Fox has greenlit a pilot for Locke & Key, based on the ongoing comic book maxi-series created by Joe Hill and published by IDW Publishing. Joe Hill's real name is Joseph Hillstrom King, and is the son of noted author Stephen King. The TV series adaptation will be co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks TV, and includes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Fringe, Star Trek) among the roster of executive producers.
Locke & Key tells the story of the Locke Family, notably Nina Locke and her three children, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bodie, as they recover after the murder of Nina's husband and the children's father. The Lockes eventually move into Keyhouse, the mansion passed down through their family's generations--a house filled with mysteries and supernatural entities.
Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings) has been cast as Nina Locke. Mark Romanek will direct the pilot, which is being written by Josh Friedman.

Jesse McCartney Joins Locke & Key
Feb 4th, 2011
Jesse McCartney has joined -- and should theoretically complete -- the leading cast of Fox's "Locke & Key" series, reports Deadline.
Based on the comic book series by Joe Hill and distributed by IDW Publishing, "Locke & Key" tells of Keyhouse, a New England mansion with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. The building is also home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all.
McCartney will play Ty Locke, the eldest child of the family, brother to Sarah Bolger's Kinsey and son to Miranda Otto's Nina. Nick Stahl is also attached to play Ty's uncle, Duncan Locke. Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go) will be directing the pilot.
McCartney is known best as a singer-songwriter but has done quite a bit of voicework, including Theodore in the Alvin and the Chipmunks films and Terence in Disney's direct-to-DVD "Tinker Bell" films. He has appeared on a number of television series in guest-starring capacity, including as a recurring character on "Greek".

Just finished reading the compiled books 1-3 of Locke & Key. Excellent story & art. Looking forwards to the release of book 4 near end of March. If done properly, this should be an interesting TV series.

Apparently, the pilot was made, but Fox did not pick it up for a full series.
From a SDCC 2011 Locke & Key panel report:
The first thing that the creators of the comics and the TV pilot writer wanted everyone to know is that the show was not going to be picked up, there was no chance that will be picked up in the future and the pilot is pretty much the only thing that we'll be seeing from a series based on the Locke and Key comics anytime soon.
-
I'm hoping that someone will pick up the series eventually--Joe Hill just won the Eisner Award for Best Writer, as announced last night at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con.

While Fox decided not to move forward with the television adaptation of Joe Hill's "Locke & Key" comic book series, a trailer for the pilot has come online:

While plans for a Locke & Key TV series have been derailed, a movie trilogy seems to have been greenlit, according to Roberto Orci's latest tweet:

Locke & Key Coming to the Big Screen
June 19, 2013
Way back in November rumors began to circulate that writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were circling a deal to make a trilogy of films based on the IDW comic book series Locke & Key. Today, The Hollywood Reporter says that this deal has finally been put into place and the feature adaptation of the comic will be coming to the big screen from Universal Studios. Kurtzman and Orci will produce along with their partner Bobby Cohen at K/O Paper Products. There's no mention of whether the pair will pen the screenplay for the film or whether a trilogy is still planned, as was originally rumored.
Locke & Key was originally planned as a television series at Fox, with a pilot even being produced, but it was eventually passed without a series pick-up.

Locke & Key TV Series Gets Pilot Order from Hulu, Scott Derrickson to Direct
Last year, IDW Entertainment and series writer Joe Hill revealed they were developing the hit comic series Locke & Key for television and now Deadline reports that the series has found a home. Hulu has officially ordered a pilot for the series, which has Carlton Cuse (The Strain, LOST) set to executive produce and showrun. In addition, Scott Derrickson, who just directed Marvel’s Doctor Strange, will direct the pilot episode and potentially helm even more episodes should it be picked up to series.
Locke & Key has had a long history of making it to another medium with Dimension Films purchasing the rights in 2008. Following that, a television series was in development at FOX in 2010 (which was even given a series order, but never went forward after the pilot was produced), and finally a failed film adaptation with producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in 2014 with Universal Pictures.

Hulu's 'Locke and Key' Casts Its Leading Lady
Four months after scoring an official pilot pickup, Hulu's Locke and Key adaptation has found its leading lady.
British actress Frances O'Connor has been tapped to topline the highly anticipated take on the beloved Joe Hill IDW comic series.
Locke and Key is a horror/fantasy series that revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.
O'Connor will play Nina Locke, the mother of the three siblings who moves the family to Maine after her husband's slaying.
Comic book creator Hill and Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel, The Strain) are collaborating on the script for the hourlong pilot. Cuse will exec produce alongside Andy Muschietti (It), Barbara Muschietti and Lindsey Springer, who serves as head of Cuse's production company. Cuse will serve as showrunner, while Muschietti will direct the IDW Comics drama. IDW Entertainment president David Ozer and Hill also exec produce.

