Title: Panasonic DMP-BD30 (Profile 1.1, Blu-ray player )
Post by: pchin on Nov 27, 2007 at 08:40 AM
Hardware Review: Panasonic DMP-BD30

Is the first Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player worth your high-def dollar? High-Def Digest reviewer Joshua Zyber puts Panasonic's DMP-BD30 player through its paces.

Hitting store shelves at an MSRP of $499.95, Panasonic's new DMP-BD30 is one of the more affordable Blu-ray players currently on the market, as well as the first to be compliant with the format's Profile 1.1 specification (more on this below). That makes for a pretty winning combination, but does it live up to its potential as a category killer?

The Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?
Each potential buyer will judge the importance of Blu-ray Profile 1.1 based on their own personal priorities. Previous Blu-ray models will continue to play all discs and traditional bonus features, so if you don't find support for interactive content all that important, this feature may not necessarily be a deal-breaker.

In any case, for the first Profile 1.1 compliant Blu-ray player, the Panasonic DMP-BD30 is a well-priced deal that offers excellent video quality on Blu-ray discs and the capability to bitstream advanced audio codecs to a compatible receiver (still a rare feature in Blu-ray players). On the other hand, it lacks the ability to decode those audio codecs internally as prior Panasonic models could, and has very poor deinterlacing and DVD upconversion quality. The BD30 isn't quite a perfect Blu-ray player, but it performs strongly in core areas and rates a worthy recommendation.

everything that has been said in Engadget and all the reviews about this player is true.  It really sends DTS-HD Master signals unlike the toshiba hd dvd players that only sends the core signal.  It's also a Dolby TrueHD player and damn that picture quality is top-notch i've seen.

Though there's no ethernet port like the toshiba hd dvd players, i've upgraded the firmware via DVD discs with a firmware update file on it.  It also has a 1080p via 24 frames per second, the way the film maker intended it to be shown.  Downside though, your display must be up to the challenge of receiving 1080p at 24 fps.

In short, this player is superb!

Are you sure you are getting a 7.1 input? That's not what the picture says. It says 5.1 input (6 bars on the left) and 7.1 output (8 bars on the right). Seems like the additional 2 channels are matrixed, not discrete.

I've never tried this myself and I understand there are very few titles with 7.1.

Not only is 'Hairspray' New Line's first-ever high-def title, but it has also provided me with a couple of thrilling personal home theater firsts. Not only have I finally upgraded my rig to support true DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio decoding, but New Line has produced a DTS-MA track for 'Hairspray' that's a full 7.1 channels to boot. As such, I was really ready to rev up my system and take it for a kick-ass ride, and even if 'Hairspray' is not a big action flick like 'Transformers,' it delivers its own brand of musical thrills that make excellent use of the full capabilities of multichannel high-res audio.

I guess it is 7.1 since it is also written on the packaging. I cannot answer why the input is only 5.1 ;D ;D ;D

Does this have an onboard DTS-HD decoder which can be outputted thru an HDMI connection or thru 5.1 analogue connection?

Hi sir, it can only decode internally  DTS (up to 1.5mbps) and dolby digital.   DTS-HD and dolby trueHD outputs thru bitstream to a compatible 1.3 receiver.  :)

I bought this for 400 dollars in December last year. Today, the featured Amazon seller has priced it at 750 dollars and availability in a few weeks! The cheapest price in Amazon is 479.  :o

There used to be maybe 8 or so sellers of this. Now there are only 3.

I wonder why.  ;D ;D ;D

simple law of economics....huge surge in demand, higher prices ;D ;D  maybe Toshiba can pitch in so there would be no shortage in supply in BD players......

Envisioned this kaya I got one right after the Warner announcement, got mine at $420.

hmmm cheapest 1080p BD player i've seen in Amazon is the Sharp Aquos one, $348, pero highly rated talaga ang BD30 @_@ well Toshiba was subsidizing its players hoping to capture the market, and they already said they won't get into HD players na @_@

Got mine at a low US$ 406 from 6th Avenue c/o Amazon ;D

I am contemplating in buying this player.  My dilemma though is the aftersales repair considering that I am going to order this from the States and have it shipped here.  What I've read is that it is easy now to have a PS3 repaired and the lens replaced if it wears out due to heavy use. If ever this Panny Blu ray player conks out or maybe have a lens problem, where can I have this fixed?

Dang they are so expensive here. I really dont know why electronics in the Philippines are so expensive/way overpriced. Most of the billionaires and millionaires in fortune magazine reside in the states!!! Ano ba!!! >:( ...Baka on their study/research there are more rich people here? ;D..Just check out car prices here compared to america. It's way overpriced also. Sa EBAY, 20k lang.. But I'm waiting for the BD50, $699.00 lang MSRP and probably much lower in actuality.  That's less than 35k compared to the Philippine version BD30 na 39k.

Iba din talaga to purchase dito sa pinas. Convenience purposes..With warranty, convenience, no waiting for it to arrive. Thats why I just wish they start pricing electronics lower. It's either their margins are so high or its expensive to bring it in or no volume so they maximize each sale. Nothing against those selling, I know they have to make money but imagine ( I read at other thread ) where the oppo 981 in rockwell is selling 18 k cash and 22 k ata at card? Im not sure, have to check it out. Thats ridiculous cash and card should be the same. 18k is about right but I think it should be lower pa bec I'm sure these sellers can bring it in cheaper and get better prices from dealers. Anyway maybe there is no volume (risk to bring in so much) so pa isa isa mabenta, thats why its priced like that, they just maximize their profit. Just my opinion.

