@hans - someone in this forum suggested that as much as possible (or if budget permits), your source component should be brand new; or if previously-owned stuff, at least procured from someone reliable. or better yet, bring along someone knowledgeable enough and ask the seller if you can open the cd player and take a peek (to check for replaced parts?).

Try HMR in Pasig. They have single and 5 disc carousel CD players there. I bought a 6 disc Toshiba carousel for my audio set up. It is HDCD compatible too. Matches well with my Marantz digital stereo amplifier. ;D

Guys, I saw a denon DCD 1600 surplus. Anybody familiar with the model, like DAC, etc. Can it play CDR CDRW P cd's. Have not tested it , its about P 3 k.

I tried some of my cds but it did not read any of them, there may be a lens problem. I took the yamaha natural sound CDX 620 rs instead with 18 bit dac 8 bit oversampling , optical and digital out., all metal case. I cannot find the model in the internet though, the nearest is CDX 596. Its ok naman so far.

kaffee1, i dunno what those numbers mean, it could just be a marketing blurb to make it seem more advanced than other 8x oversampling cd players... i've tried a 1-bit MASH panasonic cd player and a 20-bit 8x denon cd player... both were entry level, but i think i liked the sound & features of the panasonic a little bit better, but the problem with it is mapili, can't read cdr's.

got another surplus CD player today, I now have Sony 333ESD CD Player. I chose this against Denon DCD-1300. I also saw a Kenwood 1100D CD player, thinking of partnering this with the surplus Kenwood KA-1100SD amp. Anybody has an idea about the player?

don't think so. kasi ang logic nila is that brand new China-made VCD players that also play CDs are priced as low as P1.5K. so, consumers would be attracted to those equipment than go into surplus CD players. yes, an artificial demand surge could happen, but then, it would settle to the correct level sooner or later. kasi hindi naman ganun karami ang audio enthusiasts natin.

That's a nice CD player you got. Notice the original price at Y89,800 which is about $800. No wonder the local audiophile shops didn't sell it here in the '80s. I tested it a week ago and it played all CDs fed, even 3.5-inch CD-Rs. Sound is decent too and would be better as you match it with the right equipment. Maraming darating na CD players kasi binagsak ng Hapon ang presyo nila for such equipment. Here in Davao it used to be sold by the Japs to retailers at P1K per unit. Yesterday, I saw a revised list and the price was down to P600. For surplus shoppers out there, baka ibagsak din sa Pier ang presyo (unless they first dispose of old stocks) when the new batch arrives. The adjusted retail price should be from P1.5 to P2K.

does your technic play cdrs? i have an sl-p999 but somehow i becomes picky with cdrs, generally i will only read its content (how many tracks recorded) but once you push the play button, it would bulged.... naka indicate trying to play the track but the track time meter wont show. No problem with pirateds though. d ko 2loy mapakingan jhenna ko...... hehehe.
btw how do you find the sonic qualitites of the technics sir, vis-a-vis the onkyo and the sony?

sir okey naman yung nakuha ko na Onkyo C-200. Pine-play lahat ng CDs na isalang ko. I was able to use a universal remote bought from Raon though basic functions lang plus yung eject function.

got from the pier yesterday a technics sl-p770 for 1.9k...its a 4dac 18bit unit...it says class AA in front whatever that means...it came out in 1988 and had a MSRP of $680 back then...kasing bigat ng rotel rcd-965 ko and plays cdrs well except those with dark colored playing side...
have not really done an extended listening of the unit...will do so and post comments compared with the rotel

congratulations. good model, better price. i suggest that surplus CDPs be tested before a deal is closed with your own software, including 5-inch CDRs and 3-inch CDRs para walang lugi and assure you'll get reasonable re-sale value later.

have listened to my recently acquired surplus technics sl-p770 and and comparing it with my rotel rcd-965bx,
here are my impressions:
the technics played louder and resolves more details but the rotel is more musical and less fatiguing for longer
listening sessions.

another tip: replace those real skinny power cords that come with surplus cd players with fat and sturdy ones from HMR... they come in different lengths...had one of those soldered to my technics surplus player para at least better looking and hopefully better sounding...you can get ones with round plugs para derecho na to the daewoo stepdown transformer without having to use plug adapters pa :D

for your surplus cdp, kelangan lang putulin at solder sa loob ng player and voila meron ka ng heavy duty na cord :D
sir obet, nakakuha ka rin ng powercords na sing taba ng "vienna sausage". Ahehehehehe. Actually, these powercords sold by HMR are the ones used for servers and server appliance, kaya pulido rin yung construction and materials nung powercord.

i remember auditioning a sansui alpha series as well a couple of weeks ago, as i remember distinctly the alpha sign in the left most corner of the player. manipis yong sound, as compared to the denon and the sony i suppose the sansui be my last choice. i dont know but this is just me.
ganda yan pang-koleksyon if it's still working, i.e., could play all types of CDs. otherwise, like a typical 20-yr. old kid, sakit ng ulo.

