Title: High gain projection screens?
Post by: SymphonyX7 on Oct 06, 2010 at 09:22 PM
Anyone know where to buy a projection screen? Preferably one that's high gain and at least 65" x 65". I've been looking everywhere and the only projection screen I've found is the screen that Acer gives away with its projectors and can be bought at 3,600 Php separately. It's 70" x 70".

yun nasa Listen up is not widescreen 16x9 but AV format na 4x3 ..

The price is good enough even to just cut away the screen material and make a fixed framed 16x9 of about 106"

I know the feeling kapag binababa mo, may malakas ng vibration.  ;)

I mounted my PJ screen muna sa slotted angle bar. Manipis din kasi ang ceiling plywood dito. Around 3/8" lang. So after mounting the screen sa slotted angle bar, halos every 6", i screwed teh slotted angle var sa ceiling. Na-minimize yun vibration.
You can also insert some fillings like wood chips or blocks along the space between the PJ screen casing and the slotted angle bar para mabawasan pa ulit ang vibration.

Patayin mo electric fan mo.  ;)        ;D

Kiddin aside, i also tried adding a bit of weight sa dulo ng pj screen. Gumagalaw pa din. You can try stabilizing it with rods mounted at the wall and floor. Hassle naman. Kaya most PJ users choose fixed wall mounted PJ screen. Wala pang wave yun screen etc.

Our ceiling is hardylight/hardyflex so I cant really use screws and obviously the ceiling wood joists are not exactly where you want them to be. To add, we have a 42" plasma that is wall mounted - so my only solution was a wall type PJ screen bracket that also extends from the wall.

Im still using the inexpensive manual pull down screen sold by brader Ricky years ago - ok pa sya  ;D

brader mac, diy ba yang pj bracket mo? ang linis at ganda ng pagkagawa.

question lang sa mga pj master at gurus. if using the projector distance calculator, yong screen width ba ay ang measurement ng projection screen (white screen only) and not including the black border? usually how wide is the border extends on each side? just checking the maximum screen size my wall can accommodate. i have 101 inches of space in between the inner side of the wall-mounted speakers.

I think it's the white screen width. Black border will depend on our design. Nakakakita ko ng mga designs na malalaki yun border as in mukha siyang malaking dark background ng white screen. It has an effect of making the white screen float. Mga iba naman, 1/2" border lang, halos walang border, just enough lang to cover minimal excess picture. Pwede din naman black non-reflective stones or wood ang background mo since Zen style ang house mo. Alam ko talaga, there's no rule of the thumb with regards to border size.

Bro gnew, based from my screens, pag galing china iba iba basis nila ng measurement :-[ sometimes included sa screen size measurement yung black bars sa side sometimes hindi( maybe sa screens ko lang kaya class B ;D). But what i noticed is all side black bars are no more than 2in lang on each side kaya sa computation halos 2in din lang ang diff sa diagonal size which is considered negligible na ???

thanks bro nelson and bro ricky.

i forgot to mention that i have a plasma tv, so the screen i'm looking is a manual pull down type. how long is the rod end that extends from the screen edge? i may take that into account also as it will be the ones that will hit the speaker once the screen is lowered.

Usually 2in ;D(lahat na lang 2in)din lang yung laki ng housing on both ends. Kung may plasma ka sa likod its better that you use a motorized screen esp if your ceiling is bit high and your height is on the low side naman ;D may chance kasi tamaan yung monitor pag nireretract na at accidentally mabitawan :(

Correct ka jan.  ;)

Kaya yun manual screen ko, i have to pull it slightly palapit sa akin before retracting it to make sure na hindi tatama sa TV ko.

Ganyan din naisip ko 2yrs ago when nag-pj ako - but really became non-issue for me. While maganda talaga ang motorized screen - I guess I just didnt want the complexity of another small remote that could be lost, dealing with motors when it breaks down or a long extension cord up on the ceiling for electricals.

But ultimately, to each his own  ;D

included na lahat yan. i also use the bracket c kind. since its got two angles, you can use either angle to get the right clearance. if my memories serves me right, one angle gives you a clearance of 10" and the other 15 or 16" from the wall.

i utilized the 10" wide enough for my lcd screen. 1400 nalang pala ngayon, i bought mine at 1800.

