The Simpsons deserves not just an Emmy, but a Nobel. I am happy to say that I have seen every episode ever made at least twice, and am the richer for it.

MST3K, IMO, deserves its own thread. That show is the closest equivalent to jazz on television. "I must shoot Donald Regan to prove my love for Lisa Foster."

I'm especially fond of a few other sitcoms, including Monty Python's Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers, M*A*S*H, Titus,  Everybody Loves Raymond, Malcolm in the Middle (the first two seasons only), Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Newhart. But one sitcom which I have adopted as my advocacy is NewsRadio. The first season showed more or less a typical office sitcom, but by the second season, the humor was pure dada. The cast dynamic was unmatched (and even the post-Phil Hartman episodes were very good), the storylines unsentimental and absurdist, and the jokes from out of nowhere. Yet despite its atypicality, no other sitcom accurately captured the workplace dynamic (not quite family or friend, but not quite stranger). I understand that the episodes are coming out on DVD soon, and that's a definite buy for me.

Where do I begin?  ;D

10. Friends - Come on, this one's a given. I enjoy the show a lot less each year, but early episodes like "TOW The Blackout," "TOW The Boobies" are plain funny. And besides, they're MY AGE, and early on, it was established they were TV addicts. I think I could relate to them all-too-well...

9. The Larry Sanders Show - At a time when talk shows were trying hard to be funny, this talk show spoof actually was very funny. And it was amusing to get celebrities willing to parody THEMSELVES on the show. David Duchovny's Sharon Stone impression is hysterical.

8. Three's Company - Yes, in 90% of the episodes, the formula was "Character A hears parts of a conversation between characters B & C and misinterprets it, to madcap results." But it WORKED. And I'll always fondly remember The Ropers... but not Mr. Furley.

7. Soap - The classic soap opera parody. CTHE's announcement that this title will soon be on DVD actually excited me. Infidelity, alien abductions, invisibility issues, murder-in-the-shower, mafia princesses, talking dummies, a wisecracking black butler, a baby possessed by the devil, and Billy Crystal as Jody. What more do you need?

6. Married With Children - The ex-jock shoe salesman, his useless wife, hot but stupid daughter and wisecracking youngest son. Plus neurotic (but horny) neighbors. It was the perfect antidote to "The Cosby Show", "Family Ties", "Growing Pains" and the other "perfect families" represented on TV shortly before its debut.

5. Frasier - The spin-off that actually succeeded since instead of making it merely an extension of a hit, they actually created an entirely different show with a different brand of humor.

4. Bewitched - Sure, Samantha Stephens was never as sexy as Jeannie. But she was also never as ditzy. And she was very independent, especially as a woman of the 1960s. She was there to save the day, and unlike Jeannie, she was rarely actually to blame for the messes she was cleaning up.

3. Coupling (UK version) - To dismiss this show as a "Friends"-clone would deprive you of such mind-blowing concepts as "The Nudity Buffer", "The Giggle Loop", "Unflushables", "Porn Buddies", "Bi-vegetarianism" and "Loss of Elasticity". Trust me, once you hear what those are... you're unlikely to ever forget them! But now there's an American version. After seeing what those Yanks did with "Fawlty Towers" and "Men Behaving Badly," I'm scared... really really scared!

2. Police Squad! - In Color! Outrageous parody played with a straight face. Half the jokes from the first NAKED GUN movie came directly from this series. "Cigarette?" "Yes, it is." (Sorry, you had to be there!  :P)

1. Seinfeld - "The show about nothing." But honestly, it was truly something. Seinfeld was really the "Master of his Domain."  8)

Everybody loves Raymond - i love the humor!

Must add (and echo some already mentioned):

Batman (probably doesn't count but one of the funniest shows on TV. Ever.)
It's the Gary Shandling Show!
MASH
Newhart
Soap
The Simpsons
(I mentioned it before but must reiterate it. This series is a thing of beauty.)
Title: Re:Favorite Sitcoms?

