That release of "The Perfect Catch" is funny. On the front cover, it says "The Perfect Catch." But if you read the back cover, it says "Fever Pitch."

I'm not sure. I didn't buy this pack since I already have the first film on R1. I'm almost sure the "Legend of Zorro" in the pack is the budget version, though, since the DVD9 version of this title hasn't been released in the country yet. It's logical to assume the "Mask of Zorro" in the box would also be the same, based on the price of the set.

I saw this at Astroplus SM North EDSA, and yes, the packaging pales in comparison with the R1 release. It also seems that there are lesser bonus features compared to the R1. Kaya, I doubt if this is a 2-disc set. Hindi rin alam ng Astro staff kung 1-disc or 2-disc set siya.
Buti na lang I opted to buy the R1 instead of waiting for the delayed R3 release (Thanks again, Sir Emil! ;)).

I just picked up my copy from... Astro V-Mall. You must've missed it by a few hours. Not sure, but allegedly, it's Php 485 at Astro, and Php 550 at all other stores?

Would anyone know the difference between this and the 2-disc previously released by Viva? Are there any new special features in this 40th Anniversary Edition?

I looked for this today at Astro but couldn't find it.
If it's the same as the R1 40th Anniversary edition, then it has all-new documentaries - Julie Andrews & Christopher Plummer: A Reminiscence, From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion, When You Know the Notes to Sing: A Sing-Along Phenomenon, Mia Farrow screen test, A Few of My Favorite Things: A retrospective documentary, a new commentary track with cast, choreographer and an actual Von Trapp, and more.
I think the documentary special features from the old set (Salzberg: Sight and Sound, The Sound of Music: From Fact to Phenomenon) all didn't make it to this new release.
Hopefully someone who's seen this in stores can confirm if the R3 is the same as the R1.

I saw the Simpsons DVD yesterday at SM Deptstore Makati and Astrovision, It was actually priced at 250 or 299? not quite sure now but it was definitely 199. Misprice kaya ito?
At the shop where I saw it, the computer said it was 250, but the VIVA representative said 199 na lang daw. To answer aoshi900's question, I think this is VHS-quality, at best. It's apparently a VIVA DVD-5 release, with so many episodes. Not sure how many discs are in what looked like a single-DVD case.

It depends what you're looking for, crazyguyallert. If you're looking for good quality, full-featured discs, then YES. If you're one of those who cares A LOT about packaging and slipcases, then... think twice before taking the plunge.
For me, Php 895 with a FREE DVD for the R3 vs. $19.98 + shipping and no free DVD = screw the packaging, I want my R3 Kong! ;D

It's a Magnavision release. There are two versions of Jarhead in the market:
Php 895: Jarhead 2-Disc Edition
Php 650: Jarhead Single Disc Edition
From what I remember, the contents of Disc Two are the same as Disc 2 of the out-of-print Region 1 Collector's Edition.
However... although the printing of the cover art is good... naka-tapal lang yung list of Special Features on the 2-Disc Edition. ::)

Actually, it's even a little bit worse than that. The covers are actually different - if you look at Fun With Dick & Jane, the special features listed on the BUDGET edition are in actually in fuller detail - but are NOT on the discs themselves.
Same thing for Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. The DVD9 version has "Assume the Position" Edition on the front cover, while the budget version does not. On the back of the cover, both list all the same special features, but these are absent from the budget disc when you play it.
On other titles, like The Legend of Zorro and Jarhead, although the covers are the same, there's a piece of paper glued over the special features of the budget edition, with the lesser contents printed on it. Ugly to look at, but at least not misleading.
The worst case I've seen is Closer, where the budget edition's cover actually has MORE special features listed than the more expensive DVD9 version. ;D

If somebody bought these low-priced versions, you could theoretically return it because it is false advertising... and if enough people do, it would make Magnavision situp and take notice...
Why would they do that (laziness? Or really trying to lure people into buying products based on features it doesn't have?), redesigning cases is not too hard, in fact, all it need top do is cover the 'special features' section with a DVD or even Magnavision logo, and that's it.

