Title: What's the CRAZIEST/WILDEST thing you've done / would do for your DVD collectn?
Post by: MultipleAngles on Apr 28, 2001 at 07:27 AM: What's the craziest thing you've done for our favorite format: buying and caring for DVDs, home systems, or getting that DVD you reallyreally want.

Here's mine. Rather stupid really:

I sold my whole VHS collection, which includes a lot of anime and my Star Wars and Indy Jones trilogies. I wanted to sell them before no one wants to buy VHS.

But, BOY, am I paying for it!!! Imagine not being able to watch any trilogy for sooo long!! George Lucas, get those prequels done post haste!

And my anime... :'( Man, I'm just glad "Akira" will be coming out soon

bought a new t.v. set since i wanted component video input,

then bought a new receiver since i wanted to see what the big deal about dd5.1 and dts

bought new speakers, and subwoofer.... gotta have the thump!

so all in all i've sunk quite a huge money just to enjoy this dvd thing......

worth every dime i've spent!!!

but still... my wife thinks i'm crazy

Kaya lang, pretty soon we'd get the itch again and start upgrading. It's a cycle. But that's the price we pay in pursuit of the 'perfect' home theater set-up, isn't?. My mom thinks I'm crazy too to spend so much for 'toys'.; tsk, tsk, tsk.... ;D

ay nako...i'm getting that itch again...since i'm trying to get those aura bass shakers(at least 2)
....as an add-on..

kasi my wife has been telling me to tone down the vol.,...pero if i do... nawawala naman yung yanig ng subwoofer...so i'm think this would be a nice solution or compromise.

But then there's spending an extra P20,000 for the express purpose of buying an iMac that plays DVDs, rather than a plain vanilla iMac without the DVD capability -- a lot of people would conclude that I don't have both oars in the water.

But consider this -- I've spent all this money, and I haven't even started building up my home theater setup yet (something I fully intend to do) -- now that is proof positive that I'm not playing with a full deck. A few slices shy of a loaf. Elevator doesn't go all the way to the top. Leak in the sunroof. Heh. Aheh. Heheh. AheeheeHEEheeHEEmwahahaHAHAhaha...

Just kidding! hahaha! I'm just pulling your leg since you've spent so much and there's nothing more frustrating than finding out items you've just bought were cheaper elsewhere. :)

And the craziest thing I've done? Maybe spending on my home theater set-up... kulang pa nga eh ;D But I still think it's money well spent as going to the movies (and eating out after the movie then those Starbucks Frapuccinos) are expensive too anyway. Now, I just have a warm cup of instant Yakisoba in hand while I enjoy my dvds.

Then the next week, katips tells me that she was able to get the same model for only P15k. I don't think I've ever forgiven her for having better luck than me. ;D

katips Uy tama na! The thing about my DVD player not being able to play RCE disc is still a very sore topic. :D

Aside from buying the works for home theater : dvd player, receiver, TV, speakers, subs - and rabidly collecting every recommended DVD disk that websites recommend (i have now over a hundred R1 and R3 disks), i got a high-end fully-loaded-with-all-the-works PC so i could look at the DVD-rom contents of these movie DVDs.

am also considering buying a notebook with a DVD drive so i could have DVD viewing on the go.

STOP THE CRAZINESS!!!! ARGHHHHH!!!! :o

I went to National's to buy a book. An art book that I need for work. I almost didn't buy it because I thought it was too expensive at 1,600 pesos. And it truly HIT me. What the hell was happening to me? I can buy a DVD worth 1,500 pesos without batting an eyelash. And I balk at a 1,600 book which I need for work? What the hell is that? How screwed can anyone's priorities get? Jeez! So I'm putting my foot down, seriously. No more DVD buying on impulse for me after I settle all my current commitments. I'm reserving my DVD buying for stuff like Citizen Kane, Godfather and Die Hard: 5 Star Edition when they come out. You know, the greats. ;D

This was 3 years ago when everything wass still so expensive. My mom really freaked out when the delivery people started hauling in all the stuff that I got.

Somehow I think thats the reason why I still haven't gotten my trust fund.... ;D

oh.. is this considered crazy? around a third or so of my collection are still sealed... and i even havent watched most of the movies yet.

