Does this mean I have to count 4+ years waiting for the DVD compilation to come out? :( :(   Unless of course Studio 23 or Solar picks up the series and airs it locally. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for Enterprise (o meron na nito ignorante lang ako)

BG's a SciFi Channel mini-series. Expect it to be shown on one of the Star Channels.

Enterprise is screened every Friday at 8pm on RPN-9. Haven't seen it myself but that's what the trekkies (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/via-astris/) are saying.

The Sci Fi Channel's new miniseries, "Battlestar Galactica", premieres Monday, December 8th, 9/8c. A complete reimagining of the late '70s television show, "Battlestar Galactica" stars Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama, the leader of a rag-tag fleet of ships carrying all that remains of humanity. Everyone else was wiped out by the Cylons, a lifeform that turned on its creator. Now, the survivors "jump into uncharted space...limited supplies...no allies" at war with an unbeatable (and sometimes alluring) foe.

Credited cast:
Edward James Olmos ....  Commander William Adama
Mary McDonnell ....  Laura Roslin
James Callis ....  Dr. Gaius Baltar
Tricia Helfer ....  Number 6
Jamie Bamber ....  Captain Lee 'Apollo' Adama
Katee Sackhoff ....  Lieutenant Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace
Grace Park ....  Lieutenant Sharon 'Boomer' Valerii
Aaron Douglas ....  Chief Petty Officer Tyrol
Paul Campbell ....  Billy Keikeya
Kandyse McClure ....  Dualla
Connor Widdows ....  Boxey
Matthew Bennett ....  Aaron Doral
Michael Eklund ....  Deckhand Prosna
Alessandro Juliani ....  Lt. Gaeta

I just finished watching Part One. Bitin!  ;D

The casting is quite surprising. How can someone as Hispanic as Adama have a son as... Irish(?)-looking as Apollo? And okay, I knew Starbuck was a woman in this version... but I wasn't prepared to see Boomer go from a large African American male to a sexy Asian female!  ;D

Seriously, though... people creating remakes should look at this as the gold standard. The basic premise is the same, but the execution is so different, it's as if you're watching a totally different storyline unfold.

On to Part Two...

Thanks for posting that pic... that's really funny!  ;D

She's a lot cuter in the mini, though.

This was a GREAT update on a classic. It had very light touches to remind you of the original, like how Starbuck still smokes cigars, or how the original theme was used without integrating it into the new music. Nice and subtle. It had a standard "twist" ending, which either begs for a sequel... or maybe even a new weekly series.

Hopefully Sci-Fi can find sponsors for this project. Sayang naman if the set up leads to nothing more.

well, last I heard the ratings were really, really good. In fact I think the show posted the highest ratings the sci fi channel ever had, so i won't be surprised if they make a regular series out of it.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA GREENLIT FOR SERIES

Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff & Tricia Helfer Reprising Roles in New SCI FI Channel Original Series

SCI FI Channel has greenlit production on the Battlestar Galactica franchise as a new original weekly series. Based on the top-rated December miniseries event of the same name, the one-hour drama is slated to begin production on 13 episodes in Vancouver next month.

All principal cast from the mini will reprise their roles for the series, including Edward James Olmos (Commander Adama), Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslin), Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) and Tricia Helfer (Number Six), among others.

Ronald D. Moore (Carnivále, Mission: Impossible 2) returns as executive producer as well as writer. The project will be produced exclusively for SCI FI, in association with Sky One. The series will be distributed by USACE, where David Eick, an executive producer of the miniseries, serves as Executive Vice President.

An edgy reimagining of the 1978 television series, the SCI FI miniseries became the highest-rated cable mini in 2003 — delivering more viewers and higher ratings than HBO's Angels in America. The Battlestar Galactica series is an intriguing take on the classic adventure of a ragtag fleet of humans, the sole survivors of a devastating nuclear attack by the robot Cylons. Faced with an unwinnable battle against a deadly enemy, they are forced to flee under the protection of their one remaining warship, the outdated Battlestar Galactica. Pursued by the Cylons — some of whom have now taken human form — Commander Adama (Olmos) and President Roslin (McDonnell) lead these last remnants of humanity in search of a new home ... a planet called Earth.

