Spartacus: Blood and Sand is a Starz original television series that premiered January, 2010. The series focuses on the historical figure of Spartacus, a 1st century B.C. Roman gladiator, who later became the leader of a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic.
Has 4 aired episodes already. I haven't watched them fully, but the show has graphic violence & lots of nudity (my kind of show ;D)
I'm looking forward to this new series ;D

The violence and gore are done anime style with blood showering after a cut or severed body part/s, like Kill Bill. I'm liking the series so far.

They are heavily influenced by 300, even the showrunners admit that if it wasn't for Snyder's movie they wouldn't think this style would be plausible.

I saw the first few episodes then I tried watching it. Was a little disappointed if not for the female characters. I liked The Tudors better, a bit slow but the pace is in the dialogue.

Episode 12 is getting good reviews. Although we have to wait pa until tom para marelease. Excited na ako! hehehe. Naging fan ako ni lesley-ann brandt sa facebook and great thing is nakikipagcommunicate siya sa mga fans niya and even posting some pictures and answering sa discussion board. I became a fan even more. :)
Ako din sa simula sabi ko baka hindi ko ma appreciate ung show kasi medyo sobra sa cgi and baka alang kwenta storya pero habang tumagal it became one of my favorite series nadin. :D

Just started watching this last Tuesday, just in time for the season finale yesterday. Sex and violence, what more could you ask? ;D And a finale that was worthy of the first 12 episodes. Great series!

Not too much good TV shows this time of year so I am able to watch others which finished already like this one. Just finished the 13-episode first Season. A lot of blood, violence and sex so don't watch when the kids are around. It also sounded good in 5.1! For those who enjoyed 300, this is for you. I was greatly entertained! I am looking forward to Season 2 :)

According to Starz, Whitfield is "responding well" to treatment and will appear as Spartacus in 2 out of 6 planned episodes. The prequel series will focus on the rise of the House of Batiatus, the gladiator academy, and will revolve around the relationship between Lawless' and Hannah's characters, Lucretia and Batiatus.
"The prequel story maintains the excitement and entertainment value of the first season of 'Spartacus,' giving audiences the engaging experience they've come to expect," Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement released Tuesday, May 11.
"Fortunately, Andy is responding to his treatments, and will be able to be part of this prequel in a limited capacity."
When Whitfield is able to get back to work on a more regular basis, the "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" story will continue where it left off. In the meantime, Starz is casting a new character, who preceded Spartacus and Crixus as the top gladiator at the House of Batiatus.
Aside from Hannah, Lawless, and Whitfield, fans can expect to see more familiar faces among the prequel's cast members. Returning favorites include Peter Mensah (Doctore), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Antonio Te Maioha
 (Barca), Nick E. Tarabay (Ashur), Lesley-Ann Brandt 
(Naevia). Production will begin this summer in New Zealand.

Andy Whitfield, star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series' second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.
"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far," said Whitfield.
"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."
No decisions have yet been made about the future of the series. "Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. "We will address our programming plans at some later date."
Starz still plans to air the prequel to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" in January 2011. Entitled "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," it focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua and stars returning cast members John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Manu Bennett, along with newcomer Dustin Clare.

Almost finished watching all episodes and I think the crucifixion and castration scene is among the most gory examples I've seen. I think all of the lead characters are flawed in one way or another with only Ilithyia being the outright villain. However, Viva Bianca has one of the best female figures and a great flirty voice so it's always a treat watching her. She isn't a true blond but that doesn't matter ;)
Even if this series doesn't get another season, the 1st season is a landmark series that pushes the boundaries of sex and violence. I think Caligula would now seem tame compared to this.

The 6-part prequel miniseries Spartacus: Gods of the Arena debuts on January 21, 2011 on Starz.
The actual second season is in limbo, since they're recasting the lead role due to the recurrence of Andy Whitfield's cancer. Not sure on the status of that.

Starz confirmed today at the Television Critics Association press tour that the second season of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" will start shooting this spring for a 2012 premiere.
The big question is who will replace the cancer-stricken Andy Whitfield in the title role. Starz says they have not cast the role yet but that the field of candidates is narrowing.
The "Spartacus" prequel, "Gods of the Arena," debuts on Friday, January 21.

Australian actor Liam McIntyre is taking over the role of the Thracian warrior sold into slavery in the Roman Republic city of Capua – where he rises to become the champion of the city – before leading the slave revolt that ended Season 1. The part was played in the first season of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" by Andy Whitfield, who was forced to leave the show in order due to health issues. Whitfield gave his blessing to the recasting.
"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead 'Spartacus' forward," Starz's CEO Chris Albrecht notes. "It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."
Liam McIntyre made his mark in his native Australia on such series as "Neighbours" and "Rush." He also appeared in the HBO mini-series "The Pacific." He recently completed his first feature starring role in the independent film Frozen Moments. McIntyre is currently in New Zealand, getting himself into gladiator shape in order to take on that iconic role. Production on the series is slated to resume by spring of 2011.
From the time "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" debuted on Starz in January, 2010, it established itself as an epic production with rich storytelling and visuals unlike anything seen previously on any TV show. Audiences responded immediately, making it the most-watched premiere in Starz' history, and making the show the most watched cable program on nearly two-thirds of the Fridays it aired original episodes.
Also starring John Hannah as Batiatus, Lucy Lawless as Lucretia, Peter Mensah as Doctore, Manu Bennett as Crixus and Viva Bianca as Ilythia, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" was one of the most talked-about and best-loved TV shows of 2010. Viva Bianca has the perfect voice, looks and figure. I think she will be more prominent in Season 2 along with the consul in light of the bloodbath in the House of Batiatus.
Whenever I see Peter Mensah's Doctore, I always say to myself "Earth and Water" after his lines in "300".

