Title: DVD Ripper SW
Post by: hoc on Feb 21, 2009 at 10:25 PM
Hi,

I am planning to digitize my DVD collection. What good DVD ripper SW is recommended? I read from this forum that ripping as ISO or VOB provides the best format. Aside from archiving to a hard disk, I would like to copy the videos to my mobile devices - I have an IPOD Touch and a Microsoft Zune.

what SW is the most appropriate, and what provides the best quality?

Found this deal somewhere, FREE DVD RIPPER PRO (normally 39.95, no CC required):  YMMV,  http://dvdfast.net/gift/christmas-gift-ripper.php

You could also try this one, WinX DVD Ripper (still alive today):  http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php?topic=105782.0

if you have a 8000 or 9000 series Nvidia card like a 9600GT or an 8800GT card you might want to exploit it's CUDA feature.. You can use Badaboom to encode your videos almost without taking any cpu usage and have your video card take the beating...   and did I mention that its wicked fast..  ;D

+2000000000 for dvd shrink.

this! or you may want to try DVD Decrypter (for extracting the .VOB files of your DVD) and Auto Gordian Knot for converting and compressing the extracted .VOB to .avi files

I don't use any of the above.  I use AnyDVD on Windows and Handbrake on the Mac.

I am also planning to do the same thing.

What is the recommended software to do this since most of my original DVD titles also have built-in protection but I want to recover storage space and access this through a media player in a library of ISO format equivalent that retains full DVD menu option functionality.

AnyDVD HD does exactly that.

People here are recommending very different types of tools that in general fall into two camps:

(i) Quick and easy one step tools that will rip and convert or load into a container in one go (Any DVD Converter is an example of this type of thing. Generally these will compromise quality to some degree. They will naturally uncompress/recompress and many will not preserve the audio stream in it's original format (i.e. AC3, DTS etc.)

(ii) More purist but two step tools (DVD Shrink is an example of these; DVD Decrypter is another). DVD Shrink is just a ripper and will leave you with the .VOB files that you will then have to handle with another tool to put them into a more conveniently playable format - like .mkv or .mp4 etc. For this second step mkvmerge is good (and free). These types of tools DO NOT decompress/re-compress. They will just separate out the different titles on the DVD, demux the various streams and load the streams into a different more convenient container as is with no loss of quality...but you will end up with big files: the same size as they are on the DVD. MakeMKV is the only one step tool that leaves you with full quality.

You need to decide what you want - convenience or quality.

If you are looking for a ripper check DVDfab. I think they have both DVD and bluray in one package this include removing the encryption.