SCI FI Channel is a television network where "what if" is what's on. SCI FI fuels the imagination of viewers with original series and events, blockbuster movies and classic science fiction and fantasy programming, as well as a dynamic Web site and magazine. Launched in 1992, and currently in 83 million homes, SCI FI Channel is a program service of Universal Television Networks, part of the Universal Television Group, a division of Vivendi Universal Entertainment (VUE), the U.S.-based film, television and recreation entity of Vivendi Universal, a global media and communications company.

Well, they better realize that continuing the old show is never gonna happen, and even Hatch himself has joined The New BG bandwagon:

From SciFi.Com (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2004-04/02/16.00.sfc):

Hatch To Appear on Galactica

Richard Hatch, who played Capt. Apollo on the original Battlestar Galactica series, confirmed to SCI FI Wire that he is in final negotiations to make a guest appearance as a different character in at least one episode of SCI FI Channel's upcoming Battlestar Galactica series. The news may surprise some fans, as Hatch had publicly taken SCI FI and the new show's producers to task for re-imagining the concept rather than continuing the old show.

"There are very talented, gifted people involved in this version of Battlestar," Hatch said in an interview. "I guess for five years I'd carried on a campaign to bring back the show, because I thought it had legs. I thought it had a huge fan support and following all over the world, having traveled the world with the Battlestar novels and comic books. Basically, I've been involved in ways to bring the show back and, not only that, but to bring it back in a shape and a form and a way that fans would love and support and yet would also bring it into the future."

The actor added, "I do not see a competition between old show and new show. To me, the original show is a classic and it always will be. The new show is the decision that the network decided to make, and I've always told everybody I'd never do a cameo on any show. A cameo tells me that somebody just wants to use your name, but they're not interested in you as an actor. I've said, on any show, if they offered me a challenging, wonderful role to play, why would I not as an artist, as an actor, love to play it?"

Hatch went on to explain that he subsequently spoke with Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore at a Battlestar Galactica 25th anniversary event. "I thought he was a very intelligent, very creative, very talented man, really down to earth," Hatch said of Moore. "I enjoyed my conversations with him. We discussed that if SCI FI did pick up the series he might be interested in talking to me about coming on and guest starring on the show. I said, 'Ron, if it was something that would really challenge me as an actor it would be a win-win circumstance, meaning something I'd love doing and would add value to the show, that I would be open to discussing.'"

The miniseries aired last December and was a major ratings success, and Moore then reached out to Hatch. According to Hatch, Moore has cast him in a "Nelson Mandela kind of role," a man who "challenges the powers that be." Hatch expects to shoot the episode, likely the third show of the season, beginning in May. Asked if he would appear on a recurring basis, Hatch responded, "I think the way they set it up is that it's a guest star role that could have a life depending on circumstances. There's been no determination made on that." Battlestar Galactica will debut in early 2005 on SCI FI.

I saw the Season One (R2) of the new version for sale at HMV when I was in Hong Kong earlier this month, but it was way too expensive for something I've already watched.

Season One will be released on R1 widely on September 20th. But if you have someone in the States who can buy it from Best Buy for you, Best Buy has it as an "exclusive" beginning July 26th.

BRILLIANT series. I consider Season One to be the best sci-fi show I've ever seen.

So, did anyone watch the miniseries last weekend?

Anyway, Cinemax Asia (http://www.cinemaxasia.com/battlestar/index.jsp) is airing two episodes of Season One a week, every Sunday at 10PM starting July 9th. Strangely, the episodes seem reedited into a single long episode ("Mission 1," "Mission 2", etc.). I wonder if the merged episodes will be any different from the stand-alone versions.

Worth a look...

BSG is supposed to be for kids, that is why we had a lot of fun with the old BSG and even the first Star Wars flick. BSG was always separated from adult television fare.

