Got a buzz that director Mike de Leon is doing some film restoration efforts on "Kisapmata" ('In Just the Wink of an Eye') and "Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag" ('Manila in the Claws of Light' - a Brocka film which he help produce) for DVD pressing.
What's yet to be known is if these DVDs are just for his personal film archive or for commercial release. I do hope that these films get to be available even in Limited Edition.
Hope we get more updates. :)

Here's an quote from director Quark Henares (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=5;action=viewprofile;user=quark) (Gamitan) regarding the upcoming Mike de Leon DVDs:
To mike de leon fans, i know maynila: sa kuko ng liwanag and kisapmata are being restored for a limited edition collectors boxed-set that might be released only through mail. i'll update you as they come :)
COOL, isn't it? 8) Better start saving up guys 'cause the future looks promising for Tagalog DVDs. :)

wow! this is great, especially for people like me who have limited knowledge on his brilliant contibution to Filipino cinema. i was able to catch the rather short-lived run of Bayaning Third World in theaters and i was mesmerized by his style of filmmaking.
hope this really pushes through...

Have been searching far and wide for videos or DVDs of films by Mike De Leon and other Filipino great directors (lino brocka, ishmael bernal, mario o hara, etc.) I may have sent hundreds of emails over the past year to all possible on-line sources of classic filipino films including UP film center, to no avail. i came upon your chat line and this particular subject of mike deleon. please include me in your list in notifying where i can purchase mike de leon's films. one of my want list is also "Itim" which I think was also directed by Mike De Leon. here is one classic, fine and superb filipino ghost story. below is my want list of classic filipino films. would appreciate referral to proper source to acquire these films.
1. Scorpio Nights (Peque Gallaga, 1985)
2. Init sa Magdamag ( Laurice Guillen, 1983)
3. Pagdating sa Dulo ( Ishmael Bernal, 1972)
4. Bagong Bayani ( Tikoy Aguiluz, 1995)
5. Babae sa Bubungang Lata (Mario O'Hara, 1998)
6. Pagputi ng Uwak, Pag-itim ng Tagak (Celso Ad. Castillo, 1978)
7. Manila By Night (Ishmael Bernal, 1980)
8. Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag (Lino Brocka, 1975)
9. Bagong Hari ( Mario O'Hara, 1986)
10. Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (Lino Brocka, 1974)
11. Kisapmata ( Mike De Leon, 1982)
12. Insiang (Lino Brocka, 1976)
13. Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos ( Mario O'Hara, 1976)
14. Itim (I think by Mike De Leon)
15. Oro Plata mata (Peque Gallaga)
......till then.

Hi True Talent, welcome to pinoyDVD! :)
Most of the titles you've mentioned are not yet available on DVD except for one: 'Scorpio Nights' has just been recently released by Regal Films (U.S.) Check out the " Complete List Of Pinoy Movies on DVD (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=755) " to see the other titles available.

thanks for the response. :)

Got a buzz that director Mike de Leon is doing some film restoration efforts ... for DVD pressing.

from the few scenes i saw while checking my BATCH '81 vcd for playback problems, this copy doesn't look like it has undergone restoration, by mike or by anybody else. since the vcd was released by viva, it might be that it was based on their copy of BATCH '81 that is shown on the viva channel. but that's just a hunch.
it's been awhile since this thread started to whet our appetite. does anyone have any update on mike's rumored restoration work for dvd?

If the promotional preview trailer that I saw was true-- and I sure hope that it was--Maynila sa Kuko will be part of a 4 disc DVD boxed set along with other classics from, if I remember correctly, Lamberto Avellana and Gerry de Leon. :o It's "coming soon" daw. How soon? Well... lets just cross our fingers.
Anyway, they showed short snippets from the films that are supposed to be included and they looked and sounded pretty clear. Again, lets cross our fingers...
-
where did you see this???
-
Manuel Silos directed "Biyaya ng Lupa" (1959) which won top honors at 1960 Asian Film Festival.
Why couldn't they make room for an Ishmael Bernal movie? Well, that's a good start...
-
The included films, I believe, are owned by LVN. Maynila was produced by Mike de Leon's outfit.

