This has to be the one of the best DVDs produced this year!
So far I have watched 2+ hours worth of bonus materials and I am not even halfway thru yet!
-
me too. i tried to play Dopey's Wild Mine Ride. And didn't go too far. I guess, i have to watch the movie first before exploring some other features.
-
According to Viva Video, the R3 release is the same as the R1. I dunno lang if the R3 was made in the US also like The Godfather as what ASTRO mentioned.

Disney's ``Snow White'' DVD sells 1 million units on Day 1
By Bob Tourtellotte
BURBANK, Calif., (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co. Wednesday said its new Platinum Collection DVD of the classic children's movie ``Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' sold 1 million units in its first day on retail shelves.
The robust sales could be a harbinger of positive DVD news this coming holiday season for all of Hollywood's movie studios. And for Disney in particular, it provides a strong start for its strategy of releasing classic movies on DVD for a limited time only as part of the Platinum collectibles.
``What this does is demonstrate the demand for the most classic Disney movies,'' Bob Chapek, president of Disney's Buena Vista Home Entertainment, told Reuters. ``We anticipated that this would be a favorable indicator for that strategy.''
Disney's Platinum series strategy, put in place back in 1999, was meant to bolster the home video division, which had been a prime revenue generator, but began to underperform due to competitive pressure and too many videos on retail shelves.
Disney decided to keep its 10 most lucrative movies, such as ``Snow White,'' ``The Lion King'' and ``Cinderella,'' off video shelves for a period of time, then begin bringing them back -- one each year for 10 years -- in a Platinum series loaded with special features and available for a limited time only.
The ``Snow White'' DVD, for instance, will be on sale only through January 2002. ``Snow White'' has been one of Disney's most valuable properties over the years. Since the animated film made its debut in 1937, the movie and products based on it have generated $1 billion in revenues for the company.
Chapek said the idea behind the Platinum Series strategy is to keep Disney's best titles out of consumer hands as new technologies develop that would allow them to build completely new products around old movies and other content.
DVD is relatively new, and this holiday season the format is expected to see robust sales as more than 20 million DVD players are now in consumer homes.
Typically new DVDs contain pristine digital copies of movies for playback and extra features like director commentaries. But increasingly, they also include games for kids, soundtracks, and other features.
The ``Snow White'' discs contain a completely restored edition of the classic movie, a ``magic mirror'' to guide viewers through an insider's tour of the world of Snow White and Barbra Streisand singing ``Some Day My Prince Will Come,'' among its features.
Chapek said after developing and testing the two-disc DVD with consumers, Disney had high expectations for sales, but the 1 million units in day one was still pleasing to see.
The company reportedly shipped 4.5 million units to retailers this week as the title rolled out. Chapek declined to say exactly how many units were shipped, but he did say the exact figure was near the 4.5 million units.
The top-selling DVD of all time is DreamWorks Oscar-winning movie ``Gladiator,'' which has sold 5.5 million copies since going on sale last year.

Btw, here's the link to dvdfile's review of Snow White:

(Video gets a perfect 5! "Quite simply, I was blown away with how beautiful this new, painstaking restored remaster looks." )

The 2Disc Code3 of this DVD already being sold in here in Singapore for S$36.

Weddingsinger,
Havent been around lately,Is the SW available locally or anyone you know selling snow white R1 but if R3 is the same I might get R3? Thanks
-
I just got mine today and it's as amazing as everybody has been saying it is. The amount of features is just mind boggling. But more importantly, the picture of the movie itself was startling. I've seen this many times but looking at this DVD feels like seeing the movie, really SEEING the movie for the first time. Makes me almost forget the 880 pesoses in tax I had to pay to claim it.
The Dopey game is cool! I got through it at first try! he. he. ;D
If an R3 of this is released locally, I'd buy that as well, just to have another one in my hands, and also to see if there are any differences.
-
boy you guys are making me drool over the hoopla.. can't wait to get my copy. looks like a really good BUY!!!!!!
btw, FYI, I saw one for sale in 5th AVE in Park Square 1 Makati. wasn't able to ask the price though.