Now, they are turning everything to West Wing/NYPD Blue clones. And children lose in the process.  :-[

Title: Re: Battlestar Galactica
Post by: ralfy on Apr 12, 2006 at 03:35 AM
The new series for me resembles the last three Star Wars films: slick, pretentious, and ultimately dreary. Also, a I pointed out in a previous message, it looks like West Wing Meets NYPD Blue in space: it does not have the sense of grandeur and wonder that was found in the original series. It makes me sad that those who grew up watching the original BSG will have kids who will likely not enjoy the new one, and that those who never saw the original or could actually imagine what a new series based on the old one could have looked like know what they're missing.

I know it's impossible, especially in a world where reality TV and money speak, but I'm hoping that they remake the original BSG, and this time with scriptwriters who had the same visions as Glen Larson and Gene Roddenberry. (In the original series, they were even going to bring in Isaac Asimov as head writer, if only the TV execs weren't so shortsighted.) I think Richard Hatch was on the right track when he brought the case to BSG fans and showed his trailer: back to the basics, with an old, distinguished actor to take a leading role (no drive to get young, sexy actors to capture a teenage audience!), with Benedict and Hatch to take on more mature roles, and storylines to capture the epic tale that began with the original: in short, a television program that will actually appeal to grade school kids and the original BSG fans and that will introduce "old school" television programming to teens and young adults.

The original was a wonderful adventure and could have done well had they had pulled the plug. Not only older fans but even some of the former actors (even Richard Hatch, before he started working for the new series) wanted to retain the spirit of the original but that did not happen.

When I was a kid, I had the Muppet Show and even Buck Rogers (in the same way dad couldn't wait to watch The Lone Ranger and Superman), but I always waited for BSG in the same way I waited for each Star Wars installment (and that was a three-year wait per film!). Now, I hardly think young kids will look forward to this.

I suppose my only consolation is that I was lucky enough to experience that magic (young kids didn't say things "rocked" then expect for "My Sharona"). The problem is that kids won't, for what we used to watch as kids is now being marketed to older groups.

Is anybody else watching the current season? If what really happened was for good, that was ballsy for the show; however, I was disappointed how it was set up.

I just finished season 3 on Cinemax. What are you referring to? Is this about the season ender?

Yup, the third season. I think I was referring to the penultimate episode then. The finale made up for it. Congrats to the show for finally having been nommed for a major Emmy (both writing & directing).

Halfway through my Season 2.5 DVDs but stopped before the infamous one-two punch of Black Market and Scar, the two allegedly worst episodes of this season and the point where a lot of people thought the show was jumping the shark. Will watch those when I have time I can really waste and probably skip on to the rest of the season. Will dip into my Firefly box set first in the meantime.

Anybody of the torrent people here caught the premiere of the final 10 episodes of this show?  Just want to read some feedback here.  Not exactly spoilers.  Haven't seen it myself.  Did it suck or did it rock? ???

Wow, nobody's talking about the latest episodes of BSG?!? I've only watched up to episode 14 of season 4 and that FRAKKIN' rocked!

Best show on TV IMO, right-up there with LOST. Too bad we only have 19 days 'till the end of BSG.

Hohoho... I'm sure the BSG finale pissed off a lot of people, but seriously, I thought it was brilliant. Blame it on my Catholic schoolboy upbringing.

What a frakkin' masterpiece.

I never thought that a show I just happened to check-out one day 'cause I saw an awards show it was nominated in a few months ago would turn-out to be the best 4 year movie I'd ever witnessed. And now, everything else just seems so second-rate compared to this overwhelmingly unnoticed (by the general viewers) yet greatly appreciated (by just about everyone who's seen it) study of the human condition -- warts and all -- entitled Battlestar Galactica.

Thanks for the wonderful ride, Galactica.

Maybe one day, we'll get to experience this again. After all, "All this has happened before, and all this will happen again."

The best estimate on R1 for a Season 4.5 release and also a "The Complete Series" release is July 28th.

I wish, but it seems doubtful. Wala pa nga yung 4.0. I've bought Seasons 1-3 on R1, but the price difference is huge, so I'm willing to wait.

Just finished Season 3, and just starting Season 4.

Is it just me, or did Lee Adama become more insufferable as the season(s) progressed?  ;D

Finally finished Battlestar Galactica 4.5.

My thoughts below after the SPOILER WARNING!