I've snubbed high-end but old CDP models here in Davao these past few years, but with the experiences you're sharing, I'm going back hunting for those machines. Who knows, they may have new optical lenses since I remember back in '85 when I first got my first Sony CDP, the manual said the optical lens was good only from 5 to 10 years on normal use. That was first-generation CDP lens, of course. I've actually seen mid-80s top of the line CDPs here made by Sony, Technics and Yamaha. Kung may katulong akong mag-aararo dito, I might find them buried somewhere.
Also among the Jap commercial brands, Sony is really the best with respect to CDPs (didn't they develop the CD?). Just like Sansui and Luxman for amps, Nakamichi for cassette tape players, and Micro Seiki and Denon for records decks (Technics was more of a generalist, although famous for its DD turntables, until DJs who can hardly be described as audiophiles decided the SL1200 is best for scratching, not playing, vinyls).

Sir Akyat, wala akong nakita sa mga naka-post na yan, ang nakita ko yung Sony 701ES, Yamaha 1a or 2a yata, Nakamichi OM-70(?) at Technics na nakatagilid ang tray, parang nakatayo ang unit. Basta alam ko mid -80s itong mga 'to at mahal ang presyo. Hindi ko alam kung natabunan na sa mga bodega rito o may nakabili na. Btw, may "nakahoy" ako dito kahapon, Nakamichi 482Z (original price in 1982 - $975), good working condition with minor scratches, P1K lang. Kaya ito, puro cassette tape ang pinatutugtug ko ngayon.
i own an Onkyo C501XD and C901XD bought at P1K each last year. there's a C701XD here, which i could buy also at P1K but i'm thinking it would be for RU9 since he asked me to bring him one when i visit Zamboanga next month.
these models are okay, but need from 5 to 10 minutes warming up to perform properly. hindi mapili sa CDs (could read CD-Rs, even mini CDs), mabilis magbasa, but could mistrack the first song pag malamig. my 501XD's tray also fails sometimes but there's a technique there. just push the tray, and when you hear the click, it would pop out. it only happens at about 2 out of 10 tries anyway. maganda yung 501XD parang brand new, the 901XD has some scratches pero A-okay din. parehong complete ang jacks - two sets for analog and two for digital. actually sa Selworld yan noon, mura lang ang auction price nila, lower than the mid-level Sony ES series. pero maganda tingnan. these came out in the US as DX series in late to '80s to early '90s at prices ranging from $500 for 501XD to $800 for 901XD.
sorry Jojo, nasa Davao ako. kaya ako nakakamura dito kasi sa warehouse ako diretso. ang bentahan nila sa warehouse "as is", hanggang power lang ang testing. pero since, may kausap ako sa loob na technicians, pag may gusto akong bilhin, pinatatago ko sa kanila tapos testing nila sa gabi. kinabukasan, kukunin ko kung okay sa "as-is" price of P800 to P900 for CDP (sa price list nila P350 to P600 lang pero hindi ganun pag nakita nilang maganda ang hawak mo). binibigyan ko ang technician ng P100 to P200 per unit depende kung maganda ang nakuha ko. yung isang contact ko, na-buking na kaya nilipat, pero may kapalit naman. sa retailers ng surplus dito, presyong Maynila din, ang CDP from P1.5K to P3.5K. pero konting abilidad, ang laki ng savings, plus free servicing pa dun sa technician na nag-test ng unit.

Nilista na yung mga oks na cd player, nandyan din yung panasonic pagkatanda ko, i-babelfish nyo, then read the reviews. :) Mukhang pinaka oks na cdp ng sony besides 701es is that 553 or 557 model, medyo mas modelo. Ok yung source nyo na taga pier, nakakapag recommend ng cdp, oks daw Panasonic 1-bit mash? Ano description nya for the player? Musical, neutral and warm? Audyopayls din pala yung mga taga pier :P

Dami pala maganda... hirap yan dadami CDP sa bahay meron na ako 2 brands.
among the CDP's in nelson's list, i was lucky enough to be able to use the panasonic & technics... the panasonic 1-bit MASH cdp was my first ever cdp which i used in the 90's, and the technics 18-bit 4DAC was borrowed from a friend.
these 2 CDP are opposites -- the panasonic excels in midrange body & musicality while the technics excels in detail & dynamics... being extremes might make them sensitive to speaker & amp matching, i think the panasonic will match with a lively/detailed setup while the technics might go well with a lush tube amp setup.
i'm currently using the technics with a EL34 tube amp and i can confirm narayan's observation that it does have a strong output signal, so much so that i prefer the sound without a preamp... even though i'm using only the passive attenuator in my amp, the sound is very detailed & dynamic... with a preamp in the signal chain the dynamic contrast can get a little tiresome, but without the preamp its just right so you kinda save money coz you don't need a preamp... the impression when listening to guitars and drums is that the musician was giving his all into the strumming and the hitting... very good CDP if you want to hear all the details.
for testing hook it up 24hours on repeat mode if it withstand the test good buy yan hehehe.. ;) ;D ;D btw no need to turn on your AVR.

meron ko nakita Sony 333esd cdp sa pier kanina ok naman except sa cdr namimili. pero mukhang madumi lang lens, kasi nilinis ng konti ok na sa ibang cdr na previously ayaw basahin. dun sa first bldg. 2k na lang daw, pero i'm sure may bawas pa yun. yung eject din mabagal pero papalitan lang daw ng belt. match yan sa 333es na amp. ;D ;D

