Tentative pricing: $499 to $699

@blued888, thanks for the info and link :D
More info (specs) about this player ... although still unofficial as the OPPO website makes no mention about this player (yet) ;D
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii48/JAQY888/e3ff8ba6.jpg)
QUOTE:
The unit will have the same DVDO processing chipset as found in the new DVDO Edge (VRS by Anchor Bay). It will have 7.1 analogue outputs, HDMI 1.3 (with support for native decoding for DTS HD and Dolby Digital Plus/TrueHD), and will upscale DVDs to 1080p. It even supports 24p output. Based on the chassis markings, BD Live 2.0 support (via 10/100 Mbps Ethernet) is included out of the box and USB connectivity is provided for photos and music playback. Dedicated analogue stereo outputs are also present and the unit has IR control in/out connections ("for Oppo approved connections only"). No RS-232C control is present. Perhaps most surprising (in a pleasant way) is SACD support as well as compatibility with HDCD's. Coaxial & S/PDIF outputs are present for legacy audio, including Dolby Digital and DTS.
While Oppo isn't releasing any pricing information we can't imagine this unit being competitive unless it is priced at $499 or less given the competition on the market from such companies as Sony, LG, Panasonic and others.

wow, its a bit expensive at $699. if they do include the vrs chip by abt.... then price it at $499. 983+bd. pwede na? :-[ :-[ :-[

One thing I notice about oppo is that they don't seem to lower their prices, Sobra "astig" maybe sila. The prices of their dvd players are not even coming down, some BD players are cheaper already..At 699, forget it, wait for it to be 399 or lower, maybe ten years from now pa ;D

Guess Oppo is not so much on the form factor but on functionality.

It's not that Oppo's BDP-83 is completely unexpected or anything, but this marks the first time the company is publicly admitting that the device is more than a show floor spectacle. Oppo has created a placeholder for the BD deck in order to give prospective buyers a chance to be notified of the unit's release. Unfortunately, all that we're given to chew on now is a pair of high-res images, so feel free to jump past the break and peek the other if the one above just isn't doing it for you. C'mon Oppo -- drop this puppy for under $150 and make yourself some new friends.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Disc Player Update
Dear *********,
Thank you for signing up to receive information about our upcoming OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. We appreciate your interest, and would like to update you on the current development status of this exciting new product.
One of the major design goals for the BDP-83 is to deliver first-class video quality for both Blu-ray and DVD. We based and expanded upon our top-of-the-line DV-983H up-converting DVD player and fully utilize the unparalleled performance of the VRS by Anchor Bay video processing solution. You can expect all the high-end video features including Source Direct for DVD and Blu-ray, high definition HDMI scaling, Edge and Detail Enhancement options, and 1080p24Hz output for both Blu-ray and DVD.
We did not stop at just video performance. We further refined the audio stage, including the addition of discrete stereo outputs and increasing the power and efficiency of the power supply. For SACD playback, the BDP-83 supports direct DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion, a very unique feature.
With the BDP-83, we intend to release a full-featured universal Blu-ray Disc player that supports BD Profile 2.0 (BD-Live), DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. As of this writing, the BDP-83 supports BD Profile 1.1 (BONUSVIEW), DVD-Video, SACD, and bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Progress is being made on a daily basis as our engineers work diligently around the clock to further enable DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio onboard decoding, and BD Profile 2.0.
The BDP-83 is currently undergoing an extensive and thorough Beta Test Program. We greatly appreciate all the feedback from our beta testers, as without their hard work and extraordinary attention to detail, the BDP-83 would not be the high quality product that our customers have come to expect from us.
As many of our customers eagerly anticipate the release of the BDP83, we are contemplating a "BDP-83 Early Adoption Program" in late December or early January. This program will make available a limited number of units so you can purchase and experience the current implementation of the BDP-83's feature set, with the ability to download firmware as new features become available. The estimated price for the BDP-83 is around $499 to $599.
OPPO Digital is a consumer-oriented company that listens carefully to customer opinions and values their feedback. If it were not for our customers' feedback and support, OPPO would not be where we are today. At OPPO we strive to provide our customers with quality products reinforced by exceptional customer service.
Please email to [email protected] if you have any questions and comments, or simply reply to this email.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Player Early Adoption Program
Dear ***,
We would like to thank you for the tremendous feedback that we have received from the community in response to our first BDP-83 Blu-ray player notification update. There were many great comments, suggestions and concerns which we will try to address in the release of the BDP-83. In particular, we would like to address the Early Adoption Program.
We have decided to take a democratic, by-the-people approach to the implementation of the Early Adoption Program. For the initial batch we will randomly choose 50 customers to participate in the Early Adoption Program. These 50 customers will have the opportunity to purchase the BDP-83 for $499 before the official release. After using the player for about a week, they will be required to vote on whether the program should be expanded or suspended based on end-user experiences. If a supermajority (at least 70%) votes in favor of expanding the program, we will expand the Early Adoption Program by another 100 randomly chosen customers. The player will be shipped with a pre-production firmware version. Firmware updates will be available from time to time.
The initial 50 Early Adoption Customers will be chosen no later than February 25th using the random number generator at random.org. After being contacted by us, the customer must place the order no later than 3pm February 27th Pacific Time; otherwise the opportunity to participate will be passed on to another customer. A simple "Yes" or "No" vote on whether to expand the program needs to be cast no later than March 15th.
Terms and conditions for the Early Adoption Program, as well as the current program status, can be found at our web site:
http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-83/EAP.aspx
We would also like to take this time to update you on the status of BDP-83 developments. The last two months have been very fruitful, as the player now supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0) and can internally decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. DVD-Audio has yet to be implemented through firmware, but we are working diligently on this feature. A preliminary features and specifications list will be available on our web site on Tuesday March 3rd.
Opt-Out:
If you are still interested in receiving communications about the BDP-83 and participating in the Early Adoption Program, no further action is necessary. Otherwise, please click on the SafeUnsubscribe link below to decline participation and to opt out of any further e-mail communications regarding the BDP-83.
Best Regards, Customer Service

