Only reason I buy Sky Guide is for Cinema One.

Also the only reason I go for Skycable.

I think you can subscribe, have it delivered.

last night was Kisapmata.  Still a great film  :o

Title: Cinema One movies
Post by: rse on Jan 04, 2003 at 05:24 AM
Hi,

I just came back from holidays from Manila and was able to see or tape some of the classic movies that they've shown last December.

It's quite an impressive list, which included Insiang, Minsa'y Isang Gamo-Gamo, Ganito Kami Noon, Moral, Lipad Darna Lipad, etc.

I've just watched Insiang and I appreciate it more now than the last time I saw it (a long time ago,  I think that was the time when they showed some Brocka movies at Channel 4 right after he died).

I think it has less cuts than the network version.
I noticed that they've muted all the P.I.'s (bad language) though.

I am also amazed at the quality of the movie.  It looks almost new.  Has it been remastered?  The sad thing is that it's cropped.  It's quite obvious in the title sequence.  Some of the names were cut on the sides.

One question. Are there any cuts at all in this cable version of Insiang?  Or is it the complete version?

On another note, it's nice to see that the original VCD's are a lot cheaper now (starts at Php 150) and they are beginning to release old titles.  I bought a lot of them.

I got a copy of Celso Ad Castillo's Isla.  I think it's not a bad film.

The Filipino DVDs collection is limited.  I think you can buy more titles on on-line stores over the Internet, but they are cheaper there, only Php 450.

Post by: Noel_Vera on Jan 04, 2003 at 05:34 AM
I think Insiang's uncut.

Why the print's so clear goes like this: Brocka shipped out the negatives of several films to Pierre Rissent in France.  They now reside in the British Film Archive, I believe, and Rissent has full control of all except Maynila sa Kuko, which belongs to Mike de Leon.

In effect, Brocka sold his best films to Mephistopheles.  In exchange, they have been miraculously preserved.

Is there anybody here who knows where to look for the monthly schedules of movies shown in Cinema One on line?  I tried the Skycable's Web site, they don't have it (which I think is very peculiar, irresponsible on their part).

It's listed in Sky's Guide Magazine, available in all National Book Stores nationwide. I buy every month (P75). If you wish I could post schedules of films you're interested in.
Title: Cinema One sked
Post by: Reuven Malter on Jan 04, 2003 at 02:57 PM
Here's some of the film skeds I blocked for my calendar this month:

Kisapmata - Jan 5 (Sun) 10pm

Hinugot Ka Sa Langit - Jan 15 (Wed) 9pm

Hesus Rebolusyonaryo - Jan 20 (Mon) 9pm

Kisapmata and Hesus upon recommendation from Noel. Thanks!

Hi Reuven,

Thanks for the posting.
Yep, I would appreciate it if you could post a monthly schedule of any films from Brocka, Bernal, O Hara, and Mike de Leon.

I actually asked a friend in the Philippines to occasionally tape some movies for me (we don't have TFC in Europe), the problem is that she's not much of a film buff.

When I was there last Dec. I did buy SkyGuide and was able to record some good ones.

Here's a list of some other movies that I am yet to see and heard that Cinema One shows once in a while:

Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag
Himala
Tatlong Taon Walang Diyos
Oro Plata Mata
Darna at Ding
Batch 81
Bayan Ko
Bona
and other significant 70's and 80's movies or any other classics of any era.

Thanks in advance for keeping an eye on those films.

According to the Guide, the particular films you mentioned don't seem slated this month. Aside from the ones I'm watching out for myself and have posted earlier, here are other worthwhile ones (I've seen them already):

starring Helen Gamboa

Jan 13, 4pm; 27, 7:15am

Bagong Buwan by Marilou Diaz-Abaya

Um, will anyone be kind enough to tape some of these?  We've long since switched to Destiny Cable, and I'd hate it if I don't see some of the films to be shown there.  Maybe I'll just pay for the cost of tapes and the trouble.  Just PM me.

Will it help if I say pretty please?

Many of the recent films--Hesus, Sisa, Bubungang Lata, Pangarap ng Puso--are available online, through mailorder in the US.  Try www.regalfilms.com, use their search engine.

The classics, yep, you better have em taped...

Right at this moment, am watching Ang Tatay Kong Nanay .. good stuff. I remember laughing when I saw it before..... now it's not funny at all. I am seing all these drama behind the comedic facade. Hate the background music though  ....