First region free Blu-ray players available

Look no further for the follow-up to last year's multi-region Blu-ray players, with Bluraymods.com advertising a completely region free Panasonic DMP-BD30, available in either pre-modified or DIY kit formats. That's all 6 DVD regions and three Blu-ray regions for those keeping count, and it claims to still work with any firmware updates. The good news for import lovers is a price of €499, considerably less than previous hardware, or €69 for a mod kit. We're still not sure how well this will play with future DRM updates, but taking the leap appears to be getting cheaper and more convenient

Yup. I talked with Oliver of Listening Room Megamall. They have been using the S300 as a demo for 3-4 months. When they switched to the BD30 2 days ago, noticeable agad yung improvement the depth and clarity. Nanibago ang tingin sa mga flatscreen nila ;D  He has a Pana  PV70 and a Pana PY700 on display side by side.

Thanks to you all.

Anyway, i recently started to upgrade my HT ( decided to go Hidef..it's about time ) and ended up purchasing a 46w300 from S&S a few days ago. Since all I have are SDs and my old Toshiba player at 480i, the PQ took a dive. I ended up buying a dv400 from a fellow pdvd member for a quick fix while i decide what to get as my BD player.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about the BD30 ( from your posts ). Since i am yet to buy my first blu ray disc ( just rec'd TSA form from JAC ) and my collection are all SDs, what i am hoping to do is get the BD30 for blu rays and a separate upscaling/upconverting player for my SDs. From other posts, it seems like the Oppo 983 is a great player to have for SDs. Do these options sound just about right? Or should I just get the BD30 for both blu rays and SD playback?

Di pa ata nagkaroon na region free SD DVD na BD player... ::) ::) ::) Like all other BD players including the PS3, regular ang firmware updates for the BD-30. Firmwares prevent alterations/tampering. Ver. 1.8 firmware na po sa BD-30.

I think the Samsung BD1400 is region free. I saw it play several r3 disks for demo many months ago.

Hello all. I just joined pdvd end of May and I have to say...reading thru the threads has been most educational.
Thanks to you all.

I would have a separate player for SD playback. I would choose a oppo 980 (for value/performance), but I think for now your Pioneer 400 is pretty good na (especially you just bought it recently, sayang). If you have all the budget then go for the 983.. On the shootout the Pioneer 600 (same na sa 400 ) did pretty good on the actual video playback, but in my opinion the pioneer 600 is inconsistent in regards na on some movies I really notice it to be darker and hard to watch compared to other movies. I don't like adjusting contrast and brightness on this player depending on the movie. The 980 may be more consistent on the picture. I just wish we have more time during the shootout to test like 980 vs. pio 600 (The ones with the same price range) and see if its worth the upgrade to 980..For hidef, they have a promo now in amazon where you buy a ps3 40gig or Sony s300 (I would pick ps3 for value and completeness ), and you can purchase a starter kit with 8 discs at 80 dollars ata, thats 10 dollars a piece. Thats a great price na for bd discs to start your collection imo..Again if you have the cash, this panasonic is very nice. Cash is king talaga ;D..Good luck

That's good to know...at least the dv400 is not keeping me pa from watching movies. Anyway, just tried 983..i think temporarily sold out pa on oppo site.
I read your shootout results..interesting. Maybe I'll join you guys on your next shoot out. ( observer lang..hehe ) Nice HT pics there too.

I think BD30 is it for my BD player...since BD50 seems like it will cost a lot more hard earned money. It really depends how much more...it could be worth the wait.
Ok nga sana PS3..but I am not into games. Don't get me wrong..I enjoy them..too busy lang talaga. And I have enough music on the other gadgets. :-\

BD30 is simply great for blu-ray viewing.  This is true even for my 720p native resolution 50" TV.  PQ is not as good for SD DVD playback although this player is region free for SD DVD.

BD30 then for blu ray and DV400 in the meantime for my SD DVD...will just see which one of the two would perform better for SD DVD playback.

I recommend you do.   One quirk it has is the low level of bass output in uncompressed PCM audio.    Nasolve na ito sa 1.6.    Latest firmware though is 1.8.  ;)

My guess is your BD-30 is from H.K., so your region will be Oceana/Thai.S.E.Asia. Latest Firmware is Ver. 1.3. Dunno what will happen if you try updating with Ver 1.8 of North America & Latin America region. BD-30 w/ SD region free still available at Listening Room MegaMall. Look for Minnie.

Asian version kaya autovolt na rin sya.  It plays Region 1, 2, 3 DVDs and Region A blu-ray.  Most blu-ray discs are actually not region-locked but can be played in any blu-ray player I think.  rin

Hi Guys! ;D

I have a thread called "Going High Def," I'm sure you've seen it. I tried reading reviews online and I found this review that made me worry.... :-\
I own a Samsung LCD...

"This player does not work with Samsung LCD TV"
by jturnidge on January 22, 2008

Pros: JPEG and MP-3 playback
Cons: Does not work with Samsung LCD TV

Summary: This player had all the features I wanted, such as Blu-Ray 1.1 profile, JPEG and MP-3 playback, etc. except for one glaring problem: It does not work with my Samsung LCD TV.

The screen shows absolutely horrible screen flashing problems, image artifacts, sometimes dropping out completely and displaying snow or black screen. I have a Samsung LNT5271F LCD connected via HDMI. After some online research I found others with this same problem on Samsung LCD and Plasma sets. I tried 3 different players, different cables, different ports and they all had the same problem. Apparently the HDMI handshake drops out.

Be warned! If you have a Samsung flat panel TV, avoid yourself the hassle and get something else!

Is this true for all Samsung LCD's or just the specific LCD mentioned on the review? :-[