The Simpsons will be the only show in history that would have had as guest stars both Gary Coleman and John Updike. And their upcoming UK episode will feature the voices of Tony Blair, Ian McKellen, and JK Rowling. Reportedly, Prince William desperately wanted to accept the invitation to guest-voice, but the Palace refused.

I can't believe I forgot to add Police Squad to my list. It's the funniest thing the ZAZ team ever made, and contains the best ever utilization of William Shatner on celluloid.

Soap was funniest the first season, before Benson got his own show. And Bewitched with the late Elizabeth Montgomery just a plain guilty pleasure of mine.

Was Police Squad the one with Adam West as chief of police or something?  Damn, I wish I saw a lot more of that.  I think I only saw two episodes.

Another one I didn't see much of but wish I had 'cause what I saw seemed pretty funny was Night Court.

Slightly off topic: after Conan O Brien, one of the funniest things I've seen on TV was Rob Schneider's breif run as host of Later. I don't think I can post the jokes here and make it seem funny. It's one of those things that you had to be there to get. Pretty anarchic stuff, all told.

For me:

1. M*A*S*H - the mix of comedy and drama was near perfect, the characters lovable and human, the situations hilarious and realistic at the same time.

2. The Golden Girls - from sarcastic Sophia to the dim-witted Rose, I also loved the theme song.

3. Small Wonder - though the special effects were hokey (considering the era), the values mixed with outrageous humor was a guilty pleasure.

4. Cheers - only recently have I begun to appreciate this series, and so far the era of Kirstie Alley had the good episodes.

5. The Nanny - Fran's voice was enough to make me laugh :D

6. Sex And The City - the sarcasm is oftentimes right on the mark, and the situations the girls get in are simply outrageous.

7. King Of Queens - though I hate the character of Doug (who is perhaps the most indecisive and cowardly of 'em all), the characters of Carrie and Arthur made it a balanced mix.

I've seen a lot of  (and liked) Bob Newhart's three sitcom incarnations: the first was The Bob newhart Show which used to be shown over Channel 2 in the afternoons. The second ,and my favorite, was Newhart ,on Channel 7, where he ran this country inn. One of the best episodes of that one was when he dreamed he was still in his first show. The third I don't even recall the title (was it just plain Bob?) but Newhart plays a cartoonist and the episodes I saw were hilarious, specially one in which he's visited at home by Barney. Or some purplish dinosaur thingie that's supposed to represent him. I think it was on ABC 5 but I could be wrong.

Was Police Squad the one with Adam West as chief of police or something?  d**n, I wish I saw a lot more of that.  I think I only saw two episodes.

Adam West wasn't on the show. Don't worry, though - if you saw two episodes, then you've seen 1/3 of the entire show. They had a very limited 6-episode run.

Ah, the William Shatner appearance... also Florence "Carol Brady" Henderson. Pretty much every episode's "Special Guest Star" was memorable, right, gurang? ;)

Another one I didn't see much of but wish I had 'cause what I saw seemed pretty funny was Night Court.

Now I'm the one who can't believe I missed this title! This is definitely one of my favorite sitcoms of all-time. Definitely top 5. I still have a few episodes here, but unfortunately, they're on Beta. I better transfer them already before my Betamax completely dies... it feels like it's gonna happen soon.

Yes, his third show was "Bob". I remember that was the first time I encountered Friends' Lisa Kudrow.

No one can deadpan better than Newhart! And the final scene of the last "Newhart" is classic, copied and/or parodied by so many others.

The Adam West series was called The Last Precinct, which I barely recall. Police Squad starred Leslie Nielsen and created the role of Lt. Frank Drebin. Only six episodes were ever made, and the show was a notorious flop. As the ZAZ team notes in the Naked Gun commentary, studio executives allegedly told them that the show failed because "people had to watch the show in order to get it." However, it became a cult hit, and they were able to get the Naked Gun movie made about seven years later. The entire series was once available for rent on VHS at ACA Greenhills.

