Title: MNET Channel and International Reality Competition Singing Shows
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Aug 01, 2003 at 06:43 PM
[This thread was about certain channels that used to be on Destiny Cable. Since those channels are no longer available, I modified the thread title to reflect the topic that was being discussed most recently on this thread.]

With the loss of AXN, I was about to call Destiny to cancel my subscription, but they're currently test broadcasting a very interesting channel on Channel 47: MNET.

MNET features the following TV shows:

Smallville Season 2
Friends Season 9
24 Season 2
American Dreams Season 1
Boomtown Season 1
Less Than Perfect Season 1
The Secret Life of Us Season 2
Alias Season 2 (? - it says 3, but that hasn't aired yet)
Relic Hunter
Without A Trace Season 1
JKX: The Jamie Kennedy Experiment
The District
Boston Public Season 2
The Wire
CSI and/or CSI: Miami
The Guardian
Fear Factor
Big Brother Africa
Idols Africa
(Franchise of American Idol/Pop Idol)

And during their non-primetime hours, they show stuff like The Oprah Winfrey Show, Jerry Springer and All My Children... plus UNCUT and commercial-free movies.

The schedule that can be found on this site is accurate to what Destiny's been showing: http://www.mnet.co.za Choose MNET West -  the schedule is different from what's listed for MNET Domestic. Just do the time zone adjustment on your own by adding 6 hours to what's listed.

The channel is a TV addicts' trap!  ::)

Whoa.  This is a relief for me too. Pero sayang, no Amazing Race (meron pa kaya sa Studio 23 nito?). Great that Boomtown and CSI Miami are on the line-up though.
Was out of the country for about a week and when i turned on my TV kanina, AXN was gone!  Read in the Inquirer today that AXN was indeed gone from Destiny.  Looks like part of the conspiracy to monopolize cable tv industry.  Hmmm.

I really don't want to switch kaya kahit wala ng sports channels at movie channels ang Destiny, tuloy pa rin ako.  Let's see how long I can last.

Destiny is also promoting an alleged "sports" channel, Ch 57, which to date is showing nothing but a blank screen.  Hope it pans out also.

Movie Magic on Destiny's Channel 48 is also pretty good, and is similarly uncut/commercial free.

Currently showing is Melissa Joan Hart's Drive Me Crazy.

Other movies listed for this week are Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, Bicentennial Man, Ride With The Devil, Hellraiser: Inferno, Final Destination, My Dog Skip, Body Shots, Erin Brockovich, Ready to Rumble, Jerry Springer's Ringmaster, Fearless, Rat Race, Space Cowboys, Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Cape Fear, An Affair to Remember, Boiler Room, etc.

For showtime schedules, go to http://www.mnet.co.za, click TV Guide, select Movie Magic (Africa), then add SIX HOURS to their schedule to convert to Philippine time.

I mean, they can get rid of the heavily censored HBO Asia at this point and I wouldn't mind. :)

ya know what i like best... that they actually show foreign films... not just hollywood movies! i saw a black and white french film (with vanessa paradis) this afternoon. a german film last night... and an taiwanese film earlier this morning! nice!  ;D

oh... and despite the fact that reality tv isn't at all what i expected... my bro and i are appreciating it's programming more and more everyday... current fave show: CHEATERS!!  :P

oh BTW, those shows you listed earlier sir hanky... why are they listed as encoded? does that mean these are the times MNET switches to K (a kid's channel)? so we won't be able to watch those shows? haven't seen any of them kasi.  :-\

I'm not sure what you mean. If you're looking at the M-NET Domestic schedule, then that means the programs are  encoded in South Africa. M-NET airs 2 hours on regular broadcast there, with the rest of the programming via subscription, and as such, is encoded.

You should look at the schedule for M-NET West (Africa). The schedule seems to perfectly correspond with what Destiny's been showing if you add 6 hours to the listed time. Hence K-TV was probably on from 3:00PM-7:20PM? I wasn't watching, so I'm not sure. But the schedule is accurate for the current Forever Fever broadcast on that network.

yeah... i get it... i just get confused why they switch to k-tv sometimes. bago pa lang kasi... so i'm still getting used to the schedule...  siguro i need to print it out or something.  :-\

just finished watching "without a trace". a TV series with eric close (of taken and dark skies).... not bad. stories are pretty good. very CSI-ey and 24-ish.

well... time to watch big brother africa.... it's live eviction night!  ;D

idols... their take on "american idol" was pretty okay. medyo halata na 3rd world pa rin ang africa... parang matipid on production value...

as expected... magaganda ang mga boses ng contestants... a far cry from their american counterparts... can't wait to see who gets in the top ten in the "results show" tomorrow!

 ;D

uh... being that parang nawala bigla ang MTV SEasia, baka naman pwede na lang nila kunin ang SeriesTV... also on the same network as Mnet and MovieMagic.  :o

Isa pang di natutulog.  ;D I actually just set the VCR for that show, since I had to get some sleep, and I haven't seen it.

Spiff, pa-notify naman dito or by PM kung kailan yung next Operacion Triunfo on TVE...  Hehehe...

i think operacion triunfo 3 will start this october pa... auditions are ongoing tho! i'll keep ya posted on when it'll start na talaga.

i just hope matitino yung mga new contestants...the last batch 2 batches were pretty amazing! PLUS! i have a cousin who going to madrid to study just in time for the show to start airing! hopefully she'll be able to buy all those triunfo CDs! he he he ... mas adik pa nga ata yun sa aken when it comes to OT.

back to topic:

i also enjoyed watching "less than perfect" during their open time sched. andrea parker can be funny pala! LOL.

HEY DESTINY! SeriesTV na lang ipalit ninyo sa MTV SEasia! :P

BTW, "hedwig" is playing as i type... i'm sure "uncut" ito compared to the chopped up version on HBO!

Actually, it's the other way around, Spiff. What you saw was the FINAL episode of Less Than Perfect. Life With Bonnie begins in that timeslot with its pilot episode next week, so I fixed the schedule already.

I'm about halfway through Idols. The performances are okay, but the judges are nothing compared to Simon/Paula/Randy from American Idol or Simon/Nicki/Neil/Pete from Pop Idol. All that black female judge says is "You were great," the guy on the extreme left just tries to be unpleasant without any actual substance in his comments, and the other two only say "You have 'it' " or "You don't have 'it.' " Hopefully they'll give more insightful comments or at the very least  start arguing more soon...  ::)

aaaaah! ganun ba? ok... i just finished watching "friends". which was preceded by the BBA daily show and the Idols results show.

ur right... the judges were boring... and predictable. i forgot to mention that in my last post... but i am always amazed at the talent... magaling talaga kumanta ng mga africans... they have this "rhythm"-thing down pat.

i didn't agree with one of those in the hotseat... and while i liked those who got through to the final ten... i think the girl who sang the end song deserved that spot more. sana mapili sya for the wildcard show. malapit na pala ang finals nito... within the month. (trying to not to spoil it for ya by naming names... in case ya haven't watched the results show yet.  ;D)

hmmm. i feel like digging out those old OT tapes... if i haven't overtaped them yet! (aaaargh!)

Agreed. Or even the chubby girl who sang "Georgia On Her Mind". I only liked Nazneen from their choices.

Not yet! Next week there's the final 8, the following week there's the Wild Card show, then after that, they eliminate one Top 10 member every week, starting August 24th. The Finals are scheduled for October 19th.

i was thinking the same thing! nazneen has "star" written all over her! posoletso was good... but zama kind of reminds me of the young monica. i just though her song choice didn't showcase her talents enough. yeah... i know what you mean about the girl in white... you could see the disappointment in her face when they said she wasn't advancing!

Are you going to watch that? It's about 5 episodes into the second season already, so it might be hard to understand what's going on in this serial. CSI: Miami na lang - at least that one is episodic. They'll be showing Season 1, Episode 8. Funny, it's actually ahead of what's on M-NET Domestic, which is only on Episode 6.

Yeah, considering that in the pilot they just showed on AXN, she was like a female Grissom; then on that episode last night, her role was like... "Greg".

I do feel very bad for her, since her joining the cast was a major deal that received a lot of press, then to be let go midseason - sakit!

(http://wwwimage.cbs.com/primetime/fall_preview_2002/images/shows/presidio_med/header.jpg)

PRESIDIO MED is a medical drama about a team of hard-working physicians who run a tight-knit medical group adjacent to a hospital in San Francisco. At a time when the world of medicine is becoming more impersonal, the doctors at Presidio Medical Group set bureaucracy aside and put their patients first, forming trusting, long-term relationships. They are Dr. Harriet Lanning (Blythe Danner), a veteran ob/gyn who still loves getting up in the middle of the night to deliver babies; Dr. Rae Brennan (Dana Delany), an oncologist with a passionate, adventurous side; Dr. Letty Jordan (Anna Deavere Smith), a headstrong, in-your-face cardiologist; Dr. Jackie Colette (Sasha Alexander), a brash young plastic surgeon; Dr. Jules Keating (Julianne Nicholson), a confident and fiercely independent pediatrician; Dr. Nicholas Kokoris (Oded Fehr), a surgeon who has just moved to San Francisco from Greece to join Presidio Med -- and to hopefully continue an affair with one of the group's married physicians; and Dr. Matt Slingerland (Paul Blackthorne), a handsome renegade internist with a tendency to bend the rules. Although their personal beliefs, unique experiences and medical specialties are sometimes at odds, each of these professionals is committed to going beyond the examining table and connecting on a more personal level in support of their patients.

Airs every Thursday at 9PM on M-NET. The pilot episode aired tonight. Interesting, but a bit too heavy on the estrogen. Very inspired casting, though.

I can't get into their Big Brother. It's difficult to understand them a bit, since they all have different African accents. Idols is okay, since they're mostly South African so the accent is common, and it's really just the singing/judges comments you listen to, anyway - not really conversations you need to understand. Problem lang if you can't tape it is it airs way too late, unless you're a vampire.  ::)

Haven't seen enough of the African version to compare. But the UK one has cameras inside the shower. In BB1, one guy discussed performing in a live sex show in the Philippines; and there was the time 2 girls and 2 guys got naked, covered their bodies in mud, then made impressions of their nude bodies on the wall. BB2 had three naked girls in one tiny bathtub, beckoning a guy to "service" them.

May ganun ba sa Africa?  ;D

BB2 had three naked girls in one tiny bathtub, beckoning a guy to "service" them.

Did he?  ;)

I downloaded this clip of this Big Brother episode in some European country where they showed the couple going to the bedroom, putting pillows and matresses in all of the places they thought there was a hidden camera (good thing there was another cam they didn't know about) and then doing the dirty tango. That was cinema verite at its most entertaining.  :)

HAHAHA! Kayo ha...you have this thing for voyeurism ha?!!!  ;D

Question: Idols is in what part already? Wildcards? Top 10?  ???

King? Me? Pshaw! You could be "kings" too, you know. Try flirting with Reichen or Chip or Aaron or ChaChaCha or Al via email...hehe. ;D

[off-topic] Dave (ATC) sent out TAR flags (and other TAR souvenirs) to his fellow "Camerites" (fellow posters at a certain board). Sayang I came to that site a bit too late...hehe.  ;D [/off-topic]

Ah, Big Brother Hungary! Teka, bakit ko alam yun? Rewind, rewind... ;)

First 6 in Top 10 already chosen. Final 8 this weekend for the next 2 slots, then wild card show for the last 2 slots next weekend.

whoa! that's not raunchy! that's downright ... (i can't even say it!)

no. (unfortunately) BB Africa is not anything like that! although... if you register and look that gallery on the website... dun walang censorship! pakita na lahat ... even the shower cam! (pati si bayo, the fat guy... di nakawala!)

and as far as i know only 2 people in the BBA house are "getting it".

JEEEZUS! pati hungary pinatulan mo sir hanky! (now it makes me wonder how OT espana and FAMA brazil was being shown right under your nose unnoticed for the last 2 years...LOL.) how about BB france. di ba meron din sila?

The BB Hungary clip was very controversial, it turned up on Reality TV forums last year and was endlessly linked to.

What is FAMA Brazil? Is that like the UK's FAME ACADEMY? Speaking of which, I also have a DVD of that latter one. Hehehe! I actually prefer that show to the IDOLS franchise, since it's like a cross between IDOLS and BIG BROTHER. The best of both worlds.

Did you watch this week's IDOLS, Spiff? I think Anke, Michelle and Irene will make the hotseats for final three.

Pero si Palesa yung binoto ko... ;)

ha ha ha... i like watching reality TV shows... pero it's only now that i have gone as far as actually turning to the internet for info. ;D

yes. fama brasil  is exactly like fame academy of the UK... but i think they have renamed the show to "operacao triunfo" or something like that... OT espana is also just like that... i think lahat ng franchise ng star academy follow the same formula... a cross between "pop idol" and "big brother". kaya nga i LOOOOOVE those shows. frustrated singer kaya ako??? hmmmmmm. LOL.

