Thanks Nelson!

I'm actually looking for a 28" or 30" stand because the Mission's MV4 tweeters are now below ear level LOL.

Turbokiller will solve your problems at half the cost of branded stands.  ;)

nice setup sir, just wanted to ask if there's any issue with bass since your speakers are rear ported and against the wall, have the similar situation but my speakers are rear ported also but against a 1/4" wooden type of enclosure with around an inch or two allowance from rear port to the 1/4" wood thingy

thanks!

@ Nelson,

Does TurboKiller fabricate stainless steel speaker stands (and can be loaded with sand)? Where is he located?

@ Gabbby,

Yep it has been an ongoing issue with either the Acoustic Energy Evo 1 and now .. the Mission MV4 .. the LACK of bass.

Supposedly if I were still in our former flat in Cubao (all concrete) it would have been spectacular but since we're now in my grandma's place and its made of hardwood (narra) .. bass died a natural death, hence the need for a sub.

the speakers are toed in by about 5-10 degrees to the listening spot (rocking chair)

Perhaps I should get a front ported bookshelf (Klipsch RB-61/81, MA BX2)

@audiojunkie,

Thanks! =)

@Brian_Mico
Thanks! =)

Comparison of EVO and MV4

EVO1
(+) lower bass resonance (when I was living in a concrete flat, no need for a sub anymore)
(+) metal cones
(+) heavy built
(+) Diana Krall / Norah Jones sounds like they're doing a personal concert (singing front centre - and singing only to me)
(+) Bi-wireable / Bi-Amp capable

(-) cone moves too much and sometimes even bottoms out with R&B / Opera
(-) midrange is too controlled .. not much even
(-) sound staging is limited to the small sweetspot whether toed in or not
(-) lacks stereo imaging at low volumes
(-) requires a long break in period (took almost 2 months)

MV4
(+) SPECTACULAR soundstaging (even out of the box), goes without saying stereo imaging is there out of the box, and the sweet spot is now a lot larger.
(+) Midrange is better (after the break in) and Treble performance is a lot better
(+) cone movement is controlled even with heavy bass
(+) Larger/longer cabinet
(+) reveals bad mp3 recordings or CD recordings
(+) short break-in period (1-2 weeks)

(-) Bass performance is worse than EVO1s
(-) Lighter than the EVO1
(-) out of the box experience was really irrirating - midrange sounds similar to karaoke machines in raon
(-) No bi-wiring / bi-amping capability
(-) Norah Jones and Diana Krall now seems to be staging a concert for everyone, not just for me (you can hear the background in the live performance .. as if you're just one of the audience)

I think they're really supposed to be that way, that's the idea behind the "Inverted driver geometry for time alignment" concept.

True.

Except that...the MV4 'sounds' funny where it is installed right now (on the pedestals)

I discovered only a few hours ago during a music chill-out session when I was 'it' (was the one left without a chair and I sat on the floor) it sounded a lot better me sitting on the floor than me on a chair.

change chairs perhaps?

Oh my gulay. monster PC yan ah!  :o

Thanks Tein,

Actually the HTPC came as an afterthought .. I'm using the rig more on gaming, nevertheless its glorious for personal HiDef movie watching (1-2 feet feet from the screen) and mostly on the headphones (senn HD280) for both gaming and movie watching.

adjusted the speakers (1m behind the back wall with the painting)

adjusted my seat location (opened the balcony door for open-air listening)

result: norah jones, diana krall and frank sinatra are back doing private concerts for me.

adverse reaction: The MV4's vocal performance exceeded my expectation. Way back then with the evo I can listen to music with all lights off and they'd sing in far behind, now the staging area became closer that I just had to turn the lights on just to be sure its just the CD and not ole' blue eyes haunting me.

as for the 'upcoming' speakers...

So far, its a 4 way tie (as far as my idea of imaging/clarity/bass is concerned) to the following BS below the 18K range

1. Klipsch RB-61 - 'Nelson's little HHOORRNNSS' and my first love in spectra ever since i've listened to them circa 2006

2. Infinity Primus 162 - officially scratched off from from my boyfriend's list when we auditioned it with an HK 3490 - 'magulo ang tunog' according to him

3. Mordaunt-Short Aviano 2 - sounds 'ngongo' when auditioned with a CA 840 amp+CA 740 combo in 5th avenue, hoping it will change for the better if bring in my HK 3470.

4. Polk RTi A3 - Listened to this last night at ehome paired with a logitech squeezebox+Bada tube/hybrid amp - I must say the highs are better than the klipsch, but the bass lacks somewhat but I can't be sure until I audition it with my HK3470.

have you listened to Paradigm Atoms?

have you listened to Paradigm Atoms?

