hi, I've read that most R3 titles are in DVD5, is this true? Which distributor releases the most
DVD9 titles locally? Which R3 titles are available ba locally? Thanks and Happy New Year.
-
Not really. Most Warner Bros. titles are DVD9, except those that fits on a DVD5 (ie short films, cartoons, educational videos). They are all imported.
Magnavision has both DVD9 and DVD5. For new releases, DVD9 are priced at 895 and DVD5 are priced at 475. Older titles are harder to differentiate. Most of those discounted to 375 and 333 titles are DVD9s. Those that sells for 295, 3-for-600 are DVD5. [Edited by moderator - Not anymore. See firewired's list of locally-pressed DVD9 titles from Magna below]
Viva (Fox and Disney) are mostly DVD9 except those new titles at sells at 375.
C Interactive titles are all DVD5.
Pilipino films can be DVD5 or DVD9. Many Star films are in DVD9. I am not sure about GMA films but Rizal is DVD9. Most Regal films are DVD5.

hi tnx for the info
-
DVD5 - Single Sided/Single Layer - This is the most common replicated DVD produced. A DVD5 will hold approx 4.7 GB data or 120 minutes of high quality audio and video. All DVDs contain two substrates that are bonded together. On a DVD5, one substrate contains the data on one layer and the other is a pitiless layer without any information. A DVD-R is suitable as a master for replication.
DVD9 - Single Sided/Dual Layer - This DVD format is increasing in popularity due to its ability to hold up to 4 hours of audio and video or 8.54 GB of data. It is a dual layer disc. A DLT is the only acceptable master for this type of DVD.

Also, by looking at the reflective layer portion of the disk, look at the inner ring near the center. A DVD-9 contains 2 separate numbered codes ending with A and B or 1 and 2 ata.

What are DVD-5 and DVD-9 discs? What do single layer and double layer mean? (http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=4928.0)

I just have a question, the discs of viva are those imported? or locally produced..Also the Magna 895 are they imported, and the 575 and 299 are local? Thanks
-
Moks007, refer to my post above.
In addition, Viva discs at 120-199 and new releases at 375 are local DVD5 with locally authored content (ie Viva logo, Videogram warning , and often without subtitles).
Magnavision's 575 seems to be a new breed, according to the Casino Royale thread is locally manufactured DVD9, with additional local ad inserted. So far, few new Magna releases are released at this price point...don't know if the others are also local DVD9, maybe owners of one disc MI:III and Fast and Furious:Tokyo Drift can reply. But I feel Casino Royale might be the first local DVD9 from Magnavision. Whether future 575 releases will be local DVD9s is unknown (yet)...
All this is as of now, as distributor can switch DVD manufacturers at their option...

Casino Royale is not the first local DVD9 from Magnavision.. Those budget DVD9 titles given for free when you purchase the 2-Disc Casino Royale DVD are locally manufactured DVD9s.. These are 1-disc versions of the usual 2-disc releases.. Titles include Broken Trail, Memoirs of a Geisha and The Da Vinci Code..
-
I almost always buys the 2-disc version of releases with one and two discs versions, so I am not sure - after all, I qualified my statement with 'might'... :)
If I may ask, are the budget DVD of those releases (ie Broken Trail) DVD9s?

I highlighted that part of your reply, sir techdude, because that was the focus of my reply.. My intention was not to correct you or imply that you were mistaken.. And I did take into consideration the uncertainty you implied in your statement when I made my reply.. ;)
As for your query, yes, the budget releases of Broken Trail, Memoirs of a Geisha and The Da Vinci Code are DVD9s.. The copies I had were DVD9s, only, they were locally manufactured..
-
To techdude's rather accurate tell-tale signs listed above, I'd like to add:
An older Universal title re-released by Magnavision at Php 350 with new cover art is usually a DVD-9.

3-for-600 are DVD5? Does this mean "El Crimen del Padre Amaro" is a DVD5?

just wanted to be sure...I purchased 2 titles at the Trinoma sale..."Into the Wild" at 175 and "Spiderwick" at 375...are they DVD9's?