Sirs is there a big difference between the various commercial projector screens that are sold between the 8-12K range vs a DIY screen made with black-out cloth?

I just have a budget HT projector set-up (but its a decent 720p pj) and I dont want to spend another 12k just for a screen if home made screen worth 1k will be almost the same.  I only watch at night and my projector does a measured 800 lumens while in film mode and has good contrast (based on online reviews) so its pretty bright. Thanks!

Imho if hindi ka naman maselan and hindi mo naman iview-view ng side by side yung DIY vs branded then I guess ok lang yung diy, heck even a wall painted with white flat-semi gloss paint would suffice na. Just make sure lang na after spending some money on your diy eh hindi ka na maghahanap pa ng branded kasi that would only make your cost bigger :) 1t diy plus 12t branded ;D

One of the knocks against projectors has always been that they're not able to perform to their fullest unless the room is completely dark, but that may finally change if some researchers from Japan's Tohoku University have their way. They've developed a projector screen based on Diffused Light Control (or DLC), which allows only the light from the projector to be diffused towards those looking at the screen, while all other ambient light is either absorbed or reflected away. Of course, that doesn't mean the screen is quite ready for your home theater or boardroom. As you can see above, the current screen is made up of small panels that leave some noticeable seams, and it apparently still has considerable trouble in direct sunlight, although the researchers are confident both of those problems can eventually be overcome. Head on past the break to check it out on video.

Buhayin ko lang ang thread na ito.  I'll be setting up my projector next month and I would like to canvass for a PJ screen as early as now.  Most likely I'll be needing a 90-100" motorized screen.  Saang store ba nakakabili ng PJ screen, yung meron silang display unit.  Most of the stores I've been to kasi only sell them on per order basis.  Mahirap din kasi yung oorder na di mo nakikita yung actual unit.  Which among the locally available affordable PJ screens is the best?

Where were you able to find an Elite screen? I'm looking for a 100" to 110" manual pulldown wall-type at the moment. I'll be acquiring an Acer H5360BD or Optoma HD20 this summer. It's difficult looking for screens. The only ones I found were in Sulit.com and they were Vega or Viewtech.

Marami namang AV stores na nagke-carry ng Elite screen.  You can PM Sir Vic of SnS or Otep_32 of Watt Hifi.  Problem is walang display units, per order basis lang.  I even emailed the distributor (Macrotech Tradehouse) to ask kung may showroom sila, wala daw

We sell 100", 120" and 150" 4:3 or 16:9. Both motorized and manual types.

Many members have bought from us already and are happy with the purchase.

It is in white casing with white screen in black border (about 1 1/2 inch border).

what is the correct screen type to match a high-lumens PJ, gray or white?

is it necessary to get a high gain screen if throw distance is about 14 ft and aiming to a 100-110" screen?

room is not pitch dark during daytime, with light leaks from the curtain edges. but it can be a bat cave at night.

With high lumens I think it does NOT matter what screen you get ;D bec even with the lights on ok pa din yung brightness and contrast level nya ;)

bro,

pacheck naman itong model and recommend a PJ screen. area is 3.7m deep x 3.0 m wide (where the screen will be)   depending on the max display i can get out of my existing area.

foregoing Plasma coz its darn difficult to bring that home given the size. Is Panasonic AR100, one of those with high lumens   light normal light conditions but if not can manage the room to go low-light.

my room is odd kasi may door sa right kaya 3 m wide.
Title: Re: Projector screen
Post by: Weng! on Mar 07, 2012 at 06:24 AM
panny AR100 ang high lumens PJ na plan ko kasi mura sya ngayon. pero if your room is totally light controlled di daw maganda ang AR100 sa sobrang liwanag.

i am aiming for a PJ that works well with ambient lighting. ayaw kung mangangapa especially when food is involved ;D

Before there were screen gains 2.0 and above. Because back then the technology of projectors werent as bright as those today.