SPOILERS

Was only supposed to watch The Last Frakking Special but finished with a mad dash through episodes 13 to 20.

The Dualla suicide (Episode 11) I didn't see it coming only because it didn't have the usual foreshadowing shorthand - - - like those quick cuts to Gaeta's disgruntled face before he embarks on his violent revolution with Zarek - - -but she was in many ways a summing up of the emotional tenor of the fleet: juggling an illusion of normalcy while standing on the precipice of a suicide ledge. The trauma of Earth, the last outpost of relief,  turning out to be a wasteland  - - and all the traumas piling up on them for the last three seasons - - -pushed everyone to some kind of brink. For Dualla, it was a bullet to the brain after the happiest night of her life  . . ."your smile has returned" Gaeta tells her just seconds before.  It's quite chilling, that.

I also quite like the arc of both Zarek and Gaeta. Much as I understand how his ambitions have corrupted Zarek's idealism and the brunt of Gaeta's traumas(his persecution, his maiming),these two have  always had a streak of snaky in them  and the arc their characters took made perfect sense - - -specially given the last thing Gaeta says to Baltar before they shoot him. (Don't have a clue - - or don't remember - - what secret they share, though. Help?:?: ) When Zarek and Gaeta smile at each other before their execution, there was something conspirational and shadowy yet oddly benign in that exchange.

I like that sole tube of toothpaste. Humanity's remains reduced to fighting over one tube of toothpaste.

As for the three-part finale . . .still processing.

A bit iffy with the Dylan song use, still.

I felt iffy about the Starbuck ending, too, but am warming to it.

The pathos of Tyrol was touching. A bit more so than Adama and Roslin's final scene. And Adama's last line of dialogue  . . yeah.

Saul Tigh turned out to be the character I liked the most from all four seasons.

More later.

specially given the last thing Gaeta says to Baltar before xxx (Don't have a clue - - or don't remember - - what secret they share, though. Help?:?: )

He was Baltar's "chief of staff" on New Caprica.

I know that  . . but didn't everybody know that already, thus not making it as much of secret anymore? That's why Starbuck forced him into an airlock with intent to kill, if memory serves.

I'm thinking there's something that happened during the webisodes. Those are the only things I haven't seen of BSG.

I agree with you. The finale was definitely brilliant. I may not be that religious but I believe in Angels.

When I get to watch the episodes again in a boxed set, I hope I get a more solid idea what happened to the cylon skin jobs (since they cannot procreate by themselves, maybe they interbred with the humans?)

SO bibiyakin na naman yung season 4 into two installments - 4.0 and 4.5, just like season 2?

Caprica 6 and the other Baltar were angels but do you think Thrace was an angel or a ghost?

Thats the beauty of this series. Each fan can have his own interpretation of all the things that happened in the show. Others may not agree with ones interpretation but, what the heck, its just a show and I enjoyed it to the very end.

Now with the question, is Kara an angel or ghost? For me, I would like to think that she was neither. She was part of the plan of a higher Divine Being that somehow controls the destiny of everyone, cylon and human alike. Did she die in the crash? Was her DNA and memories extracted and transfered to another identical body in an identical ship capable of receiving beacon signals that other vipers cannot? We would never know but it could be the story arc of another mini series or BSG 2-hr special in the future. (or another set of webisodes)

Until then, I look forward to the release of the final boxed sets of BSG here in the Philippines.

Have you seen it already? I don't want to post spoilers. It's set 58 years before The Fall and tells the story of how the entire mess started.

It was first released as a straight-to-dvd last year to get buzz from people. Anyway, I thought it was a good setup. Not a fan of the opening scene, though. Too small scale for such an epic premise. But overall it was alright.

Koolkat, you can read some of the reviews from BSG fans here:Caprica (http://www.amazon.com/Caprica-Eric-Stoltz/dp/B001RTCP1U/ref=sr_tr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1264562767&sr=1-1) It seems many love it.

Tho I own the complete BSG series, I haven't watched Caprica yet as I'm waiting for the complete first season. :)

Just finished the remake last year.   I'm not sure how I feel about this though. Maybe worth a look.  I wish they started with the First Cylon war first or maybe continued the Blood and Chrome series.
