Title: PinoyDVD TweakTV MySettings
Post by: ericag_ph on May 19, 2007 at 06:30 AM
I thought I'd share my TV settings (managed to use Avia calibration disc)

Ambient light during testing = dark.
Energy Saving during testing = 0ff.
LCD TV = Samsung LA40R71B

Mode = Custom
Contrast = 70
Brightness = 58
Sharpness = 15
Colour = 50  (best guess, since I don't have the filters)  ;D
Colour Tone = Normal

where did you get the avia disc? been looking around for this. do you have the color plate accessory also?

I downloaded it  ;D  all 4+GB of it...took 3 days.
I wasn't sure if it was that useful...considering it sells for $40 at amazon.com

I don't have the filters, or color plates stuff...that's why I set color = 50...
mathematically, that's your best best.  ;D  It looks ok at 50 anyway.

Bottom line, Avia is ok if you are new to HT...lot's of HT related info on the disc.
But the calibration menu is the only thing I found useful...not worth the $40 in my books.

I should add something... the settings below look great when viewing DVDs from a DVD player...but
when the video source is from a PC..it's a little too dark...and I would prefer "Standard" rather than "Custom".
I have no idea if the settings would look great with cable TV...as the TV is not connected to a cable source.

you could try the various settings for different sources posted here as baseline for your R81

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=513376 (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=513376)

R88 (for UK) is the same as R81.

i think the reason why some settings are a bit dark is because they are calibrated in dark rooms or at least with little ambient light.
i too thought the settings was a bit dark for me till my eyes got adjusted.

although in some calibration tests, you still need the blue filter that comes with the purchased disk.
Title: Re: PinoyDVD TweakTV MySettings

That's true, but in my case I set the TV parameter to 50 out of 100 when the blue filter was required.
Mathematically, that's your best bet.  Your eyes can also compensate for the lack of the blue filter for that particular test.  I didn't think it was worth the $40.

also...does anyone have a list of what the features do? dnle, hdmi black, black adjust, etc? any listing on what these actually do to PQ?

also, i noticed that 16:9 has smaller black bars than just scan mode when using my pio dv400 via hdmi with a widescreen dvd. can someone tell me which is better than the 2 in terms of a closer 1:1 pixel mapping? also noticed that the just scan mode leaves a black space of maybe 10 pixels on the left side and on the top using a pal 16:9 concert dvd i just bought.

hi guys just got a new r81 .. question i have a PS3 and a 360 connected to my R81 ... is there a setting where you can change the setting for PS3 (HDMI) and the setting naman for the 360 (component) ... yung guide sa avsforums kasi different and setting pag PS3 and 360.

Title: Re: PinoyDVD TweakTV MySettings
Post by: antikryst on Sep 24, 2007 at 04:25 PM
hey yakisoba!

yes settings per input gets saved. so your settings for the 360 can be different from your ps3 and dvd player and tv. as long as they are on different inputs this can be done..just tweak and go.

btw..are you the same yakisoba on the pxb forums? :) congrats on your new lcd tv. i can share you my 360 settings if you want. its almost the same as the one above but i tweaked it a little as it was too dark in some games like GOW and R6V

yup this is yakisoba sa pinoyxbox thanks thanks .. i adjusted my 360 setting to the link na binigay sa avforums  ;D
Title: Re: PinoyDVD TweakTV MySettings
Post by: antikryst on Sep 25, 2007 at 11:33 AM
yakisoba:

i think i bumped the brightness a bit...3-5 notches up.

black adjust to medium
dynamic contrast to medium
backlight to 8

apart from these...i used the exact same settings. still look good for watching HD movie content (downloaded via torrents) and gave more detail to dark games like R6V and GOW. i had to adjust the ingame brightness on R6V a bit though. also adjusted the ingame brightness in bioshock. these settings were the best compromise for movies and games.

hope this helps.

Question lang...I am using an R71 and tried using the settings in the link above.
When I got in the Service Menu and started tweaking...I noticed that the numbers indicated are way off..

Example:
R/G/B Offset (for DVD Upscaling Settings)
The orginal setting in my R71 is around 127-131 and the link suggests that I lower it to 15.
Did that and it was really really dark...near to "I can't see anything".