With lumens increasing with the current crop of projectors today, you wouldnt need as much gain as before.

There is really no ideal, it all depends on you (just like your ears picking the right speaker). A gain of 1.3 is just right for me IMO. DIY's even have a falt gain of 1.0 and are happy with the outcome. So your eyes will really be the judge.

Image taken from a fixed frame of Elite screen.

Question lang po sa mga gumagamit ng motorized or manual rool up screen.  Does the screen sway when airconditioning is turned on?  My aircon is at the back wall, roughly 12 feet from the front wall where I intend to mount the screen.  Napansin ko kasi na yung blinds on side wall sway gawa ng aircon.  When I go to the front wall, I can still feel the air movement there, no matter where I direct the aircon louvre.  Am a bit worried that screen movement might affect our viewing experience. On the other hand baka naman hindi rin mag-sway yung screen because of the weight of the bar attached to the lower part of the screen.  Ano po ba ang experience ninyo on this?

yes. there is a possiblity that it would sway. But adding weight sa bar that you were mentioning would help lessen.

The Kuro is an excellent TV but I think you'll enjoy movies more on a projector set-up. Go for at least a 100" screen. Bigger is usually better as long as your room will allow. I'm sure you'll not regret it. ;)

Actually dumating na yung Optoma HD33 (1080p, 3D) pero I dont have a screen yet (I'm just projecting it sa wall muna) since I'm having a hard time deciding between a fixed frame or a motorized screen (double setup with the plasma at the back of the motorized screen).  Unfortunately, maximum screen size that I can use is 92" which is pretty big na rin.  I'm leaning more on a fixed frame (Sable or EZframe) 92" screen. Forexworld gave me a price quote of $50 for seafreight. Will probably order na rin. Yes, watching movie on a PJ is really much better than watching on my plasma.

$50 shipping is cheap for a 92" pj screen. What is the size of the shipping box?

I was quoted $120 by forexworld on a 106" elite manual screen using this shipping box dim, 103"x5.5"x5.5" & 25 lb weight. But this is the quote including delivery to leyte though.

ok na ko sa baby brother nyan. Wait ako from Gnew if game na siya, copycat lang ako.

Hi bro,

I will probably order the ar100 by this week from visual apex. I will pay them through wire transfer as HSBC only charges $28 for the wire.

Amazon sells the ar100 from a 3rd party seller at a slightly higher price than visual apex.

Decided na ako sa 92" fixed frame, easier to maintain than the motorized or manual ones.  Besides, the only reason I want a motorized is para mailagay ko siya in front of the plasma.  But if I mount it in front of the plasma, the maximum screen size that I can use is only 84"

ok sir will inform you asap. pwede pala e checkout through amazon ang mga items ng visual apex. this is good for us who likes to use a philippine-issued credit cards.

itanong ko pa sa visual apex kasi nag try ako mag check out, may naka pending na tax. di ko tinuloy kaya di ko alam kung may tax pa sa california.

Meron (PM mo si Otep_32). Unfortunately, what they have is EZframe 84" and 100", walang 92" so no choice ako but to import.  Anyway, much cheaper if I get it sa amazon then shipped via forexworld, matagal na hintay nga lang.  In the meantime, mag-DIY muna ako na plywood screen.

pare pag california address may tax, anywhere else wala. i think it has to do with their electronics recycling kaya mandated yan sa sellers. daya nga eh, cheapest sea freight sa cali, madadale ka naman ng tax. pero check mo anong options.

Meron computation yan bro. Viewing distance either 3x height or 1.5x diagonal of the screen, although some people just maximizes the wall size for the screen and some also just takes into consideration the length of the room. Safest is Matt white but this is the type that easily gets dusty and medyo harder to clean after a while. But hey dito sa pinas yung Matt white will become gray after a while so ok na din ;D

I agree.. maganda idea mo sir para masigurado talaga kung gaano kalaki ang gusto mong screen. Sometimes mahirap nga magrely sa formulas like what happened to me.. 92" lang kinuha ko na screen as recommended by the shop where I bought the projector set-up. Yes this is a good calculator.  Recommended viewing angle can be as much as 40 deg for a particular viewing distance and diagonal screen size.  THX recommendation is around 36 deg.