I'd also like an update on this... If ever, this will be my first Pinoy DVD.
-
Hey I wanna be notified of these things too! please include me in the mailing list...

Hi! I'm so glad I found this board. I've been wanting to have a copy of Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag, and have been looking everywhere--pero walang nangyari. I hope the DVD set will be out soon.
I'm sure some of you know this already (since it's old news), but isn't it such a great honor that a Lino Brocka film was not only included in the 150 best films of the 20th century (from Film: The Critics Choice (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=2X3ADTE04Z&isbn=0823017443&itm=2), edited by Geoff Andrew)--it was also included in a major critic's personal best list (from Century of Films: Derek Malcolm's Personal Best (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=2X3ADTE04Z&isbn=186064645X&itm=10), by Derek Malcolm)? It surely is.

Checked my inbox today and...
:o
I got a friggin reply!
-
RMN, anong reply niya?
May release date na ba?
-
Ok, here are excerpts from his e-mail:
the truth is i am all alone in this undertaking but i have certainly not given up.
the story behind this dvd thing is a long and complicated one, worthy of a feature, so i wont go into that. recently, less than a month ago, i tried something with kabayancentral.com, and if you have the time to look, i have put up titles (on vhs) that may possibly find a market there. the result is quite surprising, in spite of the disclaimer that the films are relatively unrestored. i did all of the work, including the writing (so please be kind with your comments), the restoration of the photos (because i think these films should be reintroduced, and therefore given a fair chance, they just cannot be released cold). Considering that they sell for $24.95 each. i think vcd or dvd may not be a remote possibility.
So, I guess, if we want to see Maynila sa Kuko on DVD, we have to somehow support him in one way or the other.
-
Thanks RMN.
To help spread the word about the VHS version available at Kabayan Central, click the url below. There's some pictures of Bembol and Hilda posted. Should we buy the video now or wait for the DVD? :)

-
I would buy both.
I posted that link already, in the Complete List Thread.
-
Any idea if we can get the VHS releases directly from LVN? Yoko sana gumamit ng credit card online e. Kung sakali, same price pa rin kaya?

Don't know. Someone will have to call LVN, I can't.

My mistake, my link goes to Pinoy superstore which doesn't carry em. The abovethread link is the correct one.
-
I doubt if those VHS titles are available direct from LVN (http://www.lvnpictures.com.ph).
-
Its sad to think that our classic movies are slowly missing and rotting in some bodega's. I have a big collection of Pinoy classic movies. My friend and I converted them into high quality DVD in dolby stereo sound. Here some of the list
Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag
Salome
Himala
Darna at ang babaeng tuod
Insiang
and more....
My movies are all original copies and with the new technology you can enhanced them and make your own DVD w/ covers. I just can't wait anymore for someone to act and save my favorite films.
-
If I may ask, these DVD's were copied from what source ? VHS? Betamax? Thanks :)
-
i have original VHS copies of the movies as in very clear.
-
i have original VHS copies of the movies as in very clear.
whoa! not that i am promoting piracy here but if your copies are really that clear, can we have an arrangement to have them transferred to dvd format. it's gonna be for personal consumption only.
-
I dont see it that way. My goal is to save my favorite movies and to preserve them for the next generation. I have a quite collection of pinoy movies from Charito Solis "Igorota'' Rita Gomez black and white movie. Drama like Insiang. Nora and Vilma old films. Fantasy movies like Dyesebel series, Darna, Zuma, Dabiana. Horror flicks like pagsapit ng dilim, Gumising ka Maruja, Shake Rattle and Roll, patayin mo sa sindak si barbara and more. some of my vhs are starting to have defects the only way to save them is to convert them to dvd and yes there is a new dvd burner that you can enhance the pictures and make it a dolby digital stero its the latest version of sony. I think its only illegal if you reproduce the movies and make money out it. my case, I'm doing it for art sake ;D

Hi reyoflight! Should you have any proposal of this sort in the future, kindly direct your message in private to the addressee.
We do not want to make a precedent. Hope you don't mind. :)
-
ok. i just did that.