Oh yes, auditioned them at Spectra a week ago. Cute and able sounding speakers, perfect for my PC should I convert it to a 'proper' HTPC.

But that's all there is to it, cute. Tinny bass that's the problem although I cant blame the atoms because of its smaller drivers.

Then again, the Paradigm Titans IS ANOTHER STORY. I love it but yes it also happens to belong to another income tax bracket level of several orders of magnitude.

anyway,

Final audition of the 4 shortlisted speakers with the HK3470+Pioneer DV595 DVD/CD/VCD/MP3/WMA Player

1. Klipsch RB-61 - 'Nelson's little HHOORRNNSS' - Still my reference sound for bass, treble, midrange, sound staging and imaging.

2. B&W 685 - way out of my budget (26K cash, 29.5K card according to the snooty sound dimension sales person) but I auditioned it with the HK 3470 anyway (as stand-in to the now scratched off Infinity Primus P162). The B&Ws had PERFECT bass and midrange, SPECTACULAR sound staging/imaging, Highs were ultra refined but lacked that 'tingling' sensation I was expecting.

Note: B&Ws were also the snootiest speakers in the shortlist - perfect with jazz/instrumentals/classicals and vocals with the HK. It sounded crass with rock/dance/MP3s. (i can now hear tormentor say "pairing.. pairing")

3. Mordaunt-Short Aviano 2 - it sounded 'ngongo' with the Cambridge Audio equipment, although it improved the bass and highs enough paired with the HK 3470, alas, it still lagged behind the Klipsch RB-61 as reference for midrange and highs.

4. Polk RTi A3 - Lacked bass with the bada tube amp, but got PERFECT scores with bass and treble (tingling treble reminiscent of the KEF Q50 of a neighbor). Midrange performance isn't as good as the B&W 685,but the sound staging and imaging is at par with the B&W as far as my ears and equipment are concerned.

Verdict
Winner: Polk RTi A3s
1st Runner Up: Klipsch RB-81
2nd Runner Up: B&W 685 (if it were priced at 18K it would have ended at 2nd)

Thank you speakers: Infinity Primus P162, Mordaunt-Short Aviano 2

Finally, after several weeks of auditioning, tedious to and fro equipment shuffling,

Thank you Mel (Rascal101) for visiting yesterday afternoon.

Now you heard the wisdom behind the my max bass+treble on the tone controls while listening to music with all the racket happening on the street below with the balcony open.

Thank you for letting me audition your X777 passive linestage attenuator + new coils

Thank you also for letting me hear your new speakers.

I now have better understanding on the kind of sound you want from your set-up.

I think that next time I should visit much later hopefully with Joey. That way there is no background noise  :)

Yep! the racket dies down around 8pm, but perfect auditioning conditions happen 10pm onwards if you want the balcony and street all to yourselves.

As you well know, my Klipsch sub is currently on the chopping block supposedly to be replaced by a Polk DSW 500 Pro.

I'm currently auditioning the Polk DSW 500 Pro at home.

Lots of thanks to Richie (it is his personal sub) of E-Home trading.

Standby for verdict..

Let's just say if the Klipsch gets withdrawn, you guys know the reason why.

FYI

My Klipsch sub is officially withdrawn, ergo it was fun pitting it against the Polk Audio DSW Pro 500.

Klipsch is it when it comes to music as far as we're concerned here.

Thank you Rascal101 (Mel) for coming over a couple of days ago for a visit/audition.

As usual, hope you like our version of congee.

Thanks too for the snacks and treats.

Your newly redesigned X77 and accompanying coils is a triumph!

Now that's what I call a 'bright' and 'holographic' idea.

Dagdag-Bawas mode muna..

Bawas ng stands, DVD Player, dumi unused cabling

Dagdag ng screws (finally had the time to mount the RTi A3s on the wall), Waxed the floor

Well its been several weeks na wala yung stands, the bass from the speakers improved A LOT, imaging is still holographic although since the only place we can mount the left speaker on the plywood wall is on one of the inner hardwood frame (about 2 feet from where the speaker stands were located) - the speakers got closer together.

The result is the 'sweet spot' got smaller and moved forward a bit ok pa rin since the speakers are now more intimate when the sliding door is in the 'closed' position.