[modified to add] I meant Beta. So, I doubt if it still is available. The DVD release is the only hope.

To my list, I have to add South Park. It isn't consistently great, but the brilliant episodes (such as the Mecha Streisand episode) are among the funniest things ever aired.

I guess when you're in it, you don't consider it a TV show...  ;)

Adam West wasn't on the show.

Now I've got my precints confused. Last precint was indeed the West show. But I still do recall seeing two of the six episodes of Police Squad. Now that would be easy to squeeze into a DVD,eh?  :)

Yeah. But with the high quality of Beta, chances are, your episodes will still look tiptop.

No one can deadpan better than Newhart! And the finale scene of the last "Newhart" is classic, copied and/or parodied by so many others.

The second Newhart is one sitcom I'd like to own on DVd. Or at least see regularly again.

I liked Newhart best, but the short-lived Bob, which aired on ABC 5, definitely had its moments. I remember best the episode when they had a new neighbor who'd walk around in his house in the nude with the curtains drawn.

Newhart's style of comedy (the slow double-take) is very rarely practiced anymore, and is an acquired taste. It's drawn directly from Jack Benny, and can think of no other present-day comics employing that style. (closest I can think of is Dave Foley's style in NewsRadio). Check out his comedy albums, they are also hilarious, particularly his telephone call bits. He is also (a rarity among US comics) a very devout Catholic, and I've seen him both on EWTN and The 700 Club.

Incidentally, his first show was called The Bob Newhart Show, the second, Newhart, and the third Bob. When asked why his fourth show (with Judd Hirsch) was called George and Leo, Newhart said he just ran out of ideas for a show title.

i think we pretty much all agree that The Simpsons is one of the greatest sitcoms (NOT cartoon) of all time. and personally, i think season 4 was the best one because it had conan  ;D why can't they release the DVD's faster?

the other greatest sitcom from all time is definitely Seinfeld. i love this show. master of my domain... the puffy shirt... the little jerry... the coffeetable book about coffeetables, the bro... it just spewed out so many popcultural icons. and if you don't know your seinfeld, then you're missing a lot, buddy. i know there's a seinfeld link here somewhere...

Season 3 is out August 26. Season 4 probably next year. Can't hardly wait.

HERE'S A FEW MORE:

The Cosby Show. growing up, this (along with Family Ties) was quite an influence on me. dr. heathcliff huxtable was one of the coolest dads (with the kookiest sweater sense) that ever graced the TV screen.

Punky Brewster. the epitome of cool when you're around 7 years old. i used to catch reruns in cable and still pretty much enjoyed them.

Night Court. i'm sorry, i know this isn't exactly what you call "classic", but back when cable was just some wires and FEN ruled our TV set, this was one of my must-see shows growing up. john laroquette, marcia warfield, harry anderson... these guys really cracked me up... especially that guy who played the dumb prison guard. oh well. i probably will be kicking myself for poor taste if i see an old episode at this point of my life.

My Two Dads. c'mon admit it. you followed this show years back on local TV. i think it was the quintessential late 80's sitcom -- the values it preached, the hairstyles, the decor... i can't, however, for the life of me remember the girl who played the chick with the two dads.

Perfect Strangers. let's do the dance of joy! bronson pinchot and mark lyn baker were absolutely fabulous in this show. another classic 80's hit.

Murphy Brown... but only the first few seasons when the humor was still fresh and corky and miles were NOT an item. during its later years the scripts were just plain corny.

Cheers. seeing this series again still, after all these years, manage to crack em up. the people behind it knew how to write timeless comedy. great, great show with great, great characters.