I started building a home theater para lang sa DVD
wala pa akong dvd player bumili na ako ng matrix DVD.
Bumili ako ng amplifier , front speakers, surround speakers,
center speakers, front speakers uli, surround speakers uli.
Bumili din ako ng PS2 kasi akala ko para syang DVD player
and game console all in one, hindi pala. So bumili din ako
ng dvd player. Sa components pa lang yun.. sa Discs mismo
d ko na alam magkano nagastos ko...

Post by: gets on Jun 24, 2001 at 11:29 PM: i own a ps2 and its where i play my dvds along with my pc. no problems playing them there yet...i guess he might mean na basic play features lang yung macocontrol mo walang fancy stuff like zoom, memory, and some other functions of a dedicated dvd player. but it works for me.

i don't think its price would go down to $149 this christmas...but if it does, great!... its a drastic 50% drop from the current $299 pricetag... and it seems to sell well at that price... by christmas, its competition would cost xbox-$299, gamecube-$199.. the lowest i can see it going down to is $199.

Have PS2 sales really been that good? Because I've read that sales have not met expectations due partly to the high hardware price, the initial shortage of units and subsequent inability to meet demand, and few truly compelling games for the system so far. Looks like Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty will be the PS2's first killer app -- a year after its launch. That's a long time to be settling for mediocre games.

Just to keep this post on topic -- another crazy thing I've done for DVD is to seriously contemplate getting a PS2 AND a dedicated DVD player AND a DVD-capable iMac AND iBook. This despite the fact that I'm currently quite broke after having spent over P100,000 on discs alone.

Tell me that isn't crazy. :(

Post by: mm2001 (Guest) on Nov 23, 2001 at 09:25 AM: Ist I have a VHS prologic setup, my cousin and sister start giving me DVD all R1, then buy a DVD player, not happy with the audio upgrade the whole HT system to DTS, then not happy with the performance of my onkyo 484 decided to sell it and buy a Yamaha 496 very satisfied with the audio and DSP mode, after almost 2 yrs my philips DVD give up, send it to the center, it was phase out, since it was enrolled in Abenson 3 yrs. extended warranty they decided to give me a new model no cash out (THANKS ABENSON) months later i upgraded my 29" samsung TV to 32 Toshiba with component video, 2 months after that feel not happy anymore with my surround speakers decided to sell them buy a new set and upgrade also my sub, buy DVD's every two week, then upgrade my computer 1 to DVD rom, a month after got money upgrade my computer 2 (in my room naman) to DVD rom again, hahahhah ubos pela na heheheh
Ngayon ipon ipon uli thinking maybe next year i will upgrade my computer2 PCHT (Soundblaster live and a cretive 5.1 speakers sana)

Am I Crazy by the way my DVD collection is now 100 and growing Goshhhh hanggang saan pa kaya heheheheh

It's nice to find out this extended warranty thing is not a racket and advantageous for certain appliance purchases. Will definitely consider it at my next purchase. ::)

when abenson (SMWest) gave me the new unit, it was in a sealed box, with a free DVD pa and a new receipt with the present price value, that's why I enrolled it again to their extended warranty. They're very accomodating and they are the one calling me up pa if the unit arrive and ready to pick up of course with the defective unit surrendered to Philips center I hope other appliance store will also follow what abenson is doing as part of their consumer right program. ;D

Thanks again for the info mm2001.

The program is available at most major appliance stores. I believe that it's a type of insurance run by one of the local major insurance companies. It's just that I never bothered with it thinking that it was just another rip off. But thanks to your posts, it seems like a worthwhile offer.

But then, this may be one of the saner things we can do to support our DVD addiction. Better to stop at that before the mods change the title of this thread to ...saner things... ;D

Went all the way to Quiapo in shorts, slippers and sando to satisfy my curiousity in pirated DVDs.

Spend a lot of time looking for DVD bargains in the net.

Not studying for my diplomate boards just to open and watch those sealed DVDs and logging on to PinoyDVD! Aaarrghh! Hope and pray I won't flunk the freaking exam...don't know who to blame but DVDs! >:(

But I love the fact that I own Night of the Living Dead Elite Edition and practically all early John Carpenter flicks (except "Assault on Precinct 13" which just came out) before he started making crappy films in the late 80's / early 90's. Mwahahhaa!!!!

I do this often. I just get a movie to see if it's any good. 99 percent of the time I get the original afterwards.