(did you watch the EUROBEST competition?... the winners of the franchise from spain, uk, russia, france, greece, etc... all competed to find out who was the best...the spanish winner was replaced from one of the cast members from last year kasi she had her throat operated on... and that replacement actually WON!!! i think the uk rep was a black guy... the judges were the headmasters from each franchise. it was a close points race between spain and france!)

yes. i saw the show last night...  i'm personally rooting for anke! she was great... the guys IMO all stank! if one of them gets in... then he doesn't deserve it! (i'm specifically referring to wafeeq. definite boy band material.)

I didn't see it, but that was Lemar. He was the judge's favorite so they never placed him on probation, but as soon as the public had a chance to vote him off... I'm intentionally not saying more in case you haven't seen FAME ACADEMY so I don't spoil it if you get a chance to.

Did you see on the site? M-NET is currently negotiating for the rights to the UK's Pop Idol 2, for airing on... The Series Channel. Let's write Destiny and tell them to replace Movie Magic with Series, since most of Movie Magic's films are shown on M-NET, anyway.

Then all of us will no longer get any sleep.  ;D

i don't really follow fama brasil... pero it piqued my interest kasi ang galing nung winner nila! (only to discover later on that it was being shown on one of the foreign language channels on cable! currently channel 84 sa destiny... i think. i caught it one morning a couple of months ago!) she performed during a special for OT espana along with italy and mexico's winner. and the brasileña blew them all away... i think i taped that show... ma-revisit nga... it's called the "gala ganadores"... winners gala.

i'm not fluent in spanish or portugese... kaya i watch OT with a dictionary in hand... funny 'noh? LOL.

That's odd. You might be getting one of the different feeds, not the MNET West one. The schedules/times are a little different. But it shouldn't affect the IDOLS results show, since that one is really live. Hmm... weird.

iba nga ang programming ng mnet west and mnet domestic...

i noticed for example that mnet domestic doesn't have oprah... while mnet west (which is what destiny is airing) does.

also... daily ang "american dreams" sa west... while weekly sya sa domestic.  :-\

baka nga mas friendly ang oras sa sched ninyo hashpipe. baka umaga na (as in may araw na!) ang idols and big brother sa inyo. and not in the wee hours of the AM... like our "west sched"... i know only the results show of idols (3:30 AM Tuesday) and the nomination/eviction show of big brother (3AM Monday) are live.

I think that even though it's taped, the performance show of IDOLS is also broadcast simultaneously on all MNET networks, since there's the specific time period viewers are allowed to vote.

When they're down to the top 10, I wonder if it'll actually be live, or still just "taped-as-live."

I just realized that sky really sucks. The lifestyle channel  has more cooking shows and less interior decorating shows than i care to watch. The star channels aren't that  interesting too.  I miss my tech tv and FOX news.

I heard though that the NTC or whatever governing body it is that is in charge of cable will be issuing a law or something that not providing a certain channel to all cable providers that are willing to pay for em will be illegal.

I wasn't watching Alias on this channel, but I'm assuming last week's episode was the Season Finale? The show should be back for its new season in a few months.

Spiff, did you see the Idols special they aired mid-week, where they featured the contestants from all the different African countries who made the Top 100? Some were really bad, huh?  8)

sana nga NTC does something quickly! Parang walang political will e the state owns the airwaves. Pinapatay nila ang Destiny kasi virtually debt free sila while Sky is buried in debt by billions! I confess I switched to Sky kasi I miss the Monday comedy shows of StarWorld like Everybody loves Raymond and FRasier. Pero I also love the movies on MM. GREAT "surprise twist" at the end of the show, huh? I was expecting it when I heard the voices of the Wild Card contestants - too many to cut down to two.

Personally, I think Zama gave the second best performance, but it's thisclose. My top four are:

1. Francisca
2. Zama
3. Khwezi
4. Andy

But I think one of them might be bumped by the female judge so she can add one more male contestant to the top 12 - probably Lwazi, since he sucked less.  ::)

yeah! i thought francisca was veeerrry good. pero i'm such a huge believer in zama's talent. zama and francisca picked their songs very well....

i like andy too... she shows such character (and such BALLS for singing a ditty like "neverending story") ...but i read in post on the site na some people think they might not let her in because she was TOO WHITE? hwe??? isn't that craziest thing you've heard?  :-X

here's my picks:

1. zama
2. francisca
3. khwezi
4. kgomotso

but ur right due to the lack of testosterone on the top 12... they just might opt for a male contestant...  >:(

LOL... i was shocked nga how spot on i was for that round... i'm usually not that lucky sa pagpili. (now if only i can apply this newfound luck sa lotto... ha ha ha.)

actually, i was torn between kgomotso and bonolo for that last place... but i went for kgomotso kasi i found it uncanny na kamukha nya si brandy (and zama looks like monica.. duet sila ng "boy is mine0". he he he.)... and that she chose such an "unconventional" song.  :P

i almost didn't catch the show rin nun sunday... destiny conked out sa area namin... it took them over 12 hours to fix it nag eh... so i called my cousin's friend and she was gracious enough to place the phone near the TV so i could hear the performances... pathetic 'no?  ::)

randall, as usual, was such an a*hole. he made the contestants wait until after the commercial break before he finally called out francisca's name! akala ko nga di sya matatawag eh! (of course i was clapping my hands hysterically nung tinawag yung name ni zama!)

Somebody does not like these channels,,hmmm, wonder who?

Following is a quote from a column from Philstar.com dated today.

.
.
.

HIDDEN AGENDA By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes
The Philippine Star 08/20/2003

Will NTC act on signal pirates?

Cable TV operators are asking the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to act decisively on signal pirates and implement existing laws on the carriage of content.

The issue of signal pirating came to fore after Destiny Cable allegedly started carrying channels pirated from a South African DTH (direct-to-home) service in the guise of a "test broadcast". Destiny began airing M-NET Variety, Movie Magic and Super Sports which are not licensed for carriage in the Philippines. The signals of the three channels are being picked up from DTH provider M-NET without the benefit of commercial programming arrangements.

The NTC has been trying to formulate rules that will put foreign program providers under its jurisdiction, just as cable is. However, it seems it has not done enough to implement existing rules, in particular, those against signal piracy that rob legitimate cable operators of revenues and market share.

There are also reports that Destiny was illegally downlinking MTV Asia too. That is why when MTV encrypted, Destiny was cut.

Let us just hope that NTC commissioner Armi Jane Borje will look into this matter seriously so she can prove to everyone that she is not favoring Destiny, especially after rumors have it that she once lawyered for Destiny?s broadband affiliate.

Since I called you Khwezi, shouldn't that be "Zama moooo!"? :P

On the loss of the M-NET channels... well, I actually was expecting this. The only thing that actually gave me hope that these channels would last was that when you register at the M-NET web site (To access the Idols/BB Africa sites), the Philippines is included in the drop down list of countries. So I was crossing my fingers it was somehow authorized. Maybe they'll find a loophole somehow.

This is much like the time Sky lost the illegal ABC, CBS and Showtime/Comedy Central feeds they were carrying.

I'll miss Idols a bit. But that's about it.

Thanks for the heads up. Not sure I'm gonna be watching this, since my Spanish is pretty bad, but I might try to catch the performance nights. Where can I find the sched for TVE?

Modifying the thread title...  :P

it's not that hard... maraming filipino words na spanish yung origin. so you pick up a word or two and makukuha mo rin...

performance nights (or "gala" as they like to call it) is every tuesday at 5AM... dito rin ginagawa yung eviction and nominations. the daily 30-minute shows are tues to sat at 2AM. (yes... may daily show din on tuesdays... so tuesdays have 2 shows... the daily and the gala.) then a recap show on sunday mornings called "la semana" hosted by nina, the academy's headmistress. the schedule can viewed at www.rtve.es

tomorrow's show is also a gala... also known as gala 0. the twenty hopefuls will perform sans any prior instruction... 15 will be chosen by judges, 1 by the professors and another by the viewing audience. it's a long show... it usually ends around 7 or 8. para may time yung tao maka-vote. the spanish commercials are funny though... sana they still air the "donnetes" and the "blah blah" commercial. :P

Looking at the schedule, it looks like they moved the daily show, and it will air at 3:25am-3:45am Philippine Time from Wednesdays-Saturdays?

I hope I don't like this show, or my VCR is in for another daily workout.

Quote

They receive no instructions prior to the first performance show? Ah, now my DVD of Fame Academy makes a bit more sense.  No wonder they really sucked in that, giving the teachers something to gripe about during the first week at the Academy.

yeah you're absolutely right... my bad. the daily show sched changes... depending on the sched of TVE... sometimes napre-pre-empt. so i make it a point to check the show sched weekly. plus minsan they start early or late... i'm usually on the tube by 3.  ;D

(i always get a kick when they show them during english class)

yah... last year the guys who sucked big time sa gala 0 turned out to be swans in the making... the girl who won... was not favored by the teachers nor the judges (i think she was nominated 4 times...) but she shone so bright sa gala 13 that on gala 14 (the last one! finals!) she got almost 50% of the tele-votes!

i still love listening to the gala 13 CD! ;D

yan nga lang request ko sa 'insan kong patungong madrid... the gala CDs... (he he... spoken like a true fanOTico.)

Let me correct my earlier post:

Based on the current program showing, "La Botica De La Abuela" (10:10AM on the web site schedule grid, currently 4:10PM Philippine Time), I think the 22:00 gala might be at 4:00AM; and the daily shows ARE at 2:25AM after all.

Just so you don't miss it.

thanks for the info, i'd hate to miss it... may daylight saving time din kasi sila... so maybe di pa in effect... can't wait...

(la botica de abuela... it's that herbal medicine show! he he he.)

sana mapanood mo rin... usually kasi when i go on rambling about this show... maraming di maka-relate.

i saw an ad sa GMA na may ganito na rin dito sa atin... "starstruck" ata yung pangalan... coming soon pa lang... ha! i doubt kung papatok... filipinos seem to always ham it up when there's a camera around. :P

kakatapos lang ng gala 0... i wonder kung may "la academia" na mamya (this is the 30 minute show where the headmistress nina gathers the "survivors" so that they can reflect on the just-finished gala and answer some sms messages sent by fans.)

shucks! la academia is starting! the kids are in the hall of the academy already!...  ::)

hope ya caught it... wondering what you thought about it...  :P

I think... this is one reality show I can't discuss with you, sorry.

I didn't find the selected students talented enough for me to try to sit through the language barrier a second time.

I like Fame Academy since the students mainly sing contemporary/classical pop and rock tunes, with a few ballads thrown in for the less talented of the group. Operacion Triunfo already had me struggling with the never-heard Spanish tunes, and completely lost me by the time they had the huge guy singing "Why, why, why... Delilahhhh!!!"