I'm sure madami silang tip... pero ako isa lang tip ko sa iyo... antayin mo yun mga nag-post na magbenta ng surplus cdp nila, kasi yan mga yan eh ubod ng busisi, napaka pihikan, pati ilalim nun player tinitignan, kaya piling pili na nila yun mga stock sa pier bago nila bilhin.
ngayon kng ibebenta nila eh di hindi ka na mahihirapan mamili at hindi ka na nerbyosin na bka maloko ka.
Ganyan kasi ginawa ko eh, pero ako lang yun. ;D ;D ;D ;D
1) bring cdr with lots of scratches. ( better yun cd nila kasi dami na scratch yun)
2) haggle P2,200 start bargain for 1,800 hehehehe..
3) push all button if still works
4) keep on ejecting to test how easy it reads the cd
5) when playing try to press advance to diff tracks kung meron number direct mo na..
6) check the body, facade, display and kung pwede pa open mo..
7) if it skip try mo ulit.. now if it still skip then look for another player
8) REMEMBER any time pwede breakdown yun unit so be prepared.

sorry for that comment, biro lang yun sir. Korek pa rin si JojoD. sa totoo lang maraming nagpapalit kahit maganda ang pakakawalan, kasi yung iba every month namimili. kapag umabot na ng 6 ang CDP units at 3 or 4 naka-shelve na lang, no other option but to let go of 1 or 2.

Had a chance to own Onkyo Integra 701xd for 1 week before a friend bought it from me.. ;D ;D hehehe you'll right this CDP can read cdr fast even on random wla problem...IMHO Onkyo has very good mids ( vocals ) the singer have a fuller voice and a sense of air in the high though its not detail as other brand but still Onkyo provide a wide soundstage :) :) and good match for bright amp coz this cdp is on the warm side. ;) ;)
well anyway, and to answer sir original question of sir reefshark0: the pier we are talking about here is loc near the BIR pier building, if you know it, that is near intramuros area where the COMELEC, the mla cathedral and govenors palace ata yon. there is a circle/rotonda in front of it. the entrance right beside the BIR building is the pier we are saying here. i take it youll know what to do from there. ikot ikot lang sir. ;D

Kasi may nakita ako dito sa Davao na 701XD surplus pero nung ipa-test ko last week, ikot lang ng ikot ayaw magbasa kahit nilinis na ng husto ang lens. Tsaka nagluluko na ang tray pero malamang sa belt lang ng motor yun. Balak ko tawaran ng P200 to P500, tapos kalikutin ko na rin. Kung hindi ko kaya patakbuhin, at least may spare parts kayo dito for your surplus Onkyo CDPs. May tumawag sa akin dito from the Jap warehouses on Friday morning may mga dumating na containers, ang gaganda ng laman na amps and CDs (champagned-colored with wooden side panels) plus iMacs (P6K each) pero hindi pa nababa meron na raw may-ari. Baka mga taga Pier dyan sa Maynila ang pumakyaw dito.

My first tweak would be to replace this opamp. A Mitsubishi M5218L SIP-8 dual opamp which, during it's introduction is a fine opamp to use for general purpose audio but now has been greatly surpassed by more quieter, stable, and better sounding opamps. There are 2 of these at the output stage, one package for the fixed level output, and one for the variable level output.
Sir DIY King, would you care to discuss in plain and simple language what is an OPAMP, it's purpose and in what packages are they available?

It depends on you if you insist for an additional pro-fee hehehe!

Just curious, where is that spring-loaded screw on the mechanism. I'm interested to do something similar on my surplus Yamaha CDP as it continues to have skipping problems when I first play it. Then after while, it's OK.
Determined to follow Sir JojoD’s DIY as posted (just in case I lose one, or two CDPs in the process), I bought two “junk” CDPs "as-is" from a Jap warehouse here in Davao on Monday. No testing is allowed for "as-is" units sold here. What I got were a Sony 502ES and a Kenwood D-3300P, dirty but no scratches. Both models were priced 150,000 yen each when these were introduced in 1984 and 1987 respectively and weighed roughly 10 kgs. each.
When I got home, I found both illiterate: can’t read, so I removed the covers, cleaned the lenses twice with cotton soaked on water first, then cotton soaked on alcohol next. I checked the belts and fine-tuned the disc’s spinning motion through the spring-loaded screw, which affects the CDP’s data-reading capability, and available on both units. I noticed the screws were still factory locked (with paint or transparent glue) and never been adjusted.
After a few minutes, I tested them again and the results were positive. By this time, the units already read fast although both seemed picky with respect to CD-Rs fed. No problem with branded ones such as Imation but only 50% good on CD-R generics, unlike the Onkyos, which sing fast as soon you feed them with a shiny platter.
The Sony 502ES’s sound was initially not that impressive but after three days of 6 hours daily play, it now sounded better compared with the D-3300, which performed well once it started reading data. I still have to appraise the sonic qualities of these two in relation with my existing gears since I was quite busy the past few days, but I’m quite happy with how they look, especially the Kenwood, which is slim and 19-inch wide, with two wooden side panels, walang sugat o galos, and very thick case.

somehow this makes sense, but choosing between dumping an alredy acting up unit or threading a dangerous and uncertain path to make it work as it was before again, well for me is a viable option.

