Title: Tonearm's wand tweak...
Post by: nizmo on May 13, 2011 at 09:45 PM
I've read this twaek at AudioKarma's forum and I tried... ;D
the purpose is to reduce resonance and vibrations from the tonearm.

wrapped the wand with plumber's teflon...it will cost almost nothing and will not ruin
anything in your turntable. Others use shrinkable tubes but i find teflon lighter than that.

I got a favorable result... try it to find out  ;D ;D ;D
if there's none in your ears then you can easily remove it.

Both materials can be sourced easily here, but I would prefer teflon ...  :)

have you done the tweak brader AJ?

Tonight Fr. Jim, already got 2 teflon rolls and need to listen first without the bandage and compare after. Came late last night and was so tired to perform the operation... :D

Father Jim nice simple tweak ;) I'll try this also if I'll have the time. Did you guys just roll it up w/ the tonearm installed or took it out? Pasensya na guys I'm not very good when it comes to dismantling tone arms & cartridges, only have the ears for listening w/ my TT ;D

Tried it last night on my SME arm. It was quite late so the bandage is not smooth. Rolled it up with arm in place and I realized that it's really difficult to handle such delicate part of TT.

The result is very positive, as Fr. Jim already mentioned the difference is very audible and even ticks were reduced.   :o

I'll do next my technics tonight ...  :)

Just check out cause if ticks were reduced, then transparency may have been reduced.  IMO, if the rumble is reduced, transparency will increase and all inherent noises such as tick and pops due to the vinyl dirt will be more apparent.  Sometimes too much damping of the tonearm can also do harm.  You can experiment on how much teflon is wrapped around the arm

Thanks for the heads up sir!  :)

eventhough I recalibrated the TF after wrapping?

maybe if I got time to restart the process and test every complete wrap cycle from end to end of the arm...  :-\

no need to dismantle tonearm and cart....just put the stylus guard on while wpapping
just to protect it. goodluck bro  ;D

congrats brader AJ...i'm enjoying so much the tweak  ;D ;D ;D
Joey is right should not be too thick... it should as thick like your shrinkable tubes.

it reduced..  but will try on my other arm to compare and will try to set a certain gauge the amount of damping so not to compromize the natural AQ.

Got a chance to mummified my technics arm and got same result as my SME arm. Based on my gage, teflon wrap adds about 2g to the arm, so needs to be recalibrated again to correct VTF setting.

(sorry for crappy pix & this time fitted with pioneer cartridge)