Preliminary Features (Subject to Change)
Complete Media Support:
* Blu-ray Disc – The high definition Blu-ray Disc™ format provides pristine video and audio quality for your home entertainment.
* BonusVIEW – BD "Profile 1.1" enables "picture-in-picture" and secondary audio features for viewing director or actor commentary while the main movie is playing.
* BD-Live™ – The BDP-83 support BD "Profile 2.0" and contains all necessary hardware – audio/video decoder, Ethernet port, and 1GB of internal storage – for BD-Live.
* DVD Up-Conversion – The BDP-83 uses the same VRS™ by Anchor Bay (DVDO) de-interlacing and scaling technology as in our award-winning DV-983H DVD player. The up-converted picture quality bridges the visual gap from your current DVD library to Blu-ray discs.
* SACD – The BDP-83 plays Super Audio CD (SACD) and supports both stereo and multi-channel high resolution audio programs. Users can select whether to output the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) signal in its native format or convert it into PCM.
* Additional Media Formats – Additional disc and file formats, such as audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, AVCHD, MKV, and other audio/video/picture files on recorded discs or USB drives can be played back on the BDP-83.
Unparallel Video Quality:
* VRS™ by Anchor Bay – The BDP-83 incorporates Anchor Bay’s award-winning Video Reference Series (VRS) technology, and delivers a picture that is cleaner, smoother, true-to-life and free of artifacts.
* Full HD 1080p Output – The BDP-83 features user selectable video output resolutions, including 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and up to 1080p 50 or 60Hz.
* True 24p™ Video – Many Blu-ray Discs are recorded at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate as the original movie’s theatrical release. The BDP-83 can faithfully redeliver the original frames using 1080p 24Hz output (compatible display required) for smoother motion and a flicker-free, film-like home theater experience. It can also restore the original 24 frames per second progressive-scan video from well-authored DVDs and output as 1080p 24Hz.
* Source Direct Mode – For users who wish to use an external video processor, high-end audio/video receiver or display, the BDP-83 offers a "Source Direct" mode. The original audio/video content on the discs is sent out with no additional processing or alternation.
* HDMI – HDMI is an all digital interface for the cleanest possible connection. It delivers high-quality digital video and audio through a single cable. The BDP-83 features an HDMI v1.3 output with 30-bit and 36-bit Deep Color support.
High Fidelity Audio:
* Dolby® TrueHD - Dolby TrueHD delivers lossless studio master quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment. The BDP-83 supports bit-stream output of Dolby TrueHD via its HDMI 1.3 output. It can also internally decode Dolby TrueHD into LPCM and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. Other varieties of Dolby Digital audio formats are also supported.
* DTS®-HD - DTS-HD delivers up to 7.1 channels of surround sound and audio that is indistinguishable from (DTS-HD High Resolution) or identical to (DTS-HD Master Audio) the original studio master. The BDP-83 supports bit-stream output and internal decoding of DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other varieties of DTS audio formats are also supported.
* 7.1-Channel Analog Output - Individual analog 7.1-channel surround outputs are ideal to connect to a 7.1-channel or 5.1-channel surround sound system. The BDP-83 delivers an incredible sound stage and an immersive surround experience.
* Dedicated Stereo Output – The BDP-83 features a dedicated 2-channel analog output with specially optimized Digital-to-Analog Converters and output driving stage.
* Digital Optical and Coaxial Outputs – For simple and easy connection to more traditional A/V receivers, the BDP-83 features both optical and coaxial outputs for digital audio.
Ultimate Convenience:
* Dual USB Ports – Two USB 2.0 high speed ports are provided, one on the front panel and one on the back. Users can enjoy high definition video, high resolution photos and music directly from their USB drives.
* PAL/NTSC Conversion – The BDP-83 supports NTSC and PAL systems for both disc playback and video output. It can also convert content of one system for output in another. (Subject to DVD and BD region restrictions)
* Back-lit Remote Control – The BDP-83 comes with a fully back-lit remote control for ease of use in dark home theaters. With its ergonomic button layout and clear labeling, operating the Blu-ray Disc player is easier than ever.
* Universal Power Supply – The BDP-83 features a wide range world power supply that is compatible with the AC power of all regions. No worries about damaging the player due to incorrect power voltage.
* External IR – For integration into home theater control systems, the BDP-83 provides external IR remote IN and OUT ports