M A L A K I. Pero di rin nakahintay because to my surprise, my wife liked Spartacus and hindi makahintay na ipunin pa yun buong 2nd season to watch.

I have to say compared to the finale of Season One of Blood and Sand, it was a rather subdued finale. I was expecting more sex, violence and camp. They're what make the show as much fun as it is.

"Gods of the Arena" was produced as a bridge season of sorts while Andy Whitfield was recovering from his first bout of chemotherapy, in hopes that he would fully recover and be able to return to his role for Season 2.
When his cancer recurred as they were preparing for season 2, he had to drop out of the show. After debating whether to continue with a new actor or cancel the series, they decided on the former. Liam McIntyre was actually cast as Spartacus months before Whitfield died. They had a press release saying Whitfield approved of his replacement.

Starz today announced the premiere date for the final installment of their highly successful "Spartacus" franchise, "Spartacus: War of the Damned," which will return on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT.
"Spartacus: War of the Damned" takes place following the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber. Spartacus and his men have amassed major victories against the Romans after the Battle of Vesuvius. These victories have not only forged the legend of Spartacus, but have greatly increased the ranks of the rebellion slaves to more than 30,000. Rome is indeed beginning to tremble at the threat Spartacus now represents.

Late to the Spartacus party. Just got Gods of the Arena and Blood & Sand on blu ray. Haven't seen Vengeance yet.
I'm a sucker for MILFs so I find Lucy Lawless super hot. Although...watching the special features behind the scenes, parang lola na talaga si Lucy Lawless without the make up. Parang average, middle-aged caucasian.
As for the discussion about S1 and S2, I consider Gods of the Arena as S1 and Blood & Sand as S2, coz I'm OC like that.
Very unfortunate that Battiatus was killed. Loved him in Gods of the Arena. Si Gannicus din ok na Gladiator. As for Crixus...well...I'd like to bang the domina of their ludus. haha

Just did a marathon of season 3 episodes yesterday. Very nice. Sad for the demise of the Gaul but he was begging for it eversince he thought he could be a better leader than Spartacus.
Great play by Crassus on letting Ceasar infiltrate the rebels. Si Tiberius sarap upakan ng todo. haha

My gosh beyond remarkable! Adrenaline pumping, sadness and happiness mixed together, what an incredible ending! :) :'( I feel both happy and sad after watching it. The consolation is that Spartacus died a free man as he had wanted.

Epic indeed. Just finished watching episode 6 to 10. Sad to see a lot of the rebels fell but it was indeed a victory for them. Nabawasan na naman ako ng susundang series.

Just finished watching the finale yesterday after going through season 3 in 3 days. I was somewhat put off by the way our heroes treated their prisoners but the final two episodes made me forget all of that. The finale was just the perfect sendoff to our heroes which is so hard to do correctly. I hated the way Braveheart ended even if it was historically accurate. who want's their hero to die like that?
What I have to say is that the entire series also had phenomenal casting. the Australian showbiz industry sure has a lot of good actors and actresses who wouldn't have gotten noticed if not for this series.
Gorgeous women like Viva Blanca, Gwendoline Taylor, etc.
Notable actors who had prominent genre roles like Craig Parker (Haldir in LOTR), Lucy Lawless, (Xena), Jaime Murray (Dexter), Anna Hutchison (Cabin in the Woods), Peter Mensah (300), John Hannah (the Mummy)
Even actors who seem to channeling other famous actors/media personalities: Caesar (Brad Pitt), Tiberius (David Archuleta), Varinius (Peter O'Toole), Heracleo (Alice Cooper), etc.
At least, I haven't finished Gods of the Arena yet so I still have something to look forward to. Continuing the series with Caesar and Crassus wouldn't be the same. They're the villains of the series and it's hard to side with them. besides, that would be retreading what was done before in Rome which was a phenomenal series in it's own right.

I was hoping na sana nga nabuhay si Spartacus man lang in the end. i guess the writers of the series really went on how the rebellion end on the history. it was still a good show, lalo na yung first season. Damn, ang ganda nung partner ni ganicus. I forgot the name, pero hindi yung german. Ang innosente eh haha

HBO's Rome is quite good. It doesn't have the hyper saturated and slow mo gore and violence of Spartacus but it has more of the political and sexual maneuvering that is only hinted at Spartacus.