for afterall life is a game of chance and chances not taken. ;D
Worse case scenario is you end up making your cdp so sensitive to vibrations or the other way around.
A more relative comparison is a car, cut it's suspension springs short (lowering) and you'll have a very uncomfortale ride, change it's spring with a longer one and you'll have a wooly ride and loose manuverability.
AS for sandawa's case, maliit lang risk nya since cost of surplus is cheap sa kanila. At least, di masakit sa ulo, natuto ka pa. ;D

Alas.... pre di na nag read.. waaaa pero napa-read ko ulit!! hehehehe after 3 hours nga lang ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Reminder lang mga bro before making any adjustment (for experimentation or exploration hehehe) make sure you get a pencil or permanent pen to point the original setting so that if you fail or if your player becomes worst you can easily set it back to original configuration.
Odyopayl,Good thing about surplus CD players it's easy to make any experiment because of its price. It's easy to make tweak like changing capacitors & fast recovery diode on the power supply, next is OP amp which requires a little research for any direct alternative (upgrade). We have here JojoD & John & some experience fellow members who can help us. Upgrading CD players is really fun! Enjoy it while it plays hehehe! ::)

We're being monitored by traders here in Davao/Mindanao. I went back to the warehouse where I got my CDPs early this week last Saturday and found all Sony ES and Onkyo CDPs gone. Marami sigurong na-inspire sa posts in JojoD! I recall there were about half a dozen Sonys below the 502ES models and two Onkyos (the 701 and 501 I saw didn't look good) early last week. A staff told me this warehouse supplies only by orders from shop-buyers. Maybe some read our posts regularly. I wouldn't be suprised if "tweaked CDPs" are sold by enterprising shopowners in the coming days!

Update on the opamp tweak:
Been using a Burr-Brown OPA264 for about 36 hours staright now and the sound is opening up (at least to my ears). Low end is where it should be while the mids are, still very good indeed. But the most noticeable improvement is the highs which for me has been more detailed, fine and never harsh. This is what I expect since the new opamp is far more superior than the original opamp used. For me, the sound I have now on my cdp is for keeps, I may try other opamps out of curiosity. ;)
Oh by the way... I did tried and biased the opamp into Class A operation and guess what, it sounded warmer! But I eventually went back to Class AB since the opamp biased in Class A is somewhat unnatural, for me at least. ;D

I'm not sure if the dacs you mentioned are pin compatible, but even if they are, I don't believe that they can be drop-in replacements.
Been to Crystal and Analog Device web site, they are the upgrade version and therefore pin compatible. :) The problem is... you're right :(. They are not available locally. >:(

If you have a shop there, maybe you could sell "upgraded CDPs" sigurado daming bibili na miyembro at lurkers. Otherwise, mauunahan ka ng mga enterpising traders dito who maintain two or three technicians per shop.

It's really cheaper here: P800 per unit "as-is" (plus P12 per kilo Pantranco freight if sent there). I've bought five "as-is" CDP units already since December, the last two without the help of a technician, and they all worked fine. Reason why I didn't offer sending units there is, firstly, because I'm relatively busy with my job. Second, the receiver of the units there should understand electronics otherwise, sa sobrang kalog sa bus baka kailangan ng adjustment dahil ayaw ng umandar. But if Superman relocates here and he's not busy, maybe he could do it like a true businessman.
Btw, one Jap surplus importer here has diversified into TV assembly. The brand is PJC (Phil. Japan Corp.) and price of "new units" - I guess chopsuey parts inside - range from P6K to P8K flat screen 25 to 28 inches (incl. widescreen). Parts and labor guaranteed 1 year. I was told the parts were NOS but I think only the tube, transformer and caps are new - the rest from dismantled boards of old Jap TV sets.

tingnan natin ha, andy...kasi each CDP weighs around 10 to 12kgs., allowable lang is 20-kilos...ang bag ko pa (normally 15kgs), mga padalang fruits, fish ni supergirl sa family namin, patay excess pala! :D ...nasa Php39/kilo ang excess baggage ngayon sa PAL, although i'm given extra 10kgs. because of the frequent flyer program, madalas kulang pa rin...pero who knows, baka may good samaritan sa airport... :D :P :D :P

I'm not familiar, either, with that model number although Stereo Review Buyers' Guide of 1989 had Onkyo DX-1500. The DX series were US versions of Japan Onkyo line comprising of Integra 901XD (not released in US - true to claims that Japan's best audio were not sold in US when the yen appreciated); Integra 701XD (Integra DX-7500 - flagship Onkyo model at that time in US) and Integra 501XD (Integra DX-5500 in US). Models below those numbers didn't have the Integra name tag. This was in the late '80s to early '90s. Starting mid-90s, the Integra CDP line starts with C606, based an Audio Magazine 1995 yearend edition.

Just bought three surplus CDPs "as-is" here in Davao at exremely low prices - roughly three units for the price of one at the Pier. Two Sony CDP-502es and a Sony CDP X333es, they all work fine, sound is generally good, could quickly read CDRs but had to replace the belts of two units. I'm keeping the X333 since it has facility for a 3-inch CDs but I'm planning to turn over three 502es units (incl. one I bought last month) to JojoD when I travel to Manila any time in the next 3 months. These are upscale Sony models (160,000yen each) made in mid '80s but need tweaking from a "21st century DIY master." I could see the parts used were premium types but I'm sure these could stand some improvement with newer electronic components. Alam ko maraming nakapila, but I'm willing to wait - I'll keep one and JojoD could dispose of the two other units.