Yes.

C Interactive titles are all DVD5.
But aren't the newer C-Interactive titles, with the gold Imported sticker and the conscpicuous DVD9 logo, DVD9?
-
Yes. Unless there's a misprint. I think there's a complaint somewhere in the C Interactive thread that a DVD with DVD9 logo is actually DVD5, but only in that one instance.
Most DVD9s have two barcodes in the inner rim region of the disc. That's the easiest way to determine whether it is DVD5 or DVD9. The other way is, of course, to put it in your computer to determine it's size.
To recap, as of August 2008:
Magnavision: Mostly DVD9 releases, no matter imported or locally pressed, unless the master fits on a DVD5.
Warner: All Imported. Mostly DVD9s unless film is short, then it's DVD5.
Viva: Fox and Disney, mostly imported DVD9. New releases at 375 mostly full-frame DVD5 (be warned!)
Star: New releases on DVD9. I do not have many Star releases to say for sure.
C Interactive: Most new releases on DVD9, they are indicated on label. Old releases - still DVD5 , but mostly good compression and looks good on 32" or smaller screen. Some older DVD5 titles (notably A Walk to Remember) is problematic and num, erous reports of skipping video.
Solar: DVD5. Some titles like Dan in Real Life and TMNT (Full frame!) have good video, as they seem to rip out the extras but retain the video quality. Not sure about others.
Paragon: DVD5. Their video compression from DVD9 source (of imported titles) is horrendous, I bought Ten Commandment - The Musical and Camp and both are near VCD quality, pixelations everywhere even on a small screen. Beware. I have avoided any of their newer releases so I can't tell. Local Paragon titles are okay na rin, because most local films are not digitally remastered, so it's better to have them on disc than to lose them forever...
Regal: Mostly DVD5 yata. Have not bought any new Regal releases to know if they moved up to DVD9s...

thanks for the update, techdude... :)

aha! im learning. thanks sa inyong lahat. :)

[post deleted by moderator. that's a pirated disc you're talking about, that's not a real DVD-9 you got at the pier for that price.]

I am still confused sa mga release ng magnavision. Some of their bargain sales 100 below are still on a dvd 5 disc. (sample na lang nung universal soldier at universal soldier the return that I bought)
Cguro if they will sell that for the 299 range, will definetely bring that back to the shop that i bought pero since 99.50 each, pwede na pag tyagaan.

I just bought S.W.A.T. DVD for P150 on sale in Astrovistion. It was released by Magnavision, and is DVD5. The packaging was beautiful, and even came in an impressive box. At the back, it said "anamorphic widescreen", Dolby Digital 5.1, and several special features like deleted scenes, trailers. I thought to myself, this must be DVD9. No way they can fit all of that in DVD5, right? Unfortunately, it was a DVD5 disc.
The movie itself, thankfully, was watchable. I'd give the video a 6.5/10 for quality. In my 32" screen, it was definitely not as sharp as a DVD9 disc.
The soundtrack was indeed 5.1 but sounded very compressed, like a 128kbps MP3. I'm no audiophile but could compare with other DVD's with DD 5.1. It sounded like "night mode" was turned on in my player, even if it's not.
The menu looks horrible. Literally VCD quality, with super blocky / pixellated pictures and washed out colors.
Lesson learned: unless the label specifically says DVD9 or "dual layer", you can't really make assumptions. Even at the sale price, I felt disappointed.

karamihan nung titles na kasama sa B1T1 for 150/300 ay yung mga unang releases pa ng Magna ng mga locally-pressed titles so most probably dvd5 yung titles.
yung mga old titles na may slipcases na ngayon ay repackaged old titles lang. inuubos na lang nila stocks nila that's why they're (almost) going all the way with these sales. but these are just hunches on my part. maybe the magna rep here in pdvd can verify these para malinaw na sa lahat at hindi masayang yung pera natin.
notable exceptions are yung kasama sa sale na may nakalagay na "Imported" stickers (unless yun mismong imported copy was originally released in dvd5, which is rare).