Give me back Posoletso any time.

aww... that's too bad. :( (actually, i felt the same way you did the first time i saw it... but i didn't write them off that quickly. as i kept on watching, the show just drew me in. i caught OT1 and OT2 sa gitna na rin myself BTW. i guess, it's really just an acquired taste. ;D)

i must admit the language thing is a bit difficult... but the spanish songs aren't half bad... in truth, i learned to appreciate them nga eh. ;) (true. some of them seem really ridiculous! but there are some pretty good ones din.)

the succeeding galas will definitely be better kasi the teachers will choose the songs instead. as for "delilah"... i was bawling in laughter while he was singing... di ko ma-gets kung bakit yun ang pinili nyang kanta! ha ha ha! ::)

what i find fascinating about this particular franchise is that they are not only drilled to "sing, sing and sing" but to be a total performers. they learn poise, interpretation, music theory, writing, style, etc. ... even acting! (tapos may psych sessions pa sila every week.) and i think that spells the difference when you watch them from this morning's gala to the finals. (yung winner last year ganyan din... frumpy "piyok-girl" sa start... later on ibang-iba na sya.) i would loved to see more of fame academy din... para ma compare just how differently the students are taught. kasi dun ako mas interesado. he he he.  the performance nights are just icing on the cake. :P

ako naman, personally, mas na-a-appreciate ko na hindi puro english songs ang pinapakanta (only 2 per gala). i mean after all, these kids are supposed to be "stars" in their own countries... so i find it better na they are taught to sing in their native tongue rather than belt out american top 40 hits or standards... kaya nga medyo na-disappoint ako na halos puro "english songs" din ang mga kinanta sa ating "star for a night". fortunately for fame academy though, english IS their mother tongue :-\

it IS more than 2 hours... it started at exactly 4 and finished just after 6:30. there was a 20 minute feature shown (presumably to give them time to travel from the studio to the academy) then "la academia" was shown... boring pala unang la academia puro introductions... later on, as may natatangal ang may nano-nominate... maraming iyakan at awayan na dyan... he he he.  :P

the judges here are cruel... parang lahat sila simon black! they say stuff like... "you're not good enough."... "you didn't learn anything from the academy." ugh! it's terrible! good thing is they take turns: one judge is to one student... they don't all lambast you on one show.  ;D

i think the nomnation rules have changed a bit tho. carlos explained that kanina.  ::)

meron na? ooooo.....  ;D (go zama! go nazneen! go posoletso!)

unfortunately wala eh...  :( nagkataon lang  na my cousin left (as of yesterday) for spain to learn higher spanish. kaya i finallly DON'T have to download all those OT gala and special release CDs! (unless umangal siya sa mahal ng mga discs na iyon.... 13 euros ata isa.) *sigh of relief!*

teka teka! how do you guys watch fame academy anyway? my only exposure to this show was when they sent a contestant for the eurobest competition (and of course, the net) who won ba? was it that black guy they sent to the "eurobest competition"... BTW, france placed second sa eurobest...  think england was 5th or something. i myself wasn't too impressed with his performance noon.  ;)

OMG! it's such a relief to find out that i am not the only soul in this island who actually watches OT. (i missed out on this AM's show, napagod kami sa kaka-pack for my cousin, i slept like a log ... anyone care top fill me in on what happened?)

this week's gala looks promising... the special guest will be rosa (OT1 winner)... i'm not sure kung may nominado na by the end of gala 1 kasi ang alam ko is sa may gala 3 or 4 pa ang unang elimination.... :P

i thought may mag-aaway na especially after sinugod ni miguel sila vicente and israel for being too noisy.

the "consursantes" i am looking out for are divinia (veeerrry cute!), miguel, ramon, noellia, nuria, vicente and ysabel. but who knows... i wasn't an ainhoa (OT2 winner) fan until about gala 6.... :P

yes! they eat a lot... kinda reminds you of filipinos 'no?

muntik na akong masuka when i heard them sing "compleanos feliz" to nina! ugh! ipinanganak pala yung babaeng iyun... honestly tho, she CAN sing incredibly well. and is a fantastic teacher/performer unfortunately, she can be such a b!tch sometimes. be warned! this headmistress plays favoritos...

BTW, the piscina (pool) thing happens every week... it's part of their physical training. i wasn't able to watch this morning's show, but it should have been their first psych session.  ;)

p.s. asan na si helen??? she was my favorite profesora from the last 2 years... i wonder if she got stuck in london... she's the only non-spanish in the faculty pa naman ata.

p.s.s. in case anyone is interested ... i was able to tape last year's gala ganadores (featuring the top 3 of OT2 plus mexico, brazil and italy's winners) and genracion OT (which has all the contestants from OT1 and 2.)

Was checking out amazon and saw that they have the OT soundtrack. I downloaded the hit song "Color Esperanza" which led me to Diego Torres, which I thought was the winner. Pero he was the actual singer of the song pala and cover version lang yung sa OT. Its a great song by the way.

Pero i'm very pleased because I like what I've heard and can't wait to order all of Diego Torres' albums.

hmmmm. OT soundtrack???  you might be referring to the gala CDs. one of the students (enrique anaut) sang "color esperanza" for gala 0. so his version appears in that gala's CD. (which i don't have yet! wah!)

but diego torres re-sang "color esperaza" (with the academy's students providing back-up vocals) for OT2's 2-disc christmas album: "la fuerza de la vida" ... (yeah, that i have already... it's track 1 on disc 2). i like this track too!... among many, many, many others!

i saw diego perform this song during their christmas gala last year... mr. torres is a pretty good live performer. (and quite "diminutive"... as i recall. he he he.) he was a visiting professor at the academy kasi. another big name who appears on that album is kenny g.  ;D

which? the one by enrique at gala 0? or the one with diego torres and the OT2 contestats? if it's the latter and ya like it... then from the same album i HIGHLY RECOMMEND:

"duerme safiya" by chenoa (4th place OT1, she wrote the song), chicas de academia OT2 y academia OT2 (has a very "lion king" feel to it.)

"un segundo el camino" by academia OT2

"la fuerza de la vida" by academia OT2

i guess tama na muna yan...  but to be honest ok naman yung album albeit very christmas-ey...  :P

I saw the second OT performance show. Interesting. I like the way they intersperse the happenings of the week before each performance. Are those like recaps of the daily shows?

One thing I noticed: The voting process is reversed from Fame Academy. On that one, the voting public chooses to save one of the three students on probation, and the contestants themselves vote for who among the remaining two gets to stay.

When do they announce the results, Spiff? On next week's show?

actually that's new. dati kasi... during the breaks, actual commercials from the spanish broadcast are shown. (kaya nga i miss the "blah blah blah" and donnetes commercials.) this whole "in-the-week-that-was"-thing just started with this season. (in a way it's good kasi now i don't have to faithfully watch the daily shows. ;D)

the voting process is new... even the way the program is different from last season.

before kasi, the contestants would all sing one after the other (of course, with the obligatory video montage of how they prepared for that week in between.)

after all have done their numbers, the host will call out the week's "favorito" as voted by the audience. the favorito automatically gets to stay in the academy.

the judges (who seemed much harsher the last 2 seasons) then take turns in calling out the remaining students and weed out the ones who will stay in the academy from the 4 contestants they will nominate for eviction. of the 4 who get nominated, one will be "saved" by their fellow students and another by the teachers... leaving 2 students in the "hot seat". votes will be accepted during the week and by next week the one with the least votes gets evicted.

it's not uncommon for the 2 nominees to find a way to redeem themselves from their previous week's dismal performance. last year's winner was in the hot seat THRICE. yet each time she saved herself by turning in a good performance in the following week. (that dazzling performance she put in for gala 13 is still etched in my mind! how i wish i could have taped that!)

so by next week we find out who get's booted off first!

p.s. was i the only one laughing hysterically while there doing that whole "chorus line" thing!

cuteness seems a big factor in keeping you in the academy these days... i suppose it's no coincidence that the 2 better looking guys are in the 1st and 2nd place respectively! (pati kastila pala mahilig din sa may itsura! and yet mediocre lang sila, talent-wise.)

told ya! super iyakan during the 2nd "la acedemia"! kawawa naman si sonia... oldest concursantes pa naman siya at 29.

i saw helen rawson at last! finally at teacher whose first language wasn't spanish! it's funny how you can tell... may punto spanish nya eh.  ;)

sorry for the long post...  ::)