So far the 'magic' of the power port on the RTi A3 is still working its charm

my Polk also improved its bass when i mounted it to concrete wall, but it lessen the imaging.
btw, are u eying a polk lsi7 or 9? the lsi series is a bit laid back and warm speaker and for me not good matched with HK.There is something missing, and i think lack of dynamics and lively presentation.just my 2 cents. :)

Well the RTi A3s are currently mounted on a wooden wall (more like a partition wall kinda thing) and I may be lucky with imaging that is still there.

As for my next speakers .. Im thinking LSi 7 or LSi 9, depends on the outcome of the audition at AVshop with my HK 3470 stereo receiver.

I'm thinking you may get varied results between the AVR85, HK3470 and the HK980 (which was the one I auditioned the LSi 7s at AVShop) so im not taking any chances.

Im also aware that the LSi 9s dont have a wall mount unlike the LSi 7s hence may perform differently under certain configurations

Lots of variables hence im taking my time.

Between standmount and wall mount, the only difference in my case (RTi A3s) were the smaller sweet spot - dynamics and presentation are still very much there - especially now when the sliding doors are closed.

Updates:

Finally got what I was looking for - an affordable DVD player that plays my ripped MP3s/WMAs and CDs without hiccups

- Samsung DVD-C350 DVD Player (1,690 bucks at SM Makati)

the selling/decision point was its discrete 24Bit/192KHz Audio DAC as compared to the onboard DACs of similar DVD players in its price class (Toshiba, LG)*

*according to schematics/service manuals I found floating around the net for the aforementioned players

although Im still mulling for getting a proper CD player (I'm thinking of Tormentor's CA-740C) probably if its still unsold by next month

I haven't tried the BX1, but if I base it on the B1, I still prefer the RTiA3 for SQ.

The B1s I have were treble shy even with the treble tone control on the amp on full.

I have to tweak the EQ on the sound card inside the PC (2Khz, 6Khz, 8Khz, 16KHz) + max treble on the amp just to cajole the MA B1s to sound like the RTi A3 with flat EQ on the sound card, and just simple adjustments to treble on the amp

kumusta tunog ng LSi9?

Hello ninjababez

Well, Lets just say my ears had an orgasm the moment Chris Botti played "Time to say Goodbye" and when Vangelis started to play movement #3 from Mythodea: Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey

I literally sold off my i7 gaming rig complete with everything including the kitchen sink just to get these speakers.

They're that good.

Of course, I did my homework first, started with a good foundation: a high current stereo receiver or a high current amp.

It brought down the Marantz PM45 to its knees with R&B and bassy jazz music, In as much as it sounds flawless with the same amp with vocals, orchestra or acoustic music.

The Harman/Kardon HK3470 was its favorite. It delivered what its supposed to although I may end up using a fan on the HK3470 since it got hot, not that alarming but im not taking chances.

Well, Lets just say my ears had an orgasm
not really familiar with the materials you mentioned but, NICE!  :)
I literally sold off my i7 gaming rig complete with everything including the kitchen sink just to get these speakers.
They're that good.
I was actually expecting this ;D
yung built quality palang mukhang mahal na talaga :)

The Harman/Kardon HK3470 was its favorite. It delivered what its supposed to although I may end up using a fan on the HK3470 since it got hot, not that alarming but im not taking chances.
HK and denon is what avshop (mark) recommends for polks  :)

Hi Mike,

Finally the "blind item" is in the house ;D. I really would want to listen "Way Down Deep" and some audiophile vocals in those speakers which I haven't heard when you auditioned them in Avshop. Hopefully I'll be able to listen to them once your setup is complete (with speaker stand).

Congrats  :)

1. Well any material you dish at it, the LSi9 really performs

2. The LSi9 despite its bookshelf size weighs 15KG EACH. It took James AND Rey to bring the box down to the cab.

3. HK is a known maker of receivers/amps with high-current capability; Denon's ultra high current model of integrated amps should also do the trick. So most likely my next logical upgrade is a more robust high current amp (Im thinking Adcom,Hafler,Parasound)

Oliver,

I have to find an appropriate amp first.

Don't worry, I know from the first time you went here you liked the fat sound of the HK3470.

Congrats on your new speaks.  :)

I've heard the LSi7 with HK990, the pairing was smooth, but too dark and a little dull for my taste.I'm not sure with the LSi9 though, but they say that its less dark than the 7. Would you think your marantz (if it had more power) be able to give the the LSi9 a bit of bite and sting in the upper frequencies, for some intensity?

most likely yes. It was straining with bassy passage. It was perfect if it were all just mid-high frequencies (opera/vocals/acoustics)

The new HK990 and the HK980 have digital (read: microprocessor based) tone controls, unlike the HK3470 and PM-45 which are completely analog.