Just watch all of the films you possibly can, reuven.
 :)

You can form your own conclusions after watching these films. For all you know, you might just like some of the movies that the other members have reservations about.  :)

I myself found Relasyon very hysterical and noisy but I still watched it, and will still do so on Feb. 6.  Which reminds me, I need to stock up on popcorn.

i tend to watch films based on word-of-mouth, that's why i always consult rottentomatoes.com; i consider my time in viewing films as an investment. if there isn't much good feedback on the film, i won't make time for it anymore. i always find myself disappointed in our local films after seeing some, especially those i eagerly see after having read raves in the local papers. lately, i find some wanting. so far, the only local filmmaker that never disappointed me would be mike de leon. maybe because he rarely makes films.

I agree with your assessment of mike de leon's films. I think he's brilliant.

Actually I'm waiting for confirmation about a rumor that de leon released some films of his on DVD. My contact is my wife's friend whho is a relative of Mike de leon. Hopefully, it is true and, also hopefully, he can get me copies.  :)

bilangin ang bituin sa langit with nora aunor on Feb 5 @2am, Feb 8 @5am, Feb 18 @ 2am.

I don't remember this one.  Who directed?

Noel, Bilangin ang Bituin sa Langit was directed by Elwood Perez. It stars Nora Aunor, Tirso Cruz III, Gloria Romero, and Miguel Rodriguez. An award winning movie from Guy & Pip but also very commercial. It was Regal Films' 16th Anniversary presentation in 1989 and I think Nora's last movie at Regal Films. May feud ba si Nora at Mother Lily kaya hindi na ito nabibigyan ng project?

Could be.  Know the Regal Studios on Valencia Street, San Juan?  Used to be Nora's.  Nora insulted Mother somehow and Mother swore she'd buy that house away from her. She did.

Then again, it could be Nora was going through a bad period.  Things like that happen in the industry all the time...

Amores Perros Mar 30, 8pm

Superior to Tarantino, worthwhile.

Ang Bagong Bayani: The Flor Contemplacion Story Mar 26, 4pm

Tikoy's best work, I think, it looks and is structured like no other Filipino film I know.

Babae sa Bubungang Lata Mar 17, 4pm; 22, 5am

The second best film of the '90s, and a wonderful closing elegy to the local film industry.

Babae Mar 8, 9am; 13, 2pm; 24, 7:15am

Has a worthwhile performance by Nora Aunor, her best in years.  Also has Juday, but Aunor's good enough to overcome that...

Dahil Mahal Kita: The Dolzura Cortez Story Mar 24, 9pm; 29, 3:15pm

One of the better AIDs movies, one of Vilma's better roles, and a pretty good (not her best) effort by Laurice Guillen.

Kakabakaba Ka Ba? Mar 18, 9pm

Mike de Leon's comedy.  Worthwhile.

Moral Mar 8, 1:15pm

One of Ricky Lee's best efforts.

Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang Mar 3, 9pm; 11, 9am; 16, 10pm; 29, 1am

Great film, one of the best by Brocka, written by Mario O'Hara WITH a great performance by Lolita Rodriguez and Mario O'Hara.

Tuhog Mar 31, 9pm

Pretty good film, Jeutrian and Bing Lao.

Was wondering if we missed a title or two, looked over the cable guide, found these:

Halik ng Sirena March 20, 9 pm

Could be the Erik Matti flick.  Young Critic's Circle recommends it; who knows it might actually be worthwhile (but remember Vampira...!)

Mga Bilanggong Birhen March 20, 11 pm

Watch this.  Written by and ALMOST directed by Mario O'Hara.  He shot about 90% of the film, then reportedly walked out when the producer started on him.  A lesser director--name slips the mind at the moment--took over.  By way of protest, Lino Brocka had his scenes as a cultist priest taken out; he was replaced by Johnny Delgado.

The editing doesn't have the O'Hara touch, and you miss it badly.  But the camerawork, the performances, the overall film despite this is breathtaking.  Nick Deocampo noted that O'Hara wasn't much older than Raymond Red when both made their first period films--Raymond with Bayani, O'Hara with this--but look at both, and you can see who had the more epic, more complex, and ultimately more moving vision.

Oh, and Alma Moreno actually gives a good performance (this is Cinema One, so you won't see her nude scenes with Johnny Delgado in a cult ritual, unfortunately).  And Armida Siugion Reyna is incredible--wonderful performance.  And she glows.  She's never been more beautiful than in this film.  I'd say WHY, but I do want to stay alive... ;D

whoah, they dubbed malena? Jeez, is there no end to this dubbing frenzy?

unfortunately yes, dina bonnevie and carlo munoz provided the voices of the protagonists.

