Yeah, and he would read a fortune cookie at the end of his show. I remember a particular epispode where he visited our country, specifically Villa Escudero.

Armida Siguion Reyna did a celebrity cooking show once before on channel 2.

Jamie Oliver is cool. :) The guy has an irreverent attitude around the kitchen -- which I can relate to as I love to cook gung-ho style.  ;D

Agree on your assessment of James Barber. I once saw an episode where he was simmering veggies and not noticing that the RED cap of the tabasco sauce he used found its way into the mix. It was such a knee-slapper.  ;D

Another fave of mine is Biba's Kitchen. Too bad Discovery Channel stopped showing that superb cooking show.

Another time ,while chopping, he left the stove on for some period and then started to wonder why it was getting a little too hot. ;D "No wonder it was getting hot in here..." And then he shut it off.  ;D

my favorite cooking show, hands down is that show they show on discovery channel or bbc, it's this fat italian guy with curly hair, who's kinda gay.  all he talks about is italian food.  and it looks terribly yummy.  he eats so much, you can here him heaving.  antonio scorluccio or something like that.  italian food is da bomb.

Well, Tyler Florence (Food 911) has this show called Tyler's Ultimate, and he picks a dish--omelet, apple pie, seafood soup, goes to where this dish was invented, watches how it's made, goes somewhere else where a variation is made, then goes back to New York where he does his "ultimate" version.

I usually ignore his version and download the recipe for the classic version.  Got the recipe for classic French omelet, apple tartin, bouillabaise (sp?).  Mm boy, them good.

Then there's Mario Batali's Mario Eats Italy, where Mario goes up and down Italy and shows us the best eats.  That show is dangerous to watch--I usually end up raiding the fridge after.

Good Eats has some useful tips, and besides, it's funny. It once showed the original recipe for Ceasar's salad (you don't use anchovie, you use Worcestershire, and you eat it with your hands), and better, shows us the historical and chemical basis for some of the dishes made.

Gordon Eliot's fun.  HIs latest show is Follow That Food, where he traces some dish or ingredient from its origins to around the world.

Tony Boudain's show is fun.  I'd like to have his job.

Rachel Ray--eh, too perky.  NIgella Lawson's more my idea of a woman.

I miss Keith Floyd in BBC.  Now that was one mad chef.

That's her alright. The good thing about Biba's show is that she demystifies Italian cooking. She shows just how easy it is to cook authentic Italian dishes.  My mom, who hates anything non-Filipino, even watched religiously and learned a lot of good techniques -- heck, I've learned a lot of good techniques from her!  ;D

When I was still working for Skycable, the first lifestyle channel used to air this cooking show starring this grandmotherly woman with white hair and she specializes in complicated scandinavian and european dishes. I still remember her cooking coq a vin the traditional way. YUMMY! Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the show or the chef.

Mario Batali's show is just amazing. It's a travelogue and a cooking show rolled into one. My only frustration is that you can't really copy most of the dishes he serves here in RP because his ingredients are either hard-to-find or too darn expensive.

I never really liked Bourdain, I think the guy's too arrogant.   Keith Floyd, on the other hand, is one cool dude.  :)

Oh, and Ming Tsai's East Meets West deserves special mention.  ;D

i remember watching her in awe (clueless ast what she was saying) as she cooked these nice yummy-looking dishes in like 5 minutes flat!  ;D

my friends and i used to make fun of how she uses only ONE dishcloth per show to dry her hands, clean the countertop, dry the pan, dry the veggies, etc., etc. (not very sanitary is she?)  ;)

Yikes! Hopefully not. But knowing how sloppy some chinese restaurants are, I wouldn't be surprised. I remember my fil-chi friend's story about this chinese restaurant she wants to be bring me to in Carriedo. She said the food is out-of-this-world delicious -- just ignore the servers who would carry your dishes to the table with their thumb dipped into the food.

