Tombstone is better than the Wyatt Earp movie, medyo boring kasi ung Wyatt Earp eh. tapos mas maganda ung pag ka dala ni Val Kilmer sa role ni Doc Holiday. ;)

From what I've seen I doubt if the old movies will look better on Bluray as it did immensely on DVD.(imagine seeing seven samurai in VHS & LD...then seeing the digitalized version in DVD...now Bluray will only look like a badly encoded DVD, another example is Gone with the Wind)

Per my viewing of the Spiderman Trilogy and considering that the technology to clear the digital noise in Spiderman 1 was there, it still proved to have a lot of grainy artifacts ,and to think that it's a movie recently made, only Spiderman 3 was noticeably clean and of Bluray quality.

Therefore, only he new movies made within the present time frame will look good on Bluray like Avatar, otherwise, it's much better to stick with the DVD versions of Jurrasic Park, Inidiana Jones or any of the good really good Criterion titles.

Thanks for confirming this issue.

My theory is that for old movies, BD would be a big improvement if you're comparing the BD with the old SD release.  But if you're comparing the BD and the newly remastered SD of the same catalog title, the BD would still be better of course, but I guess the improvement would be only minimal.

However, I also think that BD is capable of giving us a big improvement over the remastered SD for old movies as long as the catalog title was originally shot in large-format 70mm film.

For example, the BD might be much better than the latest SD version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, since that title was filmed in 70mm.  I think I'll buy that title one of these days.  Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia might also look great on BD when they come out.

Therefore, only he new movies made within the present time frame will look good on Bluray like Avatar, otherwise, it's much better to stick with the DVD versions of Jurrasic Park, Inidiana Jones or any of the good really good Criterion titles.

If you want to stick with SD DVD for Jurassic Park, you will have to get a remastered DVD when it comes out, because the current DVD release is really bad.

My copy of Jurassic Park looked great on CRT TV, but it now looks awful on my flat panel.

Another olddie: Sound of Music. Hopefully in future they will release this too. :)

As for Casablance (1942) which used 35mm, it manage to achieve 5-star PQ after the remastered superior transfer. The involved studio plays an important role too if they willing to spend time & effort to do a proper transfer.

On a separate note, the recent event of Gladiator Sapphire Series where after receiving "too many" outcries from fans, the studio finally decided to do another transfer. Hopefully, after the improvement, it will get at least 4.5-star rating similar to Braveheart. ;D

I'm waiting for a new Gladiator BD too.

I hear Casablanca is an outstanding catalog title BD, considering the limitations of the source.

On the avsforum BD tier thread, it's ranked 2.25 - Silver (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342)), a very high ranking for such an old movie.

Another oddie: Sound of Music. Hopefully in future they will release this too. :)

Ah, yes ... The Sound of Music is a Todd-AO 70mm, so it should come out as a terrific catalog title for BD.  Hopefully unlike Patton, also Todd-AO 70mm, but ruined by excessive DNR.

For Casablance, the studio did a grade-A remaster for the SD DVD reissue back in 2003 & later released in HD DVD. I own the HD DVD & the PQ is indeed outstanding for such an old movie. The studio did an awesome job! :o
Title: Re: Movies you want to see in Hi-Def
Post by: barrister on Feb 21, 2010 at 11:29 AM
I think they made an HD remaster of Casablanca even before they released the latest SD version, because they wanted to have an HD master ready for HD DVD and BD.

So when HD DVD came out, they used their HD master as source.  And when BD came out, they just cross-converted the HD DVD source to BD format.

Maybe the next remaster will be in 4K digital, like the one they did for The Godfather Trilogy.

The Casablanca BD doesn't beat Braveheart, which ranks 1 - Gold on the BD tier thread.  Expecting Casablanca to rank at Tier 0 or 1 would be asking for the impossible, I guess, but the Casablanca BD does beat a long list of much newer titles.

Quite an amazing feat by Warner's restorers.

Good thing you brought up this tittle. I totally forgotten about it. Saw this movie & like it very much but only now realize I don't even have the SD copy. Hopefully, it'll get the HD treatment in the near future. :)

BTW....to really get the real deal with Blu Ray, I was able to observe and watch the Samsung 55" LED Series 8 at Gadgets in Motion at the Shangrila, and for the 1st time I really saw the difference Blu Ray difference at 240Hz. Previously, the other panels just gives me a yawn(observed for a long time the Sharp 60" LCD at the MOA) ....but this time, it's really High Def.  ;) ;D

Oh... BTW,,,,it's the 1st Transformers movie that was being shown.

I really want to see a bluray version of "House of Flying Daggers." The echo dance is one of my fav demo scenes for sound, but the video is sooooo bad. Washed out colors. Blurred details. All sorts of artifacts. I've seen 3 different versions and they are all the same. I hope a Bluray would correct these problems.

And talking about Chinese movies, "Hero" would also be good on bluray, even if the SD version is already pretty good.