'Locke and Key' Picked Up to Series at Netflix
After eight years and multiple writers and outlets, IDW's beloved comic Locke and Key is finally coming to the small screen.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix is near a series-order deal for the drama based on Joe Hill's graphic novel from showrunner Carlton Cuse. Netflix declined comment as deals are not done.
Sources say the streamer is in talks to license the rights for the IP and redevelop the drama with IDW Entertainment. The Netflix series is not the Hulu pilot. Instead, Cuse and Joe Hill will redevelop the series for the streaming giant with an entirely new cast and new director. Andy Muschietti, who helmed the Hulu pilot, is busy with IT 2 and is no longer available to direct. He will still be credited as an executive producer on the Netflix series.
Netflix's series pickup comes two months after Hulu surprisingly passed on picking up its Locke and Key pilot to series.

From ComingSoon.Net
Netflix Officially Orders 10 Episodes of Locke & Key TV Series
Netflix has officially confirmed that they’re diving into the world of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s comic series Locke & Key, giving a 10 episode order to the series which was previously in development at competitor Hulu.
Locke & Key is a horror/fantasy series that revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.
The IDW Publishing Locke & Key comic book franchise, co-created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, has garnered both awards and acclaim during its ten-year run; has been translated into dozens of languages across the globe; and has sold millions of copies worldwide.
Meredith Averill (The Good Wife) will co-showrun the series with Carlton Cuse. Cuse and series co-creator Joe Hill (the son of Stephen King) co-write the first episode with Aron Eli Coleite. The new series will not retain any of the cast or footage used from Hulu’s attempt at adapting the series, instead completely re-developing the series and re-casting the parts. The previous version of series’ pilot was directed by IT‘s Andy Muschietti.
Lindsey Springer for Cuse’s production company Genre Arts will executive produce alongside David Alpert and Rick Jacobs of Circle of Confusion. Andy and Barbara Muschietti (IT, Mama) will executive produce alongside Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment.
The failed pilot by Hulu is just the most recent link in the series’ attempts to come to life.

‘Locke & Key’: Connor Jessup & Emilia Jones To Play Tyler & Kinsey Locke In Netflix Series From Carlton Cuse & Joe Hill
The Locke siblings are set for Locke & Key, Netflix’s series adaptation of Joe Hill’s comic, from Hill, Carlton Cuse and IDW Entertainment. Connor Jessup (American Crime) and British actress Emilia Jones (Utopia) have been cast as Tyler and Kinsey Locke, respectively. They join It‘s Jackson Robert Scott, who plays their brother Bode Locke.
Netflix in July gave a 10-episode series order to Locke & Key, which had been originally developed and piloted by Hulu. Netflix did not pick up the existing Hulu pilot, written by Hill, to series but set out to redevelop the scripts, with Aron Eli Coleite and Meredith Averill joining Hill and Cuse on the show’s creative team. The changes also included re-casting two of the three Locke siblings, with only Scott, who played Bode in the Hulu pilot, staying on in the Netflix version.
Locke & Key is a horror/fantasy series that revolves around siblings Kinsey, Tyler and Bode (Jones, Connor & Jessup) who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.
The Netflix series was created by Hill and developed by Cuse, Aron Eli Coleite and Meredith Averill; the new first episode is written by Hill and Coleite; Cuse and Averill will serve as showrunners.

‘Locke & ‘Key’: ‘Scandal’ Alumna Darby Stanchfield To Star In Netflix Series
Darby Stanchfield is set to star as Nina Locke in Locke & Key, Netflix’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s comic, from Hill, Carlton Cuse and IDW Entertainment.
Locke & Key is a horror-fantasy series that revolves around siblings Kinsey, Tyler and Bode (Emilia Jones, Connor Jessup and Jackson Robert Scott) who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.
After the traumatic home attack, Nina Locke moves her family across the country to Keyhouse for a fresh start — and also to solve the mystery surrounding her late husband Rendell’s murder. She struggles with her new role as a single mom, as Rendell was always more the traditional parent type. She’s much more comfortable as an artist and house renovator.

‘Locke & Key’ To End With Season 3 On Netflix
The upcoming third season of Netflix’s Locke & Key will be its last. Fans of the supernatural thriller based on the IDW comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez should not fret though — they will get a proper conclusion since Season 3 was conceived as the show’s final chapter. In fact, I hear that, following the breakout success of Locke & Key‘s ten-episode first season, Netflix approached the series’ creative team with a plan for a three-season run consisting of a 10-episode second season and an eight-episode third season. That fit the vision of Locke & Key executive producers/co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill for how to tell the story and when to wrap it.
“Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion,” Cuse and Averill said in a statement. “As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use.”