Exposure presented its music rounder and lively, in pinpoint imaging wide soundstage you'll notice the spacing between singer & instruments is very good ( reminded me of Contodo's cd buffer ) timing is good even long hours, CD text but my burned cd usually don't have text hehehe... . for my pioneer, its on the warm side detail is provided with right volume and balance good vocals, separation ok but like the Exposure more.... :) :) maybe due to the channels according to Masta JOJOD shared same Opamp kaya di ganun kalayo separation ng instrument and singer.. ;D ;D ;D or pwede break in konti ;D

Uy Sony 333ES like its presentation compare to 502ES..IMHO sir. ;D ;D
Depende siguro sa support system at sa user's preference. Kasi yung X333es early '90s na lumabas medyo balanse na ang tunog tapos made at a time when CDRs and audiophile CDs were already available. On the other hand, the 502es mabigat ang tunog, which could be harsh on audiophile CDs, kasi nga nung panahon niya, Japanese amps sounded thin at CD recordings were less impressive. So, 502 I think would work best in systems that are based on less powerful amps - siguro below 100wpc RMS - dahil patatabain niya ang tunog. JojoD's challenge could be to remove the harshness in 502es when playing CDs that have high dynamics. Pero, I checked the innards of the two, di hamak mas maganda ang parts na ginamit sa 502es. At heavy siya, about 10 kgs., and yet 502 is quite slim.
Ang napansin ko kasi nun kasalukuyan nasa recovery room yan pioneer na yan, nawala yun magaspang na highs. Buti nga at natyambahan ko, kasi sobra ang nerbyos ni hans nun nasa OR pa yun cdp nya. Buti yun hashness lng ang nawala hindi yun tunog. Nakuh poh! ;D ;D ;D

Here's an update:
My Onkyo surplus cdp went through another extensive makeover in it's psu section. This includes the section that supplies the motor driver and it's controllers. It's too early to do any listening tests but according to my trusted meter, the ripple artifacts throughout the supply section has already improved.

i have auditioned once a sansui alpha sir, i think 3 digit model # non.... matinis sya, harsh sounding..... compared to a denon, ang layo tunog nya and to an entry level sony, mas ok pa ang sony sa tunog. the color was silver if im not mistaken.

This is true now, pero hintay kayo. I got info here in Davao that mid- to upscale models of surplus DVD, SACD-capable, are already coming in. Ang sabi sa akin, as many as 5 units per van (two vans weekly are arriving here) kaya lang nakukuha agad ng mga traders na may cash deposit sa shipper. These traders are from all over Mindanao, thus, the first batch would be going to trader-AV users, yung nakaka-intindi (dahil ang binebenta sa atin dito na brand new models nasa low- to middle category lang). Yung mga nakita ko ditong Jap surplus DVDs mahal pa, mga P6K to P12K pa ang benta. Baka by X'mas meron rin diyan Jap surplus DVD. Sana mura na rin, kapresyo ng mga China generics.

Matibay yan pero sobrang gaan, compared with others, parang walang laman sa loob.

Sir based on earlier "hunts" it really pays to thoroughly test a surplus cdp when it comes to reading various types of cd. Minsan kahit na maganda yun brand namimili din ng cd. Dapat ma tests mabuti kng mabilis pa magbasa, some of the guys here use pcd, orig cd, cdr, pang test. Hindi kasi natin alam ang condition nun lens kaya medyo risky din, but for the price and the chance to test it, it makes the hunting worth your while. ;D

surprisingly, there was no decoupling cap for the opamp. ??? what's more surprising is that the TDA1541 DAC also has no decoupling cap! ::) Only an electrolytic (Nichicon MUSE) was used to bypass the psu.

Tama si DOHbert yung surplus cdp ko nga after a month lang namili na rin ng CD yung mga binabasa nya before biglang ayaw basahin. Ginawa ko lang, nilagyan ko ng baby oil (maganda raw yung ginagamit sa tamiya pero wala ako kaya baby oil na lang) yung support rail at konting linis sa lens.

kung yang 557ESD, tapos mint condition, puwede siguro sa P5K. may nakita akong ganyan dito sa Davao early this year halos doble ng 502ES ang bigat, roughly 15kg, pero manipis. ang laki ng PSU sa likod na naka-usli. ang problema, kahit anong gawin naming linis nung kilala ko sa warehouse, ayaw magbasa.
i talked to a Japanese warehouse owner (engineer) yesterday who was claiming the surplus mid- to high-model CDPs we're buying, especially those in good condition, are superior compared with the brand new ones from Japan and China now sold at prices ranging from $150 to $1,000 (that would retail here from P9K to P60K). i'm not totally sold to that, depende siguro sa condition.
actually medyo nayayabangan ako dun sa Hapon, but there's probably truth to it. i remember talking to a Korean exchange professor on electrical engineering in a university here last year, ganyan din ang sinasabi niya. kaya ako nagka interes dito sa mga surplus na 'to. btw, may nakita ko ditong junk na Trio tube integrated amp, 7 tubes ang nakita ko sa loob, pero disconnected na ang mga wires. tatawaran ko ng P200 baka may mapakinabangan pa.

sa 'yo talaga papunta itong mga naipon kong CDPs (at least yung dalawang 502ES - maganda Sir). ang problema sa courier, mahal ang charge - from P600 to PK yung dalawang units, dahil mabigat. JETOK was supposed to be here last week, papadala ko sana, kahit isa lang, pero hindi dumaan sa akin.
ang sked ko, kung hindi magbabago, i'll be in Manila mid-weekend ng January with my wife and two kids (malaki ang baggage allowance). kung 4 units lang ng audio gears puwede akong magdala. kapag hindi ako natuloy, then, baka mapanis no other option but send them to you by courier.