I crave for bright sounding speakers, to the point that some people call it already harsh.

The powerport (Found on the RTi/LSi) basically has a cone that is centered at the center of the back port, supposedly the plate allows close placement on a wall or even flush mount without adding port noise / affecting bass performance.

Tip of the cone penetrates about half an inch into the center of the port, and the cone is shaped like mayon volcano.

On the LSi7 / RTiA1 / RTiA3 the powerport also serves as a wall mount

IMHO, placement of the power cone would be very crucial because it would also add "length" to the port. Can you try removing it and see if there's a diiference, assuming you will mount it far from the back wall.

@qguy, if you plan to DIY the power cone, i suggest that you do not follow the polk configuration. Better siguro kung mga at least 1" yun layo nun tip ng cone sa opening ng port.

width-wise the base of the LSi9 is a perfect match to your stands. length-wise the LSi9 is roughly 2 inches longer than the stands so the speakers are flush fit to the stands at the back while the front has a 2 inch gap.

also liberally used blue tac and thin bumpons at the bottom of the speakers for sitting snugly to the stands.

Thanks for asking!

=)

Unlike the power port on the RTi Ax (I had the RTiA3s) series of speakers that you can literally take off with 4 screws at the back, on the LSi7/9, there's no sign of how to take out the powerport. Im suspecting it is screwed from inside the enclosure.

The tweeter looks familiar  ::)  it must be good !!!

Its a ring radiator tweeter from Vifa Denmark.

Same ring radiator tweeters in other high end speaker brands

FYI Scan-Speak and Peerless have merged with Vifa in recent memory

We're located in a compound in Batangas City so we're kinda safe. Also the people in the compound are more into karaoke so my setup does not register with them..for now.

Guests who came in the other week dont even know the brands "Harman/Kardon" and "Polk Audio" so there you have it.

The 3470 performs fine. It has my ideal level of power, bass and treble. It sounds fatter though as compared to the 3480/3490. Its a rare find nowadays.

9 years is just about right since I got mine circa 2002. So your uncle's 3470 about the same age as my 3470.

its built like a tank, so most likely you only need to clean the internals and pots and that's it.

I am actually tempted to hail audiophiles from batangas city / lipa since moving.

Anyway, nakakaantok daw music ko especially when I listen to Chris Botti / Salena Jones in the morning.

Then again as for acoustics and ambient noise - nothing beats the province, kalaban ko lang sa gabi are the crickets, and the kids who tries to poke the speakers in the morning

updates:

LSi9s + HK3470 + CD collection are in AVShop (MLY Enterprises) and experiments are ongoing for bi-amping.

I may have to defer getting a replacement amp to the HK3470, and instead recycle it as LF driver amp, and get another amp for the HF drivers.

So far last saturday, the Rotel RA06SE (Preamp + Power for HF) + HK3470 (Power for LF) combo seems promising.

Updates:

Got myself a Rotel RA06SE Integrated Amp. I love the brightness and better bass control.

Will be back in AVShop to continue the bi-amp experiment with my old HK3470 as the woofer amp, RA06SE as the tweeter amp.

Thank you Marc, James, Rey!

Congrats Mikee! Big time ka talaga! ;)

Use bright sounding cables for the tweets (usually silver cables) and cables with good bass for the woofer (Ecosse comes to mind).

Enjoy! :)

yep, actually contemplating on the van den hull clear water silver cable for the HF, and retaining the tsunami competition AWG cables for now. Ecosse comes to mind too for the LF, kaso wala pa daw stock sa spectra

pictures to follow na lang since magulo ang mga bata dito sa batangas, probably will move my stuff from avshop after the holidays na lang para iwas pusoy LOL

Well the LSi9's LF performance is so-so with the current setup (RA-06SE+HK3470)

Actually busog ang woofer ng LSi9s with the HK3470, but when you compare it with the performance of the Rotel RB1582 (as woofer amp), night and day ang difference.

Bass is tight, clean and articulate even when loud sa RB1582, As for the HK3470, malakas and mataba ang bass, but it sounds 'muddy' - uncontrolled.

The Klipsch sub is just used when playing really loud, but for low to moderate music and during critical listening, the sub is off.

I started 'replacing' the interconnects with Cal's DIY IC's, got rewarded with better imaging and soundstaging with the LSi9s.

Brightness also improved A LOT

Thanks Cal!

Update:

After 2 years, my audiophile prayers have been answered!