I wonder how Shrek DVD (out in November) is going to measure up to this. I'm pretty sure Dreamworks will give Snow White a good fight.
The good thing about this competition is, the consumer gets all the benefits and their money's worth. ;)
-
just got it in the mail all 5 copies ;D
(took advantage of the free dvd promo)
can't wait to get home to pop it in the dvd player...
gee the last time i saw this was in the movies....
way back in...nevermind! ;D
-
Just got the SW R3 disc from Astro for 850. Its double disc and when I scanned it, it has tons of features.
-
Well just saw the 1st half last night (since my daughter fell asleep as snow white was singing "Someday My Prince Will Come")
Anyway my wife was amazed by the clarity of the restoration. She said that this was way better than the vhs copy she had, where scratches and dust where very visible on the film. The bottom line is that I’m very happy to share this experience with my daughter...at 1st she did not want to see this movie because she thought it was a scary movie since the commercial for this dvd showed more of the witch than snow white, but at no time she was laughing with the seven dwarfs....
Hi-ho--hi-ho-- ;D

Cinderella??

oopps! i meant snow white...i guess i'm still dreamy eyed...
thanks for pointing that out

Just want to know if the R3 Snow White disc is THX certified too?
Thanks
-
Im not really sure if its THX certified but in the cover there is a logo of THX and when you play it, The THX appears. Does that mean its THX certified? My SW is R3.
-
Sir Levi,
Thanks for the reply. If it has the logo then it's THX certified, just like the RG 1 disc. I saw the RG3 disc at ASTRO megamall yesterday but I didn't notice the THX logo on the cover. I'm thinking of buying the RG3 disc, just making sure both discs have the same transfer and features, except for the soundtrack, RG3 has english 5.1, mandarin 5.1 while the RG1 disc has english 5.1 and the original mono soundtrack, which is the usual difference between RG1 & RG3 discs. Salamat po and happy viewing!!!

With the R1 version, you get a free Disney DVD, right? But wait, the R3 Snow White comes a promo too! heh. You get to pick from a bowl of rolled-up paper strips, each containing one of the seven dwarves. Each dwarf corresponds to a Snow White school-supplies item, like a pencil or eraser or memo pad. ;D
But the biggest bonus, of course, is the price. It's more cost-effective to get the R3 version, considering shipping, taxes and waiting time.
-
The R1 2-Disc Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs now available in Singapore DVD shops at S$50 (around P1,450).
-
;D ;D I got my SW R3 last saturday over at Astro Southmall...it was the last piece...heheh....i called them up to check if they still have stocks...and had it reserved!!! ;D so after a few hours...we were there to pick her up na...!!! cool cover!!! ;D
I watched it and grabe....cartoons with THX....man!!! the first time i got a THX MOVIE....cartoons pa!!
Grabe sa dami ng extra features.....and the picture is astounding.....digitally remastered!!! they removed all the dirt particles from the original film.....and improved the color quality....kaya ang ganda ng lumabas ;D ;D
we got our money's worth for this dvd ;D ;D
-
Ok, MoRpHeOus..you got me there!! :D buy na nga rin ako!!I'll try ATC or Festival if they still got extra piece.
-
I'm drooling already.
Where can I get a copy ? Wala na yata sa 5th Ave and Spectra. ::)
-
I want one too, but I'm willing to wait out the hoopla.
OT: Protege98, ikaw ba yung Protege98 sa Mach2?
-
Yup ! Are you Marcel, the Web God ??? ;D
Staind introduced me to this awesome forum.
-
MARCEL=WEB GOD?! Hahaha. Though I've never heard that one before, I'm not surprised. Web God nga talaga yan si marcel!
-
As per Disney, Snow white & the Seven Dwarfs (Platinum Edition) will be discontinued on January 31, 2002.
-
For those interested in scoring R3 copies, I saw several copies available at National Bookstore and the Viva kiosk (near the Rustan's entrance) in Shangri-la Plaza yesterday (10/24).
-
thanx! ;) the sharing and comparison is good but we need naman the price difference, kasi walang nagpopost kung magkano yung region 3, o baka naman naoverlook ko lang? ::)
thanx again!

Actually Levi already posted the price in Reply #11 of this thread. You may have overlooked it on page one. :)
-
DVDiva,

siguro for marketing purposes kaya may mga disney titles na discontinued by next year.
baka may ibang format na naman or bagong mga pakulo ba. ::)

I heard (from another forum) that the snow white dvd will be discontinued on jan. 31 2002. I can't confirm this but some americans have even bought several copies for themselves with the intention of selling it on ebay once its value goes up.
So, to anyone out there debating whether or not to get it, you might wanna factor this into your thinking.

That is true. The Snow White DVD will only be available for a limited time, after which, Disney will keep the title off the shelves. It's a common Disney practice especially on their lucrative franchise (The Lion King, Aladdin, Cinderella, Beauty & The Beast, etc.) so they can release them again ... say, after 10 years with new technology and at a higher price.
Coming up next from Disney is Dumbo DVD. ;)

well i may doubt that....coz' when they 1st released the limited ed. dvd versions of little mermaid, pinochio, peter pan and so on...last year they said that they will also have this on moratorium and would stop selling them jan 1, 2001, but as you can see they are still much available in the market....
so i would not panic..coz it would take sometime before all the snow white dvd's would dry out from the store shelf....
just my experience with disney dvd's...
-
hi everyone,
nakakaingit naman kayong lahat, meron na kayong kopya...
mukha atang hindi pa sweldo e gagastos na naman. well,
gaya ng sabi ni kakabanas "it's all worth the money"
right everyone??? oo naman kayo diyan...
habang buhay pa tayo---bilihin nalang natin lahat ang
gusto natin!!! ;D
well, kung snow white ay narito na, i'm sure "cinderella"
is in the process to come out soon... :)
happy viewing to all!
-
I think Cinderella is scheduled to come out in a Platinum Collection in 2005

If your Snow White dvd won't play under Windows XP, here's the patch (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q310/5/10.asp?id=Q310510&sd=GN&fr
=0&ln=EN-US) from Microsoft.