If DVD playback of this player is as good as my OPPO 983 and BD playback is as good or better than my PANASONIC BD 30, I might go with this and sell both my OPPO 983 and PANA BD 30..

One of the reasons why I might not be buying this player:
From one of the 50 Early Adoption Programs of OPPO BDP-83:
Is the player locked for Blu-ray and DVD regions?
Yes: Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.
Can it be made region-free for Blu-ray?
No.
Can it be made region-free for DVD?
No.
What is the point of having PAL support if the player is locked to region 1?
It will play PAL (and NTSC) DVD region 0 discs. Region 0 means "all regions".
Where do I get region 0 discs?
Backup software that removes CSS copy protection will set the DVD region code to 0.
See the wiki article on regional lockout.
Will OPPO Digital create versions of this player for markets outside of North America?
No, according to email from OPPO Digital:
Our player is being designed for North America, which is DVD Region 1 and Blu-ray Region A compliant. We have no plans selling these units internationally or allowing the end user to adjust any regional controls.
For all information related to a European BDP-83, we would recommend contacting OPPO.SE ([email protected]).
See Where can I buy non-Region A/1 versions of this player?
Why won't OPPO Digital allow region unlocking for DVD?
OPPO Digital has said:
The Blu-ray Disc Association does not allow us to support any region unlocking capabilities, even for DVD-Video playback.
The people who own the technology, who write the contracts specifying how you may and may not use their property, will not allow region-free playback. If OPPO Digital were to violate those contracts they would be subject to legal action.
Why would the BDA care about DVD playback? No one has told me, so I can only speculate. Studio members of the BDA still make DVDs and still want their region coding enforced. This is an opportunity for them to enforce their rights
-
Would the locked Region A coding considered a big deal regarding playback of original or licensed materials available in the local market? Isn't it that Asia and US have the same regional coding for BD's?
-
I've already ordered this player earlier today since i was one of those lucky 2nd wave eap participant. I am gonna test this as soon as it arrives, for my eyes is still set on getting the 09FD for the living room.

Finally got my Oppo unit. That was almost 2 weeks of torture waiting for this player. Here are the pics so far that i have taken.