Mode : Standard  --> did this
Contrast : 85 --> did this
Brightness : 53 --> did this
Sharpness : 25 --> did this
Colour : 35 --> did this
Tint : 50/50 --> did this
Colour Tone : Normal --> did this
Backlight : 10 --> can't see the option for this
Digital NR : Off (removed image retention) --> did this
DNIe : On --> did this
Movie Plus : Off --> no opton for this
Black Adjust : High --> no option for this
Dynamic Contrast : Off --> did this
Gamma : +1 --> no option
R Offset : 15 --> did 115 instead
G Offset : 15 --> did 115 instead
B Offset : 15 --> did 115 instead
R Gain : 4 --> did 104 instead
G Gain : 15 --> did 115 instead
B Gain : 18 --> did 118 instead
Pink : 12 --> no option
Green : 11 --> no option
Blue : 11 --> no option
White : 14 --> no option
Edge Enhancement : On --> no option
Colour Space : Auto --> no option

Did I do it correctly? Or it was supposed to be 100 + 15 (115)??

But I noticed a lot of improvement in the PQ of my Sammy LCD.
But I think there are a lot of tweaks that I can do and I don't know where to start.

I have an Lx70 and there is not much difference between the two models. My advice is for you to have a "burn-in" period first of about 100 hours. Then, have your LCD calibrated for the settings that will appeal to you. S&S calibrates for free just in case you bought your unit from them.

Title: Re: AVIA SETTING FOR TOSHIBA
Post by: streetsmart on Apr 12, 2008 at 11:48 AM
The settings of AVIA are unique for each particular TV. Even if 2 units are exactly the same brand and model, they need to be independently calibrated. Furthermore, after a few months, the calibration has to be repeated.

In other words, you can't just borrow the AVIA settings of other people, even if they have exactly the same brand and model.

There are some DVD's which have a THX calibration procedure included in the menu. That can substitute for AVIA.

Sorry. Difficult to find Avia or Video Essentials locally. You can buy from Amazon for sure.

Re the THX discs, I have seen this feature on at least 2 discs, but both of them were purchased in the US. ONe of them was Moulin Rouge. D ko na maalala the other one. D pa ako nakakita ng ganitong feature sa locally-purchased DVD's. Maybe some other member knows.

Toshiba is a very good unit. Got the 32 and 37inch models of the CV500, I like the pre-set values already. Have your unit color calibrated it's a free service from SnS, you'll get better settings from there.

But if anyone wishes to share their own settings please do so.

Thanks,

POST UPDATE:
One more plus factor for the CV500 is the way it displays "film grain" on Blu-Ray and DVD. Film grain is intentionally added to give you that movie like feel from your current media at home. Unlike other LCD's I've tried, the Toshiba's display softens film grain to a point that it's still there, but it's very very subtle. (note: this was tested at dynamic mode)

A very good example would be the Kingdom of Heaven - Blu-Ray, at chapter 35 called "power", on a Panasonic unit we found the grain too "noisy", but on a CV500 it was displayed in a very smooth way. Check the thread made by my sister:

http://pinoydvd.com/board/index.php?topic=83315.0

Well to each his own, but for me, I like vibrant colors that are clean, accurate, soft and pleasing (not torching) to the eye and Toshiba delivers this kind of picture.

I got my 37CV500 from Vic at Sight and Sounds as well.

So far the unit is good naman. Although I use it mostly for cable, picture quality naman is pretty good. Since I'm on dream cable, their box had composite and s-video output. I tried both and there is no difference in picture quality. Recently I saw the Singapore F1 and the picture was very nice.

The sound is awesome. I turn on the SRSWoW feature and its fantastic, even on cable movies. The TV is currently on its factory setting and for day shots, the pictures are clean and crisp but for darker shots, i think I have to fine tune it pa.

DVD is a lot better. Using the component connection, very clear and crisp ang pictures even on day or night shot.  I'm just having a hard time selecting picture size I should be using, Wide, Cinema1 or Cinema2.

