Zabrina's blog. She actually sent in two applications, and it was obvious that she would've preferred her other potential teammate to Joe Jer. She was at a very low point in her life, and her blog entries were rather dreary and despondent.

I'm actually glad for her, since based on what was on that blog, she really needed a morale booster like this.
