Title: The X-Files

Just wondering why no one has started this thread yet...

Let's talk X-Files, X-Philes!

Ah, the X-Files...  How's the show going these days (to all of you who are still regularly tuning in to this show)?  I kinda stopped watching this regularly at around the 5th season...  I remember nung seasons 1 through 3 pa lang, kabisado ko pa talaga yung episode titles of each episode, and I can enumerate all variants to "The Truth is Out There" that they put on some episodes...  I dunno why, but I just lost interest somewhere along the way...  Tapos ngayon, ala na si Mulder...  The show's not going to be the same without the Mulder-Scully tandem...

I practically preached the X-files back in High School. I got to see the pilot exactly when it was showing in the States thanks to a formerly Satellite-fed Sky Cable.

Its ironic that I lost interest in the third season. Not through any fault of the series, mind you. I was watching the series through StarTV, and - for some reason - they decided to cut "disturbing" content whenever it appeared. I got sooooo turned off that I tried emailing StarTV, even the X-files official site, to do something about it. Alas, my pleas fell on deaf ears. And I think RPN9's broadcasts were a lot more advanced, so I was practically left in Limbo.

But now the DVDs are coming out at a steady rate so (I hope) I'm catching up!

Akala ko ako lang ang sumulat sa Star TV regarding their censorship of the X-Files!!!  Dalawa na pala tayo!  :)

RPN 9 is showing their latest acquisition of the X-Files alternating with reruns. I was so bitin one time when they had to stretch a two-part episode into three weeks. Us noncable subscribers get our share of "locally edited" episodes to accomodate sponsors. I heard somewhere that Bobby Garcia directed (or played a major part in the production) one (maybe a few) episode(s).

What about Robert Patrick filling-in David Duchovny's shoes? I heard he plays the skeptic that Scully used to be. Has anybody seen an episode with him already in? How's he doing so far?

I guess not. Hope that they'd still come-up with interesting stories though. I think Robert Patrick started at the last quarter of the 8th season ??? and were still stuck at 6th via free TV and 4th on DVD. It's a looong waaaiit.

Btw, there was a spin-off of the X-Files starring the Lone Gunmen but they just didn't take off and was cancelled after the first season. Same goes for Millenium.

SPOILER ALERT

I used to be a huge X-Phile.  I had all episodes from Season Two onward taped for me by relatives in the US and shipped to me in Manila regularly.

In 1997 I created and moderated the Philippine X-Files Mailing List ([email protected]); at its height it had 80+ subscribers.  The list still exists, but nobody has posted on it for over six months.  List activity has been minimal over the past year and a half.

I bought all the books and collected all the videos released in the US and locally.  I could quote you classic lines from my favorite episodes ("You will find her beside the fat little white Nazi stormtrooper," Clyde Bruckman, from "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," 3x04; "I didn't spend all those years playing Dungeons and Dragons without learning something about courage," Darin Morgan, "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'").

I downloaded and updated the lists of Mulderisms and Scullyisms from the net.  I bookmarked all the fan sites and read the fanfic.  I searched for and saved every interview with Chris Carter, the crew, the cast.  I identified favorite directors and writers (Darin Morgan, Glen Morgan and James Wong, Chris Carter, Frank Spotnitz) and least favorites (John Shiban, still hate his guts).

I bought the UFO and Roswell books and taped the alien autopsy video, poring over it like a detective searching for signs of a hoax.

I could name all the known Consortium members (The First Elder or Brandoguy, Conrad Strughold, Well-Manicured Man, and of course the inimitable Cigarette-Smoking Man).  I was endlessly fascinated by Mulder's shady network of informants and apparent sympathizers (Deep Throat, who was slain by the Crewcut Man, X, Marita Covarrubias). I was actively involved in the search for Mulder's sister and the cure for Scully's cancer.  When Duane Barry (Steve Railsback) abducted Scully for three episodes in season two while Gillian Anderson had her child Piper, I was in mortal terror for fear that she would not return.  When Mulder got trapped in the desert boxcar at the end of "Anasazi" (2x24) and CSM ordered his men to "burn it!" I squirmed impatiently through the summer hiatus awaiting the third season opener ("The Blessing Way," 3x01).  I think "Paper Clip" (3x02) is the finest mythology episode produced.

I bought and played the collectible card game, even after it was discontinued.  As a multimedia authoring exercise, I attempted to create an X-Files Omnipedia that would display plot summaries, images, audio and video clips from the show.  I could tell you the difference between a shipper and a noromo.  I knew Mulder's address and Scully's cell phone number.