Title: Re:MNET/Movie Magic on Destiny Cable: Discussions of programs
Post by: viper on Oct 14, 2003 at 10:57 AM

~~~~end of quote~~~~~
And there is talk now that Destiny and Global Cable ( a known signal pirate) have already merged with Destiny concentrating on the data business while Global taking over the cable subscription business.
The Commission should go after signal pirates masquerading as  operators and not favor certain entities by issuing self serving memo circulars! ( as interfering in channel arrangements and legitemate contracts of operators with program providers )
So wait, let me get this straight: When you get voted off, you're asked to stay until the end of the show and forced to sing the closing number while you're crying... then you're given a brand new car, but it turns out to be... a FIAT???
Talk about adding insult to injury!  ;D
yup! (pero natakot din ako talaga!)
actually yung mga natanggal last year walang kotse (even the winners)... i think this year... lahat sila meron... but carlos wants to keep it hush-hush... para di malaman ng ibang contestants.
as for the "walk/singing of shame"... yup... it has always been like that... but it's not really that bad... the evicted will still continue their studying in the "post-academia"... some of the teachers there are from the academy rin. (BTW, after the "crying walk"... usually dapat sibat na... it just happened differently this time... para mapakita yung kotse. baka sa susunod di na ganun.)
as a rule... all the the first singles of the contestants will be released by vale music (one of the show's main sponsors) ... siguro by november... may single na si ysabel. where that single will take her... asa kanya na... only the top 6 contestants are guaranteed a contract by vale music for their first album. but if may potential yung iba... ino-offer din ng kontrata.  :P
Its also interesting na bumabalik pa sa house after the show, for one last time, yung person voted off for a despedida. I think its also great na their training is still continued after they're voted off.
Who will you be voting off? Jorge or Fede?
Btw, spiff, nagpabili ka ba sa cousin mo nung Operacion Triunfo la pelicula?
Huh?
If the top six are all guaranteed record contracts, and the evictees are still given lessons after being voted off... then what the heck is the point of this show? Why should we even bother finding out who the winner is?
Weird.
Oh, if Delilah-guy gets the boot next week... I'm not sure he'll fit in a FIAT.
i haven't really talked to her except through text... she's really busy settling in eh... she's staying there for several months kasi. but don't worry... i'll remind her about it.  ::)
takot si fede (as evidence by his deer-in-headlights expression after the gala)... mukhang well liked kasi ng crowd si jorge... talent wise, i think jorge beats fede... but as for "star" potential... hmmmm.... medyo kulang si jorge dun.
yup... there is a sort of "goodbye time" sa academy. i was surprised na hindi nga ginawa sa rehearsal hall... dun dati yung ginagawa... it was funny seeing nina trying to get rid of ysabel... nauubos na kasi oras nila eh... panay ang "vamonos!" nya! LOL.
Huh?
Oh, if Delilah-guy gets the boot next week... I'm not sure he'll fit in a FIAT.
while all six (yung matitira sa huling gala) are guaranteed record contracts... the "size" of the contract is different. the top three of course get better producers and writers... for example, OT2 winner's album was produced by emilio estefan... and featured jon secada, shakira and dianne warren as just some of the writers. she even recorded the album in miami... (don't worry! you'll see all this pag nabigay ko na sa 'yo yung gala ganadores ng OT2. ;D)
the point of having a "post-academia" is para di naman masayang yung naumpisahan na. di ba? i mean para saan pa yung magandang initial training nila kung babalik pa sila sa dati rin nilang buhay.
aside from seeking future stars... the major thrust of the show is to decide who will represent spain in the eurovision songfest. and the top three will have to fight it out for that "privilege".
Nope. Jacques just got eliminated. Anke got the most votes.
Now it's down to Posoletso vs. Anke... A classic "black & white" confrontation.  :)
Oh, and as a special bonus for next week's finale: Idols 1 champion Heinz Winckler will be a special guest star, performing alongside... Pop Idol 1 runner-up Gareth Gates.  ;D
really???? wow! i must admit i'm afraid posoletso will get the majority vote dahil people might turn this into a "white/black supremacy" thing and obvious naman na mas maraming "black" sa africa... (still! my vote goes to anke... may kulang kay posoletso that i just can't seem to put my finger on. ;D)...   ;)
yeah i heard nga na guest sila... nun pa ata in-announce yun sa website. i also read na baka magkaroon ng "international pop idols showdown" with winners from all editions of simon fuller's "pop idols" (both season one and two for some countries) slugging it out. kanino ka hankey? hirap ata pumili nun...
Not that hard. I'm only familiar with the singing voices of two of the winners, Will Young and Kelly Clarkson. I don't even know what Rueben (?) sounds like.
So I'd go with Clarkson. Not to worry, I know there's someone else on this thread who will support Will all the way...  ::)
(hilig din ba nya si guarini? hee hee.)
reuben is good... maganda boses talaga! no doubt about it... he reminds me of jorge sa OT... pero may kulang sa kanya. a presence as a "pop star".
wow! believer ka rin pala sa boses ni kelly clarkson! i LOOOOOVED her album! galeng! i recently was able to hear her version of king's natural woman and grabe! napanganga ako!  :o
will young is okay (maski nga si gareth gates and darius... ok din) pero i find them too much in the "boyband" mold...   :-\
Her "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" is pretty good, too. She's one white woman with soul!  8)
But I really prefer Tamyra Gray. Have you heard her "A House Is Not A Home"? I'm actually looking forward to season three of Boston Public despite the departures of my favorite cast members Jessalyn Gilsig and Nicky Katt since I really want to hear Tamyra perform more songs.
what?! si tamyra gray yun? i've been watching "boston public" since the start and never even knew na si tamyra gray yun! where are those reruns when you need 'em??!!!
natural woman is the b-side of miss independent... pero wala sa album. i just wish they would stop editing down those songs to under 3 mins... okay lang kung para sa show/live performance... pero sana naman yung para sa CD buo yung kanta.
minsan nga when i wake up real early... i try to catch "sabrina: the teenage witch" on star world... in the hopes of catching kelly's pre-"american idols" appearance there.
speaking of "boston public", wasn't the guy in "not another teen movie" the same guy who held jessalyn gilsig hostage in a "boston public" episode in season one... he looks the same, pero the hair color seems different. which makes me wonder if it's the same guy.
No, Tamyra Gray only joins the cast in season three, so you won't catch her on any Star World/Studio 23 reruns just yet. She plays a new student.
Quote
Which one? The former student who was obsessed with her? He wasn't in "Not Another Teen Movie," he was in "Whatever It Takes," which is... Another Teen Movie...  :P
not that one... the other one... the jock student na may "letter" (ya know, ones who have varsity jackets) na nagbi-bleed yung kamay... na napansin ni jessalyn and pinipilit pumunta sa school nurse... turns out he had a gun and he held her hostage in the classroom mismo. i think si nicky katt yung nag negotiate para pakawalan niya si jessalyn. he was brownish blonde dun... pero sa "not another teen movie"... dark na hair nya.  ::)
i will be eagerly awaiting season 3's debut on star world... so i can check her out! (don't worry ... pareho lang tayong naghihintay, muunahan ba naman kita? eh we both subscribe to two cable providers right?) ;)
i was up real early monday morning (mga 7.30am) and caught the gala of the portugese edition of "operacao triunfo". funny... kasi it's like the exact clone of the spanish edition... even the rooms looked the same.
the rules tho... were still the same as OT1 and OT2. and not the "revised" rules like OT3. season 2 pa lang sila... and they just voted out their 2nd student. (16 lang dito as opposed to 17 sa spain.)
mahirap pala sundan ang portugese... they spell words almost like they do in spanish pero ibang-iba ang bigkas.
natuwa lang ako ...kasi for a change, yung headmistress ang umiyak DURING the gala as she was making the choice kung sino ise-save ng teachers! you won't catch nina sheeding tears...he he he....  ;)
destiny has it at channel 84 (be warned it's a little "snowy"). the official website (http://operacaotriunfo.clix.pt/). you also see the schedule here (http://programas.rtp.pt/EPG/epg-dia.php?canal=5&ac=d&sem=e). (p.s. we are 2 hours behind sydney time.)
nominated for eviction this week are petra and rita...  ;D
What's the rule on OT, Spiff? If you were the one saved from the bottom two, you're automatically under probation again for the following week? I didn't understand why Delilah-boy was automatically not in the top 10 again.
=====
On the other competition, Anke won!  :)
Good news is that she, Posoletso and Jacques were ALL given recording contracts by BMG Records. Wala ka pa ring kilalang pupunta ng South Africa?  :P
the thing that bothers me is that nagiging popularity contest ang OT. whereas before yung judges ang pipili ng 4 for possible nomination for eviction (ngayon 5 na! based on "favorito" votes)... now... even if you survive, you still need to be saved by either your fellow students, your teachers or the judges kahit na marami kang votes for "favorito"... it's was usually a rare occurence na mano-nominate ka ng sunod-sunod!
grabe! i so feel for jorge! kawawa naman sya. (kadiri boses ni fede! kung saang saang direksyon pumupunta! tapos boyzIImen na kanta pa napunta sa kaniya...) of the five who were for possible nomination: nuria (saved by the judges) sonia (saved by the students), divinia (saved by the teachers), josé and jorge... i though only josé was deserving to be there... mas deserving pa si ramon (na no. 2 sa "favorito"! ugh!) na ma-nominate. oh well...ganiyan talaga!  :-\
did you see the "world music awards special"?... geez! nanalo si david bisbal (runner-up sa OT1) for "favorite latin artist - male"... wow! not bad for a ricky martin wannabe! (who incidentally was nominated in the same category) ::)
************************
horay! go anke! i'm happy for posoletso! (both first-timer sila and look how far they got!...) ... happy na rin kay jacques... kahit na i have no idea kung magaling siya talaga kumanta.
wala pa eh... meron sana akong friend na in-invite mag-"talk" sa isang arts festival... pero next year pa and parang ayaw nya pumunta. sayang!  :(
Gee, this thread has prompted me to finally wake up from my long pinoydvd dormancy!
Anyway, I've really been hooked by OT. It brings me back to the glory days of Saturday Entertainment!  :)  Ang galing pa ng timing that I was in the middle of Spanish lessons when the season started. Nakaka-inspire tuloy mag-aral at mag-practice. Espanol es facil!  :) Weirdly though, nobody at Instituto Cervantes here, or at Espanglish.com, seems to watch OT. Tsaka ko na siguro papanuorin yung OT Portugal, baka malito lang ako at bumagsak sa Level 2. And my bedtime is screwed up enough as it is because of OT Espana.
I don't get the Ramon-love either. Maybe the Spanish just like him because he's "exotic", coming from the Canary Islands and all. Otherwise, nothing special.
Vicente, I can see the appeal. Actually, the first time I saw him on the show, I pegged him na for a winner. The guy, despite having acne scars, being a bit skinny, and looking a lot like a blonder, older version of Tom Taus, just has this certain charisma. Nice, deep voice as well.
I am so annoyed by Mario naman, he's like a singing, drum-playing, non-buffed-up version of Carlos Agassi crossed with Michael Jackson. Ew. And he's much too enthusiastic about everything.
I don't like Fede either, I'm so turned off by how he always bears his arms to show off his muscles. Get some sleeves, man! And he's much too pushy about people listening to his compositions.
I like Nuria, she has bountiful "assets" :), and some actual real talent. Did any of you pay attention to the bordering-on-inappropriate steamy girl-on-girl action she had with Headmistress Nina?  :)
I also like Davinia, despite her heft, you can still see that she's very pretty. Her inner beauty somehow manages to shine through her subcutaneous fat.  :)
I like Miguel too, and I'm puzzled why he hasn't been ranking higher. Maybe because he isn't quirky or interesting enough. Hmmm... I guess that makes him boring.
I don't think she should win but I hope Sonia sticks around for a while. She's interesting. And the way last week's La Academia eps were edited, it was quite a surprise how most of the students voted to save her this week! I was worried that she might have alienated some of the other concursantes by complaining about the noise last week.
wow! a fellow fanOTico! hey jude! (no pun inteded!)  :P
yes! believer ako sa talent and "talent" ni nuria.... i am rooting for her so bad! (just like i rooted last season for ainhoa (http://www.muchoainhoa.com)!) i am also very "smitten" with divinia! i think she's very pretty. mario reminds me of last year's joan tena (albeit not as skinny!)! sonia's a fighter and i think her fellow consursantes appreciate that... super awa talaga ako kay jorge... i hope he can sustain his luck and vote off josé. josé's kinda boring.
i can understand the spanish fascination with ramon and vicente (yup! deep nga voice pero i think that limits his range as a singer.) ... last year ang pinagnanasahan naman ng mga española ay si manuel carrasco (also from the islas de canaria) and miguel nandez... but for some reason... like din nila ang mga payat... hence, toni santos won as "favorito" a record number of times. yuuuuuckeeee!
BTW, my cousin (who's now in madrid!) has a magazine ("hola!" ata...) that covered last year's finals (aka gala 14). i am beginning to wonder kung dinala nya sa madrid... if i get the chance to get my hands on it... i'll scan it for this page.
sayang! i should've sounded off my OT-madness noon pa (although, i think i posted that i listened to their CDs sa Music and Radio thread before ako nag-post dito.)... mas interesting kasi OT2... a lot of hooking-up occured (especially interesting was the closeness between danni and marey! uuuuuuy!) and mas ma-drama... (it wasn't uncommon for people who hooked-up to be nominated in the same week. it happened TWICE!)   :-\
it's so refreshing to finally "talk" to people who know about my fanOTicism.... he he he...  ;D
yup! pero naglalabas din sila ng "grandes exitos" after the season is already done... meron din ballads compilation, christmas album, valentine album, "especial para eurovison" and stuff like that... merchandising-wise i think gestmusic (the show's producer) has already covered its bases. (p.s. quidam... i think they also sell personalized t-shirts like the ones worn by the concursantes on the show...you know, the ones with names on them  :P) there's even an instructional kit to help you prepare for the auditions! kulang na lang nila sa dvd department... just ONE dvd... tapos road movie pa!
oh let's not forget that each disc is an "enhancedCD" so that you can peek into the weeks events and even play some games... ;D