Parker Lewis Can't Lose. this show was awesome... it was a teen-driven show that wasn't your usual Saved By The Bell lame. this show was actually pretty entertaining and starred corin "corky" nemec before he went on to play psychopathic ex-soldiers in filipino productions (Goodbye America, that David Hasslehoff movie). "synchronize swatches!" ;D

god i know there's so much more. i agree though with MASH, Married With Children, South Park, The Larry Sanders Show... i think i watch more sitcoms than dramas.

Must add these chestnuts:

Mork and Mindy . . .or Once Upon A Time Robin Williams Was Actually Funny
and The Jeffersons

Also, not a sitcom but an absolute favorite: IN LIVING COLOR

(  Anybody remember That's My Mama, a black sitcom featuring  future Love Boat barkeep Ted Lange? And a Hispanic sitcom called Viva Valdez with this guy whose catchphrase was "Hellooo everybodeeee!"?  )

Oh yeah, Punky Brewster, My Two Dads & Parker Lewis Can't Loose! (http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/YaBBImages/thumbup.gif)....I've always regarded Simpsons as a cartoon instead of a Sitcom. :-[  :-[ And LifeStyle Network is airing a feature on the Cosby Show this month.

What is the title of this sitcom back in the 80's which was aired along with Punky Brewster?  The little robot girl? Wonder something....

Malcolm in the Middle is cute...not my favorite but it's....cute.

One of the funniest things I've ever read off the Web is the Small Wonder page on Jump the Shark. It made my day.  ;D Here's the link:

Parker Lewis Can't Lose was smart and sassy, and probably had more fans than one might ordinarily assume. If it hadn't aired on Fox during that network's infancy, it might have lasted a bit longer than it did.

That was the final episode of the series, in which he woke up to find himself back as the psychiatrist on his first show, which meant that the entire "Newhart" series was just a dream.  Great twist ending though. ;D

Favorite sitcoms of mine are Frasier, Will & Grace, and Friends. I miss Seinfeld--that was the best. Classic ones were The Golden Girls, Benson, Three's Company.

Night Court. i'm sorry, i know this isn't exactly what you call "classic".... i probably will be kicking myself for poor taste if i see an old episode at this point of my life.

Some episodes have actually held up pretty well, and I think I would call this very "classic", considering it had an 8 year run... not to mention John Larroquette's record-setting 4 consecutive Emmy wins for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Quote
My Two Dads... i can't, however, for the life of me remember the girl who played the chick with the two dads.

Let's see... Paul Reiser and Greg Evigan played her two dads, Giovanni Ribisi played her boyfriend, Emma Samms played her late mother in flashbacks... you're right, I can't remember who played "Nicole", but I do remember she eventually turned up as one of the kids on the Patrick Duffy-Suzanne Somers sitcom, Step By Step.

Quote
Murphy Brown... but only the first few seasons when the humor was still fresh and corky and miles were NOT an item. during its later years the scripts were just plain corny.

I enjoyed this show, but I felt it went downhill after the infamous Dan Quayle episode. I think the writers began to think too highly of themselves after that debacle over family values. But it WAS the episode that put the show on the map.

Quote
Cheers. seeing this series again still, after all these years, manage to crack em up. the people behind it knew how to write timeless comedy. great, great show with great, great characters.

Yes, this was a great show. But StarWorld really should've begun its syndication of the show with the earliest episodes, featuring Coach instead of Woody and Sam and Diane before Frasier came into the picture, so viewers could truly appreciate the Sam-Diane dynamic.

Wait a minute... this discussion... I'm getting a deja vu... are you, sungit?  ;D

Is that the one where he had another catchphrase... "Looooking Gooood!" Or am I mixing my Hispanic sitcoms up?  ::)

So do I.  :) And I'm pleasantly amazed how the site has entered into the popular lexicon. At least two series, The Simpsons and That Seventies Show recently aired episodes wherein characters literally jumped over a shark.