I am reunited with my first love - The AE Aegis Evo 1 (in a different color though, but that's fine)

I know I should have not let go of that black AE Evo 1 one summer in 2010, then again foolish me.

Anyway moving forward, 2012 is beginning to be a very lucky year.

How did the AE compare with the LS ?

The LSi9 loses to the AE Evo1 when it comes to sheer brightness and small room dynamics at low volume levels, everything goes downhill though at loud playback levels

The LSi9 wins over the AE Evo1 to quality of bass+midrange+treble (ultra refined), wide soundstaging/holographic imaging whether low or loud playback levels

Also, I went back to the habit of fiddling with the bass tone controls with the AE Evo1 - todo bass at low volume levels, turning it half at moderate volume, then flat at loud playback levels, as compared to the LSi9 that its perfect at flat bass, whether its low, moderate or loud.

Still, the Evo 1 is a keeper despite its flaws, just like the LSi9s.

First love never dies eh LOL  :D

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

congrats MIKEE,dami bago :o :o araw araw pasko  ;D ;D

Di naman bago yung AE Evo 1 it was more like 4 years old pero di gamit (im still in the process of breaking it in since it sounded really unused as compared to the Evo 1 I sold 2 years ago), na miss ko lang yung AE Evo 1 and its idiosyncrasies LOL.

I wasn't actually looking for one when Bam! I bumped into someone in avshop last week that thought of selling his AE Evo 1 since it wasnt meshing well with his HT gear (pang audio lang daw maganda and sucked with HT performance), kaya ayun one thing lead to another and here it is now.

I was supposed to be in avshop just to make advanced payment for my orders and this situation presented itself kaya tinuluyan ko na hehehehe.

Patience do have its rewards =)

Luther, yes. Sweeter ang Evo1 with the Rotel, though its still perfect match with the Harman.

Hello Goodspeed! Nice meeting you too!

Well if I were you, why dont you save up for the 06SE - It has a remote (can also control Rotel CD / Tuner) and can accomodate beefier speakers which the 04SE may not be able to play nicely even in a small room.

I feel impoverished when compared to the owner of a Paradigm Reference Studio 60 V.5,  Anthem 225 Integrated Amp, Audiolab 8200 CD Player, Anthem MRX500 AVR and an SVS PB12-Plus Sub =)

Methinks you need to invest in another set of speaker stands for your AE.

For the me, the LSi 9 has more than enough bass for music.  The subwoofer is for movies, right?

Sub is used during parties / get togethers, or for loud listening levels. off for soft music/critical listening

My setup is mainly for music.

Yep, ganoon na nga. But before that, the Electricals / Data+Voice / CATV / CCTV muna, di alam ng electrician kung ano gusto naming mangyari hence I'm staying here kung saan ilalagay ang mga cables

Paul, actually the Harman/Kardon HK3470 +Samsung DVD/CD Player + AE Evo1 + Klipsch RW10 goes to our bedroom,

The Rotel group (RA-06SE + RCD06SE + incoming RB-1582) + Polk LSi9 goes to the 'black room' (according to my hubby Japz) - dedicated+treated audio room / computer room

Also, finally got the go signal to plan for the 7.1 HT for the living room.

Then there's the thing for outdoor speakers for the balcony, custom install speakers for the kitchen / bathroom

Ivan, Nelson, yep I liked the default (flat) brightness but I tweaked the EQ further to make it more lively which made made it to my list.

I'm just wondering if the USB 3.0 interface will make a difference (the pc you have there is just usb 2.0) but overall im satisfied with the usb 2.0 performance of the 03

I knew hindi ka makaka-tiis sa EQ.  :D

Yes it will supposedly add dynamics lalo na sa 03 model. I tried plugging it to my PC's USB 3 port. Unfortunately, hindi USB 3 native ang motherboard ko. But when my USB 3 powered ports arrived the other day, it's a different story.  ;D

Have you tried it on redbook quality music? Maganda din ang presentation niya.

The AVR, 7.1 speakers+sub choice will depend on how much real estate will be left when the carpenter finishes the bedroom, dedicated audio room, balcony and kitchen.

On our end kasi, the HT/Living room will only be utilized pag me visitors / get together / fiesta, unlike the other areas (bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, audio+PC room) na gamit na gamit araw-araw.

Derick,

Actually I only use the klipsch RW10 sub pag me party / get togethers.

Anyway

I was able to sell the Klipsch RW10 sub na to a non-PDVD friend who's building a mix use (5.1 HT/ Stereo Audio) setup.

Well for the Harman/Kardon HK3470 stereo receiver, I liked it with the AE Evo1 and with the Polk Audio RTiA3. Hirap yung HK3470 to drive the LSi9s hence the upgrade to Rotels.