But to be sure, hiram ka projector kahit na ung pang classroom lang, then project to your desired screen size and determine the best viewing distance for you.  or adjust the projected screen to your comfortable viewing for your desired viewing distance or vice versa.

My viewing distance is roughly 10 ft.  Plan ko rin dati motorized screen in front of the plasma, but that would further decrease the throw distance, so I decided na fixed frame na lang.  Napansin ko rin kasi na yung roll down screen has a tendency to roll at the edges

Pwede naman mauna screen kasi you just have to consider yung viewing distance mo. From that viewing distance meron ng recommended size, from that size either you GET that size, Get a smaller size( based on budget and wall size) or GET a bigger size( again depending on budget and wall size where you will install the pj) decreasing or increasing screen size of 5"-8" is not that critical so i suggest you get the bigger size that will correspond to your viewing distance and wall size.

Tama madami ang online calculator check ng viewing distance and screen size para makuha agad ang size ng screen na puwede sa room size pero as for me i just need to check ano maganda na viewing size according to my my eyes mahirap naman kaya ng 120 inch sa room ko kung in the long run masakit din sa mata ko. Saka i need to consider din my family's viewing kung ok sa kanila ang ganung size and viewing distance. Kaya PJ muna ako kesa sa sabay sila kahit na alam ko na kaya ng wall and viewing distance.  ;D ;D ;D

Ayus yan brader mukhang same tayo ng viewing distance. Max size na ba yung 92 inch sa layo na 10ft? Hindi mo ba natry mag 100 or 110?  ;D ;D ;D

Max na ang 92" for my Optoma HD33.  Tingnan mo rin yung sa chart ng model na plano mo bilhin.

Huh? ??? From the start constant na agad yung viewing distance unless your room is so big that you can play with distance. Pero ganoon pa man, yung recommended screen size will be dependent on your viewing distance which is dependent naman where you will place your seaT.I'm sure alam mo naman seating arrangement mo? As for screen size, it is always advisable to get the maximum screen size you can depending on viewing distance. Although a smaller screen can be nicer to look at ESP if low lumens yung pj mo, but yung bigger screen naman is always the target kaya you choose to go the pj way.

Ngayon if you really want to actually look at size then another option is to put masking tape on wall corresponding to your estimated screen size that is dependent on viewing distance. Target here is minimize eye panning from left to right just to view the whole screen. Better if around 10" from both sides Lang ng screen ang mawala sa vision mo.

But hey it's your decision naman so it's your call. Ang point ko Lang is may purpose yan screen calculator kaya andyan yan ;) now if consider mo is model option then that's another problem, like if you want it fixed or retractable? If you want to have an extra monitor or not? Yan ang iniisip maige :D

Ano size ng binili kinuha mo brader?

Tama ba intindi ko dito,  300" diagonal at 10 feet ???

Max screen size un 300 inch.

Sample screen size using Epson 3010

3.8 Meters/12.6ft - 129 Inch
(http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3262/epson3010.png)

3.05M/10ft - 103 Inch
(http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/4158/epson301010ft.png)

9.08M/19.9ft - 306 Inch (Max supported screen size by epson 3010)

Ang ganda nang fix frame hayzzzzzz.. Ang mahal naman kasi eh grrrrr

Mas mahal sa atin brader yung manual nga na 120 inch nas 19k na. Pag check ko sa amazon nasa $135.35 +$50 and Elite screen Sable Fix Frame $377.39 +$50. Sa tingin mo mas mura pa din sa ibang bansa you need to wait nga lang ng one month.  ;D ;D ;D

Sirs, do I still need a black border if my wall (behind the screen) is already flat medium gray and I have a light controlled room? The wall appears black when I'm watching.

I was planning to buy felt tape to put a 3" border around my white blackout cloth screen but Im not sure its necessary.  Also my screen is 16:9 but my viewing is split between TV shows at 16:9 and movies at 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 so if I put a border it wont be effective when I watch movies.