I bought both the R1 and R3 of the Snow White DVD, specially for the purpose of determining what differences they had. And what I've come up with is pretty interesting. The post is rather long and accompanied by scans of both covers, so I've put it up at this site:
http://www.geocities.com/headlesschicken/snow.html
Basically the features are quite the same, with some few exceptions.
-
Great work Komikero! ;D This is specially helpful to those (like me) who are deciding between R1 or R3. I missed out on the first offer - buy Snow White, get one Disney dvd free. Thanks.
-
I second the motion...
Me too, I'm also baffled thinking why should R1 be different in contents to other Regions.
-
The CD holder of Disc 2 is falling off. I have to replace the double sided tape. At first I thought that it was really installed at the bottom but when it fell, I reinstalled it in the middle. These little problems are becoming annoying.
-
I also have the R3 Snow white and was a little disappointed that it doesn't have the exact features, packaging etc. of the R1 disc. So I emailed Buenavista Home Video about it. Here's part of my email:
"Greetings from the Philippines!!! I just bought the Region 3 dvd of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at a local store. I found out that it doesn't have a 12 page booklet and has no dvd-rom features like the Region 1 dvd. Aren't all your
dvds for the different regions have the same content? I was really excited to buy this dvd only to find out that it lacks some of the features of the R1 release. I hope you can enlighten me on this matter."
And here's their reply:
"Thank you for your email.
Actually, only Region 1 DVD's are produced for the US. We are unfamiliar with who produces Region 3 DVD's, so we do not have access to any information on them.
Please write or call:
Buena Vista Home Entertainment
Level 5, The Como Centre
650 Chapel Street, South Yarra
Melbourne, Victoria 3141
Australia
Phone #: 613-9823-7800
Fax #: 613-9826-0411
For assistance."
In this case, since Viva Ents. is the Phil. licensee of Disney sila siguro ang nag-produce ng mga disney R3 dvds. Sana hindi naman siguro para maging mababa lang ang price ng mga R3 dvds kaya medyo kulang sa features or di maayos ang packaging. Kasi pareho lang naman ang price ng R1 dvd sa R3 dvd kung ico-convert mo.

Just had breakfast at mcdonald's. In the paper tray-liner, it advertises Disney's 100 or something. Part of the Disney's 100 thingie is that if you buy a Happy Meal, you CAN get a coupon for a P50.00 discount on the Snow White DVD or VHS from any VideoCity at Sta. Lucia or SM Malls. I'm not so sure though if every Happy Meal has a coupon or swerte-swertehan lang.
I'll post this also on the Buying Offline Threads.

So is there anyone out there that kept didn't open their R1 packs? (",) I got mine with the free DVD offer, and to tell you the truth, I'm not up to opening them. heehhehe
Oh well, I might as well get the R3 version. (",)
-
Snow White is daugther's favorite, I have to have it Kahit kailan pa yan lalabas...
-
Its already available. Check out marketplace baka may magbenta ng R1 or you can ask Parc.
-
Hello Lyon!
And it's available locally as an R3. But nowadays many Astrovision shops have sold them out, but I was told that new copies are coming soon.

Komikero,
You're very correct, last night I was roaming arround Ortigas center(SM Megamall, Shang and Robinsons) to look for Snow White..o walang tatawa ;D ;D and I did not find any R3 DVD. Kahit sa Astro-Vision na sinasabi mo na magkakaroon ng stock, mukhang malabo na. ??? And to think that on January 2002 Disney will stop selling/produce the SW Platinum edition, mas lalong mawawala na iyan sa mga stores maliban sa old stocks.