Eventually the DVD sets came out, and I have seasons 1, 2 and 3.  I plan to get seasons 4 and 5 as well.  Then, we'll see.  Because along the way I lost my interest in the show, around the time of season six.  I sold or gave away all my tapes.  I stopped watching it religiously.  Something was missing.  Either I had changed or the show had changed, or maybe it was a little of both.  But for whatever reason, I was no longer drawn to the show with the fanatical ardor of the past.

By the way, utoy, Millennium lasted for not just one but three seasons before being axed.  I should know, I had them all on tape.  I loved that show, and the character of Frank Black, as well.  Some time after Millennium was axed, Frank Black made a special appearance in The X-Files, in an episode that served as a fitting epilogue to Millennium.

Oops, sorry I didn't really make my statement clear. I know Millenium lasted for more than a season. I was actually ignoring it until I heard people talking about how dark the series was. As a matter of fact, I intently watched its last few episodes and yes I've seen that Millenium episode.

Saw those episodes last year.  "Closure" was loopy, new age claptrap.  "X-Cops" was yet another example of the creative bankruptcy that has begun to afflict the show in later seasons, employing the "Cops"-ish cinema verité camera technique to divert attention from the fact that the story was yet another monster/slasher one-shot that has been done and overdone in previous seasons.  And "First Person Shooter" was just plain stupid -- as mindless as the game genre for which the episode is named.  Dumber even than "El Mundo Gira," "Teso Dos Bichos, " or "Space."

"The Amazing Maleeni" was quite fun, though.  But again, it bordered on the tone of self-parody that the show has begun to adopt increasingly to bolster ratings and mask the fact that its former staple formula of dead serious conspiracy/suspense and horror just isn't working as well as it used to.

Right.

Just so we're clear on this, the guy from Millennium was on an X-Files episode entitled "Millennium" which was actually an epilogue to the series Millennium which was cancelled whereas The X-Files, which began even before Millennium seven years before the end of the last millennium, continues to air and has even outlived not only Millennium but The Lone Gunmen which was a spin-off from The X-Files starring Langley, Byers and Frohike, recurring characters from The X-Files (and not Millennium).

Um...did everyone get that...okay...what was I saying?   ;D

As I am, I have accumulated around 20 tapes recording all XF episodes could find.  I was particularly most happy when I was able to go to the States.  I almost didn't wanna come back when I saw the networks air back epidsodes of TXF everyday!  Most were recorded randomly, but I was proud of a volume of tapes I made which has the entire mythology episodes from season 1 to 5, in order.

Quote

In 1997 I created and moderated the Philippine X-Files Mailing List ([email protected]); at its height it had 80+ subscribers.  The list still exists, but nobody has posted on it for over six months.  List activity has been minimal over the past year and a half.

I am a member!  Well, I am a member of almost every XF mailing list here in the PH (cXm, x-flips), but too bad, because I joined during the time TXF was losing its appeal.

Did any of you ever have Jane Goldman's book The X-Files Book Of The Unexplained?  Probably the greatest book published which has references to The X-Files (note: It isn't a book entirely about The X-Files) I have volumes 1 and 2 (both bought at different times and places, but at real bargain prices), and if there's a volume 3 onwards, let me know.  These books are 2 of my most treasured books.

Now that I think of it, I think Darin Morgan wrote the best ever one-liners on the series.  He's also one of the writers who provides the smartest XF stories.

Quote

I identified favorite directors and writers (Darin Morgan, Glen Morgan and James Wong, Chris Carter, Frank Spotnitz)

Did you forget Vince Gilligan, or do you hate his guts too?  :D

As for directors, I think I liked those eps by Rob Bowman and David Nutter.

Mulder's shady network of informants and apparent sympathizers (Deep Throat, who was slain by the Crewcut Man, X, Marita Covarrubias).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the Gray-Haired Man who killed Deep Throat?  Anyway, we're probably referring to the same dude, since the Gray-Haired Man has a crew-cut hair.

Quote

I think "Paper Clip" (3x02) is the finest mythology episode produced.

I think the finest mythology arc written was the Redux Trilogy (Gethsemane, Redux, Redux II).  Another great myth arc were the episodes Nisei and 731.

I agree.  I think TXF started declining after season 5.  Although season 6 has some memorable episodes (Dreamland I and II are two of the episodes in my favorites list; Triangle was swinging with its, um, swing music; Two Fathers and One Son has some great revelations and answered A LOT of questions; Arcadia, though simply a monster episode, has its charming appeal [but I'm no shipper, mind you]; etc. etc.), it still didn't compare to the ones from the previous seasons.