The RTiA3s naman are easy to drive hence can be paired with vintage amps/receivers. It's good that you were the one who got it.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

He he he... Nasa batangas pa ba si sir Mikee? Mabisita nga minsan pag uwi ko..

I am currently in Batangas City, but I'll be in Manila tomorrow for a client. Nandoon parin sa MLY yung gamit ko.

I have not heard the PSB with the Rotels yet.

I have heard the PSB with HK, and I didnt like it since its too warm, the bass isn't also as fat as that of Polk.

Sir Mikee, inquire lang ako on the performance of RCD- 06SE when paired with your Rotel pre and power amp. How do you find the SQ, meron bang malaking positive effect. Currently I'm using a normal CD/DVD player paired with Rotel. Am thinking ( natutukso) of getting also the RCD 06SE kung justified. TIA

I heard the Image B25 + Harman Kardon 670 circa 2005 in spectra. I preferred the AE Evo1 + HK pairing over the PSB Image B25 + HK pairing at that time.

Now that I shifted to Rotel, I dont know how it sounds with the PSB.

Way back then Spectra only offered HK or NAD amps/receivers, Rotel wont appear on their stands till 2008.

I already PM'ed you my thoughts on the phono stage. Its shocking really.

Well if you are coming from a CD/DVD player from raon/quiapo or those DVD players from the appliance stores, ang layo ng difference as far as SQ, imaging and sound staging is concerned, especially if you have revealing speakers and a proper amp.

Even the audiophile branded DVD/CD/WMA/MP3 Players (Pioneer, Harman/Kardon, Onkyo) sounds different from their pure CD counterparts.

But of course the price of the aforementioned CD/DVD players are no match for the price of the RCD06SE assuming you buy it new.

I used to own a Harman/Kardon DVD21 DVD/CD/WMA/MP3 player. Then when it died, I got a Pioneer DV595 DVD/CD/WMA/MP3 player, thenafter a  Samsung DV350C DVD/CD/WMA/MP3 player, and I thought I was fine but SQ quality eventually showed itself when I shifted from the RTiA3s to the LSi9s.

With the AE Evo1s and Polk RTiA3s, I was happy with the generic DVD/CD player, it all changed when I got the LSi9s.

Let's just say that the LSi9s revealed a lot of the missing pieces being masked by the analog outputs of normal CD/DVD players, my samsung dvd/cd player included.

So, it really depends on what you already own now.

Anyway, ill just show the pics of the HT setup once it reaches Batangas City. My hubby gave me a provisional nod for the screen and media player, I just hope he will like the AVR and speakers LOL

Dapat two separate dedicated audio rooms na yan for your Polk and AE! ;D

Sorry for the late reply on this one Paul,

Well there will be a dedicated HT and Audio Room in Batangas, but only 1 each kaya I decided to go with the Polk LSi9s + Rotel for audio.

For HT, Just see the pics pag na order/deliver na LOL

I borrowed the camera from my hubby Japz (was lazy to post pics), and here are the pics of my stereo setup currently 'visiting' MLY Enterprises.

I haven't got the chance to bring them back to Batangas yet after the audition of the RB1582 because of the rains.

drumroll...

Oh, dunno kung bakit raming nag uupgrade to the 1582s, must be the copious amounts of power + price/performance ratio perhaps?

I actually ditched out the Kilipsch RW10 sub na nga since the LSi9s are producing really deep bass by itself after several days listening with the RB1582.

Sounds a lot better as compared to the Onkyo 818 overall for movies with the Goldenear grouping.

Sayang sana na audi ko rin yung Harman AVR460 ;D It looks like Harman na for you but don't forget that Onkyo has audyssey and the SQ will change for sure with audyssey calibration ;D Aside from that, 818 has Multi-eq XT32 at Instaprevue pa hehehe.. Anyway, you can't go wrong with either of the two AVR's naman :D

Stan, actually aside from the audyssey, Multi-eq XT32, instaprevue and the heavier build of the 818 (18+kg), it still boils down to sound quality for me. Mas engaging, immersive and emotional yung 460 eh, especially with bass / mid bass

Layo ng tunog ng 460 from the 818 with musicals (Chicago, Burlesque, Mama Mia, Dreamgirls), even with the musical scoring from films like blackhawk down, fast 5

although they are neck and neck with action movies, with the 460 having marginal gains over the 818 with dialog clarity

Pero that's without the audyssey and multi eq xt32 yet, off din yung EZ set ng HK.

