Yes, I agree - PQ is great! I was expecting a lot of "grain" (based on what I've seen on the trailers before) but the HD DVD version did not dissappoint! This is my cheapest HD DVD combo at 19bucks as well!

Ya I wanna get this but im waiting few weeks after release to see if there will be problems with addon like children of men. Its such a inconvenience to return when in the Philippines, unlike in america..hehe..

'Ultimate Matrix Collection' HD DVD Reviewed

It's the most anticipated HD DVD release to date, but does Warner's 'Ultimate Matrix Collection' live up to the lofty expectations of high-def enthusiasts?

Our own Peter Bracke has just finished watching the 40+ hours worth of content on the landmark HD DVD release, and he reports that fans won't be disappointed. In his just-posted review, Peter gives the video and the audio a perfect score of five stars, saying that both are a huge step up compared to the standard-def versions of all three Matrix films -- and that both visually and aurally, this HD DVD release compares favorably to anything he's seen yet on either high-def format.

Meanwhile, he reports that the long list of supplemental materials included on 'The Ultimate Collection' simply boggles the mind. Although he was disappointed that all of the extras are presented in standard-def video, he did appreciate the newly-produced exclusive In-Movie Experience video commentaries for each flick, which at least provide for a concise "best of" version of the extras, overlayed on full 1080p video.

The HD DVD exclusive 'Ultimate Matrix Collection' hits stores alongside its slimmed-down counterpart 'The Complete Matrix Trilogy' (review also live here) next Tuesday, May 22. In what's shaping up to be a high-def battle of the titans, that same day will also see the Blu-ray exclusive release of Disney's two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' flicks, 'Curse of the Black Pearl' and 'Dead Man's Chest.' Look for our reviews of both 'Pirates' flicks in the coming days...

^ Its a given that most of the extras were not shot in high def, it is sad that the animatrix wasnt encoded in hd (the last flight of the osiris at least). Still the IME is something to look forward too 8)

Its a disgrace those SF's are not in HD!!!  ::) ::)




NOT!!!!!    (just playin....heheheh)    Im just happy to watch the main feature now.   It would have been great to see the extras in HD, but it doesnt take off the luster of that review.

I remember someone posting in the other forum about the Blood Diamond release that interactivity and HD extras arent that important.    And now with Matrix HD DVD's release with non-HD featurettes.....they seem to point that out and think its now important.

At least HD DVD fans dont have to wait for their format of choice to fix their BD-J problems.

hmm..getting depressed here. All the catalog releases that I want have below 4 star pq. Midnight run, dragonheart, frighteners. Good thing trading places is 4star I think. Hopefully coming to america is at least 4 star. I trust this guys rating (almost 70 to 80 percent) bec before I dont even check out his ratings when I buy and a couple of titles Ive watched have no wow factor like the others. When I check his rating, indeed its 3 to 3 1/2 stars. I think anything below 4star is just a little step up from dvd.

grabe universal is only  exclusive studio support for hddvd and most, I can say all of their recent releases suck on PQ, It may be they are just getting these out just for the hell of it because they will give up soon. They deserve it. The way they are going hddvd deserve to lose. Im frustrated na, If older movies like the ones released by warner and paramount can have great transfers I dont know why universal cant do this.  Isnt there a new shakeup in universal. Well hopefully they all get fired. I dont know maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed but im fuming mad... >:( >:( >:(

It's really pointless releasing catalog movies blindly for the sake of increasing the HD DVD tittles.  :-\

Presented in 1080p using the VC-1 codec, this is unfortunately another in a series of sub-par transfers from Universal. Even with the subpar pq, I will still buy universal titles,  namely bourne Identity, Shaun of the dead, Dragonheart, Bruce almighty, Liar Liar, Midnight run, Frighteners, Mallrats and 40 yr old virgin..The Game (maybe)

I really wish the pq is at least 4 star, but I guess cant have everything 4 to 5 star. the great thing (which I think is a blessing in disguise) is I dont have any of these in SD. I love these movies and to me a must have.

What an unfortunate surprise. 'Top Gun' hit standard-def DVD few years back as a full-on special edition, complete with audio commentary and a two-hour documentary boasting a rare retrospective interview with Tom Cruise. So why Paramount has decided to not include a single extra -- not even a trailer -- on the film's high-def debut is a head-scratcher. In the past they've been a studio that has almost unilaterally supported extensive supplements on high-def, so I can only that 'Top Gun' is an anomaly and not indicative of some larger change in policy for the new HD DVD-exclusive Paramount. I actually enjoyed watching Stardust at the theater, which was surprising since I wasn't expecting much. Sucks that the reviewer didn't like it and that according to them the PQ and AQ isn't that great. I was actually considering getting this. :-\

For purist, there's only one edition to go: Blade Runner Ultimate Collector's Ed. The brief case does look cool. :D 

As I'm not a big fan but do enjoy the film, guess the Complete Collector's Edition will do. :)

Just watched this and I have to say its totally awesome. I have to say this and zodiac are the best hddvds I own for PQ and story. It really looks and sound perfect. It is worth every dollar.. :)

Sure buddy, am rackin' up the popular ones.  I take it you're an HDDVD aficionado.  Am format neutral so have a couple of RED titles on my rack as well.  I really started out Blu, but midway through, just had to grab the Transformers in HD so went neutral.  Unfortunately, the after-effects of the Red camp's demise has led the the cease of production across studios as you may well know. 

As a result, even the reviews of the new releases in High Def Digest has literally ground down to a halt.  Am just surfing other sites which have RED titles which haven't been posted before just to keep this RED thread going.  Of course, the Bluray reviews have been outpacing this thread but I still feel the quality of HDDVD is awesome! Personally, will still continue to collect...  ;)

For all those tryin to keep the HDDVD collectibles, will re-list down the top 10 which made their 'DVD Talk Collectors Series.'  If you're trying to sort through your red titles to shed off some titles, these are the keepers.  ;)

A caveat though, these are not necessarily the best in PQ and AQ but the best scored overall with all the other aspects considered like Content, Extras, Replay value etc.  And this is the ranking of DVD Talk only.  Will try to do HDD's ranking some other time. ;)