Re: Viva Valdez, according to the invaluable Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows (by Brooks and Marsh), it was "a noisy gang comedy about a close-knit Mexican-American family living in East Los Angeles. Louis ran a plumbing business with his eldest son, Victor. Sophia was the Mama; Ernesto, an artistic lad in training with the telephone company; Connie, the irrepresible teenager; and Pepe, the 12 year old baseball fanatic."

also forgot to mention SOAP -- i loved catching the SOAP marathons way back when we still had illegal feeds of comedy central. sigh. those were the days.

MST3K, IMO, deserves its own thread. That show is the closest equivalent to jazz on television. "I must shoot Donald Regan to prove my love for Lisa Foster."

Hehehe :). I see you've met Ator and his pecs like melons, gurang :). MST3K is definitely one of the more original series out there. God bless Comedy Central. Any other fans of the show?

My current favorite is Everybody Loves Raymond. The formula stands out like a sore thumb, but I just love the cast.

Anyone remember Sledge Hammer! It's been a long time since I watched it, but I remember it had a kind of Police Squad humor to it.

Action is a biting short-lived satire on Hollywood starring Jay Mohr. They'd show it sometimes on HBO.

Other sitcoms that come to mind:

Head of the Class
Webster
The Famous Teddy Z

Oh yes, Ator's pecs.  ;D Thanks a mil, Multiple Angles!

Sledgehammer was a family guilty pleasure, except for my mother. We started watching it because it was the show that used to come before Mcgyver, and I eventually came to prefer it to Mcgyver. My dad and sister also loved the show, and the three of us would just laugh ourselves silly, to the consternation of my mom, who just didn't get it.

I also remember liking Teddy Z, short-lived though it was. Alex Rocco was great, and I think he won an Emmy for that show. I best remember him though as the voice of Roger Myers in The Simpsons

Is that the one where he had another catchphrase... "Looooking Gooood!" Or am I mixing my Hispanic sitcoms up?  ::)

You're actually mixing your ethnic groups up,Mr.Hankey!  ;D   "Loooking good!" was the catchphrase of that other show I mentioned, That's My Mama. Ted Lange, who plays this character called Junior, said that. Pity he went on to become boring old Isaac the bartender from Love Boat. (I actually forgot about that catchphrase. Thanks for reminding me. ;D )

Did MST3K ever feature Eegah! with Richard "Jaws" Kiel, gurang? I absolutely love that stupid little movie. If not for Trog, it'd be the Citizen Kane of caveman movies.  ;D

The one thing I didn't like about MST3K was that they featured the great Mario Bava's Danger: Diabolik. That was/is a terrific movie, I thought. Even the score (by Ennio Morricone)  was fantastic. Have it on VHS and I will defend that movie to my dying breath.  ;D

Really.

Eegah was rendered by the MST3K group.Haven't seen it in either version (nor Diabolik), but I plan to see it one of these days.

Re: MST3K and "good movies" - my initial perception of MST3K was that it was a perfect way to get back at bad movies. My perception has somewhat changed. MST3K still works best when they are making fun of those bad movies. However, some of the humor of the show is derived as well by focusing on a single element visible onscreen, and developing a comic riff on it. What distinguishes MST3K from any jerks of the street wisecracking over a movie is that their wisecracks emanate from a wide variety of sources, both literate and lowbrow. MST3K is as rich in allusion as The Simpsons, though sometimes their references are more obscure.

And since a lot of these jokes are taken from individual elements, such elements from which the jokes are derived can appear in good movies as well as bad. Take for example the line I quoted earlier, "I must shoot Donald Regan to prove my love for Lisa Foster." That line resulted from the appearance on the credit sequence of the name "Lisa Foster". One gets the joke only if he/she remembers that John Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan to prove his love for Jodie Foster. (and icing on the cake if one also remembers who Donald Regan was) Since the name "Lisa Foster" can appear as well in the credit sequence of a good movie, the comic value of the line would be the same whether or not the movie is bad or good.

