Other notable differences...

- Tray loading
- Resume function now included.
- Individual RCA audio output for powered speakers (yung pang PC).

What I didn't like was that the microphone volume knob (for karaoke) is now at the side instead of the front panel.

just upgraded from a 5965 to 5986...

my concern was the "insertability" of a mini disk...
dont want to risk inserting a mini in a slide in  loading...
kayi upgraded to tray loading.

For the owners of this player, compile ko lang yung mga questions about this player for the sake of those who are planning to buy, including me, hehehe ;D

1.) Does it upscale via Component?
2.) what comes with the package? HDMI cable included?
3.) is it a region free player?
4.) Hows its PQ and SQ compared to pio 696,400,600..etc..
5.) May firmware ba 'to for upgrades?
6.) Mabenta ba ang unit na 'to?hehehe ;D

thanks,
reynold ;)

The problem with this is that it doesn't play SACD.  Pioneer 600 does.

The problem with this is that it doesn't play SACD.  Pioneer 600 does.

most people would use the digital out to the receiver anyway; and besides, the Pioneer doesn't convert DSD to analog signals: it converts it to PCM, then converts it to DSD. its the BurrBrown dac that makes it sound good, not the SACD or the benefits of DSD processing on regular PCM recordings.

got this one around 3 weeks ago. happy with it. btw, thiss player is not region all by default... but you can unlock it (nullifying your warranty according to the manula/website), but of course who cares!

the philips salesman at the sm appliance store showed it to me and got the same instruction steps at avforum. region all na setting ko.

Title: philips dvp5986k 24hour ownership review
Post by: HouseBum on Jan 15, 2008 at 02:22 PM
I was at Sm Southmall Appliance Center and picked this unit for 4990 mainly due to the positive reviews in Newegg of the US version (DVP5980) in terms of accepting DVD media. Which to me was imp't since I have home made DVD's. Played any DVD-/+R's effortlessly (Philips, Sony, Verbatim, BenQ, even the 50php CDR King dual layer dvd). Was also able to play Jack Sparrow  ;) edition DVD's from your suking tindahan.

It comes with remote w/batteries, rca cable and the power cord (i like how the power cord is detachable). Had to go up to cdr king to buy an hdmi cable for it. The unit was already multi region when I got it (tested with my R1 and R3 original dvd's). It only upscales through the HDMI ( 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p - couldn't test this one out since my Pana 32LE7 doesn't support it, and curiously, AUTO).

DivX playback is great. Plays with subtitles but not really white, usually in grey font with a semi translucent border frame. The upscaling feature is more prominent with DivX files than with DVD's. Also it will only display around 6 characters of your file name, so playing files from an enclosure (which you have to plug in its own power source) may be difficult if you didn't name them in order. It lets you scroll too up to 32x even with DivX files.

With DVD's, I noticed the black bars we're thinner than what displayed before with my Nextbase DVP818 whether 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 dvd's. There we're some DVD's that you could really notice the difference with 480p, 720p and 1080i. I just finished dl'ing a DVD Video Essentials and will try advanced configurations on my player and TV later to see as to what improvements, if any, its upscaling has.

The menu is a little tricky and probably the units' biggest downfall. The remote also isn't very well layed out, I believe they designed it foremost to be small rather than be user friendly. However browsing through the manual and a few hours using it you'll be able to master the remote.

If you want a relatively cheap DVD player you can hook up through HDMI that isn't picky with DVD media and will play DivX files then this will do the trick. As for its' upscaling with DVD's, I was quite happy with my NB DVP818's playback on my Pana 32LE7 via s-video already, the only really discernible difference was the thinner black bars. However on DivX playback, the upscaling was more prevalent.

Housebum,

Thanks for the very informative review of the Phillips dvp5986k upscaler.
I saw this unit in Anson's Libis and was eyeing it for several days now.
The only thing stopping me was the lack of feedback from those who have already used this player.
My other purpose really for this player, asides from playing DVDs, is really plugging in my 300GB HD enclosure thru USB where I have stashed quite number of downloaded DivX movie files since last year.
Did you encounter any significant problems plugging in your HD enclosure? Are you using FAT32 or NTFS?
I read several feedbacks regarding the limitations of the USB port on these DVD players where it could not read files on HD enclosures but only on USB memory sticks.
Did the Phillips dvp5986k upscaler finally solved this problem?
Any feedback on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alehoy

According to the manual, it only recognizes FAT16 and FAT32 (sector size 2k bytes) file systems. As for compatible USB mass storage device, it only supports Flash memory drives and Flash players and memory cards via a card reader.

Title: Re: philips dvp5986k (1080p dvd upscale player)

The user manual states that you may connect the device to a multi channel receiver (front L&R, rear L&R, center & subwoofer ports)  with a Dolby Digital Decoder (does this answer your query, sorry not very audio proficient).Though the player has both Dolby Digital and DTS logos represented on its physical body, the manual, and to an extent my knowledge about the player, is quite ambiguous as to the extent of the player's capabilities regarding either.

actually sir sfcc tama ka diyan, however with the price that we bought the 32s of sammy last december e presyo na nang 40s ngayon that are capable of 1080p lalo na yung pocket friendly na panny.  kakahinayang, had i known pdvd earlier .... hay buhay, talagang lagi sa huli ang pagsisisi.  mabuti na lang at may forum na ganito... gets you educated and makes your risks extra calculated.

I agree, but not that much with an upscaler using a standard dvd disc as source.

Ang malaking difference is using a HDdvd or blu ray player and play it with HD or blue ray disk sa mga full HD na TV.

How does this model compare with Pioneer in terms of playback reliability?