Faroudja vs Qdeo pa pala, although I never got to see it working for upscaling yet, I still have to see the difference for myself

Mas madugo talaga sa HT. Lots of things to consider and lots of things that can go wrong and it's more expensive! kaya audition, audition, audition parin.

@mikee, dapat pala marinig ko set-up mo. 14 days (Sept 27 - Oct 10) naman bakasyon ko so marami akong time.

Hello Mel! good you'll be in town. Just text when you're in Manila.

Hah! I was eyeing for the Dynes Special 25 over the C1 LOL! Pero HT Project muna. I already heard them both in LIS na, although I havent brought the Rotels in LIS yet for further listening.

Updates:

Phase 1 Status

Instead of a media player and a bunch of HDDs, I got a Gaming PC instead, still comes with a bunch of HDDs.

1 SSD for OS+Apps, 1 HDD for StdDef movies, 1 HDD for HiDef Movies, 1 HDD for MP3s/FLAC/WAV, 1 HDD for documents, game installers, Tech manual PDFs and personal files

PC is based on the Intel Ivy Bridge + Intel Z77 platform with thunderbolt, featuring HDMI 1.4 / 4K support and a simple EVGA 580 GTX DS Video card for gaming

No plasma TV or AVR yet, but for the meantime I am languishing on a 24" Samsung 245B LCD Monitor (1920x1200) and a pair of el cheapo USB speakers.

AVR = Harman/Kardon AVR460 parin
Plasma = Panasonic 50 incher parin
Speakers = GoldenEars parin but im still waiting for the new triton 7 pair on how it fares when it arrives.

Hello Luis! For music hands down its the lsi9s over the lsim703 especially if paired with the Rotel grouping.

If harman or roksan or musical fidelity im extrapolating it will be the lsim703 but dont quote on me yet since again di ko sya napakinggan with those brands.

I am basing it on how i heard the lsi9 with the harman and roksan.

Mas me edge yung tunog ng lsim703 with harman or roksan because its brighter by a large margin.

Im taking roksan and musical fidelity will almost have the same character kaya it may sound the same.

The only way to be sure is to actually audition the lsim703s on your preferred or desired amp/equipment

your wait will be worth it. sabay raw dating ng GoldenEar SuperCenter sa Triton 7. ;)

The question is, kakayanin kaya ng AVR460 yung triton 7 since its all passive.

Maganda kasi sa Triton 2s me active sub kaya you only have to worry about the 2 small midbass eh

I may get the 7s cheaper pero kung kailangan naman ng matapang na power amp for the fronts then it defeats the purpose since pricewise halos ganun din.

Kasi ok na yung triton 2 + HK AVR460 combo

Well these are all conjectures for now and kailangan mapakinggan yung 7s with the AVR 460 muna

I've heard the Triton 2's powered by a Pioneer Elite AVR and they sound good. you'd probably want to add a power amp for the Triton 7. we'll find out when it's finally on our shores. :)

Hi Mikeer,
Just spent a pleasant few hours poring over your thread. You've proved it pays to have a little patience & thoroughly audition before you buy, nice kit. I'm sure you'll have plenty of fun with your HT, I've already got my gear but enjoying myself with the HT room design.
Congrats !

Iba bass ng old variants ng HK AVRs as compared to the newer models. As for Marantz naman, yung comparable specs with the AVR 460 is way above the AVR budget na eh

Hay Tatay Nelson, kung kaya ko lang yung 11.4 setup di mas ok.

I'm just sticking to 5.1 or sana 5.2 for that matter kung matuloy yung Triton2s

update lang

Simplifying the audio system to just the SACD Player and Power Amp.

Preamp is driven by the CS5VL's Headphone output connected via 6.3mm headphone jack to RCA connectors

Well, the bass got thinner and the treble got weaker, but the soundstaging got a lot better.

I'm just using an el cheapo RCA to phono connector and an el cheapo 6.3mm to 3.5mm connector. I should probably have Cal fabricate a one piece solution with his fabled cables

volume level is adjustable since the headphone out of the CS5VL is variable

Officially the HT project is on hold indefinitely.

Ergo I will be stuck with this 2 channel audio-only contraption for the foreseeable future.

Although I am still in the market for a decent preamp so I can use a hand-me-down Onkyo DV-SP500 DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 player as an audio only source.