Personally, I'd prefer to have a black border (for me felt paper is best).  If the wall behind the screen is medium gray, you'll still notice the light spillage and it can diminish your viewing pleasure.  Try first to put felt paper at the edge of your screen and compare the effect to the medium gray wall

Maganda Elitescreen, i understand the coolness of motorized pero at the end of the day, fixed screen for a dedicated HT would be my 1st choice.

i was searching for a 110" cinegrey screen from Elite but found none in their Sable and ezFrame series. i stumbled into Jamestown Home Theater Screens (http://www.jamestownhometheaterscreen.com/) at AVS forum looking for alternatives. they are a fraction of the cost of Elite and have good feedback (http://www.avsforum.com/t/1304049/jamestown-or-elite-please-advise) from 1st hand owners in the US. the sad part is, the lead time in owning one is very long and will take a month or more before the screen is shipped. the reason is, it's is a one-man show at his garage.

see unboxing and assembly of screen (http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/manufactured-screens/44058-jamestown-home-theater-screen-review.html#axzz2E24weX5i)

i emailed them to know the shipping box size of a 110" screen. at 68"x8"x8" box size, Forex quoted $85 for shipping to manila.

JT screen design is easy to build for the DIY'ers. i also found a seller of various Elite screen material here (http://www.standsandmounts.com/elitescreensprojectionscreenmaterialvarioussizeszr.aspx). it cost $194 for a 120" elite cinegrey, a far cry from the ready-to-assemble screen at $540 (excluding tax) at amazon.

Actually wala naman "ideal" brand for a particular PJ model.
You can even try muna a DIY screen made of plywood and paint it grey or white.
For me, I already tried the Elite Screen Cinewhite na fixed Frame and an unknown brand of acoustically transparent screen. And I'm very happy with the picture quality of both material.
Try also the screens of pekspert, madami na ding PDVD members na using it and they're satisfied, meron cyang manual pull at motorized screens.
Dami kasing projector screens, meron din yung high end na Screen Innovations' Black Diamond which I think mas mahal pa sa PJ natin ^-^

Ganyan din ako sa first screen ko. Technique lang yan. Honestly maîrap i-describe. Kapag pull-down mo, alalayan mo yun pull-down lever pataas para dumeretso siya. if you compare elitescreen's manual pull down and fixed frame screen, mas mahal ang fixed frame. just google or check amazon for price reference.

@pantellica,

you can also DIY the above elitescreen model using the same screen material for less than 10k.

Mga sir, anong screen ma-recommend niyo na manual lang? How much na ba manual screens and automatic screens ngayon? Can you recommend any brand na ok naman and hindi gaanong mahal?
Target screen size : 100-120”

for some price idea you check out the links below
ilang lumens ang pj mo? totally darkened room?

https://www.lazada.com.ph/shop-video-projector-screens/

note that some of these screens are just plain tarpaulin.

if you can also consider a projector paint, some say it's even beter

so meaning daytime viewing or ambient light present, kung may makukunan ka sana ng ALR type screen tapos I DIY mo nalang yung frame pwede sa ambient lighting yung pero some ALR screens have very narrow viewing angle.

Oh.. thanks. Nagreply ako dun before sir pero magiging fixed screen siya di ba? Problem is, may naka wall mount na tv sa sala, kaya either manual pull down or automatic na screen talaga.

ALR cloth is different from Blockout cloth right?

magkaiba ALR screen sa blackout cloth.. Blackout cloth is used to cover the windows to block ambient light from entering through the windows. The other side (white side) could also be used as a screen, but this isn't ALR screen

ALR screen normally is gray in color, contained more "reflective" elements on the screen to reflect as much light that is projected directly on it. While indirect light (ambient) is being "rejected". Adding more "reflective elements" has its negative effect, it will make the viewing cone a lot narrower or worse hotspoting...

Hello everyone. What color pj screen is best?

I also bought from Lazada to try it out after my original screen developed a sticky residue on the surface.

I ironed the screen and re-used the old frame, making sure that installation has enough tension. After a few days the creases were gone. For the price and brightness compared to my old screen, I can't complain.