BTW, did you know that last year a gala was actually CANCELLED?? ... it was because the steel stairway leading to the entertainment room COLLAPSED and sent something like 4 or 5 concursantes to the hospital... luckily, gestmusic had some pull and nagkaroon na lang ng "especial en directo" where artists like mariah carey and bon jovi performed. thankfully everyone recovered. it was a little funny lang kasi by next week you'd see the injured concursantes practicing and performing with casts and neck braces!  :-X
grabe 'no? even the walls look alike... unless you look really carefully dun mo lang makikita na iba ang lay-out ng building... the gala set here is more similar to the season 2 set. blue kasi ang dominant color nun sa operacion triunfo 2.  :o
as for the idols newsbit...bwa ha ha ha... (can you say "sore loser")...  ::)
i wasn't able to catch the gala ng operaca triunfo kanina... who got evicted? petra? ma-check nga mamya. ur right tho... mas bilib talaga ako sa teachers sa OT espana... i mean, the students are finally beginning to sound a bit like pros. comparing their performances in gala 0 and gala 2... ibang-iba na. (big improvement especially on leticia.)  ;D
Have they started Daylight Savings Time in Europe already? I set my VCR to record at the usual time and I noticed that both La Academia and the Gala started an hour later than before. Good thing I set it to record for 4 hours so I was able to watch up to the point where we were left with the two nominadas. Missed all the crying though.
Now I'm really beginning to resent the ranking system. It's really just a popularity contest now. It's obvious that when voting for their favoritos the Spanish public aren't really going with talent or performace quality but more with their weird notions of "cuteness" and charisma. And it's heavily skewed in favor of the guys. For example, Sonia, Miriam, and Nuria all did a much better job with their performances than Beatriz or Ramon, but just because they lacked a certain "mass appeal" (for lack of a better word) they got pushed to the bottom 5.
It's a good thing that the complex three-tier saving system somehow still manages to keep the truly deserving students from getting easily discarded.
On a positive note though, they are wising up a bit to Ramon's lack of promise since this week his no.2 position has been usurped by the much more deserving Miguel (who has also regularly displayed welcome bursts of personality for the past week). The ugly and annoying Mario has also been slipping in the ranks.
How ironic that Sonia was complaining about always having to perform in a threesome. And now next week she gets to perform all by herself as a nominada!
Watched a bit of Operacao, and I wasn't very impressed with the contestants' vocal talents (or lack thereof). I guess I'll tune after a few weeks once the herd has been thinned a bit already. I think in the -cao stage, the grid-like structure where the background dancers gyrate in sillhouette is much closer to the sliding round thing than in the -cion stage.
yes... nag-umpisa na nga DST... that's why i remember na 5 am yung gala (as i mentioned in a previous post... 5 am ang galas.) i dunno why... but i recorded this morning's gala in it's entirety (even tho i was awake the whole time!)... including the "la academia" after the gala... if ya wanna see it i can probably tape it for ya... (if i can find the time. been pretty busy lately.) only regret is i wasn't able to record the 3.30 la academia. andun pa naman as a guest co-host si... ainhoa! (last year's winner! my! she's lost a LOT of weight!) it was entertaining watching the two ainhoas sharing the hosting duties!
see! that's what i've been saying all along! the "new" ranking system stinks... dati kasi... only the choice of the week's "favorito" depended on viewer votes... the weeding out of the "en peligros" and the "continuar" belonged solely on the judges. the danger of using a ranking system based on viewer votes is that THE SAME PEOPLE KEEP ENDING UP IN THE LAST 5 SLOTS! grabe! i was so thankful the profesores picked jorge to save... the guy needs a break! bring back the old rules!
i agree... bea's performance sucked big time... she just didn't have any heart in her performance. borja was very dependent on his "impish" good looks! kadiri yung production number nila! ugh!
ha ha ha! i agree with what happened to sonia.... that truly is a hilarious dose of irony!
jorge is such a sport... "do ya think i'm sexy?"?? come on! that's one sick sense of humor giving that song to a guy of his... ahem, "heft".
nuria just shines... i just wish she'd skip crying in a gala or two... she's shed tears in every gala aired so far!
personally... i think miguel is the most talented of the guys! he has a terrific voice alright but i just think he needs more a tad more depth in his performances.
Operacao Triunfo... destiny has it at channel 84 (be warned it's a little "snowy").
RTP is now crystal clear.  :)
Oh, did you know that they actually replay the weekly Operacao Triunfo Gala on Saturdays at 11PM? I just chanced upon  it by accident tonight. Some of the flashbacks are edited down, but the performances are intact. A very nice time to catch it if you don't have a Saturday night gimmick.  :-\  ;D
Edited To Add: With the Global Destiny channel reassignment, RTP is now on Channel 49, while TVE is now on Channel 46.
Oh, is that was that was? I thought maybe they were just really really bad at lip syncing. ;)
This week's cao gala was hilarious. I have never seen anything so cheesy - the guy who got saved sang a "Thank you, I'll miss you, I love you" song to the guy who got voted off immediately after the decision was announced??? Then to top it off, the guy voted off sang his farewell song: Not only was it "Shake Your Bon Bon", it was also very out of tune, proving how much he really deserved to be voted off!
This is the funniest reality show of all time!  ;D
i am absolutely obssessed with Australian Idol! i've watched the whole series from the very beginning and it's part of my weekly ritual. at first i couldn't understand why people in the states would bother watching these Bagong Kampeon-ish shows but after going through Aussie Idol, I HAVE REACHED ENLIGHTENMENT. it's riveting! it's heartbreaking! it's entertaining! i even heard that there's gonna be a "World Idol" competition where all the Idols get to compete (hmm... i dunno if kelly clarkson will agree to do this since she's alreadya top 40 star). but yes, i -- along with the whole of australia -- am a true blue Idol fanatic!
Yeah, the "Ultimate Idol" competition. All I've heard is talk, though. I know it was supposed to be in December, but that seems too close for there not to be any official press releases yet.
sungit, who the heck is "Dicko"???  ;D
====
Operacao Triunfo is now my official bad-tv-show-I-love.
I didn't think they could top last week's hilarity, but they definitely worked overtime to do so. I mean, 2 girls singing "New York, New York" with sexy dancers spreading their legs open/close on chairs... A tall fat girl and a short thin guy with long hair singing "Nothing Compares To You" as a love duet... Two guys doing the ultimate male duet: Madonna's "Like A Virgin"...
...And 90% of the songs are performed off-key!
I honestly don't know who gets voted off, since I'm usually just laughing my head off.  ;D
okay peeps. aussie idol 101:
Dicko is the "bad cop" judge. he's a big BMG executive here and is very brash when it's his turn to give his opinions. i like him though because he really makes sense. but man... his comments are hilarious!
Marcia is the "paula abdul" judge of aussie idol -- black, american-australian who doesn't really say a bad thing about anyone (unless the performance was really bad. she cries a lot too. as you may have probably all have guessed, she's everyone's soft spot.
Mark is a pretty boy judge. sometimes he makes sense, sometimes you think he's on something because he just makes up his own words.
the comp here is winding down. the final's airing live on the 19th and i'm rooting for GUY! he's such a talent talaga. amazing voice. ;D
They booted out Sonia! Stupid spanish chicas. Today's gala was the most emotional yet, with almost everyone in tears from the goodbye song to the despedida back at the academy. Just before Sonia left, Nuria even sang "You've Got A Friend" unprompted, causing even more crying. You should have seen it. Got me all choked up myself.
For next week they're choosing between Nuria and Jorge. If Nuria goes!... Grrr!
For the good news, the currently much-slimmer and much-prettier Beatriz has toppled Vicente from the top position. The smarmy Ramon continues to slide down the rankings and Mario slips to the bottom 5 (only to be saved by the profesores, drats!)!
Things are getting mas interesting though as the obvioulsy unpopular students get checked out and it's getting harder to pick who ought to be saved.
oo nga... i'm hoping nuria gets to stay... i've been sort of rooting for the underdogs eh... (leticia, nuria, jorge and sonia... but now wala na si sonia!) :)
mwa ha ha ha ha ha... go bea! (i never would've thought that bea would unseat vicente from the "el favorito" spot.)
sayang tho... i mean, ramon was finally showing some signs of improvement... but inma was right... he's tenure in the academia is far too dependent on his being muy caliente... (he actually sounded good during the song with the "eurojuniors"...
BTW, what time sa sabado yung eurojuniors gala and finals? i didn't catch the time eh... sayang din... baka maganda eh.  ;)
oh yeah... jude mas emotional yung pag-alis ni josé! lahat umiyak! even the teachers! and nina had to be sort of rude... cause the "goodbyes" were taking forever to finish.  ;) (although nuria singing "you've got a friend" was a really nice touch... *sniff!*)
Title: Performance Reality Shows: World Idol on Christmas Day!
Post by: Mr. Hankey on Nov 15, 2003 at 02:39 AM
So it is set for this December, after all:
International 'Idols' to Compete on Fox
"American Idol" Kelly Clarkson (news) will get the chance to measure herself against her international counterparts.
In "World Idol," a two-part special airing the evenings of Christmas and New Year's Day, Clarkson will compete in London with winners from 10 other countries, including Lebanon, South Africa and Poland.
An international panel of judges, made up of one representative from each country, will comment on the performances. Then viewers from around the world will have the chance to vote.
Details on the voting process will be released later, according to the Fox network, home of "American Idol."
The competitors are all winners of the first season of the "Idol" series in their respective countries — making second-season U.S. winner Ruben Studdard ineligible, the network said Wednesday.
The program will air 8-10 p.m. EST on Dec. 25, and 9-10 p.m. EST on Jan. 1.
The "World Idol" participants, besides Clarkson, are Will Young (news), United Kingdom; Heinz Winckler (news), South Africa; Alicja Janosz, Poland; Jamai Loman, Netherlands; Alexander Klaws, Germany; Kurt Nilsen, Norway; Diana Karazon, Lebanon; Peter Evrard, Belgium, and Ryan Malcolm, Canada; and an Australian contestant who will be selected Nov. 19.
While "Idol" winners get record contracts in the national contests, a Fox spokeswoman said she was unaware of a prize for the international champion.
Shows patterned after the original series, Britain's "Pop Idol," now are seen in more than 20 countries.
"American Idol" proved a major ratings hit for Fox. The premiere date for the third season of the U.S. show has yet to be announced.
=====
I know who sungit and Quidam will be rooting for, but since Anke isn't eligible, then Spiff and I will have to share our choice...  ;D
I wonder if a World Academy competition can be far behind. Or is that already what they do at Eurobest, Spiff?
"have you ever been LOoOoOoOow?"
hay nakoh! hands down! KELLY ALL THE WAY! (asan si sarah? he he he... bakit di sya kasali?)
yup. naunahan na sila ng mga "academy" incarnations... eurobest was exactly that... same style of judging as well (the headmasters of each "academy" or their proxies)...  and ALL  contestants were forced to use ENGLISH songs (para fair....) and wasn't limited to solo acts... may duets and rock group (boy band yung sa russia).
mas malawak ang scope ng "idols" though... it crosses continents... yung "acedemy" sa europe lang. (although if "akademi fantasi" is a franchise... they are branching out na rin pala.)
spain's chenoa won eurobest this year (it was a tight race between her rendition of "it's raining men" and france's noelle... who i think sang a celine dion song.)... lemar finished 5th or 6th ata (i think he sang u2's "with or without you")... who knows who'll win next year...
a bit of controversy tho... manuel carrasco (OT2 2nd placer) was supposed to compete sa eurobest since the OT2 winner needed to undergo surgery to remove nodules from her throat ASAP (as requested by emilio estefan, her producer). pero last minute... pinalitan to chenoa (OT1 4th placer) ... reasons for the switch still elude me to this day.
well Aussie Idol finally ended yesterday. i had a bunch of friends over and we were all cringing at the cheesiness of the show... but still i got kilig for the contestants because they got to sing inside the sydney opera house -- a dream come true for every performer i'm sure (though for the song number with all the top 12 finalists, i think some of them were milking it too much. too OA).
anyway, GUY SEBASTIAN won! thank god! he is so amazing... one of my friends was saying before the announcement of the winner "If Shannon (the other guy) wins, i'll have no respect for australia." good thing the public used their heads and voted for talent over good looks.
Who knows? Baka by Christmas, ibalik na ng Destiny ang MNET dun sa mga "Reserved Channels" nila...  ::)
On the OT shows, sad to see fat guy finally get voted off last week. It must hurt even more that every week, everyone seems to be crying when they bid farewell to someone, but when you're voted off, only two people cry.
Nice to see Gloria Estefan on the show. But shouldn't she have sung her group song BEFORE they voted off Jorge, so he wouldn't have had to come back, like, 30 seconds after he drove off in his FIAT?
On the hilarious Operacao this week, there was one really funny number: As one of the potential evictees sang "I'm Like A Bird," her backup dancers... you guessed it - were dressed AS BIG WHITE BIRDS, doing bird-like movements during the verses and wildly flapping their wings during the refrain.
Television doesn't get any better than that. ;D
But I will say this: at least the cion people can all actually sing. I don't think there's a single person on cao who can.  ::)
maybe i'm just too bias coz i liked her from the start (but yeah... she's the "emotional one"... she even admits it.  ::)) but i was just sooooo impressed with nuria's performance with luis fosi!!! grabe!!! i felt the hairs in my body stand on end... the camera work was pretty spot on... last time that happened was when ainhoa sang "sobrevivere" the first time! wow!
BTW, was so sleepy... i didn't catch kung saang animated film galing yung kanta... i saw clips of the cartoon flashing sa background... i didn't tape the show kaya i can't review it... anyone?
as for feelings.... that's europeans for ya... :P
I finally got my DVD of Fame Academy 2003. Nice to actually watch this type of show and get to understand everything the teachers/judges are saying.  ;D
They changed the voting system this year, and I'm not sure it's for the better. You don't get any time to try to build yourself up if you're in the bottom three. From the way the disc plays, it's like the audience votes for their favorites, then from the bottom 3 on that same night, the judges save one, then the contestants choose who to ultimately save. There's no "probation" period. That gets rid of a lot of the psychological tension for the players in danger of being voted off, making the show not as much fun as it was the first time around.