Initial testing was done using Elite PRO151FD, Elite SC-09TX, Definitive Mythos ST, Def Tech BP2X and Def tech Mythos 10 for center. I was impressed the way oppo ship this item. There packaging was very good compare to other manufacturers. After i removed the unit from the box, initial set up was a breeze. First thing i did was play my SA audio Miles Davis, i have been reading on what set up to use if playing SA Audio and i followed them. All i can say is that audio is superb to say the least. Same goes for DVD-Audio. The only problem that i have with the DVD-Audio was i cant bitstream it. I have to use LCPM for it to work properly. But I guess that is to be expected because it was a known issue. After changing it to LCPM everything works perfectly. Af far as playing BD movies, i have tried Dark Knight and Bolt. With Dark Knight i was amazed at the depth and the 3 dimentional look that it gave me. I am not exaggerating about the picture quality that i got from oppo coz i use to have the BDP5000 from samsung which is a no slouch in picture quality department. With Bolt, all i can say is WOW. Unbelievable to say the least. I have also tried a couple of SD DVD and SuperBit. And all the rave about the upconverting capabilities of the 983 oppo is no lie coz it mimics everything that the 983 had. Picture was phenomenal. Gladiator was used first as my intial sd dvd, my friend though that he was watching it on hd because of how the picture looks. I will test it more within the next few days. If my initial impression is any indication, there is no doubt that i will vote yes. But before i do vote, i will surely take my time and test this player as extensive as i can. Being able to be in the EAP gave me the opportunity to experience a universal player that is almost perfect and will not break your wallet. As my friend said when he saw me playing with the oppo. " I sure wish my elite BDP-09FD plays DVD-A and SACD"

NICE! :o :o :o
is it now available in the market? ::) ::) ::)

WOW !!! AFAIK, you are the first pdvd member to get hold of this BD player.
Will be awaiting more feedbacks from you regarding this player ..... Congratz !!!!! (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy112.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org)

Thank you, yes i was one of the 2nd batch EAP, i was lucky enough to be chosen to participate in there eap. During my testing, there are 2 problems that i have encountered so far. SuperBit Zorro freezed the first time i tried to play it. After i removed the movie and insert it again it played fine. Also once i got home and unpacked the unit. The remote was not working even though it was working when i tested it out earlier. I unplugged the unit and remove the battery of the remote and put it back in, the result was the same. Remote was not working. Finally i took a spare double A battery and replace the one that came with oppo and walla. The remote worked again, i just find it weird why it happen but hey now its working again. I have tried to play Superman Doomsday SD DVD and the upconverting was better than my A35 and BDP5000. Continued to watch some more SD like Myth and the First Drunken Master. The last time i watch this was with my BDP5000, i thought it looked good already but the BDP83 made it better. For an old movie to look this good, i guess the power of the VRS chip from oppo is really flexing its muscle. I have more movies to test both BD and SD before i can finally say yes when i vote.
Like i said earlier, i am happy that i was chosen and given the opportunity to own there soon to be player in the market. PinoyDVD will surely here from me again after some more testing =)
I decided to play some more movies but unfortunately the remote is not responding again, so i tried the battery trick that i did earlier but alas no avail. So i unplugged the unit and wait for like a minute and then it worked. I called oppo about this and ask to why is this happening. The guy that i spoke to said it could be the remote, coz we tried a couple of ways to sync the remote. But since the remote is functioning again he told me to call them back again if the problem arise again so that they can replace my remote.

Nice preview & congrat SirLaw11 for being among the first to own this gorgeous player!

Anybody have info on this?

Guys, have you seen Oppo's product (players) line in their website? Only the the DV-980H is now available and the soon to release BDP-83. They've taken out the DV-981HD and DV-983H. Any news how much would be the official selling price for the BDP-83? I guess its almost the same with the 983, which is problably the reason why they've taken it out?
-
$599 SRP. $499 for those who are eligible to pre-order.

would it sell lower than $499?? i find it too pricey vs Hacked Panasonic BD players

But then DVD playing capability of Panasonic BD players is way way off compared to that of the OPPO BDP-83.. I should know.. The OPPO 983H is so much better in terms of DVD playback compared to my Pana BD 30.. The DVD playing mechanism of the BDP-83 is the same as that of the 983H.. In my opinion, Pana BD players is only good for BD playback..

+1 here doc, nothing compares with oppo for upscaling. specially with the high end model's having the anchor bay vrs chip. ;D
although $499 is still to steep for me. and oppo pricing has traditionally been very stable.

any first hand reviews? :)
just go to page 2 of this thread and read sir law's post, since this player will only be available this july, only a few beta testers were given the chance to get a test unit. sir law is one of them (since he lives in the u.s.a), afaik, its a pretty good machine from his opinion. but as i have said. $499 + shipping here, still too steep for me. :)

this seems like a sensible player so far from spec and review, would anyone know if this can play mkv files yet?