True. Many are disappointed with House of Flying Daggers poor PQ though the SQ is very good. It's a real shame.  :-[
Hopefully in future the studio will re-release a good transfer that will do justice to the film.

Both House of Flying Daggers and Hero have already been released on BD.

House of Flying Daggers reviews are also bad:

"It looks essentially like the DVD should have looked, not like an HD disc should look. In fact, I'd go so far as to say this is the worst HD image I've ever seen."

I'm really curious as to how Samsara (currently in production) will turn out on BD.  It's supposed to be a sequel to 1992's Baraka.

I hope Samsara's PQ will be even better than Baraka's.  Baraka was shot with Todd-AO 70mm, while Samsara was shot with Panavision System 65/Super 70.

IGN says the theatrical trilogy BD is not so good:

For such a highly anticipated release, you'd think New Line would put some time and effort into making the picture as clear, detailed and brilliant as possible. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Maganda raw ang Minority Report BD:

Release date: Apr. 20, 2010

According to the packaging, this Blu-ray release of Minority Report comes from a "Spielberg-approved HD Master," and the results are indeed spectacular. This 1080p, 2.39:1-framed transfer retains a finely-tuned layer of grain that sometimes swells to enormous proportions but nevertheless lends to the movie a wonderfully gritty film-like texture that allows for the retention of an awe-inspiring level of fine detail and gives the film, in conjunction with the spectacular special effects, the "glitzy-meets-rough" visual tone that accentuates the thematic elements of the story.

... Paramount has proven time and again that they're capable of delivering some of the absolute finest Blu-ray transfers on the marketplace, and Minority Report solidifies the studio as a leader in top-quality Blu-ray releases both new and catalogue.

Not a movie but a concert

Tina Turner Live in Holland 2009

- a recap of her stunning works in Amsterdam in 1997 and Wembley in 2000.  69 year old hot grandma of rock & roll.  still the same musicians, back-up singers and dancers - you got to see the dancers - probably the hottest group Ive seen in a concert!

Another classic film on the horizon:

Spartacus - 50th Anniversary Blu-ray on May 25th

It's another lousy release from Universal.  Professional reviewers say there's DNR, edge enhancement, and slight color error.

As my co-writer (Brendan) put it, he looks like he’s made out of wax almost or something even though the newfound amount of detail IS present, the choice to “smear” the noise and grain out was just a bad choice and in all honesty, LAZY. This is in by no means a real restoration and I guess that is to be expected out of Universal, a studio that is the oldest in Hollywood and also with that (as a result) owns the biggest library of classic films.

http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=43434

Robert A. Harris, who supervised the excellent restoration of Spartacus on the Criterion DVD, says:

All of the detail captured by Academy Award winning cinematographer Russell Metty’s meticulous large format Technirama camera, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Color Cinematography, is unfortunately also gone.

All high frequency information has been lost, and with it all of the detail in the image.

In its place the newly softened image has been electronically sharpened.  We now have a halos.  Contrast has been boosted to make the image appear sharper than it is, but this is perceived as opposed to actual sharpness.

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/300552/a-few-words-about-spartacus-in-blu-ray

GE (General Electric) now owns 80% of Universal.  Robert A. Harris thinks it's the corporate bosses who choose to cut costs rather than restore catalog titles correctly.

^ I'm sticking to my Spartacus Criterion DVD.

Waiting for Jurassic Park Trilogy in blu-ray.

Also, is there already a Kill Bill uncut version?  I checked Amazon Japan and they do have the twin pack there but no clue as to whether or not it is the uncut version.  :-\

Kundun was recently released on German Region B.

Too bad, a German review says the picture is not good:

http://www.dvduell.de/artikel/blu-ray-screenshots-kundun-1997-martin-scorsese/

Google translation says:

The moving life story of the 14 Dalai Lama says - in colorful, fascinating images, and thus a perfect Blu-ray experience!

A perfect Blu-ray experience? Not at all. From the fascinating images is not much left, because it was so with a DNR filters (Digital Noise Reduction handled) that in the first 22 minutes of the film absolutely nothing is left of detail. The whole is even considered so bad that it looks like a Photoshop filters, which will simulate an oil paint-painting technique

Yes 4:3 pa rin but in 720p.  Ang linaw but only 2ch stereo.  I really hope they'd release this one properly.

Thanks.

Expected ko na rin na 4:3, since AFAIK, This is It was the only MJ video originally shot in wide format.

But sound should be in 5.1 channel at least.

I adjusted the TV and zoomed the player to try to make it fit on a 16:9 frame.  The image was cropped but I think it would still look quite good when properly remastered.

The 2ch audio was surprisingly not bad at all - it was funky, however, songs where MJ sang totally live and with "vocal assistance" were very obvious.  Bistado sa malat...hehehe

ATTACK FORCE Z , if I'm not mistaken this was during 1980 w/c stars Gregory Peck & a young Mel Gibson where a group of special action forces was sent to a rescue operation & in the end only Gibson survive the ordeal where I think there where 8 of them, it was a good movie for its time, I cant even find it even on DVD :-\