If you liked fairy tales when you were a kid, you'll supposedly like this. It has I think a girl and her father trapped in a "twilight zone" type of area, where there are 9 Kingdoms - each kingdom inhabited by fairy tale characters you're familiar with - Snow White, Red Riding Hood, etc.
By the way, this was before "Shrek." ;)
My problem with this release, though, is that the R1 is only $9.99.

I'm curious, allert - why do you consider a DVD that comes with audio commentary, retrospective documentary, classic newsreels, a vintage short film and two trailers as "barebones"?
I'm really curious, since I consider "Seven Brides..." as one of the better feature-laden Warner classic musical releases. The single-disc "An American in Paris" is what I consider a barebones release.

Here's something interesting:
Spotted on Astroplus Makati: Grey's Anatomy Season 1 (released by Viva), retailing for P900.
2 discs; contents (as printed at the back) seems similar to the R1 (5 episodes on 1st disc and 4 episodes on the 2nd). It has a DTS logo on the front cover, yet the R1 has only Dolby Digital. Back cover says it is DVD9 dual layer, but until someone buys and confirms it here in this thread, we should be wary of misleading info on the cover.

Munich is a Magnavision release, I hope they will release the DVD as a two-disc set, since these types of story based on history really benefits from special features to separate what are history and what are the liberties taken to make the story more film-friendly. ...are all part of the same thing. If you're looking for bonus material about the movie itself, I'd say it's less than 10 minutes worth. The rest, as you can see, are about Jonathan Larson's life and the stage version of the film.
As for the budget edition, it PROBABLY won't have the deleted scenes despite their being listed in the back, as this has been the case for most of the other budget titles. What I'd do is show the salesperson what's listed on the back and tell her I'm buying the disc for these features, then open it and test it to check. They can't force you to buy it if it doesn't contain what it's supposed to.

I didn't know that, my R1 copy is still sealed...so I thought the two versions are on separate disc as is often the case. :)

Where is it available?
I already saw RENT (both P475 and P895) on display at Astro V-Mall in Greenhills. Both versions both cite the following special features: deleted scenes, commentaries and trailer. I assume the P475 is a DVD5 disc while the P895 is DVD9 (imported DVD daw). For the budget 1-disc DVD5 to be priced at P475, I find this too expensive. For this price, dapat man lang nag 2 discs ang Magnavision na release na ito. Same goes for the the P895 version.
I gather that you are a musical film collector. If I were you, I would just get the R1 version since the second disc in the R1 version contains a documentary on the life of Jonathan Larson, as well as the development of the musical. In addition, the cover of the R3 version is really crappy -- malayo sa kulay ng R1 version.

I believe Just Like Heaven and Munich are Universal Studios / Dreamworks releases, and thus Magna doesn't release budget editions for films from that studio. Only with Sony. And possibly MGM, in the near future.

I just bought these three on R1 for almost double their R3 prices, all for the sake of "completion," since they're all pretty bad. :-\
Looks like Sony Pictures Entertainment titles are back to being released in a timely fashion locally. So now it's both Warner and Sony R1's that I'll be more careful about buying.

It was Php 900 at SM Manila... but as with some Viva release, the price is sometime different among different video outlets. If it wasn't listed as copyright 2006, I would have presumed it was a restock (BTW: They restocked the original Princess Diaries for Php 550). I don't remember it being listed in 2006 thread, baka wala ring coverart, so it slipped my eye as I skimmed over the thread. ;) Oh well, no harm done except a few more bits and bytes for PinoyDVD servers.
At 250, I probably would have bought it...

you can get blade runner directors cut in astroplus in sm makati area at 275, I was almost ripped off (or naisahan, if you wanna call it that) in Astrovision in glorietta. They were quoting 499 but the warner saleslady there insisted it was 275. She even showed the counter lady the price list of warner. However it was not listed in their computer at 275. Good thing I did not buy it and went to Astroplus. It pays to go around. My question is isnt this standard pricing for the warners at 275 because I also noticed when I was in new virramall. in Astro there are some warners that are 275 and upstairs in oddysey its 499...hmm...makes me wonder one or two floors up with different pricing. I guess it depends on the store.