Hi everyone!
I was checking out the Kabayan Online store (http://www.kabayancentral.com/index.html (http://www.kabayancentral.com/index.html)) and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience ordering from this site. I was tempted to go right ahead and order Maynila pero mukhang nag prevail ang caveat emptor for the meantime. I also found a DVD of the first scorpio nights that comes out to about 1300 if I order it from them (kahit na shipped to QC). I was wondering if anyone has seen this in DVD in the shops dito sa Manila and what price it sells for. I mean, if this is available sa brick and mortar at a much lower price, then better.
Yung Maynila comes out to about to almost 1500 for a VHS - do you think it would be ok to purchase the VHS from them?
By the way, thanks for the link, pinoymovies 8)
-
I'd like to hear how the transfer on the Scorpio Nights DVD is too.
They also are selling a widescreen VHS copy of Manuel Silos' Biyaya Ng Lupa for $24.99. Hefty price tag, but nice to hear that it's in widescreen.
-
This sounds too good to be true.
Any update on this?
-
fortunately, I own a widescreen vhs copy of Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag. it also includes a behind the scenes featurette Maynila: Isang Pelikulang Pilipino. ;)
-
How's the quality? Is the behind the scenes featurette any good? This must be the VHS produced by Mike de Leon. :)

The quality of the video is very good & the 30-minute behind the scenes featurette is really informative I just wished it could've been longer. I have no idea if this is the one produced by Mike de Leon but I haven't seen the movie in widescreen until now. :)

ito yung available dati sa kabayancentral.com di ba? just checked that website and the link is now inactive. may nakakaalam ba kung bakit?
-
Any updates? Its been years already.
Is there an online petition for the release of these films especially "Maynila" ? :'(
-
KISAPMATA dvd will be release soon. Its really a good news looking for this Mike de Leon masterpiece. Cinefilipino and Unitel Pictures are backing up more classic Pinoy films for dvd release in the near future.
-
Looking forward for the 'KISAPMATA' on dvd Keating. Vic Silayan's portrayal in the movie was one of the most unnerving acting ever in local movie history.
-
Check out also Vic Silayan in ITIM. Saw some snipettes on the making, it certainly deserves a dvd treatment.
-
Vic Silayan was in Itim? Or were you muddled up with Mario Montenegro?
-
Sorry wedge, yeah my mistake.
-
unitel/cinefilipino or whoever releases local film classics should follow what criterion is doing. restore the master negatives of the classics first, if they still exist. what they usually do here kasi is transfer the exisiting positive directly to video. minsan pa nga vhs/umatic to vcd/dvd na lang. kaya madumi pa rin ang video at audiio, di pa widescreen.
the problem is, it costs a lot ot money to restore old films, with all the color-correcting of video and the remastering of audio. hay, nakakainggit ang catalogue ng criterion.
pero ang impt ngayon, kahit vcd format basta magkarun ng kopya. para hindi sa cable lang napapanood.

As much as I agree with you, I have to say:
That's never gonna happen.
They wouldn't have the budget for it, and DVD sales wouldn't be enough for them to turn a profit.
That's really the bottom line, sadly. :(
-
As far as I know, Star Cinema has only the cable rights for the 4 ECP films (Oro Plata Mata, Himala, Misteryo sa Tuwa & Soltero).
The dvd release will never materialize. Only if Peque can get the masterprint, he will surely release it on dvd.

One solution to that is tap into the INTERNATIONAL market. I'm pretty sure there are enough cinephiles all over the world who'll wish to check out the classics of Filipino cinema.

Looks like Star Video is "slowly but surely" releasing ECP films on DVD, 2 more to go... hopefully all within this year. ;D