OT tayo, pero hindi ko siguro papakawalan ang mga Technics ko (SL 1200 and SL-M1). Yung M1 ang maganda, hitsura at construction, pang-bahay talaga, hindi pang-scratch. yung Thorens at Duals (including an original 1219 - circa 1965), collectors items na yun. siguro Chuo Denki pa (made in Japan for Aussie market) puwede kong dalhin. it's a cheaper version of SL 1200 with pitch control, sold to me by a DJ in QC back in early '90s.

Audioslave. OT na tayo, however, I like the arcam, the sound is very clear and refined for me. I have used it for about 50 hrs pa lang. Some have compared it to rotel 1072 and other jolida models with positive reviews. Iceman may be right because I used the two outputs of the WS tono, regardless, both the sony and arcam are very good to my ears.
just to share this info, palagi kong nakakalimutan kasi. last month, i found a universal remote that could control practically all my surplus CDPs - volume and track selection. it's China-made, URC-900, costing P120 and available in many shops here in Davao. it could store memories for 10 remote codes, including TVs and VCRs. anyway, just one unit controls four surplus CDPs in my room - Sony X333ES, Sony 502ES, Onkyo Integra C 901XD and Kenwood DP-3300. it won't work on my Revox, however.
if you want to control CDP volume, all you have to do is use the variable output RCA jack at the back of the CDP (to amp) instead of the fixed output. for those without variable output jacks, only the track selection would work. i've been using it for about a month now and it's been reliable so far. bought two other units of this remote: one for another set of surplus CDPs in my living room, and another as reserve, sakaling magka-ubusan.

Mayroon ba sa inyo diyan na balak nang ipamigay o ibenta yung iba ninyong mga surplus CDPs? Medyo wala kasi talaga akong masyadong budget, tapos ang hirap naman mag-abang sa pier ng ok na model, kaya payag na ako sa third-hand unit. Ang nipis kasi talaga ng tunog ng DVD player ko, tapos unreliable mag-basa yung LD player ko, kaya mukhang kailangan ko na talaga ng dedicated CDP. Wala pa akong masyadong alam paano mamili ng magandang surplus na CDP eh. Help!

actually, naghihinayang din akong pakawalan but a promise is a promise. it was retailed at 150,000 yen during its prime (roughly $1,400 now, but about $750 at mid '80s exchange rate). it has two sets of outputs, fixed and variable, thus could feed music signal to two amps at the same time, and is also generic-remote control compliant (track selection and volume).
i just hope the two units stay in A-1 condition when i arrive there on Friday night.

sir, pareho tayo, the more brands/models you tried and owned, the more you you'll be happy that your favorite units are the best you could afford, and the best for your ears. lalo na sa akin dito sa Davao wala akong madalas ka EB sa surplus electronics kundi yung aso ko. pag tumahol once, okay. pag sunod-sunod, ayaw niya. kung sa shop binili puwede isoli, pag sa warehouse, hindi puwede.
everytime i get the itch to buy good-looking brand new units, amps, speakers or CDPs, i bring my test CDs along, pag walang improvement sa sound i hear in my room during the audition, hindi ko bibitawan ang card ko. the last time nagpa-kaskas ako ng card for brand new audio was in HK's Pacific Place in 1999. ang kunat, ano?

it worked on PCs but i remember it didn't generally catch up on hifi, e.g. UK's Quad 33 amp, which has slots for upgrade cards, built 25 years ago. the problem then was each upgrade card had a price tag roughly 50% of brand-new unit, so cost efficiency is lost. but the Chinese are now selling made-to- modify CDPs and amps. i wish they would revive the Quad experiment in CDPs, with cheaper plug-and-play upgrade cards made for optical circuits, opamps, DACs, etc. wala nang soldering! kapag ganyan, DIY will dominate the market: home-assembled CDPs mounted on surplus units. he-he-he!

Anyway, connected it with a surplus amp I also bought from pier, a Denon PMA390 (for P2,300), and it sounded even better than my HK receiver for 2-channel audio. (I actually went to pier just to scout for an amp to power my bass shakers and ended up buying a CDP as well ;D)
On to my problem, as I mentioned the CD player sounds great. It has no problem reading original material but is picky with pCDs and CDRs. I read somewhere here (i just can't find it anymore ???) that some minor adjustments can correct this problem. Please I need your help. Thanks!