That was CARLO AQUINO and Dina Bonnevie  :)

I'm no fan of dubbed movies but the dubbing of Malena was not that bad, for some reason it actually worked well with the movie. Maybe because the mood is very similar to Filipino sentiments. I think Dina Bonnevie and Carlo Aquino were perfect for the roles that they were dubbing. And the Filipino dialogues weren't that contrived thanks to Ricky Lee's fresh approach to the script.

Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang was shown in Cinema One last night and I couldn't watch it. Huhuhu. :'(  Hopefully I can catch the other screenings.

Sana mapanood ko to ulit. This is one of the best Filipino films ever made.

Three more showings, I think.  Check upthread.

On Malena:

It probably also helps (tho I'm guessing this) that a good portion of Italian films are already dubbed, or don't use original sound recording...

Hmmm. I like Cain at Abel. I don't have that in my collection. I better send sansrival a message :-)

I remember liking it because of Baby Delgado. I forgot if that was really her name ... but I think she had a miscarriage in the film. Can't recall now if she was Philip Salvador or Christopher de Leon's wife. Anyway, it was one of the 80s Brocka movies that I  like.

Amores Perros Apr 4, 6.30pm

Better than Tarantino, but doesn't transcend him.

Anak Apr 22, 4.30pm

Um...I don't know...

Ang Tatay Kong Nanay Apr 9, 7.45am; 12, 12.30pm; 16, 6.30pm

One of Dolphy's best performances (another would be Facifica Falayfay).

Atsay Apr 4, 4.30pm; 13, 2.30pm; 28, 9.30am

Um...I don't know again...

Batch '81 Apr 23, 8pm

Mike de Leon...a must see...

Bayarang Puso Apr 6, 6.30pm; 16, 4.30pm

Yuk.

Himala Apr 18, 2.30pm; 24, 6am

One of Bernal's most visual films...and prophetic--the town prefigures the lahar landscape of Pinatubo...

Itim Apr 18, 11.30pm; 27, 7.30am

Masterful gothic exercise...a first draft for Kisapmata...

Mila Apr 6, 9.30am; 21, 9.30pm; 29, 9.30am

Yicks.

Pila Balde Apr 22, 11.30pm

Jeffrey's best and I'd say Bing Lao's best after Takaw Tukso.

Shake Rattle and Roll 1 Apr 11, 9.30am; 13, 7.30am; 26, 4.30am

Frigyider by Bernal is my favorite...perverse horror comedy about a killer fridge...

Sisa Apr 17, 11.30pm

I think it's a great film, the greatest in the '90s; not a lot of people agree (though Kidlat Tahimik and Nonoy Lauzon of Young Critics Circle do).  I don't blame em, but still...

Tuhog Apr 8, 9.30am

Pretty good, tho there are some flaws in the premise and the film doesn't go far enough.  First time Ina Raymundo gives a good performance, and she's fantastic.  Great performance, however, by Irma Adlawan as Ina's mom...

Wating Apr 5, 8.45am; 11, 2.30pm

Disappointing last film by Ishmael Bernal.  You wonder if he was high when he shot this...

A few missed out:

Perfumed Garden, April 10 at 11.30 pm.

Not Celso Ad. Castillo at his best, but still some striking images and edited sequences and I think a terrific performance from Michael de Mesa...

Bomba Star, April 11 at 11.30 pm.

Joey Gosengfiao gives Alma Moreno the star treatment.  Great camp; funny performances from everyone, even Eddie Guttierrez as a gay macho.

Johnny Tinoso and the Proud Beauty, April 17 at 12 pm; April 21 at 7.45 am.

Flawed film, full of production shortages (the special effects are embarrassing) about a monstrous beast named Johnny (Jestoni Alarcon) and an arrogant beauty (Gretchen Baretto).  Overall, Nick Joaquin hated this adaptation.

But Johnny is cured of his curse in the middle and not at the end of the film...and what follows is an interesting variant of the classic Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.  Gretchen is a wittier, bitsier beauty than the rather tepid creature in the Disney version.  The ending I think is lovely.

La Vida Rosa, April 24 at 9.30 am

One of Chito Rono's best, thanks to a noirish script by Amado Lao

Misteryo sa Tuwa, April 25, 9 am

One of the ECP films, a fable like story about a few men who discover a suitcasefull of money in a plane crash.  Prefigures A Simple Plan by decades.  Quite good.

PAGPUTI NG UWAK, PAG-ITIM NG TAGAK is one film that marks the genius of the kid during his heyday. And the cast are all wonderful from Vilma, Bembol to Angie Ferro and Adul de Leon.