Now, I'm just waiting for HDTV and cheaper Blu-ray DVD players.  ;)

I'm not sure where I should be posting this but what settings are the best for an Samsung A450 LCD in the ff scenarios:

1.)Panasonic DVD Player via Component cables (it appears grainy when playing original / PDVDs)
2.)PS2 via Component Cables (appears grainy when playing)
3.)Xtreme HDMI DVD Player through HDMI (best settings for playing DivX movies via USB flash disk or DVDs)

Thanks!!! ;)

Medyo OT:
im planning on getting one of the following:

Samsung 32A650 - Parang bitin ang size. pero full HD na.
Samsung 37A450 - Sakto ang size, pero hindi full HD :(
Samsung 40A550 - Ok lang ang size, pero parang alanganin ang design (masyadong wide)
Samsung 40A650 - Ok lang ang size, price medyo mahal :(

Malaki kaya difference kung hindi full HT ang makukuha ko? hmm.... ???

Hello sir!

If you're watching movies, the difference between HD Ready and Full HD won't be noticeable, if your screen size is bellow 40 inches. But if you're playing video games there is a slight noticeable difference between them even at 32 inches. However, you really have to sit close to the screen to actually see it^^

Ryan Amontos

There is a side panel on the CV for 1 more HDMI port/Svideo and Composite. I think the CV is HD ready while the AV is not. Also there is an ambient light sensor in front of the CV.

Hi PDVDers,

Just thinking if it would be possible to setup a configuration database similar to TweakTV's?

This would be very helpful to fellow PDVDers in calibrating their sets for optimal performance.  :)

Calling all to share their config setup!  :D

Attn Teams SnS/TW:  You may want to share config of the various sets you have already calibrated!  :D

Enjoy!

Tweak My TV
Welcome to the core of Tweak MY TV, a data base of User Menu settings for your digital HDMI input for cable or satellite video sources. Our recommended settings, based on the data collected in the field by our technicians performing professional calibrations, are designed to improve your HDTV's manufacturer-factory preset settings and give you enhanced picture performance. THIS IS IN NO WAY THE EQUAL OF AN ACTUAL PROFESSIONAL CALIBRATION AND IS ALSO NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE AN IN-HOME PROFESSIONAL CALIBRATION. We do not claim that our recommended settings are necessarily the ideal settings for all of the sets of a particular brand and model. Differences in parts in the manufacturing process, and more importantly differences in the components and cabling in a given video system are all factors that affect the optimum settings for a particular HDTV.

My new settings:

TV: Panasonic Viera 50C10
DVD Player: Pioneer DV-410V @ 1080p HDMI; Firmware: YJB8507B

TV Picture Settings:

Viewing Mode ..... Cinema
Contrast ..... 50
Brightness ..... 0
Colour ..... 36
Sharpness ..... 75
Tint ..... 0
Colour Balance ..... Normal
Colour Management ..... Off
x.v. Colour ..... Off
P-NR ..... Off

Player settings:

Sharpness .....  Fine
Gamma .....  -1

===================================

I reduced contrast on the TV from 65 to 50.

On newer DVDs, 50 contrast looks ok, but 65 contrast gives the picture some extra "pop", while maintaining a natural look.  But on some older DVDs, 65 contrast makes bright areas too bright, giving the picture a fake look.

I decided on the 50 contrast to maintain a natural look for various DVDs.  Using a THX Optimizer brightness test pattern, my contrast reduction required a corresponding brightness increase from -1 to 0.

Eto po yung aking Calibration po for Panasonic L32X10 using DVE calibration

For BD Watching:

Mode = Cinema
Contrast = 65
brightness = +11
Colour = 50
Sharpness = 10
tint = +13
colour balance = normal
colour management = on

medyo nalilito ako sa brightness calibration .... di ko totally maintindihan .... kaya what I did, I just let the really black bar almost show out of the background. Otherwise I will fail the other tests of contrast kasi (dapat daw kasi 100% visible lahat sa display). nag cli clip yung lowest blacks kasi

sa RGB calibration. Na perfect ko red and blue, but di ko maayos ang green. so pasensiya na i need to return the Calibration Bluray na kasi ;D and there seems no other way for me to adjust it further pa ..... compromise  :'( :'( :'( :'(

abang ako ibang posts

Wow, I have a classmate in Sony W550!!! hehehe!!! Sir jdjoeydean I found this setting on the internet for a Sony 40W5500, thats a UK model. But I think thats the UK version of our Sony W550.

