I saw Errol Morris' The Thin Blue Line today and that got me into thinking: What are some of the notable and best FILIPINO documentaries? Who are our great documentary filmmakers?
Apart from Imelda, I can't recall any truly notable theatrically released Filipino documentary of recent years.
-
Nick de Ocampo has made some noteworthy docus.
-
All of Ditsi Carolino's films are noteworthy, if not great documentaries --- Riles, Bunso, Lupang Hinarang, Minsan Lang Sila Bata.
-
There was Ditzi Carolino's Bunso, which generated a whole lot of buzz a few years back. Almost as much as Kubrador, if I remember right.
And there was also Raya Martin's The Island at the End of the World about Batanes.
And Mike De Leon's Signos was shown last year at Robinson's but I missed it - - -saw Kakakaba Kaba Ka Ba? instead)
Carolino's new work, Lupang Hinirang was shown as a work-in-progress at this year's Cinemalaya.
-
Signos by Mike de Leon, Pete Lacaba, Silvia Mayuga et al. Still very relevant.
-
Lamberto V. Avellana and Tikoy Aguiluz produced documentaries as well, didn't they?
-
There's also Doy del Mundo's informative documentary Maid In Singapore...
-
Tikoy did Balweg, Mt. Banahaw, Holy Mountain, and 30 Views of Mt. Mayon.
I think his Bagong Bayani is a great docudrama, a cross between The Thin Blue Line and And Now For Something Completely Different.
Auraeus did a doc on his little island in Palawan. I forget the title.
There's also Ramona Diaz's Imelda, a portable history of recent Philippines.
And Tad Ermitano's The Retrochronological Transfer of Information was entered in the Yamagata Documentary Film Festival. Go figure ;D.

Bumping this thread up. Any idea where one can find these gems?

Dokyu Film Maker would be...
...Kidlat Tahimik.
I always see him here in the streets of Baguio holding his film camera and vintage vid recorder.
Pero minsan gamit nya is yung Canon digital camcorder which I forgot the model.