I'm not worried about picture quality, since Philips also uses a good Mediatek DAC.

What I'm looking for is a player that is the least picky when playing DVD discs.  My Pioneer 490 has a slight hiccup on the 2-disc Bram Stoker's Dracula (U.S. R1).

Post by: barrister on May 16, 2008 at 01:50 PM

Easy lang mag regionless sa Philips -- just enter a code on the remote.  That's why it's OK even if they're region-locked out of the box.

It's harder on newer Pioneers -- you will need a laptop.  That's why they should be region-free out of the box.

Philips dvp5986k has jacket_p support.  It's a minor feature, but it's nice to have.

Anong pumalit sa player na 'to sa Philips lineup?

If higher model numbers are newer, then based on Philips PH web site, I assume that the newer models are DVP5990K/98 and DVP5996K/98? Based on Philips US web site, I assume that the newer models are DVP5990/37 and DVP5992/37?

Can anyone confirm that these higher number models are actually 'newer/better/improved'?

Anyone know the difference between the ***K/98 and the ***/37 models? Is it just AC voltage?

Thinking of buying this, but would like to ask first...

How does the USB connection on this player (or, in general, on DVD players that have a USB port) work?

Does it work like this -- you connect the player to a computer, the player looks like a USB storage device to the computer, you copy mp3 files to the player, and then the player can play them, and the digital output comes out not only through the analog audio outputs but also through the S/PDIF digital audio (coax and/or TOSLINK optical) outputs?

If so, what is the storage capacity of the DVD player?

the player has no storage capacity. you have to plug un a flash drive with music, movies etc...

Anybody seen DVP5986K in stores lately? Seems to have disappeared.

Salesperson at Abenson Trinoma claimed that DVP5996K is the replacement model and that they had one unit of DVP5996K for P4,990, though it was not on display.

Anson's Trinoma did not have the DVP5986K nor the DVP5996K.

I could no longer find info on DVP5996K on Philips PH website. Last January 2009, it was in the list of players but now it seems to have disappeared.

I'll also record here a direct link to DVP5990K/98 because every now and then Philips PH website seems to get screwed up and you can't find your way to a specific model anymore.

http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/ph/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5990K_98_PH_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-HDMI-and-USB+DVP5990K-98 (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/ph/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5990K_98_PH_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-HDMI-and-USB+DVP5990K-98)

Now where is that DVP5996K/98 page? It was there before. I downloaded the pdf spec sheet before. Did Philips PH drop it from their website for some reason?

On the Philips US website, the model lineup is more complicated than before. Last January, I saw DVP5990/37 and DVP5992/37. Now there are four --

DVP5990/37
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5990_37_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player+DVP5990-37 (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5990_37_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player+DVP5990-37)
DVP5990/F7
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5990_F7_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-USB+DVP5990-F7 (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5990_F7_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-USB+DVP5990-F7)
DVP5992/37
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5992_37_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-USB+DVP5992-37 (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5992_37_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-USB+DVP5992-37)
DVP5992/F7
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5992_F7_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-USB+DVP5992-F7 (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_DVP5992_F7_US_CONSUMER/DVD-player-with-USB+DVP5992-F7)

Why do these manufacturers have to make so many different models with small differences on features and from country to country. Why can't they have just a few models that work anywhere on the planet, like Oppo.

A consequence of having so many variations is that consumers can get confused or overwhelmed or paralyzed, and not buy anything at all, no?

ive observed that there are movies na ang sama ng upscaling ng player na 'to...
ive observed it  most of the the time sa mga full screen movies..tapos I upscale it..
may lumalabas na parang distorted image sa right side ng TV.. yung distortion is parang yung image is under magnifying glass..similar then sa mga pictures taken by ultra-wide lens...

btw, my TV is  42PV8..

pag ganyan nangyayari binabalik ko na lang sa 480p and let the TV do the upscaling..then automatically nawawala distortion so I deduced that sa DVD upscaling ang problema ko...

I recently noticed something annoying about my 5986.

I can't disable the on-screen multi-angle icon.

It appears only when the program material contains multiple angles.  But when it does appear, I can't find any way to turn it off.

Is there any way to disable the on-screen icon?

Make sure under video hdmi options, on Widescreen Format option, (watching 4:3 images on a 16X9 tv) set this to 4:3 pillarbox. In this setting, 4:3 images will not be stretched and will appear as it is with bars on both sides. However, this is only effective when the player is set to 720p to 1080p and tv aspect ratio set to 16X9.

I havent encountered this issue on my PV70. All resolution modes appear fine with no distortion at all. One thing I noticed lang is when the player is set to 480p or 576p, the image seems to be too sharp and the hue is a little on the pinkish side. With 720p to 1080p, picture sharpness and colors look very natural and more cinematic.

My 5986 sometimes freezes when playing Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer discs.

Everything else plays fine.  No problems with single layer DVD-R.  No problems with pressed orig. DVDs, whether single or dual layer.

Disc details:

Verbatim DVD+R DL;
MID: MKM 003 000;
Burned with ImgBurn 2.4.4.0;
Book type DVD-ROM;
Write speed 8x;
Passed Nero ScanDisc Test, 100% at 8x.

I tried cleaning the lens with a Philips lens cleaner disc, but there was no improvement.  I updated the firmware, still no improvement.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

recently bought a dvp 5996k may stock pa sa western trinoma. 4990 may less 500 ata pag cash. may free pa na clock/am/fm radio. nasira kasi yung pioneer 600 ko. mas maganda ang sound via hdmi compared sa pioneer. sa picture wala naman noticeble diff kasi pareho sila upscaling.
