Title: NEW Star Wars Trilogy DVD box sets (11/4)
Post by: Mouldingo on Aug 24, 2008 at 09:59 AM
And yes... here's a surprise: As you can see, we've also posted cover art for yet another new re-issue of the Star Wars films on DVD, specifically two new Star Wars Trilogy DVD box sets, due on 11/4 (SRP $49.98 each). Each is apparently a 6-disc set, with two discs per film. We're waiting on official details. This is NOT the ultimate release we've all been waiting for, and no Blu-ray editions are currently planned, but it's possible that these discs MAY include some new special features. We'll try to get an update for you on that point as soon as possible.

Hindi kaya yung IV V VI is yung 2-disc versions just repackaged? Let's hope not. The old versions weren't anamorphic and only had 2.0 sound.

(LATE UPDATE - 8/22/08 - 3 PM PDT)

Okay... two last things today: First of all, we've confirmed with 20th Century Fox that the new Star Wars Trilogy DVD box sets are just re-packs of the previously released 2-disc sets (in the case of the Prequel set) and presumably the recent Original Trilogy 2-disc DVDs that had both the SE versions and the non-anamorphic original theatrical versions of the films. The key point is: THERE'S NO NEW CONTENT. So be advised and spread the word. By the way, special thanks to our good friend T-Bone for bring these new DVDs to our attention this morning.

Update!

I heard from someone that in the Clone Wars Bluray Special Features, there's a featurette where scenes from the OT and PT were featured in HD!

So we know that there are scenes that they already transfered to Hi Def!

I was tempted to get the new Prequel box sets since I don't have the Prequels on DVD yet. But after hearing this news, I'm waiting for the Bluray! :)

Does anyone have this yet?

I want to get the original trilogy set but I'm not sure if Return of the Jedi has that scene in the end with Hayden whats-his-face digitally inserted to replace that old actor. If it does, I'm not getting this.

I think this is just the repackaged trilogy that was released a few years back, the one where they included the original letterbox and 2004 dvd versions.

Uhm pero hindi ba ito ang first time na na-release sa Pinas ang original theatrical movies? kasi yung 2004 box set lang ata ang naging available dito di ba?

'yung "first" theatrical versions of the original trilogy was released here in the Philippines. Although in BetaMax and early VHS releases. 'di ko lang po alam kung sa LD ay meron 'din.

In case of a DVD release, nope. 'di po nai-release dito sa atin (R3 - Imported/International). 'yung tinda po sa Planet X ay R1 - USA. Hindi po ito Asian or Local release (Nag-order/import po sila thru Diamond Distibutors, most likely. I'm 95% sure on that since primarily, comic book shop naman ang Planet X.)

The 1997 special editions was also released in a boxed set of VHS and VCDs.

The "new" sets are just collection with little or almost no new bonus content included (Check the Amazon Reviews).

The Original and Special Editions was also released before as a set collected in a Limited Edition Tin Case (Look up sa post ni Mr. Xage). R1 & R2 nga lang. I'm not that sure kung sa Japan ay lumabas din po ito.

If any of you guys are waiting for a Blu-Ray release of the whole movie series, Baka 'di pa mangyari 'yun in the near future.
In an issue of DVD Magazine (UK Magazine po ito. The issue was from 2005 pa po. I can't remember the cover date. Hanapin ko mamaya).
Mr. Lucas said that he is waiting for a much more superior format (HVD, Mr. Lucas?) to release the whole series as a boxed set.

It is also noted in a lot of fan sites sa 'net na Mr. Lucas is planning for a complete overhaul of the special effects for the whole series.
He wants it to be as realistic as possible. So, ayun; Panibagong "Special Editions" na naman po - Making the puppet yodas from Episodes 1,4,5 & 6 into CGI. Also, adding the deleted scenes back into the movies; Yoda's arrival on Dagobah, The murder of Shaak Ti, Making Han shoots Greedo first again. Plus also making the SFX of all six episodes equal/on par with each other.

May OCB/OCD si Mr. Lucas 'ata kasi. Hehe!  ;D

That would totally suck the charm out of the original trilogy  >:(

Oo nga, eh. Kaso George is really obsessed in making the Star Wars saga as "perfect" as he can. 'di s'ya ma-satisfy, eh. Alam n'yo naman ang mga artist.  ;)

Also, sabi dun sa DVD Magazine (Ang name po ng mag ay "DVD"), George wants to make the whole series in 3D. Not CGI/3D animated ala Pixar movies/Star Wars: Clone Wars, kung 'di "in 3D." iMAX-Type of cinematic experience. So, ayun. Plus pa 'yung Live-Action TV Series to debut sometime in 2010/2011 that is set between Episodes 3 & 4. Makikita natin 'yung "Rise of the Rebellion" pati -Sana! Please, Mr. Lucas!- ang pag-hunt ni Vader sa mga rogue Jedi. The ones who escaped Order 66! :o

Some of the stories between episodes 3 & 4 have already been told in the recent Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game, which is already considered canon. While the game had its flaws, the story was excellent, and many have said they should've made a movie about it instead, and not the crappy Clone Wars.