Oh and thank you Edison for letting me 'borrow' your brothers' vintage Pioneer C21 preamp for a couple of weeks last April.

hi mikee. that was my observation too with a power amp and my computer sound card driving it. great transparency at the expense of bass.

sad to read that you are sticking with 2 channel. that's not so bad :).

if you're gung ho on getting into home theater, try getting one of electrohaus's receivers. something that has a pre out so you can use your power amp for the lsi 9.

do you have a tv na ? :D

Oh hello ToyFactor!

Well I take it you are using a decent sound card like an Asus Xonar, Auzen, Creative X-Fi, Onkyo, Turtlebeach

If so, you can control the bass output to your liking via the soundcard's control panel

If we are talking about the HP / Line out from the motherboard, you may want to use the X-Fi hack for realtek HD codecs if you want to control the bass.

You may also try going to the realtek sound manager on the control panel on windows 7 so you can tweak the equalizer so you can get better bass / treble response.

Well, The HT can wait. I've already factored in that the AVR i'll get MUST HAVE preamp outputs, although the LSi9 will still be for pure audio so there..

I dont have a TV per se, I do have a 24" 1920x1200 monitor though.

Change Log...

Got a good deal on a Cambridge Audio Azur 650A integrated amp and it will stand in as a preamp.

I don't feel confident that its 75w/channel (8ohm) rating is enough to drive the LSi9s to full bloom.

Pics to follow.

Powered by a well sorted Beta 22 solid state DIY amp, my Audeze LCD3 can provide a fuller and more enjoyable sound compared to my Accuphase / Harbeth stereo.  Main advantage is the bass.

Christmas is in the air w/ your new acquisitions!

Jen, hindi naman .. just my idea of retail therapy after the breakup.

Congrats! Daming into head-fi lately ah  ^-^
How is it compared to your stereo system?

It is not meant as a "comparison to" but as a "supplement to" my stereo system. =)

The headphones are meant to be paired to the same source and preamp feeding the LSi9s

Nice choice chief! congrats! O0

Thank you.

on another note,

I wish I were into open back cans, the Sennheiser HD700 / HD800 would have been perfect - basically Focal Utopia Be's crammed in between your ears.

Well they sounded like the Utopia Stella EM+VTL Siegfried Monoblocks during the last HiFi show.

I heard the HD700 / HD800 in Egghead paired to a headphone amp that looked odd - only gripe is since its open, you basically hear the cacophony of rob galleria food court

I think you are still required to listen to those in this chair for optimal enjoyment

haha! you probably heard it with Egghead's test rig: an ipod classic + a Cypher Labs Theorem DAC and amp. the Grado RS1i sounded chillingly good when I auditioned it with their test rig.  O0

Change Log:

Swapped speakers outside PDVD.

Owner and I swapped the following: my Polk Audio LSi9 in Ebony to his Monitor Audio RX2 in Piano Black Lacquer Finish.

Realizations during the auditions before closing the swap deal:

1. The Polks LSi9 loves vintage all this time! - worked extremely well with a vintage Yammie integrated of the new owner.

2. The RX2 Myth of 'too bright, too boomy' is busted - using my current CA Azur 650A as preamp, Rotel RB1582 as power. It is not too bright, it merely follows the recording. it is not boomy at all, its a matter of placement and/or use of acoustic absorbers.

3. The piano black lacquer finish on the MA looks more premium than the piano black laquer finsish on the LSi9.

4. The RX2 is a lot lighter (9.5KG RX2 vs 15KG LSi9 per speaker)

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Notes after a few hours of burning-in of the MA RX2 on my system:

1. The RX2 is only a bit brighter than the LSi9s, but its brightness is no longer 'beaming' (ergo: the sweet spot became larger)

2. While the LSi9 ring radiator brings treble airiness and quite forgiving with recordings, the gold dome C-CAM of the RX2 brings about brightness that goes with the music (linear?): If the recording is etchy - then you get it etchy ; if dull - then you get dull. (sounds more like a studio monitor to me)

2. RX2 has a larger sound-stage than the LSi9. Period.

3. Bass is more articulate - akin to me comparing bass of SVS ported [lsi9] vs SVS sealed[rx2]. The quantity of bass on both models are there, its just the texture of it.

4. The midrange became a bit more open with the RX2 - the voice has been moved from the front-center VIP seats on the LSi9, to the center stage itself on the RX2. Creepy but takes getting used to.

5. Since the MA's are now 8ohms (6ohms minimum), I will try using the internal power amp of the CA Azur 650A and ill see what kind of sound I get from it - I stopped attempting on using the outputs of integrateds when I had the LSi9s since only a very few integrateds were able to fully embrace it and let it bloom properly.

Pictures to be posted later, the house is a mess with the flurry of boxes from client's computer builds.