I dunno, I also lost interest in watching the episodes.  But I still watch, and I think I'm still content with the current episodes.  As for buying the DVDs, I vowed to collect every X-Files episode from start to finish, no matter what.  Once an X-Phile, always an X-Phile.  That's probably also the reason why I don't watch as much, because II know that soon enough I will have them all in one shelf. :D

So, what do you think is the best XF season?  And let's talk about some of our favorite episodes, shall we?

My favorite episodes?  Episodes written by Darin Morgan are classics in my mind...  Humbug, Clyde Bruckman, Jose Chung... As for the conspiracy episodes, Anasazi is the one I remember to really have enjoyed watching (the one where Mulder gets stuck in a boxcar in the end and CSM had it blown up...  you had to wait for the start of the 3rd season for the continuation of that storyline)...

Anywayz, follwing this thread's discussion, I absolutely agree that Morgan and Wong made some great episodes. My favorite seasons were 3 and 4.  I agree with kings5504, all the Darin Morgan episodes were unforgettable:  Humbug, War of the Coprophages, Jose Chung, Small Potatoes.

Kim Manners is also among my favorite directors.

Favorite mythology episodes, there are so many.  Duane Barry/Ascension/One Breath, Colony/End Game, Anasazi/The Blessing Way/Paper Clip, Nisei/731 and many others.  As you can probably tell, I enjoyed the mythology episodes far more than the one-shots.

Duane Barry!  Oo nga pala!  How could I have forgotten to mention that?  That was one cool conspiracy episode...

...and Small Potatoes!  That was really funny...  Actually that episode wasn't written by Darin Morgan but starred Darin (he was the janitor who could morph into the faces of other guys)...  at saka War of the Coprophages!!!  merong nga pala akong VHS tape nun!  :)

And I have a soft spot for the episode Aubrey, which was about this pregnant detective having nightmares about serial killings which happened some 50 years ago...  It was really creepy... not really a "classic" compared to the best the X-Files can offer, but it was the very first X-Files episode that I saw (back when Cable TV was just a new concept here in the Philippines and we used to get these US channels sometimes)...  Watching that episode made me wish that the show would be brought here...

gonz: Thanks for the correction.  I think I got the term Gray-Haired Man from one of those XF forums.

As for Small Potatoes, yup it was actually written by Vince Gilligan (one of my favorite writers, who also wrote eps such as Pusher, Paper Hearts, Bad Blood and Unusual Suspects), but starred Darin Morgan, being his sort of a "farewell" to writing for the X-Files.

And yes, Darin Morgan episodes are indeed classics :)

Updates and *BUMP*

Spoilers

I just viewed the first of a two-part intro to season nine.  To sum up:  Duchovny is definitely gone, Gillian is leaving, and we have a new "Mulder and Scully" handling the X-Files.

Annabeth Gish plays Special Agent Monica Reyes (aka "The New Scully", no matter how much Chris Carter claims otherwise -- she could pass for an imperfect, less striking clone of GA).  Among the cases Reyes handled in the NY FBI field office was the disappearance of 8-year-old Luke Dogget, son of then-NY police detective John Doggett.  He later convinced Reyes to join him on the X-Files.

Reyes joins Special Agent John Doggett, a hard-nosed, ex-NY cop who believes every case can be solved using standard investigative techniques.  He was assigned to head up the FBI task force probing Mulder's disappearance.

Also joining the cast is Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Liar Liar, Hot Shots, Twister) as Assistant Director Brad Follmer, ex-SAC of the NY field office, where he carried on an illicit affair with Agent Monica Reyes.

Lucy Lawless (Xena, warrior princess)  stars in the season nine opener as a mysterious woman who drags you down --  literally.  :)

My take, in brief:  where o where are Mulder and Scully?  I'm lukewarm about Gish, although Patrick as Doggett is compellingly watchable.  The writing on the show appears to have retained the fine quality of its glory days, but that may just be because the season nine intro episodes were written by veteran heavy hitters Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz.  The concept though for this opening two-parter strikes me as particularly silly.  However, I am willing to stick around for at least the next episode to see if Carter and co. will deliver a satisfying explanation.

My forecast:  without both Duchovny and GA, this will be the show's last season.  Gish is boring and not as easy on the eyes as GA.  Of course, I could be wrong -- you know that nothing ever really dies on The X-Files.  ;)

Hi, Gonz

Mulder and Scully will definitely live on---in the next X-Files movie. Carter has confirmed that X-Files 2 will proceed and air next year with Duchovny and Armstrong on board.