I saw one at a National Bookstore last week. It's in R3. And sells for P850.00

Hi CrUzSACK,
Saang National? Sa Megamall at Shangrilla..wala na...puro VCD at VHS nalang. Sa VideoCity wala narin. Hindi ako nagpa-panic ha ;D ;D Sino bang nagsasabi na nagpapanic ako ;D

-
people!meron sa shopwise festival mall and "O" store sa rockwell, power plant. All of them on region 3 format. I think tinatago lang ng astrovision ang mga copies nila! Kala nila sila lang ang meron eh! >:(
-
Pati sa Odyssey SM City Manila meron pa. I doubt na mauubusan, its not like Snow White is an underground movie. I think Disney just fools us into thinking that they'll be "limiting" stocks para mas tumaas ang demand. Baka kaya mabilis naubos sa Ortigas area because a disproportionate number of upper-middle class filipinos (dvd target market) shop in the malls there.
-
para sa iba pang naghahanap ng Snow White DVD sa Megamall, I recall seeing copies of it sa Toy Section ng SM Department store...

LOL @ Geoffrey...I saw the DVD at a National Bookstore in EVER Ortigas Ave. Ext, Pasig. Hindi nga pinapansin ang mga DVDs dun e. Ang dami dun, halos cartoons halos. ;D And around 40 DVD titles, priced at P850.00-P999.00...sungit lang ng mga miss dun, heheheheh. ;D
-
I dunno if the salesladies at Astro-Megamall are reliable but last night, I asked them if they have new copies of Snow White, one of them said "Sir, darating na bukas." (Thursday).
So, if some of you are willing to check, please pass by and do so. :)
(I already have the R1 ;), la lang, nagtatanong lang... ;D)
P.S. Also noticed that some of their 899 peso DVDs went down to 850.
-
8)this is definitely a " must have" classic...
i got mine at half.com affiliated with ebay for $14.50
sealed condition!!! :D and i've enjoyed every minute of
it- hi ho hi ho hi ho!!! 8)
-
for those who are interested in getting this, i just came from M1 in glorietta and saw that they still have lots of copies of this dvd available. R3 siyempre at php850.00 pa rin. yun lang, goodbye!
-
I updated my Snow White R1 VS R3 site:
http://www.geocities.com/headlesschicken/snow.html
I redesigned and reorganized it so it's easier to read. I've also removed my comments leaving it fully objective. Written descriptions of packaging has been replaced by hi res scans of covers, discs and booklets.
Hopefully, it will be a template for future comparisons. ;)
-
In case anyone's interested in buying, I'm selling an R3 DVD of this, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for P600, Free shipping. Unsealed but viewed only once and is like new. Check under DVD marketplace or email me at [email protected]. TY!! :P
-
any guys here in this thread who want to sell their Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs dvd? ;D
-
sa mga may gusto, i got one sa astro trinoma at meron pa ata isa...meron din ata akong nakita sa sm city record bar...
-
Looks like Viva is re-releasing these classics! I got Beauty and the Beast earlier at Video City SM Manila, at meron isa pa on display.
Will hunt for Snow White tomorrow...
-
btw, it's just 1-disc like Beauty and the Beast...
-
daiym! 1 disc lang....
But I can't help it, I better have this in my collection ;D
-
Yes, but considering this is OOP everywhere in the world but the Philippines, I'd be happy even with just the feature film, and with price like 299, how can any complain...
Snow White is not scheduled to be re-release until fall 2009, and BATB in 2010...
-
this had special features even though it's only 1-disc ;D
-
Like beauty and the Beast, this is very dissapointing. Yes, it's only a re-release from Viva but the packaging says "VIP tour of Disc two", I mean c'mon viva, di man lang erase yung indication na it was supposed to be a 2-disc version, I mean it was like a bootleg dvd... the customer feels cheated... oh and also the typo errors on past viva Disney titles like the "FUNE & Games" and "Include a Magic Carpet Ride" in Aladdin (supposed to be "FUN" & Games; and "Includes") and the error in the spelling of the director's name in the Lion King dvd. These might be small details but it somehow goes to show how Viva cares about the quality their putting in their dvd's. Doesit hurt for them to take a little time to proof-read their packaging and somehow put a little effort in Photoshop? If they managed to remove the "2-disc" labels on their pixar titles, why not do the same on some errors in other titles?
But then again since i'm an animation buff, I keep on letting these things pass and keep on buying them. wala n rin naman akong magagawa since Viva is our authority in "ORIGINAL" local Disney titles right?... it's just dissapointing somehow. :(
-
But consider that R1 folks have to pay outrageous prices because it's OOP, I think those mistakes and the lack of the second disc, (and given that it's just 299) makes it perfectly reasonable. I believe those spelling mistakes are the same as when it was first released, and it's not cost effective to remake the cover, as this is now priced cheaply...

same wth the VIVA Beauty and the Beast. The disc had disc 1 printed on it meaning there's a disc 2 for special features
-
Watched this today its seems all of the features printed even on the 2nd missing disc is all on one disc...VIP tour would be the guided tour? ::) meron din THX sound demo as stated

I just bought the 2-disc R3 70th anniversary platinum edition, big bang for the buck as it was sold for only P175 owing to a buy-1-take-1 promo! :D