The vocal performances from this year's contestants are top-notch. I was happy with the winner, but wasn't particularly rooting for anyone.
But I still think it's pretty sucky that instead of doing the weekly performance show at a large studio, they do it in the tiny revamped hall of the Academy itself. Makes you wonder how badly the budget was slashed for the second season that they had to resort to such.
No spoilers since I know several of you on this thread will get to see the disc really soon.  ;)
Nothing funny to report on Operacao Triunfo this week. Just something good!
They came up with A TWIST:
Much like the current installment of Survivor, this week, all of the contestants previously voted off had a chance to perform again with a chance of being saved - one would be brought back into the Academy by audience vote. Of course, to accomodate all of these performers, it was an all-duet night. It's a good thing that the one who got voted back in wasn't one of those who were radically out-of-tune.
Very interesting twist. Hopefully the other franchises can do something like this, since you do get great performers who "accidentally" get voted off (like AI's Tamyra Gray).
Unfortunately for Andre, after being voted back in, he's also one of the two on probation this week.
oh yeah... i saw the aussie idol in a "tabloid"-esque mag in (of all places) mercury drugstore... he went bald daw after winning... apparently he has HUGE hair pala (really wild!!). from his appearance... i wonder if he's part aborigine...  ;)
i think it's only proper... isn't he the only judge that appears on TWO franchises of the show: pop idol and americal idol?
recently read in interview with him on billboard.com and he mentions that the contestants in american idol sing a lot better than the contestants in the UK. (on that, we agree...  ;D) i wonder if this is any indication on how he'll be judging during the "world idol."
You're welcome. I'm actually hoping this is the start of Star World bringing the franchise to the Asian audience, seeing how AI 3 begins in January. But I think that's just wishful thinking.  ;D
I remember reading about what his potential problem was when he was still a contestant on the show. A record producer said it'd be hard to market Justin successfully if he won, due to his mixed ethnicity - can't market him as black, can't market him as white. No main target audience. I guess that guy was right
Sadly, it's not the first time a runner-up on one of these shows was dropped by a record label due to poor sales. I guess you really need to win...
Think Nuria will survive the axe this week? I think she gave a save-worthy performance.
you may be right about the problem with justin guarini... but honestly, is that really an issue? i mean look at justin timberlake... he's so white but he still was able to capture a black audience... (thanks to collaborations with other multi-racial acts like the neptunes and black eyes peas.)
i think guarini's album was simply trying too hard... it seems to lack the kind of pop sensibilities that oozed out of kelly's album (it also doesn't hurt to have clive davis as your producer). ;D
i hope nuria stays... i am seriously rooting for that girl.  ;)
Sorry, spiff.  :-\
 ;)
Hey, what happened? Why was the voting like that, with points per judge shown? Finals na ba next week? How many people get into the finals, anyway? I'm used to the Fame Academy system, where there are only three contestants left for The Finals.
What did the host say to Beatriz? Would she be given a free chance to join again next year, if there's an Operacion Triunfo 4?
Sorry.. a lot of questions. Language barrier...  ;D
i know... i feel sorry for nuria... but i have to admit noelia did put out a great performance... nasapawan yung aretha franklin ni nuria. i'll be the first to admit na tama yung desisyon.
yup. that's exactly what he said... sayang kasi last year several contestants were injured din naman... pero they were allowed to continue... yun nga lang it was more than one... kawawa naman si bea... (isa lang kasi sya and the producers probably though this was a blessing kasi now they can shorten the no. of episodes since, as i mentioned earlier... the ratings are not as good this year... pati daw yung gala CDs bagsak ang sales). i'm not sure about her diagnosis, pero i think she has a fracture somewhere.
there are six finalists... so whoever is left after next week are the finalists na. in the final gala... they will be ranked according to their performances and the top three will be the ones to sing the 6 (or 9) songs nominated to represent spain in the eurovision... winning the contest (i.e. being first place) does not guarantee you'll go to the eurovision song contest.
the top three (ramon, davinia and miguel) in the last gala are assured of a spot in the finals... also assured are laeticia who was saved by the teachers and vicente, who was saved by the concursantes (W-H-Y?!!)... no one was saved by the judge since their votes became part of the computation for ranking. (dati naman ganun talaga... 4 lang ang en peligros... as you saw in operacao triunfo)
hey! wasn't it great when kelly clarkson visited the academy?! (forgot to mention this last last week pa!)  it was a short visit... but she sang! wow!  ;D
p.s. is it just me or is ramon putting out some pretty good performances lately... he's really come out of his shell and finally found his VOICE! merong boses pala ang mokong! it started about two galas ago. there's more to this guy pala than meets the eye (or ear, for that matter!)  ::)
if it were up to me... i'd rather see noelia go to the finals... pero thingS are shaping up that OT espana might have it's first GANADOR! ... and not a GANADORA!
 :'( Awww... Wala na si Nuria! I've been a bit busy kasi the past few weeks (ironically, because of spanish homework and preparing for my "gala" at the Instituto Cervantes Xmas party) which is why I've been watching OT on a one-week tape delay basis. I missed taping this weeks ep pa because my sis unplugged the VCR again even if I stuck a "Don't Touch!" post-it on it.
Sayang talaga si Nuria! Ang galing pa naman niya during the jamming session and the duet with Luis Fonsi! Oh well, she still does seem to have a bright future as a performer ahead of her.
Spiff, no it's not just you. Gumagaling nga ata talaga si Ramon. He somehow even managed to upstage Mario, Mr. Enthusiasm himself! Kaso, mas lalong sumasama ugali niya.
Vicente's vocal quality has been in decline naman. I think it's because of his heavy smoking, made even more heavier I gather from the stress. He really should've started following the profesores' advice and stopped with the fuma. Unless he plans to sing like Joe Cocker in the future.
Noelia's cute, and sings okay. But why didn't she lose any weight during all these weeks at the academy? Poor Bea, she's probabaly gonna put the poundage back on while convalescing.
you're so right! ako rin i was so impressed when nuria sang with luis fonsi LIVE! wow! i caught luis' performance in the miss world competition and he didn't shine as much there as when he did during the OT gala... (am hoping nuria had something to do with that.)
also... i have been noticing that while jorge, leticia, bea and even davinia (just a little bit) have lost some weight during their stay in la academia... si noelia naman parang lumalaki... i seem to remember na wala syang double chin when she started...
with nuria gone... i am now rooting for miguel... seriously, i think the guy CAN sing! next is davinia or leticia then ramon... yeah yeah! i admit... ramon is impressing me a lot lately ... there's more to this guy pala than just being (as one judge put it:) 'muy caliente'! he he he. vicente is just plain "boring" (for me at least.)... he's so....erm,  flat. great baritone... but he better quit smoking cause his looks ain't gonna make him endearing forever.
HEY JUDE! ano kanta mo sa gala dyan sa instituto? mag-a-ala nuria ka rin ba? he he he... if i were given a chance to learn to sing en espanol ... gusto ko matutunan "mienteme" by david bisbal and elena gadel... or maybe zucherro's "baila morena" or perhaps "siete vidas" para maikli ... have you seen this bisbal guy perform... grabe! galeng showmanship! (and the voice ain't too bad either.)
ang taka ko... if bea decides to come back... will she still have to audition??
Luis appeared to really enjoy performing with Nuria.  :) Diba he handpicked her? I kinda blame the stylists for Nuria's exit. They should've played down her figure more. Less gifted spanish girls seemed to be voting against her out of spite.
Yeah, Noelia did get bulkier. Saying that she didn't seem to lose any weight was just a more diplomatic way of putting it.
I'm sort of gunning for Miguel now too. Although he's a rather puny second choice after Nuria. He seems like a nice guy. Jovial, nice relationship with his parents. Davinia is cute, but a teeny bit lacking in X factor. Leticia is looking a bit long in the tooth.
I'm not gonna sing sa Instituto, just playing my cello. Tried looking for spanish pieces pero they all looked too difficult, baroque kasi. I'm just doing Vivaldi's Spring, a zippy etude by Schroeder, Gruber's Silent Night, and if I can get it right in time (and against my teacher's advice), Bach's Prelude to Suite #1 for Solo Cello. I sorta considered doing a sing-and-play number. But I'm not that kapalmuks. Napilitan nga lang ako in the first place. But if I were to sing in Spanish I'd like to do Cinerama's "Dura, Rapida, Y Hermosa" and/or Mikel Erentxun's "Esta Luz Nunca Se Apagara".  :)
I doubt that you'll like spanish if you took it up in college because very academic daw ang approach. You might even be one of those people saying how unfortunate you were at naabutan ka pa ng spanish in college, hehehe.
I find the classes very enjoyable at instituto since conversational ang approach and there's hardly any pressure. Pero like learning any new language marami raming memorization......damn those irregular verbs!  ;D lol
I'm now starting to get bits and pieces of those diego torres songs. ;D
or worse, yung nagsasalita may lazy "esses", and they pronounce c's and s's as "th"! (aaaugh!)
Don't forget the regional differences when it comes to pronounciation as well.
Actually, its only the latin american countries that pronounce C and Z as "esses". The two letters are pronounced as "TH" in spain when followed by the letters e or i. Kaya napabili tuloy ako ng Alejandro Sanz for the pronounciation of certain words, lol ;D
American Idol: Christmas Songs
December 17, 8:00PM/11:30PM, on Star World
Spiff, did they show this last Wednesday? My SkyCable was down all night Wednesday-Thursday morning, so I don't know if this aired. Funny, though, that I never saw a single on-air station plug for this show.
Also... do the finals for Operacion Triunfo air during the show's usual schedule?
Title: Re:Performance Reality Shows: Operacion Triunfo, Fame Academy, Idols
Post by: SPaCeMaN SPiFF on Dec 19, 2003 at 03:17 AM
nope. it didn't air. instead they showed a britney spears special called "in the zone"... i was so disappointed.  :'(
to be fair tho... even GUIDE listed na ito (and not that britney special) yung dapat ipapalabas.  ::)
nope... i heard ainhoa (the daily show hostess) mention that the finals will be on the 21st... 9.45 PM their time. that means the final gala will be shown at 4.45 AM monday (not the usual tuesday) Manila Time. i could be wrong about my time conversion tho.
finals na rin ang operacao triunfo right? who got into the finals? the chubby girl?
BTW,  OT watchers... keep on watching at the regular schedule even tho the finals is done... the academia will continue to air as the three top placers will stay at the academia to prepare for the eurovision gala... unless of course the rules have changed again... :-\
I'm glad I asked! I didn't understand what they were saying, so I would've missed the finals completely.
I'm not sure if it's the finals already for Operacao, since the last episode was just like any other, with two people in the hot seat for possible voting off next week. But that would be strange, since that would mean the remaining contestants would have to spend Christmas at the Academy?
The fat girl is still in, though. But I think it's going to be an easy victory in the finals, since maybe 80% of the time, the same guy is in the #1 position each week. When he's not, he's still nominated in the top 3.
If it actually is the last gala, then both shows will be airing grand finals at the same time?
Thank God for multiple VCRs.  ;)
well... it's finally over... can't say i was shocked by the results... this has to be the most disappointing win i have ever witnessed in the show's three-year run. personally, i was rooting for miguel... but would've been perfectly alright if ramon won (after all, he did seem to have improved the most.) ramon's win was also the most emotional... even ice-queen nina shed a tear. IMO, the ganador totally does NOT deserve his first place finish. but then in the end... this isn't about talent. just popularity.
here's how the three ganadores fared in the votes:
vicente = 25.07%
ramon = 24.33%
miguel = 16.39%
if all those who voted for leticia, divinia and mario vote for either miguel or ramon in the gala eurovision... vicente won't be going to the EV song contest. bwa ha ha ha! ... oops.. excuse me. sorry bout that... ::)
(http://www.portalmix.com/triunfo/jornada/img/0312/031221_f11.jpg)
most eye-popping number has to be leticia's... it was certainly... erm, different? (is she one of the "chicas malas"?)
(http://www.portalmix.com/triunfo/jornada/img/0312/031221_f18.jpg)
i feel so sorry for divinia... she is still a winner in my heart... that girl absolutely glows!
(http://www.portalmix.com/triunfo/jornada/img/0312/031221_f15g.jpg)
i finally found out why mario suddenly looks much better... after watching is montage i suddenly realized INAYOS PALA KILAY NYA! he he he... if you watched, you'll know what i mean.
(http://www.portalmix.com/triunfo/jornada/img/0312/031221_f5g.jpg)
grabe! super emotional si marrieta (on the left) 'no? iyak sya ng iyak... i think it was quite obvious that nina was disappointed in the no. 3 result. it was so nice to see angel again. and ainhoa! wow! what a change!
p.s. in case anyone is wondering... yes, david bisbal and chenoa are an "item"... same with hugo and nika (kaya nga pareho silang late... he he he) i feel so sorry for mai... someone needs to recognize her talent...  :'(
p.s. vicente... you really need to quit the fuma... in case you need some inspiration to quit, i have two words for ya: "jeremy irons". ::)
There's maybe at least one similar number every week at Operacao. Seriously!
It was an interesting finale. It would've been twice as much fun if I knew who the guests were, but they're all strangers to me - and they ALL have their own CD releases!  ::)
Not understanding much throughout the entire run show, I wasn't really rooting for anyone. But the winner clearly has the most limited range of all the contestants. I think he can only sing Spanish ballads and nothing else. I don't see a career for him as a pop or rock star. Maybe country-western.  ;D
The winner is really based on popularity and not talent on these shows. This was most obvious with Fame Academy, where the 2nd-4th placers were all clearly better performers than the winner.
But being the winner doesn't necesarily mean you'll have the more successful career, anyway. Just ask Gareth Gates and Clay Aiken.  :)