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Sony-KDL40W5500/Settings.htm

I find the picture too yellowish, kaya i place the color temperature to neutral and gamma setting to 0.

Ok naman, but will still schedule the calibration from SnS at more than 100 hours na ito eh. Once calibration is done, I will post it here.

Hi Guys,

Did you notice that most of the TweakTV settings for any brand has the color mode set to warm 2.  I like the richness of the color but somehow it makes the white look a bit too yellow?  Was hoping someone could explain this to me.  Thanks! :)
Hi sir, many of our guru's here can explain these farther, just whant to share my little knowlege. The normal daylight, the sun produce is about 6500k color temperature (notist it a little bit yellowish?) By setting the lcd color temp to warm its mimiking (or its the closes) the light ambient the sun producing. Different color temperature will apect how color the eye will persive, so by setting it to warm we can percive color much lifelike, much accurate, than setting it to different color temp. if you have a painting's sir try to view it in different lightning condition, and you will notist the changing in color. Sory po sa ot. Sana po makatulong. Regards to all.

Hi My_einjels,

Thanks for answering my query.  Will try out different calibration settings that use Warm 2. :)

According to the experts, 6500K is the correct color temperature.  6500K is also referred to as a "daylight illuminant", because it corresponds roughly to a mid-day sun in Western Europe / Northern Europe.

(Approximate color temperatures of various light sources:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature#Categorizing_different_lighting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature#Categorizing_different_lighting))

Some say that most monitors and TVs use a default color temperature of 9300K because most people prefer the slightly bluer color temperature.  This default setting causes more and more people to get used to a 9300K temperature.

As a result, the correct temperature of 6500K looks too yellow to the average person.

I don't know if that explanation is true --- I just got it from foreign forums  ;D.  But In my case, I also think 6500K is too yellow.

Maybe I should also try out a Warm color temp setting and see if I'll get used to it.

@barrister

just a quick one...

why do you guys switch off the color management feature? i always switch it off just because, i see most people do, but i don't really know the reason behind it.

thanks.

For accuracy in picture quality, the rule of thumb is to turn off all picture enhancements, since those tweaks usually do more harm than good.

According to Panasonic's TV FAQ page, Color Management "automatically enhances green and blue to achieve a more vivid color reproduction, especially for outdoor scenes".

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PlasmaFAQ?storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&langId=-1&catGroupId=24973

If you like enhanced greens and blues, set it to "on"; for accurate color reproduction, set it to "off".

won't the picture be too "noisy" with p-nr and 3d combo off?

Yes, but it's a matter of personal preference.

I prefer reducing color, contrast and sharpness rather than engaging P-NR and Comb filters.

At any rate, freeview TV quality is so low that it doesn't really matter much, either way.

With these shared settings, is it still advisable to have SnS calibrate the TV?  Do we need to turn whatever management settings off before they calibrate or would they know to do that already?

I just wanted to share the settings that I have been using for my Samsung LN40B530. The settings was really for a L650 but the settings work for me. Been using it for the past 2 months and the PQ is definitely so much better than the standard settings.

I liked the settings in the link i found below because it also included specific settings for the White Balance setting in the TV. Most of the other settings I have found just play around with the usual controls - Brightness, Contrast, Color, Sharpness, etc.

I know that nothing really beats a professionally calibrated screen but since my HT setup is in the bedroom with no controlled light source (my wife likes thin curtains and I have been fighting a losing battle to get her to agree to change to heavy drapes so I can better control the light settings in the room). So this is better than not changing the settings at all or even paying for a calibrator.

Note of caution: I have noticed that if the TV gets unplugged that I have had to set the settings again so its good if you copy the settings down somewhere. I am just thankful that with the technology that goes into the new screens is so much better and energy-efficient even when on stanby. My dad couldn't believe at first that the standby power consumption of my new toy was just <1W.  ;D

Also if your viewing in a bright room, the only thing I change from the settings below is the backlight from 5 to 10 especially if viewing in the day. Though by now, I have adjusted to just viewing at 5 setting for the backlight regardless of the light conditions. Funny thing is that at night, even the 5 settings seems too bright so what they say about adjustment to new settings just takes time is right on the money.

Anyway, enjoy the settings and let us know how they worked for you!