So maybe Carter is doing to X-Files what Paramount did to Star Trek: watch the old lovable reliables onscreen while build a new cast and future successor to the franchise on TV.

I'm open to that---but to be honest, your news was depressing. With Mulder and Scully gone, what will happen to the other fascinating characters like CSM? And will Cary Elwes take over Skinner? I like Cary ELWEs as an ctor, but please, I don't want to lose Skinner, too.

I've seen no indication so far that Mitch Pileggi is leaving the show as well -- although Cary Elwes' character appears to have taken over Skinner's office.  Hmmm.

Likewise, both Skinner and CSM still appear in the show's cast on thex-files.com.  But this may not mean much since Krycek does as well, and...

Spoiler

...he was apparently shot and killed in the season eight finale.

But as I said, nothing ever really dies on the show.  ;)

I just watched the first episode of Season 9 last Sunday, and guess what Mitch Pileggi is already in the opening credits after Gillian, Robert Patrick, Annabeth Gish and Mr. Pileggi.  Cary Elwes is mentioned as a  star, but the official site indicated that he'll be a regular member of the cast.  Lucy Lawless, looks thinner and not as testosteroned as Xena.

I won't give away the plot, some members might scorn me for it.  But, it's a little different since its already Doggett and Reyes in the spotlight, and they're showing less and less of Scully, which I think this will be her last season.

Call me biased but I think Gillian Anderson is much more glamorous than Annabeth Gish.  It'll take a while to get used to Special Agent Monica Reyes, though she showed a bare back in her first shot in the episode (She just woke up, and wore only her black nightime panties, hehehe):)

It's been really a long while since I last watched this show...  I think the last episodes I watched before totally tuning out were Triangle, and Dreamland, Parts 1 and 2.  I used to be such a big fan of this show.  I used to be able to name the titles of the episodes for the first 3 seasons in chronological order.  Heck, I even used Mulder's FBI badge number as password para sa Windows nung kasikatan pa ng show...  I just got kinda tired of how repetitive the show seemed to get in the later seasons, and the conspiracy that seemed to be going nowhere...  Plus, my attention has shifted to Buffy during those later years...  Hope they would still be able to tell a decent story for the second movie...  I still might check it out....

Duchovny to Return as Mulder in 'X-Files' Finale

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Turns out the truth really is out there and so is former "X-Files" star David Duchovny.

The Fox television network said Duchovny, whose participation in a series finale was uncertain when the show's retirement was announced last month, will indeed appear in a final two-hour send-off.

Details of the final five episodes are under wraps, but Fox, which broadcasts the show, and series creator Chris Carter have promised that many of the questions raised in the show's nine seasons will finally be answered.

Post by: melkeith on Jul 29, 2002 at 05:34 PM
I could not find the time to watch the latest X-Files episodes, but I have been following developments about the show on the Net.  I have read the transcript of the final episode "The Truth" and I must say it was a satisfying enough conclusion.

The episode tried to wrap up the sometimes contradictory story elements of the Conspiracy mythology through quasi-legal court proceedings, so to the occasional X-File viewer it may raise more questions.

The fate of the Cigarette Smoking Man is shown, as well as the last piece of information missing from the planned alien viral apocalypse.

Does anybody here know when the local TV channels will air this episode?

Hey, didn't know we had an Xfiles thread here!  :-\ :)...Been watching it from Seasons 1 - 4 since...forever? ;D, on DVD. Must say Season 4 has the most well-written stories. ;)

Here's something interesting from Mighty Big TV:

A blow by blow account of SEASON 9 including the ENDING, if you like to read SPOILERS: http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/show.cgi?show=5

An XFiles FAQ:
http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/faq.cgi?show=5

There was one interesting commentary about the final episode in this site but I couldn't find it.   :-\;D

Would anyone know if they'll release X-Files Seasons DVDs for Region 3? I'm hoping this'll be cheaper like around P2000. :)

I was able to download The Truth (finale), and I've had it for months, but still I can't get my self to see it.  I'd like to watch the previous myth arc episodes first, to prepare myself for the end...

Hey Dan, so you're a member of the cXm, xfphil, xfm mailing lists too, huh? :)

Hey Dan,

What episode was that, 2 nights ago?  Thing is, halfway through season 7, I lost track of the episodes, so now that I'd like to see later episodes, I can't because I'd like to see the previous ones first.  :P

I haven't heard about tfc, but I'm a member of all the rest you mention, I think.  There's another where I'm originally in, the xflips mailing list.

The most recent episode  was "Badlaa", vengeful mystic goes berserk.