The MST3K movie (which was my first encounter with the group) featured This Island Earth, which is actually acknowledged as one of the better, if not one of the best sci-fi flicks of the 50s, even as acknowledged by the group. However, there were enough elements in that old movie that were sufficient for MST3K to do their thing, and do a funny film as a result.

MST3K is not for all tastes. But for those that do, it is a rich meal. Incidentally, it was, along with Futurama, Al Gore's favorite TV show. Al Gore's favorite movie was Being John Malkovich. God I wish he were US president instead of Dubya.

Seldge Hammer was funny, from what i remember... a cross between dragnet and police files and hunter (because seldge had a huge ass gun). how long did this show run?

The Amazing Teddy Z's the one with jon cryer right?

on the local front, i remember loving Sic O'Clock News, the one-two punch of [/b]TODAS[/b] and Iskul Bukol and Ang Manok ni San Pedro. and, much as i ahte to amit this, i was also an avid follower of Palibhasa Lalaki. ;D

Ah yes, whatever happened to Frieda, Jane and Peter's long lost sister. Me and my friends used to speculate about that. Even had an idea on doing a short film documentary entitled "In Search of Frieda Fonda". The kicker was the possibility that she ended up as some itinerant bus preacher, and if we ever did that movie and found her, we'd have to end it with Frieda giving a five minute talk about the joys of having found god and religion in her life.  ;D

But seriously, whatever happened to her? Even Google is silent.

Slightly OT, but I also found Spanky Rigor(?) to be exceedingly funny. There's this film guested in by the TODAS gang wherein Spanky played an unctious Spelling Bee host. His diction and rhythm were so on-key it was the most hilarious thing in that movie. Does anybody remember what movie that was?

This is not in anyway a favorite of mine, but I had no idea where else to put this announcement, and I didn't think it deserved its own thread:

For fans of Mad About You, The Hallmark Channel starts running the show in syndication in the Philippines this July, Mondays-Thursdays, 8:30PM, with a midnight rerun.

Hear Paul Reiser whine and Helen Hunt play "the straight guy" from the very beginning starting on July 1st!  ;D

Anything new on Coupling - USA?

Coupling (USA) is scheduled to debut in a very prime spot on NBC's Must-See TV Thursday line-up this fall, Thursdays at 9:30PM, sandwiched between Will & Grace and ER. It's the same slot that F*R*I*E*N*D*S had in its first season, which was used to build up a fan base so it could move to the all-important 8:00PM lead slot on the network's Thursday line up.

Here's the final cast:

Left to right, that'll be Jane, Steve, Susan, Patrick, Sally and Jeff.

I prefer the UK cast, but I'm biased  ;) :

Jane is Asian in the US cast? And Jeff looks older than the British Jeff.  And is Susan - USA the one who played the wife in HBO's Mind of the Married Man?

Jane is Asian in the US cast?

Yup, she's half Korean.

And Jeff looks older than the British Jeff.

He's a last-minute replacement for Road Trip's Breckin Meyer.

Sally was in Mind of the Married Man. Susan's from Melrose Place and Oh, Grow Up!

Anything new on Coupling - USA?

Having seen all the episodes that have aired so far (all of which are based directly on UK season one episodes), the biggest problem with this show is that in the adaptation (UK runs 29 minutes per episode, US runs 20-22 minutes per episode), the missing 7-9 minutes per episode actually contains most of the funny punchlines and catchphrases.

I hope they fix the problem soon... and have some original storylines so they can be judged without the shadow of the UK counterpart clouding people's judgments.

I'm really enjoying Just Shoot Me. I dunno if the writing's improving, or I'm just starting to get into the groove of things. It's the only time I actually find David Spade hilarious.

I never let a mystery go unsolved, even if it takes me over a year:

Frieda married a foreigner. She went back to school, got her degree, and now has a very successful dental practice in New Jersey.

She last visited the Philippines about two years ago. But her "Body Language" figure was allegedly a lot more full.
