Chito Roño directs first Pinoy musical film 'Emir'
MANILA, Philippines - Well-acclaimed director Chito S. Roño finally bared his dream project -- the Philippine's first full-length musical feature.
According to Roño, the film is titled "Emir," which tells the story of a Filipino nanny who will work for the crowned Prince of Morocco.
"From start to end ay kantahan at sayawan. At 'yong kantahan at sayawan na iyon ay part iyon ng pagkukuwento. At ang mga characters sila mismo ang nagpi-perform," Roño said.
(From start to end, there will be songs and dances. And the songs and dances will be part of the plot. The characters themselves will perform.)
Under FDCP Productions and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, "Emir" is a film honoring the talents of Filipinos.
"Kasi alam natin ang Filipino mahilig sa kanta. Mapabata, mapamatanda, mahilig sa kanta talaga 'yan. (We know Filipinos love to sing. Whether they're young or old, they like songs)," the director added.
With musical arrangements by Chino Toledo, the film features musical artists like Dulce, Sid Lucero, Jhong Hilario, Beverly Salviejo and Francheska Farr as the lead stars.
To make the story more realistic, some scenes of the movie will also be shot in Morocco. According to Roño, they already finished all the local scenes needed for the movie.

The "first Pinoy musical film" ? ??? Haven't they heard of those Pinoy musical films of the 50s from Sampaguita and LVN pictrues?

Earliest surviving Filipino film is Giliw Ko, a musical, 1939.
I'm guessing they mean first in the Andrew Lloyd Webber format--pop tunes, all-singing, so on and so forth.

I saw the trailer for this movie when I was in Manila. It looks like a weird movie.

yeah, more like an opera rather than Sound of Music type of film where music and dialogues are included.

Trailer is weird. Scenes are all shot in the countryside in rural areas. Then suddenly music becomes arabic then the title Emir.

Showing starts today. Just read that one of the song composers & lyricists is Gary Granada, one of my personal favorites.

;D Saw this tonight with friends. One of the cast members, Melanie Dujunco who plays one of the OFW bitches (alongside Beverly Salviejo) is a friend. The movie could have been better but I must say the production is audacious and I guess all efforts somehow paid off. Very good cinematography and editing. Songs are okay though nothing memorable and instrumentation was provided by the Manila Symphony Orchestra. Sound is just okay though I was told it was recorded in Dolby 5.1. The lead Francesca Farr is really good so is the rest of the cast. Of course, Dulce has her own moment.

Topnotch production values, but the story seems lacking & unfocused, with many different sub-plots all over the place. I think they tried to make the scope too broad & "epic". I do like the songs & music; good but not pop-tunes catchy. Recognized some of the songs as past Gary Granada works. The cinematography & production design are excellent.

It tried to be epic but failed heroically. As jas said, too many sub-plots that really weren't necessary and that ending was so bitin! It didn't feel like a satisfactory ending for a musical where the music swells as they sing the chorus. Maybe that's why they added that song and dance number a la ASAP at the end.
I heard that GMA suggested this story when she met a member of middle east royalty who spoke flawless tagalog.

By the way, just saw the screening of Dung-aw in Cine Adarna. How can Emir claim to be the first Pinoy movie musical if Dung-aw exists by Lino Brocka about the life of Gabriela Silang? It was produced by Armida Siguion-Reyna.