Blade Runner: I think the 275 was the first version (1998 or 2000 DVD release - also director's cut but not remastered). The new one is 499 and released only recently even in the US. Nakamali siguro ang taga-Astro...
275 price are for older Warner releases that had been gone through numerous price drop to reach it's present price point...

The Ratings Stickers on our local DVDs are completely USELESS and SENSELESS. They always have been, and probably always will be. And they really don't make a difference, since all shops still sell those with R-Rated stickers to customers under 18.

Probably. But really wished Magnavision can provide PinoyDVD.biz with these new releases as they hit the streets. So far Da Vinci Code pa lang ang huling umabot sa .biz, when at least half a dozen new titles are available at brick-and-mortar stores for at least a week or more...
Ang tagal ng Over The Hedge, so I got the R1 from the Marketplace na.

I always get the R1 versions of CGI films from Pixar and Dreamworks because I'm not satisfied with the packaging and contents of the local CGI movie releases from Viva and Magnavision. My only excetptions are the two Shreks (I already had these before I became a picky DVD collector, but I should say content-wise the local releases are alright) and Monster's Inc. (again I already had this before I became choosy, plus the R3 has a DTS track which the R1 lacks). But for the rest, R1 all. ;)
By the way, the local Over The Hedge release seems to mirror the R1. It includes the bonus Hammy animated short. In the local Madagascar release kasi, missing yung Penguins Christmas Caper short, which is one of the funniest animated shorts for me. The DVD case itself is good, unlike in the past na madaming creases. So, mukhang okay naman yung local release ng Over The Hedge.

I have the R1 and it doesn't have a DTS track. Did you see the specs from Amazon? I think it's wrong. Other sellers didn't indicate a DTS track for the R1.

The product specs for the R1 Over The Hedge has been updated in Amazon. It now doesn't include a DTS track, which is consistent with the actual product having none.

Really? Coz I researched the product details in so many websites at wala akong nakita kahit isa that indicates it has a DTS track (the R1). Even the R2 (which has 2-discs), wala din. Then again, I haven't played my R1 yet, so I don't know if there's a secret DTS track waiting to be found there. I just unsealed my copy last night to rip the Hammy cartoon short. But definitely, in the rear cover, walang naka-indicate na may DTS track siya.

My guess is this is one of those glorified VCD on DVD that Viva loves to put out. Sa mga nakabili, pakipost na lang kung this is local encoding (ie Viva logo, MTRCB warning, no subtitles whatsoever) or not...
Also seen plenty of restock for Mulan (Special Edition) and The Incredibles (2-discs) at Php 299 each.
But still no signs of the one I been waiting for (Cars, Ice Age 2, X-Men: The Last Stand). Why they would import older titles and sell at 299, when titles like Cars will sell for much higher is beyond me...

That's weird - the discount is bigger if you just buy Superman Returns than if you buy The Ultimate Edition? The Ultimate Edition comes with a Php 15 (VCD)/Php 25 (DVD) discount stub for The Ant Bully.

I asked Astroplus podium why the UE does not have the discount stub. Their warner rep said that it should have a stub. However, another one said that wala ngang stub yong UE kase nagbukas sila ng isang UE at wala ngang discount stub. The warner rep said na itatanong pa sa head office, I said ok. But eventually, binigyan ako ng discount stub bago ako nakaalis sa counter (syempre after showing my receipt). ;D

Maybe they are still trying to move the old stock and sell a few more UE/SR before they release the new versions. Simple business ploy.

I assume that Superman (4-disc Special edition) Php 1250 and Superman II (2-disc Special Edition) Php 499 are also available, though I only see the above two on display.
Update ko na lang later, once I saw the other two at offline retailers.

I was just wondering about these dvds with budget editions. Saw the 2 versions of Fun with Dick and Jane earlier and the budget one is slashed down from P475 to P350 while the P895 one was slashed down to P333. What gives??