I've read the Official Graphic Novel of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed published by Dark Horse. It's a nice pass time read.

Ang Lucasfilm talaga "medyo" mahilig mang-mislead ng fans. They say that SW:TFU is set in the "official" continuity. But one of Lucasfilm's representative said in an interview in ToyFare (published by Wizard) that any story in the expanded universe -meaning any story that appeared in comics, novels, short prose, video games- are not canon since they are not public knowledge: Only themes that appeared or have been given reference in the movies are considered canon by George and his posse. ??? >:( :( (But hooray for Jedi Master Quinlan Vos. Binanggit kasi s'ya ni Obi-Wan sa Episode 3.  :D)

Kaya after ko mabasa 'yun, I felt a wee bit betrayed for buying all the comic books and assorted story stuff na hindi naman pala nila considered official. So, kahit may seal pa ng LucasBooks, LucasArts or anything, it's just a stamp of approval as an officially licensed product. Not a part of the continuity which are the Star Wars movies plus the TV Series (Pwera lang ang Star Wars: Holiday Special at Star Wars Muppets episode. Hehe  :-X).  >:(  :(

So kahit naipakita na ang pagpatay ni Vader sa ibang mga rogue Jedi sa Star Wars: Purge (an awesome comic book by Dark Horse), non-canon parin kasi wala pa sa public knowledge, kung maipapalabas ito sa movie or at least TV series, dun pa lang magiging official.  >:(  :(

Ka-bad trip kasi ang laki na ng nagagastos ng fans sa pagsunod sa saga tapos 'di pala canon, 'di pa official. Lucasfilm only see comic books, novels, video games, short proses as ancillary products; Products licensed to legally earn them & to maximize money by capitalizing on the movie and brand just like toys, pajamas and assorted Star Wars themed items. >:(  :(

Buti nga sinabi nila 'yun, eh. Nakatipid na tuloy ako simula nun.  ;D

Also: Yup. Clone Wars SUCKED big time. The characters are "out of characters," and plot holes a many.   ??? >:( :( >:(

Have you watched the New Clone Wars TV series? Set right after the Clone Wars movie?

Download it, may 13 episodes na. :)

I've seen it. Have you seen it? You said, "People have been raving at how good the series is getting," so I'll assume that you haven't seen it yet. Well IMHO, the good part of it is the first episode. Yoda and a handful of troopers VS Asajj and her droids.

It's still too kiddie-fied for my taste and I assume our pal jazzeon would find it silly because it follows right after the Clone Wars movie not just in story, setting but in atmosphere as well. Especially, the episode where Annie & Obi "team-up" with Dooku. It's a slapstick-styled a bit ala 3 Stooges. The scene where they try to escape and were chained together. I mean, why try to make humor when the story you are telling is set in an intergalactic civil war? Intergalactic or not, it's still war! There's no humor in it. I'm not saying they should tell it vein of Platoon or Saving Private Ryan but at least drive it in a more serious tone just like in Empire Strikes Back or Revenge of the Sith.

The defenitive take on Clone Wars is still the Genndy Tartakovsky directed Micro Series, Star Wars: Clone Wars showed a few years back in Cartoon Network and is now available on DVD.

 ;)

Yep i've seen it. :) I download it every week. I really like it though. Probably a die hard fan like me can't resist anything Star Wars.. :) I mean if you have a life size Stormtrooper armor in your house and Star Wars tattoos all over your body, you're anything but a normal fan, hahaha!

But yeah, I actually watch the Clone Wars religiously just to see if I get blown away by an episode or two. I'm just happy there's something Star Wars out now, even though it may not be their best. :)

Wow, sir. I'm really surprised by your answer. You have Star Wars tattz? Amazing! You're really not a normal fan. :D

I have a few Star Wars collections of my own. But I limit myself to just DVDs, toys and other displayable goodies. And someday, I'll buy myself too a life-size goods of Darth Vader and the likes.

I used to buy comics and other story related stuff but as I've posted above, they are not worth it since they are not "G-Canon." Pera-pera lang para kay manong George at sa mga bataan n'ya. Let's not be duped in to giving away our hard earned money. ;)

I've seen the 3D Clone Wars series at a friend's house because he likes to download everything. I don't download because I think it's not fair. I mean, I'll just wait for it to be on cable broadcast. I use torrent too but just for porn and really really hard to find movies! Hehehe!

The Clone Wars TV Series will debut in our local Cartoon Network this February, 2009.

And i have to admit, i'm not a normal Star Wars fan. And The Clone Wars TV series is awesome! It's as good as the Genndy Tartakovsky micro series.

okay, that''s enough veering off-topic...

Can anyone post pics of these repackaged Star Wars trilogy sets, particularly the inside and disc art, if any? And there's really no bonus content and extra features, just the bare bones movies? I never had the Star Wars films on DVD, so I have no basis for comparison with the older sets.
