hmm there's really no need for an external cooling system, just follow the ventilation rule of at least 1 feet of open space from the vents and its ok, been playing in my sauna like room, ok pa rin siya ^_^

Maybe if the unit is the asian version, it is already  tropicalized and adjusted to higher temp, hence cooling is not really needed anymore.  But if the unit is us version, better cool it off just to be safe.

If you play your unit in a cooling area e.g. inside an aircon room, that will help a lot.

people kinda over react to the heat being exhausted by the ps3 my compadre even advised me to placed a fan to cool it off but id rather not coz i trust the system can withstand heat becoz its built that way otherwise sony would have recallede all their ps3 units.

(Parang Kotse) I believe consumer electronics design are based on Normal Room condition (27 deg.C).  I have my experienced with reliability testing. There is a difference on life expectancy when it comes to heat. You can check your PS3 at the back after playing 30 minutes and feel the heat, how much more on the surface? Just my opinion. BTW, my PS3 has 2years warranty and guaranteed money back once it fails for whatever problem occur. ;D

I just place mine in an open rack. Ya aircon room will help a lot. I can tell you guys na ps3 is built way tougher than the orig xbox360, but I think they still have that lens problem..Out of topic: My 360 already died an not repairable daw.. :(..Bad trip but they say the falcon chip is better than the previous, not much 3rl daw..I don't know if I want to invest another 20 grand on a 360. I would rather buy a BD standalone player, or another ps3. However, I like the 360 bec of the downloaded games available in xboxlive like ms pacman, digdug, etc. I like those old arcade games hehe..

My Xbox360 also died last January. I dont want to buy another XBOX360 anymore.

The lens are causes of most defective PS3. I have a friend who bought his PS3 is HK, less than 14T. But when its defective.

What are the main reason that PS3 lens conk out? Is it due to extreme heat, overuse by watching DVD/blu-ray, etc?

Or just by pure bad luck? :-[

Pchin, you might wanna check this out in pinoypsx. However, its mostly in tagalog..I haven't read the whole thread, but I think there is really some problem with the lens on some models.

Tnx Moks007 for the link. I'm having a hard time reading & understanding the contents kc in Tagalog... ;D

From a few posts, I gather the following reasons:

-Most defective units are the PS3 80Gb.
-Overheat due to long hours of play
-Shut off the PS3 w/out following proper procedure

Guess we'll have to take some precautions. Prevention is better than cure.  ;D

Hi indie boi sori, hehe..Did not proofread my message. ya sound confusing hehe.. Mine was the early version chip, not the falcon. I meant they said "the falcon chip is more durable than the earlier version chips, not much 3rl daw."  Im still thinking if I should shell out 20 grand again for another 360 with the falcon chip, bec I like those early arcade games that you can download via xboxlive.  :) My problem now is I have an hddvd addon that is just sitting there with no 360 to play it on :(..

By the way there is another new chip ata coming this Aug or Sept ata. Forgot what its called.

Post by: indie boi on Apr 22, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Ah ok, hehe. Kala ko Falcon chip na and you still got the 3RL.

Not that I'm a 360 supporter. :) That's one console I won't touch. I just don't like the 33% failure rate. With that amount of money I'd like to get a unit that's at least durable and not conk out on me after three months.

Are the Falcon 360's more reliable ba?

On topic: Do you think those clip-on coolers are a good buy? I'm planning to get one (the cooler that clips on to the side of PS3) but I'm not sure if it will actually help in cooling down the unit.

Sorry for my late reply. BEST BUY but you have to pay for it (extended warranty). But the deal is: if your unit didn't last for 2 years NO question ask (that is on the written deal) they will not ask to return your unit but instead ask you where to send your money. It's applicable for International.

Ya the experience I had with the 360 was a total nightmare. The first year was ok, but once it 3rl'd on ya, thats it..its a never ending nightmare >:(..Up to the point its unrepairable. However the arcade games that you can download via those point cards in xbox live is magnificent. It really beats the ps3 to me.

Anyway they say the falcon chip is better. Smaller and more reliable. EYO people in greenhills told me the falcons are better, and people are not experiencing 3rl on this. I would still wait for more testimonies by people owning this falcon that yes its quite full proof after two years of abuse in gaming ;D

If I were you I wouldn't use those cooling fans for your ps3 bec you never know what will happen. Sometimes its better leaving your unit alone. Also, there are a lot of cases people just sometimes leave their discs inside their unit and just turn off their unit. I think maybe this is one of the reason their ps3 are conking out. Anyway thats just me, I don't like to use those accesories but maybe you can ask around if these fans really work well and will not damage your unit. Problem is sometimes the after effects will happen after one year or even more.

pchin, jiggs84, kt & JAQY888. My initial review on the cooling Fan is really cool! ;D 5 exhaust fan 1 Big on the Side and 2 medium + 2 small at the back with speed control it's really cool, one more thing they are also Auto Volt 100-230V.
The main switch at the back is relocated on th front very cool!
4 hours total for game & movie still really cool at 50% fan speed. This is a very good accessory for our PS3 no wonder out of stock sa Best Buy palagi.
Price: US$29.99 + tax = 32.46 ;D

The only disadvantage is: If you accidentaly switch off the main switch at the front before you standby the system (improper shutdown :P)

Maybe, another reason for the item being "out of stock" always is the "cool" price tag !!! :D :D :D
Congrats for being one of the 1st PS3 owners which uses this accessory.  ;D

That's my primary concern..the fan noise.  :-\

Heard quote a number of negative feedbacks pointing to the fan noise.  :-[

But would operating at 50% of the fan full speed help in lowering the noise?

Post by: steelcrazy on May 14, 2008 at 07:44 PM
The ps3 has its limits there's really no need for those extra cooling gadgets. I would recoommend placing ur ps3 on an aluminum plate so it can absorb the heat being released by the ps3. Just keep ur ps3 well ventilated.

guys, external cooling device like this is useless for the PS3, there is no overheating problem, just keep it well ventilated ok na ^_^
Title: Re: Cooling your PS3
Post by: odyopayl on May 15, 2008 at 07:50 AM
50% fan speed noise is negligible (for me) especially if you are watching thru your HT set-up. I usually use it 80% gaming ang just 20% movie since I have a dedicated BD player. I always play overtime usually min. 4 hours up to 8 hours usually mga pamangkin ko they want to play also. Just to keep me less worry about overheating. We can also test my system right? Lets check kung tatagal nga siya. I have my experience with heating-up, I neglect them and they only last less than their expected life (This is from my other system AMP)

Our computer, subukan mo tanggalin ang Fan, masisira sila kaagad. Solidstate like IC they heat-up so fast especially processor they are composed of millions transistor inside, they seems tolerable outside but not on the surface. Failure Analysis is part of my Job I need to do something to prevent it. :D

Putting alluminum underneath might not help since the heat transfer will be coming from plastic. Proper ventilation and keep your room around  25 deg.C might also help. It's cheap why not? less worries diba?

ako since i got 3FAN inside my computer unit (TOWER) i removed one of them which is need supply na 12voltz so i bought an extra adapter, then cut off the end AC connector, then attach it to other end of my exhaust fan, and PRESTO! i have little helping cooling system, even the unit was turned off, the fan can still help disperse heat from my unit. o diba,!!! iDEA mind!!. hehe, since hirap din mag hanap ng mga ganyan..hehe..tipid in a way na ok din!

I have the Asian PS3, and I must say the PS3 stays cold, even after hours of use.
Maybe there's a difference between the Asian version and the US version, related to internal cooling?