I think i've been to xflips once or twice. They seem to be the only one of the many pinoy x-phile groups that are actually active, am i right?

Of course, we at The Basement Office (this is the tfc I'm telling you about) are trying our best too. I just formed this e-group/ML about a week ago. The URL is below and the reason why the name of the group and site is different because I'm paying homage to one of the oldest X-Philes sites on the net  which is also known as "The File Cabinet" and a feel for Mulder and Scully's Basement Office, hence, The Basement Office official name.

You don't really need to see other previous ep's to follow the continuity, that's the great thing about x. They have so many off-kilter storylines in between arcs you'll just fall comfortably in the groove once you've settled in.  ;)

Okay, time for blatant pimping. ;D  I'm serious about the invites. Just click on the URL below my sig. or PM me your email addy so i can include you in the list. Some PinoyDVD people have already signed up. We need more members and also I'm trying to get through to the other x-lists to wake them up or sumthin, c'mon! This is the X-Files! A show we love! ;D . It's good to network and get together, I always say  ;D

In France, the M6 Channel is currently broadcasting the 9th (last ?) season, and I must tell I'm still a real fan of the series, I think it's one of the best SF series ever produced. Robert Patrick is very good, and some recent episodes were truly frightening.
Some older series are also frequently seen on satellite channels, such as "The Outer Limits".

Besides a thread bump, I'd just like to say that my interest in XF episode watching has just been revived!  I figured, since it's the final season (S9) of the show, I should go and see everything until the end.  But, to appreciate this season, I have to catch up previous mytharcs I've missed, namely those of S7 and S8.  I must admit, S7 has the lousiest mytharcs, but the plot starts moving come S8, and actually becomes interesting again.  Hopefully, it becomes more and more interesting until its ultimate end.  Keeping my fingers crossed...

Tonight's episode on Studio 23: "Nothing Important Happened Today" (part 2) [episode number 9x02]

Show starts 9pm, PHT.  See it!

20th Century Fox has confirmed that there are ongoing plans of bringing back The X-Files with Chris Carter and the show's original cast, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden said that the conversations so far have been only logistical, looking for a viable window when Carter, Duchovny, and Anderson, are available:

Quote
Gary and I both worked [at 20th Century Fox Television] through the entire run of The X-Files. It was a great experience. We've maintained good relationships with Chris, David and Gillian. We're very hopeful, but it's hard. The actors are very busy. They have a lot going on. Chris has a lot on his plate, so it's just trying to carve out the time.

I'm baffled about this as well; FOX can't argue that they have no remastered versions of the episodes when reports say that HD episodes are actually being shown in Europe. But maybe they'll come out with a set during the series' return next year.

Today's episode (10x03) is one of the funniest of all time. They really gave a nice selection of different types of episodes for the season.

Agree--Darin Morgan's script did not disappoint, with lots of hilarious one-liners and performances from the cast, including comedians Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) and Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) ... Also, Mulder's ring tone was priceless.  ;D

Just realized why Guy Mann's outfit looked so familiar: it's a tip of the (straw) hat to Kolchak: The Night Stalker  8)

last ep was awesome. with all the doubt of mulder comes this creature that would make him believe in a certain matter than not all is a conspiracy. liked his camera app as well. ahaha.

The season finale was sort of a dud, with everything crammed into less than an hour. For something major like a global pandemic, 45 minutes seemed rushed and wasn't enough--a full length movie might, but not a single episode. As a result, we got a WTF cliffhanger ending that was unsatisfying.

I welcomed this return, but 6 episodes weren't enough; 8 or 13 episodes would've been just right ... hopefully they do more.

Akala ko 2nd to the last episode. Sobrang bitin nga. A 2 hour or 2 parts season finale sana ginawa nila.

The reason for this rushed series was to build up the hype for the movie, right?

The X-Files Officially Returning For 2017-2018 Season (http://screenrant.com/x-files-revival-season-11-2017-2018-fox/)

Quote
FOX has officially announced The X-Files will return to the network for a 10-episode second installment in the event series story, although many fans will likely just refer to it as season 11, since that’s basically what it is at this point. Whatever one opts to call the new episodes, they’ll begin production this summer, with plans to air them sometime during the 2017-2018 broadcast season. Exactly when during the season has yet to be specified, but an early 2018 premiere seems likely, mirroring the scheduling of the 2016 revival

I'm glad Mulder and Scully are coming back for the new season. I was worried that they were just there to hand over the baton to a younger cast in the last season.

That season finale was terrible... it was uplifted slightly by Scully's revelation in the ending, but still, it was pretty bad.  😑

Also, wtf happened to Skinner? LOL