On to watch my Operacao tape. From what I understand (if I read the web site right), this week's show was just a Christmas special, and the remaining students get some sort of Christmas break before resuming again.
So you were saying... Operacion will continue with the three top placers? Even the weekly gala? Or just daily shows?
Title: Re:Performance Reality Shows: Operacion Triunfo, Fame Academy, Idols
Post by: SPaCeMaN SPiFF on Dec 23, 2003 at 10:23 PM
yup... it should continue to air... the daily show that is... i think they'll get a break from the galas since mukhang wala nang "gala ganadores". instead... we'll be treated to their rehearsals of the eurovision song entry nominees... two or three original songs will be given to each ganador... and from those, the viewers will chose which they like best and that will be spain's official entry to the ESC.
in the previous years kasi... it was DURING the gala ganadores that the prizes were given (one from endesa and another from vale music.) also discussed during gala ganadores is what vale music has in store for the upcoming albums... (don't worry, i have last year's on tape so you can see for yourself... as soon as i can dub it, i'll give ya a copy...as well as the eurovision prelims and the eurovision final of last year.) dun din sa gala ganadores dapat sana yung mga duetos ng mga finalistas. pero since ginawa na yun last time... mukhang wala na nga.
would you be interested to see the guests perform... they all performed nung the GENERACION OT gala (which i also have on tape)... magugulat kas a stage presence ni david bisbal!
i have to admit... i shed a small tear when i saw ainhoa's winning moment during last week's final... even now as i recall it... it sends shivers down my spine! just hearing rosa's voice call her name was so emotional for me... (hate kasi sya ni nina and the other judges that time so they always tried to find ways to get rid of her... she was called nga the "eternal nominada" by HOLA! magazine! but she showed em all! i was rooting for her since about gala 6!)
Hmm, I don't think I can make the effort to watch daily shows. Can you please keep me posted if there are any bigger ones to look out for, like actual performances or maybe the public vote day?
BTW, if you have a free VCR, the Christmas Special of Operacao (rerun on December 24th, 10:40PM Manila time - if I computed right) was very nice. It opens with hostess Catarina Furtado doing a sexy "Santa Baby" dance number. Then all the remaining students sing classical theater song duets - with the professors! Next up: the top 7 of OT1 come out - each does an English Christmas song duet with one of the top 7 OT2 students. After that, all the losers come out, from both editions of the show. They're also paired up OT1-OT2 for a traditional Portuguese Christmas carol. And at the end, Catarina announces that the remaining contestants will be allowed to go home for the holidays. They literally jump for joy at this unexpected (?) Christmas break.
Thoughout the show, there's only one number flashing - not to vote for contestants, but to call to pledge a Christmas donation for special children.
Very heartwarming. Perfect for Christmas viewing.
yes quite nice... i will remember to watch that...it looks like operacao is once again emulating operacion's last season... in OT2 españa... the christmas special was entitled "la fuerza de la vida"... it was for the benefit of Queen Sofia's charity to help children from thirld world countries... members of OT1, throughout the show, reported from the different benificiary countries like India, Uganda and Ethiopia. It showed them interacting with the kids! meanwhile, in the studio, the concursantes sang duets with each other, the profesores and special guests like diego torres. (hi quidam! dito nanggaling yung OT version ng "color esperanza"!) the season hadn't ended then... i think asa gala 8 or 9 pa lang. so the evicted used this time to interact with those still in the academia.
also to commemorate the event, the double album (also called "a fuerza de la vida") released for this event was launched... by the gala before new years... the CD is awarded as the highest selling CD in spain... beating out Madonna's die another day...   :P (if you want i can give ya a copy.)
of course... i'll let ya know when the eurovision gala will happen... for sure naman it will take place eh.  ;D
Actually, they also had the special children on the show - each had one of the OT1 alumni as a "Big Brother". And there's also a CD of the show.
Creepy parallels, huh?
i know... veeeerrry creepy! i think the current operacao2  is like operacion2's twin! (although they didn't have any kids on the show. just footages of the OT1 alums visiting the charity's beneficiaries)
i wouldn't be shocked if operacao3 mimics the recently concluded operacion.  :-X
since World Idol will be held on christmas day, i thought i should post this who's who of world idol article that i found. (haven't seen it posted on this thread yet)
The who's who of World Idol
December 22, 2003
Will American Idol Kelly Clarkson romp to victory? What about Belgium's rogue metaller, or our very own Guy Sebastian? Peter Robinson weighs up the form.
Heinz Winckler - South Africa
The South African series boasted alleged voting syndicates, a presenter who was admitted into drug rehab halfway through the series and a last-minute rejig to the format to avoid an all-white finale. Still, enough of the boring stuff - let's talk about dogs. Heinz has a 14-year-old Maltese, with whom he recently stayed at the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Oudekraal, the only five-star hotel in South Africa that allows pets in bedrooms.
Diana Karazon- Pan-Arabic Region
"I feel success in every moment," says Diana, who won SuperStar in August following a gruelling 21-week search. "Especially when I stare at my mother's face." Upon winning, Diana said nothing, but dedicated her performance to the people of Lebanon, the people of Jordan, His Majesty King Abdullah, the Arab nation as a whole and the children of Palestine. Which makes a change from "my stylist". Fortunately, the final, in which Jordanian Karazon and Syrian Rowaida Attiyeh battled it out, managed not to cause any serious political "issues". The power of music, eh?
Kurt Nilsen - Norway
Kurt thrashed runner-up Gaute Ormsen, who has since been described as "the Norwegian Justin Timberlake". Both Nilsen and Ormsen recorded the song eventually released by the winner - She's So High, a cover of a song that scraped into the UK Top 30 in 1999. Back then it had been performed by the son of Randy "You know, as in Turner Overdrive" Bachman, and it is just as wonderful today.
Peter Evrard - Belgium
This Andrew WK lookalike performed Nirvana's Lithium during the Idol heats. After debuting what would be his first single on grand final night, he said: "I'd never have chosen that single, but it could have been a lot worse." Of his wardrobe, he adds: "I always wear black because it's easy to combine. I don't have to ask myself whether this colour goes with that colour." Peter's debut album is called Rhubarb.
Ryan Malcolm - Canada
Back home in Ontario, Ryan - whose all-engulfing fame led him to open the Hamilton 2003 World Cycling Festival - and two other members of the Malcolm clan enjoyed minor success as a covers band. Their ace-sounding A Bit of Nostalgia - Requestfully Yours is available now at http://www.abitofnostalgia.com.
Alexander Klaws - Germany
Some 62 per cent of German 14- to 49-year-olds watched the grand final, in which housewives' choice Alexander overcame flu and romped to victory. A shame he ever recovered, really. His most recent single was from a German gladiator film. In Free Like the Wind he sings: "He fights hard, will he reach his aim? He'll survive for his friends, he is like a crying wolf tonight. He is the winner in the end." Well, that's ruined the film for the rest of us, hasn't it?
Kelly Clarkson - US
Clarkson's stepfather calls her Mariah Kelly, because it sounds a bit like Mariah Carey, who is a singer, like Kelly. The hours must just fly by in Dallas. Upon winning, the ex-cocktail waitress filmed From Justin to Kelly, a summer holiday romp with runner-up Justin Guarini that made S Club's Seeing Double look like Citizen Kane.
Jamai Loman - Netherlands
Jamai has an interesting selection of spectacle frames and has lent his tones to songs such as Always on My Mind, Love is all Around and Everything I Do (I Do for You). Frankly, there is no way on Earth this man will win World Idol.
Will Young - UK
Will's mature new direction is reflected perfectly by his new album sleeve, in which the world's first Pop Idol is pictured jumping off a dry stone wall. Will came out as gay shortly after winning Pop Idol, but while you'd find Fred Durst more likely to discuss the ins and outs of life as a homosexual, Will did go out and buy Kylie's Slow the morning it was released.
Alicja Janosz - Poland
Since winning Idol, Alicja has decided she wants to be called Alex. Fair enough. A massive-selling debut album is already out of the way and she's tipped to represent Poland in next year's Eurovision Song Contest with I'm Still Alive, a song whose title seems to epitomise the struggle all Pop Idols face when it comes to their second album. Alex/icja puts her success down to God-given talent, hard work and luck. "I don't know anything more than this," she concludes.
Guy Sebastian - Australia
Guy, who calms himself down before a performance by entering what he terms "Grooveland", is the newest Idol of the lot. A committed Christian, Guy found maintaining his virginity during Australian Idol "freaking hard".
see this page for pics: http://www.worldidol.tv/contestants.asp
The Official site (http://www.worldidol.tv/ ) also has the voting scheme up. Apparently it will be like the Eurovision contest. Each country cannot vote for their own contestant (it's automatically ranked no. 1)  but their votes for other countires will be tallied and then ranked. The final ranking will have corresponding points and the one with the most points wins. Well at least that's how i understand it.
filmed From Justin to Kelly, a summer holiday romp with runner-up Justin Guarini that made S Club's Seeing Double look like Citizen Kane.
Hahaha! That's gotta be one of the best descriptions of that movie that i've heard of. Both films kinda suck..... seeing double will make you feel empty and worthless after seeing it. Unlike with From justin to kelly, you still end up feeling empty and worthless pero at least you'll be humming a couple of tunes from the movie after. ;D
BTW, if you have a free VCR, the Christmas Special of Operacao (rerun on December 24th, 10:40PM Manila time - if I computed right) was very nice.
Whoops, I computed wrong - it's December 25th at 10:40PM.
Hope you didn't wait for it, Spiff.  ;D
does anyone with a VCR still have MNET?
I wanna watch world idol. I think kelly clarkson is going to win but i'm sorta roting for peter evrard too (from belgium i think) managed to listen to a couple of his singles and he sounds like kurt cobain/eddie vedder. I'd ather he win than the usual boy band belters.
Spiff, I was just checking out the World Idol web site, and it turns out that this year's Idols was the most watched series in the history of South African television.
We have good taste.  ;D
I didn't know each country except the US had its own host for World Idol. It must've been weird to tape that.
I hope I get to see this soon.
hopefully we will if everything goes as planned.  ;)
Anyway, was reading up and one of the idol sites had the  list of the diff hosts.
UK: ant and Dec
Canada: Ben Mulroney
USA: Ryan Seacrest
Australia: Andrew G.
Each broadcast is edited slightly differently with the respective hosts presenting local segments and doing the segues from performance to judge commentary. Also was able to see clips of the judge comments from the different broadcasts and they chose to edit which comments to show based on the country it was being boradcasted in. the only constant was simon cowell who was in every one of them.  ::)
The judges are evil! my fave comment was "You have the voice of an angel but you look like a hobbit. If we were looking for middle-earth idol, you'de be the hands down winner". Mwa ha ha.
I have a feeling kelly might not be such a lock for winning after all. The backlash might hurt her and Guy Sebastian's (aus) ) performance was generally well praised by the judges. Most of the criticism of him was for his odd looks rather than his talent.
But Seacrest's not on the list at the official site: World Idol Hosts (http://www.worldidol.tv/thehosts.asp?section=thehosts). Maybe he came in at the last minute, since he thought it might conflict with his new duties as host of American Top 40?
Poor Casey Kasem.  ;D
OK just finished watching world idol. Here's a list of the songs they sang:
Will: 'Light My Fire' ,Kelly: 'You Make Me Feel Like A , Natural Woman' Ryan: 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother', Guy: 'What A Wonderful World',Alex (Klaws): 'Maniac', Alex (Alicja Janosz): 'I Don't Know How to Love Him' ,Heinz: 'Don't Wanna Miss A Thing' ,Kurt: 'Hunting High and Low' , Jamai: 'Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word' ,Peter: 'Lithium' ,Diana: 'Ensani Ma Binsak'
I must say that i wouldn't be disappointed if Kelly Clarkson lost to Guy Sebastian. He may not look like a pop idol but his voice more than makes up for it i think. I don'tknow which one of them I want to root for. THey both should win.  ;D
Kelly Clarkson though is the most polished of all of them. I like her hat. Even if she doesn't win, She's already the biggest star of all of the world idol contestants and guy could use the exposure to the world stage.
I don't like will young. He's performance was boring and he's got a whiny voice. pang boy band (http://www.alternativenation.net/forums/images/smilies/general/zzz.gif) I wouldn't like it if he wins. Of course since i watched the UK feed, the hosts and the judge's comments that were shown were a bit biased so i hated it even more when they were praising him.  ::)
Alex from poland has a great set of pipes but needs to learn how to control it i think. She's a bit hyper too.
Canadian Idol turned out to be like Survivor Pearl islands. Thye brought back the outcasts to compete again and one of them (Ryan Malcolm) ended up winning. I don't think he's all that. Kulang ng charisma.
They also showed clips from how the particular idol got to world idol before they sanf and from the little i heard, i think the guy that heinz the south african dude beat is better than he is and he only won because he looks good.
I still like Peter Evrard from Belgium. He's different. He's not pop, he's rock (even his looks are) and i'm really surprised he's in a POP idol contest. He won't win this but if he started a band, i'd buy his album. (http://www.alternativenation.net/forums/images/smilies/hevymeta.gif) Rock rules!
Norway's Kurt is a great singer (and has a bit of a rock edge to him as well) but again does not have the look of a pop idol. I'm glad he beat the two pretty boys in his country's idol contest. I like him. He sounds like BONO from U2.  ;D He's Middle Earth Idol!
The judges were funny trying to outdo each other but the Canadian judge is coming off like an ass. He's not like Simon who adds humor to his criticism. Canadian judge sound like he's griping all the time and looking for every small thing to complain about.
In conclusion....(he he  parang term paper)