I just bought a Denon DCD1500 from pier last week for P1,900. Is this a good price already? Any experience/comments about this model? Anyway, connected it with a surplus amp I also bought from pier, a Denon PMA390 (for P2,300), and it sounded even better than my HK receiver for 2-channel audio. (I actually went to pier just to scout for an amp to power my bass shakers and ended up buying a CDP as well ;D)

okay, you want to experiment? open your CDP cover. find the variable resistors for focus (FCS) and tracking (TRK) on the circuit board, ordinarily there are four - one each per channel. rotate left or right the adjustment screws using a small philips-type screwdriver. you should do this while playing the CDP - listen thru the headphone of the effects on the adjustments you make.
adjust at your own risk. if you're lucky, you would solve the problem, otherwise, you'll totally ruin your unit.

what's special about Denon DCD-1500, a mid-level model, to be quoted five figures? it was sold in Japan back in early '80s at less than 90,000 yen, way below prices of most Sony ES models. i think you guys should educate those traders at the Pier, otherwise newbies would be duped. that model is sold at P500 here in Davao and if you're lucky, you can get it at P250 from the warehouse as-is. from the traders's shop, it would be sold good condition at P1K, if available.actually i told them that it's way, way too expensive for a surplus CDP. I think they thought that because its gold color can demand for a higher price. Fortunately, I was able to get another Sony ES CDP ;D ::), 333ESA cosmetically mint and ambilis magbasa ng discs, with optical, coaxial digital out plus fixed and variable analog out. Works well with the remote from my other Sony CDP.
the good vintage Denon models are those belonging to DCD-1800 and DCD-3500 series. these were sold from 150,000 to 400,000 yen. here's the Denon hifi museum link that could serve as guide on which gear to look for: http://denon.jp/museum/index.html. hope this helps.

as i've posted before, huwag niyong patulan yung Denon 1500 - mumurahin yung model na 'yun. ang mamahalin yung 1800 and 3500 series. the gold-colored Sony 555 is also expensive for P7K, puwede siguro at P3K if working A-okay. if it has an X before the model number, sirain 'yan compared with the original 555esD. i have those gold X.. ES series lahat nagluluko after a year of use. BTW, i bought those units at P800 each. ngayon, if i can find one - P500 each na lang ang presyo, even for gold units, dito sa Davao.

Meron na rin digital out, toslink or coax. As long as I can remember, even my very first Technics CD player I got in 87 already had digital output. They are present in most mid to flagship CD players in the past and are fairly common in modern players. Those surplus CD players I've seen are mostly 5-8 years old and are mid-priced to flagship models in Japan when they were new. To be sure, you can always ask or inspect the unit's backplane.so I guess one of the difference with these models is they cannot procees 196khz/24bit signals, well what's the highest can they process?

Just curious why bother with first generation CDPs that were quite notorious for nearly unlistenable sonics? The first consumer SONYs and Phllips, while built like tanks, used inaccurate 14-bit and 16-bit DACs considered operationally inferior to today's highly accurate 18-20-bit converters. ???

You're one of my idols here in this forum. I read with interest your posts in other threads. I couldn't butt in though since I don't have the technical savvy most of you guys have in the forum. I can agree with you about the inferiority of the 1st gen CDP's even without knowing much about them. I'm not collecting them though.
I have been asked by Axel of Vintage Knob to keep an eye for them and help him pick up one or two at the surplus stores. I really don't know which units belong to the generation that's why i asked the forum. However, my 2 cents worth, I can appreciate the "covetous fever" that can afflict a collector when he tries to gather historical gems. Sir Sandawa's vision of donating his collection to UP 10 to 15 years from now is also a worthwhile effort and the result if fruitfull will outlast all of us here for generations. Samples of the 1st gen units would be invaluable parts of the collection since they would detail one of the momentous milestones in the history of audio technology.
i guess the situation is different with the vintage Sansui amps and receivers which can keep up with some of the models which came out later.
A new Ford Car will run rings around a vintage Ford Car but people collect them anyway. A friend of mine from the La Salle academe, paid a fortune for a hand cranked "gramophone" that frankly just "squeaked" out the music and he was d**n proud of that gear.
Finally, all that being said about historical value, there's probably money in them gears. Years from now their value will most probably climb up astronomically.

These are the ones commonly available at the pier surplus. The higher levels of Sony CDPs are much rarer and are very quickly picked up. (I've luckily picked up a 337 and a 502 - and a 337 foir a brod.
I need at least two CDPs for my kids' room. Should I wait for the mid level CDPs? My experiece with a Victor CDP is not very good. In fact when I opened it up and compared with the SONYs, the build quality is very much higher for the SONY.

