was in greenhills this afternoon and saw a tube multimedia speaker system
was hooked onto a PC but was told it also comes with an ipod dock
its a sonic gear i-steroid and costs just upwards of P3K..saw it in a uk site selling for £106.80
intriguing but for the price doesnt look hopeful...anybody auditioned it yet?

Sometimes price of a gadget can be deceiving. Take the T-amp for example. Moreover, since it comes from Singapore (or Indonesia) , it will be naturally cheaper here in the Philippines (transpo and tariff agreements) than in the US and UK.
For the price, how can you go wrong? :) Go for it! ;D
Which shop in GH? Would you know if they carry other Sonic Gear Products? Type ko yung VAL (AM/FM Valve based, retro looking) radio nila. Perfect gift yan sa parents ko who listen to AM balita over breakfast. :)
-
sir where did you see this product being sold in greenhills? if it indeed comes with a dock and remote as shown then for Php3K plus this is a steal.
-
its 7.5k in digital walker here if i'm not mistaken
-
saw it in one of the computer shops in the third floor of virra mall. the quoted price is P3,300. yes it has a dock and remote.

Not to be a spoilsport, but if you're looking for a great computer or multimedia speaker, you might as well audition the Klipsch Promedia GMX. It can be found at Spectra (Park Square 1, beside Phasetron) or at Rising Sun Computers (along Shaw, just after the flyover coming from the Shangrila side).
IMHO, listening to the GMX, this is one MM speaker that can actually go head to head with some budget floorstanders and bookshelves. I bought one for my office desk, since I was endlessly looking for speakers which could at least come close to my car and home setup. I'm pretty sure it will beat the iSteriod hands down.
Listen to it at Spectra (P7k, 6 or 12 months 0% interest) or at Rising Sun (P5.9k, cash).
-
agree ako diyan, pero the usual disclamer applies... audition. :D

sir muypogi, tnx for the suggestion...
but medyo out of the budget ang 6k. i was hoping as the thread starter posted- the isteroid costs 3k+ lang daw.
also, my curiousity and interest was tickled by the s.g. isteroid because of its use of a vacuum tube. mind you, this doesnt guarantee that it will sound good but i think its worth taking a good look n see wth this new stuff has to offer. (i also have a tube thats equivalent to what the isteroid uses)
lastly, though i intend to use the isteroid with my pc and later, hopefully with an ipod, i'm also keeping my fingers crossed that it might have a potential to be used in a home audio setup just like the sonic impact t-amp. change the tube, connect to a cd player and if possible use with a tube preamp and an efficient bookshelf speaker.
as to beating the klipsch handsdown, im not sure about it. whats more impt to me is that i enjoy a certain audio component and let the experts do the head-to-head comparisons with other gears ;D

A 6N2 or 6922 has a plate dissipation of 1.5 watts either plate of 2 watts both plates (1 watt / plate) so it will not be possible to drive those speakers in a spud amp configuration - it won't even put out half a watt. Having said that, this product is a hybrid, possibly having a cheap chip amp (dami nyan sa Guadalupe or Raon selling for hundreds of Pesos lang) to drive the speakers and 1/2 of the 6N2 to provide the marketing come-on.
-
most likely, the 6922 is used as a buffer for a chipamp, say LM1875.... ;D

Wasn't planning to update this thread, but as I was wandering in V-Mall in Greenhills I came across the higher-end iSteriod (P4.5k) in a shop. So, being a dutiful list member, and since I happened to have my iPod around, I auditioned it.
My general observations:
1) IN general, the unit sounds like a pretty decent computer speaker. Whether the tube made any difference, I could not hear it. I think that the observations of it being mainly a chip amp is correct.
2) The low frequencies seem to be coming from a ported enclosure, which contains the volume and bass controls, as well as the amp and tube. The satellites are full range drivers, with a port that's molded to look like a tweeter assembly.
3) Using an Ipod, I had to max out the bass control to get any thumping bass with the unit.
4) As I said, the sound is like a fairly decent 2.1 computer speaker setup. I listened to an entire shelf of computer speakers in Octagon Superstore in Megamall, and the iSteriod is pretty good when compared to those. Those looking to buy 2.1 computer speakers would do well to buy these.
But are they "tubey"? In a word, nope. Even if it uses the exposed tube like an x-10d, the sound is still predominantly computer-speakerish, for lack of a better way to describe it. I would doubt that changing the tube would improve the sound. But that's just me.
After that, I concluded that I would pay the extra P1.5k for the Klipsch GMX 2.1 system (which I have), since the sound is far superior.
One setup I'm curious about is the Fatman tube amp + ipod dock. That contraption was highly rated by WhatHIFI, and is on display in the Powermac center in Greenbelt 4. Anybody want to audition it?
-
meron din Fatman at golden sound 3rd/f v-mall greenhills.
-
mag-improve kaya w/ tube-roll - change 6n1p to 6dj8?
only way to find out is........wait lang (teka-teka muna) ;D