Don't count on it. He almost always ignores questions and only comes out whenever they're promoting something new.

He's the reason I've mostly stopped contributing to the DVD Release update thread. Why promote something for a company with a rep who doesn't even TRY to pretend he cares about your questions and concerns? Buti pa si Lester of C-Interactive, and the Warner rep BEFORE the Magna takeover. You guys rarely heard from the Warner guy, but most of the time, he'd PM firewired with replies to your inquiries, which enabled us to answer them on these boards.

It really depends... If you read many of the Qs and comments, sometimes it would infuriates the rep (ie why are this-and-that so expensive, the Distributor is a business and it will charge the highest it can get away with, that is capitalism). And sometimes, there are comments which are written like a demand letter (ie why no reply?). If I were a rep of the company, I would read those comments, and get irritated and eventually pass, maybe why Magna's rep are not as active as before. Even Lester seems to come once in awhile now, instead of everyday.
There's always two sides of a coin, I am not connected with any distro, but trying to see from the businessman point-of-view. This make an interesting thread by itself, so maybe it could be disassociated from this thread, as we are obviously off topic.
As for advertising for distributors, I don't care about them, it just to serve other forumers, even though sometimes, like those reps, I could get irritated by Q and comments from forumers who acted like you owe them. Sometimes, you really think hard whether it's worth the effort...
One more thing... Despite PinoyDVD forumers being a noisy lot, I believe it is just a small portion of the distro business, PinoyDVD forumers are too knowledgeable, and they often buy R1 instead of R3s. A lot also use the forum to comment but buy 'pirated' discs or download them. So it may come down to a case of Work VS Reward, if the distro's rep feels the effort are not worth it, they would care less...

to paraphrase Fat Makoy's remarks in this thread way back 2008, I'm sure learning a lot! relatively newbie din ako dito (started Dec. 2009) and before that didn't know squat about this (expensive!) hobby (R1, R3, DVD5, DVD9 etc.) Ngayon medyo di na ako maloloko hehehe... (sorry intro lang, first post na non-marketplace hehe.) ;D
Sir Techdude (or the other gurus here), am I correct in assuming that those 99 peso DVDs from Paragon of old 80's movies na nakikita ko sa Astro are those you mentioned before which are to be avoided like the plague? May mga 80's movies that I would like to revisit or watch (nostalgia reasons or haven't watched them yet hehe) like "Black Moon Rising" or "Philadephia Experiment" na Paragon na 99 pesos lang. :P

It boils down to how much you like the movie and how much of a collector you are. Those Paragon discs are DVD5s, and picture quality is less than perfect, I encountered a couple where it's VCD quality or worse (Look at the separate Paragon thread). I had avoided their releases since then, although I really doubt their quality had improved.
Back to your Q, as you said its 99 only, and if you had the cash to spare, and just want to relive the 80s moment, then you may be satisfied with the tradeoff (especially if you are viewing it on a small screen). Just be sure that it is the same movie, kasi with another distributor (Ivory), they are releasing B-movies with same titles as Hollywood productions, so you might be gypped. Just set your expectation low, and consider the 99 an expense, then you might not be disappointed...
There are Paragon releases (especially their local movies/TV series) which might be worth owning, since it's the only way to get them, low Picture quality not withstanding...
If you take the plunge, get it one at a time, then report back so that others may be warned (or not)...
-
hmm oo nga sir. thanks for the nice perspective. I'll try to buy one if I pass by Astro again when I have the chance. At the very least, para ma-warn yung mga ibang members, though as you said, I'll try not set my expectations too high (packaging pa nga lang, medyo mag-iisip ka na, kahit 99 pesos sya hehe.)
-
Update: recently bought the Black Moon Rising and Philadelphia Experiment Paragon DVDs at buy 1 take 1 for 125 (hehehe presyong Jack sparrow) kasi napadaan sa festi astro. As expected, the titles were non-widescreen and stereo sound only. :P Pero ok na rin for the price. Just wanted to watch the movies anyway. ;D