Basta wag ka lang papahalata na nerbiyos ka sa location, better yet magsama ka ng buddy mo.
Usually ang best course of action is to go there, then list the models that you can find that more or less suits your tastes. Then go find a internet cafe shop and surf the models that you have listed. try to learn as much as you can so that when you come back to the shop you already have an idea which is an apple and which is a lemon from the bunch.
Eh sir kahit naman mag search ako sa internet about those cdp hindi ko rin maiintindihan yung mga specs nila... All i can do is pumili ng magandang intsura para sa paningin ko and test it kung nag play, kapag maganda and mura and nag-play ok na sakin...
ngayon ko lang napansin yun Onkyo Integra C-701XD cdp ko August 2004 pa pala nun nakuha ko kay fafa KoYA, sulit na sulit! :o

Di palaging 1500-1800k ang rate, tumitingin sila ng brand. For sony talaga going rate is at least P2000. I bought 2 models with tda1541a in them, umabot ng P2,500. Pinatulan ko narin because of the DAC. ;D

Buy it as-is, say P200. Abrihi ang unit. Naa'y 2 ka variable resistors sa main board. Ang label ana TRK ug FCS, which mean "tracking" and "focus" of the laser unit. You should adjust those two resistors to cure the problem. If despite adjustments, you don't get a good result, that's the time you need a spare laser assembly, which is quite difficult to get (last time I inquired, the quote was roughly $400.)
If Japan domestic 100-volt model and working well, that's a good buy. Re-sale value in Japan is about $200. Original price is 99,000 yen (1991), comparable with Sony's X555ES model.
Just use an old ps1 as cd player.

I agree. For as long as the unit is working perfectly, it could be better than more expensive units. I don't have golden ears myself. With respect to CDPs, sonic superiority of a high end unit over an entry level unit, in most cases, is almost negligible.

Now I regret having passed on those Sansui alpha series CDs a couple of years back. There was a slim a907i CD player here being sold at roughly $30 about five years ago but I didn't get it since I saw rust on its cover's edges. Later, I saw an a707D Limited but the drawer was loose. I didn't know back then that all it takes was a belt replacement, which I now realize is easy. Another issue I have with these models is that they only have one set of RCA jacks, no variable outputs, unlike most Sony ES models.
Anyways, we're luckier here in the Philippines. The local Customs allows easy entry of these equipment since they consider these commodities as hardly having any value. French Customs people are much smarter. Good for us! BTW, Japanese vintage audio equipment in the Philippines are considered poor man's hifi since they are sold cheap. I guess it's the reverse there in Europe.

Haven't you tried the Hifido forwarding service? They sent me an email late last year telling me they now ship overseas. There's also an American guy in Tokyo who referred me to his forwarding business website. He thought I'm based in the US and is bragging about his track record and his forwarding contracts with about a dozen small American technology firms.

BTW, this works for Sony ES CDPs (I still have close to a dozen Sony ES CDPs which I tinker with occasionally) but it may not work for other models and brands. May dalawa na akong CDPs -- TEAC and Marantz, or ADC -- na nasunog ang board dahil sa adjustments ng VRs (I could have shorted some circuits during the process).

The belt is easy, all you need to have is a sample to determine the exact size -- cost of Japan-made replacement belt for CDPs is from as low as P3 to as high as P10 (from my previous purchases). Neighborhood electronic shops usually stock such belts.
The gear is a problem since I can't find the same kind as those installed in Philips/Marantz mechanisms -- at least here in Davao. I have two upscale CDPs made by Philips (which used to own Marantz) with gear problems but read CDs perfectly. Tray is pulled out and pushed in manually.

victor xl z521 got 2 Burr-brown chips PCM54P. According to sandawa ito daw ung code ng Burr-Brown. I dont know anything about Burr-Brown when I buy this CDP I just like the Victor brand because I have a good sounding Vintage victor tuner I also recently buy at 400 pesos. So swerte ko pala hahaha.

If the technician did not disconnect the pick up, look for the variable resistors on the board with the labels TRK and FCS (for tracking and lens focus). You could adjust those resistors, left or right, using a small philips-type screwdriver. If the CD spins during the adjustments and it stabilizes, you'd likely be able to revive it.

I recently acquire a sony cdp 950 it has a tda1541 dac inside. In my opinion it sounds better than my victor xl- z521 which have burr-brown pcm56 Dac. plastic nga lang sony 950. I read some article in lampizator.eu and I am very interested in modifying my cd player. Pero medyo mahirap pala. The easiest mod is adding decoupling capacitor. Will there be significant improvement. The decoupling caps in sony 950 is ceramic cap na 10 k i am planning to add 220K mylar caps just like what ficus the lampizator is suggesting . this capacitor is available. Should I Proceed?

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. I've been reading back on this thread for quite some time now. Finally, having been convinced by several posts that say Surplus CD players from the Pier are good buys, I went there and got one for myself. I picked up a Victor XL-V501 for P2000.

It's still in a pretty good state cosmetically, quite heavy and is equipped with gold-plated RCA line-out (fixed and variable). It plays Original CD's without a hitch and is a really big improvement over playing CD's on my DVD player, although this would be expected. Anyway, I'm having problems with playing non-original CD's and CD's I burned with Toast on my Mac. When playing these kinds of CD's, a sound similar to static is heard, sometimes it's a clicking sound at fixed intervals. I did audition it with CD's that I brought before buying and, needless to say, there were no problems with its sound output at the store. I only noticed it when I hooked it up to my system. I'm frustrated because much of my music collection (FLAC) is on my Mac. I wanna burn them to CD's so I can enjoy listening to them without having to hook-up my computer to my amp.
Are there any adjustments that I can do with regards to the player? Does it need lens cleaning? Can it be repaired or tweaked? Is it worth repairing at all? If nothing can be done, I might just take it back to the store and exchange it for a different unit.
Any input from you guys will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you're looking for lens you can PM gynco. I bought a number of lens from him and so did a number of PDVD members.