I really cannot decide between Kelly and Guy. Nothing but a tie would be justified.  Kelly will most probably win of course but her performance and that of Guy's were equally the best for me out of all the contestants. This means that second place for me would have to be Kurt. So if i had to rank them:
Kelly = Guy
Kurt
Peter
Alex
Ryan
Will
Jamai
Diana
Heinz
Alexander
EDITED TO ADD:
was rewatching the show and I found it disturbingly hilarious when flames came out during will's performance. And not only because of the 'flames'. But also because of the timing. "Come on baby light my fire" PFFFFFFFFFFF "..come on baby light my fire" PFFFFFFwoooFFFFFFF "..try to set the night on fire" PFFFFFFFT. incredibly ironic too because he wouldn't be able to light a match with that performance.
and i think ketchup guy from south africa is gayer than a cowboy in a cher concert.
My thoughts on World Idol:
sungit's right, Australia's Guy Sebastian is a really great singer. But although vocally I place him at par with Kelly Clarkson, as the judges pointed out, this is not a radio show, and Kelly has the more appealing package.
Kurt Nilsen has the same problem as Guy, only multiplied to the nth power. Dicko the Australian judge was right - Kurt does look like a Hobbit. So maybe the current Return of the King fever will work in his favor.  ;D
I don't think anyone else is even in the running.
The Polish Idol judge was just a complete dick. And not in a Dicko way. Just nasty comments which are prepared soundbites - no justification for them at all.
I'm glad the other judges an even some contestants told him just how idiotic he was.  8)
to be fair... ALL of the contestant can carry a tune... (yes... even heinz!) here's my thoughts about the show (in no particular order):
alex (poland): during her "road to world idol" segment... i heard her sing anastacia's "one day in your life".. a song that would've been perfect for her voice. her energy woul've been just right for an uptempo song! i think the whole JCS-thing did NOT work to showcase her talent.
alex (germany): he was entirely wrong for "maniac" (what in bloody hell was he thinking??!!!)
guy (australia): yup sungit! i agree... this guy definitely has IT! in fact, in my book, he beats kelly for stage presence and charisma... but to be honest, i think he does have a limited vocal range (dun naman sya talo ni kelly.. :)). and yet inspite of this, he uses his voice well. i think if he chose a more contemporary song (perhaps from luther or maybe even boyzIImen) he might have fared better. (his vocal stylings remind me of shawn from boyzIImen).
heinz (africa): i didn't know josh charles was in this contest!? ;) (a pretty face that can carry a tune...nothing more. but then again, i've seen less talented singers than this guy sell millions of albums... just look at ricky martin. he he he. and HE has a grammy.)
peter (belguim): despite what everybody says... talagang pang-rock ang boses nya ...  and that's not necessarily a bad thing, but pete and simon are right... this is NOT the right place for him... :-\ (to be honest, one reason i think the finished in such a high position is because he stood up to the judges. this guy has B-A-L-L-S!! )
kelly (USA): definitely NOT at her best during this contest... i was a bit disappointed at her performance... she honestly didn't need to be in this contest, but i think she was a real sport about it. i think her consistent placing in the top 5 at each country who voted is a testament to her "universal appeal". and yes! she DOES shout on tone...but she gets away with it.
ryan (canada): this is my first time to hear this guy sing... and i have to say... he did improve a lot based on the audition tape. this guy will have a future in the industry... i think he just needs to a new image and new stylist.
will (UK): ok... i've never been a fan but i'll admit that he sings a decent tune. but beside vocal giants like guy and kelly (and maybe even ryan)... he just seems to fade into the background. i think the fact that people all around the world know who he is also helped him earn that spot on the top.
diana (pan-arabic): two words: celine dion... when celine recorded her first english-language album "unison", she hardly spoke a word of english (she had to learn to sing english phonetically for that one)... and look at her now... i think this girl has an amazing voice... if she wants to make it in the international music scene, she can... she just needs to learn to sing in english (or maybe even french... "merci").
jamai (holland): he's not really that talented... but at least hindi lumilihis boses nya. but with the right image and the right gimmick... who knows?
kurt (norway): what the best thing kurt did for this contest ... HE CHOSE THE RIGHT SONG! u2 songs have such a universal appeal! and "beautiful day" is so full of energy! it was a PERFECT song to end the night! voice-wise... he's VERY good (although i personally would not put him in guy or kelly's league), but like jamai he needs to work on how he's packaged. i think singing last also helped him a lot.
 ;)
I hadn't seen that. Her face gave her away, but I still feel really bad for Kurt, since he was such a big Kelly fan. That was just rude of her.
You know, I think a major factor in his winning were Simon's comments on how ugly he was. You really felt for him, and he was the last person who performed, so those hurtful comments would linger in a viewer's mind immediately after the show. If I were voting, right then and there, I would've given him my sympathy vote, too.
BTW, so sorry to hear that david (of fame academy) is putting an end to his singing/career. sayang! at least he'll still be writing (p.s. yes, i finished it tonight! it was so nice to see cat deely again. haven't seen her since her MTV europe days. hee hee! T.Y. ;D)
Nah, I also just set my timer and went back to sleep. Long day at work today. I think they were talking about some Gala Ganadores thing at the end of the show... did you catch when it would be?
So, what did you think of FA? Good performers? Did your bet win?  ;D
Do you prefer FA's voting system to that of OT? It gets a bit confusing, seeing how these shows are all similar, yet have slightly different methods of elimination. But giving the students the final choice of who to save seems more Survivor-like. You can conspire get rid of the biggest threat if you want.  8)
i was actually rooting for marli or ainslee at the beginning. pero i think david deserved it naman (although i'd be perfectly happy even if sinead took home the contract... in fact basta hwag lang si lemar!) david and sinead improved the most out of all the contestants...  ;D
the show is definitely not as BIG BUDGETED as Operacion Triunfo or Star Academy. it's low-key galas reminds me of OT mexico... but i like their set. it's nice, personal and cozy. ;D what i don't get is... bakit sila sila ang nagba-backup for each other? dapat hindi sila nagtipid duon and hired professionals for that. i mean they are being "bred" as solo stars... not backup singers. (ditch the male co-host and hire some dancers people!)
it's weird na yung "academy" is a mansion instead of an actual building. but it's refreshing naman. it's so.... Xavier School for Gifted Children!  :P
my biggest wonder is BAHKET nakapasok si malachie! he's so UNTALENTED!!! his voice even comes from his nose instead of his throat! BAD CHOICE! BAAAAAAAAD!
i liked the rest tho... lemar's voice reminds me of seal (but much, much weaker!). ainslee reminds me of travis frontman francis healy. (david is john hanna's long lost son and sinead is elizabeth macgovern's blonder sister!)  poor katie! she's the UK's answer to an "eternal nominada".
as for the rules... it's basically the same... the only difference is... when it comes down to the last two... the OT people are given another week to redeem themselves with a "dazzling performance"... sa fame academy wala nun... and because of that... mas preferred ko yun sa OT. (but your right tho... mas survivor like ang dating. pero i think the decision of who get's to stay should lie on the viewers and not each other. :))
congratulations to davinia who won the bonus 4th prize in this morning's gala 13.
davinia & miguel singing feelings
(awwww! don't they look nice?! sinagot na kaya siya ni davinia? ;))
oh yeah... as a twist to this year's competition... the 4th placer (divinia, in this case) will also have a chance to represent spain the ESC. the first eurovision gala is set on the 14th in spain (15th naman sa atin). and for a change, anyone can submit songs for consideration as spain's entry in the ESC. unlike in previous years when only established songwriters can submit entries.  :)
So were most of the people I know who've seen this show. You have good taste.  ;D
Wait... you've actually seen Star Academy and OT Mexico? What channels are those on cable? Patapos na Operacao... I need a new weird foreign language show to watch.  8)
Anyway, if you think that's low budgeted, wait until you see FA2. They no longer have a venue for the weekly performance shows. They do them in that tiny hall they're always talking/singing in. The judges are on the stairs, and the place is fully packed with friends and relatives. No room for general audiences even! It's strange.
Quote
what i don't get is... bakit sila sila ang nagba-backup for each other?
I didn't even notice that on the show, but it became obvious to me when I saw the concert. It was sort of weird, specially when compared with the Pop Idol concert which had tons of dancers.
Quote
poor katie! she's the UK's answer to an "eternal nominada".
What's nice about Katie is between the show and the concert tour, she actually went from cute teen to hot babe! It was shocking to see her look that different.
It looks like Lemar has the most successful career. I always see his name on the British music charts. David's "retired" and Sinead, like Justin Guarini, was dropped by her label.
Last I heard, though, there will be no Fame Academy 3. The BBC has a new musical/reality show, where they will make a pop band and a rock band face-off. The UK's Pop Idol 3, though, will allegedly be more like OT/FA, with Big Brother-like daily footage.
i just finished watching the "american idol christmas" special... and i have 2 things to say: "where's justin?" and "kawawa naman si ruben".
So were most of the people I know who've seen this show. You have good taste.  ;D
thank you very much ;D... i thought these two showed a LOT of promise! sayang lang si marli kasi she looked crushed when she got evicted... si ainslee naman is quite a talented chap, only problem is i think he's a bit too much of a free spirit to even be part of the POP MILL. lamar is undoubtedly good... but he didn't need the "academy" to become a better singer. i think he was just using this show to launch a singing career.
Quote
Wait... you've actually seen Star Academy and OT Mexico? What channels are those on cable? Patapos na Operacao... I need a new weird foreign language show to watch.  8)
i saw bits and pieces of star academy and it's winner nolwenn when they aired the "eurobest special" on TVE... syempre panay palabas nila noon kasi spain won. ;) i saw OT mexico and it's very husky voiced ganadora: darina when OT espana had it's gala ganadores last last year. (i even saw bits of OT italia and FAMA brazil!).
ah... so they might be following OT's footsteps... interesting... ::)
p.s. in case you are wondering how many franchises of OPERACION TRIUNFO/STAR ACADEMY there are, you can see it here (http://www.portalmix.com/triunfo/ot_enelmundo.shtml).
officially speaking... i think star academy started earlier, followed by operacion triunfo in a span of less than two months. it's a little shady on who exactly is a franchise of whom... but my guess is they hatched the ideas together... kasi if you watch the credits after galas... mostly spanish names ang nasa "realizacion".  :P
i just finished watching the "american idol christmas" special... "where's justin?"
I had the same question, considering he's featured on the jacket of the American Idol Christmas CD, and after being dropped by his label, I don't think he's very busy these days.  ::)
Operacao Triunfo had its Grand Finals today. Strange, they didn't have a winner, they had THREE, read in random order. I couldn't make out what they were saying for sure, but I think there will be a special show next week, maybe to choose the Eurovision representative from the three.
Of course, it wouldn't be Operacao without the funny production numbers. One finalist sang Sexual Healing on a bed... with a dozen beautiful bedmates.  ;D
The winners were:
(http://images.clix.pt/canais/operacaotriunfo2/biografia/francisco/foto150x400.jpg)(http://images.clix.pt/canais/operacaotriunfo2/biografia/goncalo/foto150x400.jpg)(http://images.clix.pt/canais/operacaotriunfo2/biografia/sofia/foto150x400.jpg)
Francisco, Gonçalo and Sofia
I still can't figure out if they were actually judged for singing ability.  ::)
LOL.  ;D
BTW, a quick reminder... tonight (or tomorrow morning) is the first "operacion eurovision"... (looks like TVE is not airing the dailies anymore... i haven't caught any. ) breaking tradition of 3 contestants... OT espana will be having 4 finalists tonight: vicente, ramon, miguel and davinia. each with 3 songs a piece. then it will be narrowed down by the jurados to two songs a piece. from the last 8 songs... people at home will vote for their choice. (unless the rules have changed again! sigh!) it starts at 5AM manila time. set those timers!!!  ;)
here are the individual "temas" for each contestant:
Vicente: "Se me va la vida", Veinte años más" and " Nadie como tú"
Ramón: "Para llenarme de ti", Todo vuelve a importar" and "Cuestión de alma"
Miguel: "Amor de madrugada", "Muéveme" and "Hoy te quiero más"
Davinia: "Mi obsesión", "Quiero tu amor" and "Cómo quieres que te quiera"
ha ha ha! olé!  ;)
i guess this just means their debut album budget are all set on equal footing... which isn't at all bad. hmmm... this is will portugal's first time to use an OT winner for the ESC. this should be interesting... yung france kasi... they don't send the winners to the contest eh.  :(
Grr... due to the Destiny channel line-up shuffle, RTP has vanished again, so I don't know who won the right to represent Portugal in Eurovision.
I hope RTP comes back... Destiny, can you hear me?
i'm a little bit confused.... tonight we were supposed to find out who and which song will represent spain in the eurovision contest... but a local TVE program advisory has announced that the actual decision will occur january 28 and not 21 as earlier anticipated. (even their website hasn't been updated! walang gala scheduled for the 28th!)
in any case, the gala will definitely push thru tonight, but there are speculations that instead of a finals, the 8 songs will be trimmed down to a final 4. weeeeird! i guess we'll just find out tonight kung sino nagsasabi ng totoo.
it is confirmed tho, that beth (last years representative) will be part of the final jury. :)
don't foget my fellow "fanOTicos" that the gala starts at 4.50 AM manila time... time to set those timers.  ;D
a lot of viewers feel that the decision last week was rigged... because the crowd-favorite song: mi obsession was eliminated by the jorados. this led to the massive "boo"-ing during the show! kawawa naman si davinia.
he he he... have you guys read this? looks like there is life for cat deely after fame academy... she's being considered  to host this new show (which will replace the old "Song for Europe") called "making up your mind" (yes! from that old bucks fizz song that won ESC '81!) which will be tasked to choose britain's 2004 rep for the ESC this year. read more about it here (http://media.guardian.co.uk/broadcast/story/0,7493,1114231,00.html).