I bit the bullet and upgraded my regular BDP-83 to 83SE today. I am awaiting for there RMA so that i can ship this player to them asap.
Bought Harry Potter 6 and Public Enemy in Bluray as well. Not to mention Lost Season 1 to 5 bluray.
-
Wow! Congrats on your upgrade to SE SirLaw11. Please do share with us your impressions using the analog connection with the new SABRE DAC. Is it a great improvement as compare with using the HDMI connection? Looks like it will match well with a Marantz Receiver being analog its known strength.
Howabout DVD playback, is it region free already?
Thanks

I would definitely give you guys an update on the analog section of this player since that is the reason why i took the upgrade. If owners of 83SE or 83NF were any indication, then that means i am in for a very good ride. Right now the 2 channel of the 83SE/83NE based on the observations of people owning both BDP-09FD and the BDp-83SE/NE is far more superior than the wolfson dac in the elite bluray. Most likely i will be doing HDMI video only and multichannel for my audio and let the player do the decoding =) I have a couple of SACD and DVD-A to test with. AS far as dvd playback being region free, there is a mod that you can do to make it region free. But since i dont have a lot of foreign movies and it will void my warranty i would not risk it.
There is another upgrade that i might do base on Nuforce mod. If there is a discern difference between the 83SE amd the Nuforce version then i might. I am just waiting right now for a concrete head to head of both unit.
Here is the website of the Nuforce version of there BDP-83:

Just a quick question for this Oppo, does it need to have a hardware modification to be region-free on BD & DVD?
-
Just a quick question for this Oppo, does it need to have a hardware modification to be region-free on BD & DVD?
Meron pong software and hardware mod. See below link:
http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-ray-players/1030215-oppo-bdp-83-owners-thread-all-regions.html
I'm currently using the software mod for firmware version 430 and its working naman po.
Pero, I'll be trying a hardware mod so I can load newer firmwares from Oppo without doing the software mod everytime, such as this one:
http://www.bluraychip.dk/product.php?id_product=10
I hope this helps.
-
Thanks for clarifying this. Mukhang madali lang naman gawin ung mods. Antaas na kasi ng prices ng mga modified na.

After testing this out for a couple of days since i received it from oppo, all i can say is WOW. I could have never imagine that for a mere $299 upgrade it can sound as good as MCD500. And with the recent firmware update, it gave me an LG GUI complete with BluTV. With that firmware upgrade, it introduced better clarity from high to mid to low not to mention better bass. All these listening was done using 2 channel of the BDP83SE using downmix stereo as my configuration. I've tried to listen to some redbook cd and it continues to amazed me. I thought i was done listening to them but after playing them thru BDP83SE, i guess i will be dusting my redbook cd collection.
As far as multi channel is concern. I have'nt tested the analog multichannel yet since i am still busy with work, but once i become free i will add my own assessment of its multichannel capability. But if the 2 channel is any indication, i am in for a wonderful ride. Right now i am listening to Linda Ronstadt & The Nelson Riddle Orchestra for my final listening pleasure tonight.
Until then....

Congrat SirLaw11 for the upgrade! Now it's a super player! ;)

Has anyone tried connecting a 1TB or more usb storage on your BDP-83? I can't seem to find anyone from the internet, even avsforum, that specified how much capacity of usb storage have they connected it with. Haven't tried Oppo customer service though.

E-mailed Oppo a few minutes ago and got their response already:
The player supports FAT16 and FAT32 filesystems. We have tested drives up to 1.5TB in size without any issues as long as the main logical partition is FAT32.
As for brands, we generally recommend Seagate or Western Digital.

I read somewhere in AVForum that the hardware of the current BDP-83 couldn't support 3D, so I guess they'll be releasing a 3D-capable player. As for MKV playback, also from AVForum, they had to make chunks of 4Gig MKV files which is FAT32's file size limit.

Bro, what's your definition of an "universal player"? ;D

oh, turnoff ;D Might as well wait for a 3d-capable player
-
Bro, what's your definition of an "universal player"? ;D
universal player, it can play blu ray and dvd from variuos region i read in some other thread that other bluray player needs to be update or decode for them to play other regions thats why im asking if oppo is also like that ;D pardon my ignorance ??? ;D
-
Usually they refer to "universal players" when the unit can play almost all known audio and video formats. Region-free if it can read all dvd/bluray region disks. Oppo isn't region-free, it's Region A for bluray and Region 1 on dvd. However, there are hardware and software mods that were developed, outside Oppo, that can make it region-free for dvd and region-selectable on bluray.

I read in Blu-ray.com forum a member is using it & has no problem playing any region BD! :o
-
I previously used the "region-free" firmware version of the BDP83. Now, I'm using this one and by default it's dvd region-free. BD is supposedly selectible, default is region A. Haven't played other region BDs, don't have any yet. Did the latest firmware upgrade with no problem.