By the way, a friend of mine saw an episode of Nigella Lawson's cooking show. According to him the show's production values are quite high. He even mentioned that the frame rate they used was akin to using film.

cool! at 24 frames per second (film rate)... i actually noticed that too when i saw a short clip of her show while she guested on oprah. it's like watching a documentary because she sometimes explains the recipes via voice-over. and she does it all in her REAL kitchen (kaya sometimes her kids would suddenly pop in)  ;)

One of the earlier cooking shows aired by the Lifestyle Network was "Entertaining at Home with Dean Fearing". Quite a dandy, that Dean. Then the old i channel had this Italian grandpa type Pasquale who came across as a the Italian equivalent of the wacky Stephen Yan.

One of my workmates had this to say about the Urban Peasant: "Ang baboy magluto!" That had me in stitches.

These days, I go for Mario Batali's "Ciao, America", Rachael Ray, Nigella Lawson (divine indeed) and Tyler Florence. I wish they'd air new episodes of "Good Eats".

Several shows have already copied this style; in some USA message boards, among the shows deemed as copycats of Nigella's shows include "Barefoot Contessa", "Everyday Italian", and "Mario Batali's Ciao America". Btw, I can't stand those 3 shows, biased ako kasi I love Nigella hehe...

IRON CHEF rocks!!!

Dig Chaiman Kaga's dramatic flourish and his Liberace-like wardrobe, the cool and composed Iron Chef French Hiroyuki Sakai, the harassed-looking but teddy-bear-like Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi, and the incredibly astig Iron Chef Japanese Rokusaburo Michiba (even the way his name is pronounced, astig din). Haven't seen Iron Chef Italian Kobe in action yet. And the commentary is hilarious especially when the actress gal Mayumo Takata (did I get that right?) is in the panel.

Kylie Kwong's cooking show in Discovery Travel and Leisure is my new fave. Kwong's asian fusion cuisine is scrumptious -- and easy to make too because most ingredients can actually be sourced locally.

Starting January one, Discovery Travel and Leisure will morph into Discovery Travel and Living -- this means more cooking shows!! They've already shown a sneak peek on Nigella's show.  :)

when i first caught it... i thought it was some spooky reality show (i didn't recognize him at first... he looked so young!) because he was chatting with the lady producer (who was off cam) and he was talking about his pregnant sister and other stuff while he was preparing the dish (custard, i think...).  ;)

The Lifestyle Network recently aired the Christmas edition of Nigella Bites, titled Nigella's Christmas Bites. It was great--one hour of pure Nigella goodness. It was nice to see her summery kitchen get some kind of holiday flavor--bright red mixers, blenders, and some Christmas tree cookie cutters hanging on hooks.  8)

Not really a cooking show but a "culinary" show -- Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. This one hour docu-type show follows chef Gordon Ramsay as he tries to turn around a restaurant that is on the brink of closing down. The show is fast paced, very interesting and Ramsay is always a delight to watch. The man is my idol!

And speaking of Ramsay, his other show, Hell's Kitchen is my favorite reality show ever. It's a good thing Solar has begun airing the first season locally. The heavily edited version is not as fun to watch though. Ramsay's potty mouth should never ever be edited.

One irritating thing about local cooking shows is that they're mostly dominated by one sponsor, so you always get distracting product logos, nonstop commercials and hosts that are contractually obligated to keep mentioning the sponsor's name while they're cooking, which you rarely ever see on foreign cooking shows.

I find Emeril Lagasse EXTREMELY irritating. I have no idea how this idea got to be so freakin' popular. He's not funny and he makes irritating humming noises when he cooks.

As for my favorite cooking shows, I enjoy Giada de Laurentiis and Nigella Lawson (they're so freakin' hot!). On the male side, I like Bobby Flay and Mario Batali. I enjoy watching Iron Chef (both U.S. and Japan) and Alton Brown's Good Eats.

Also irritated with Lagasse. Other chefs I don't like are Bobby Flay (too condescending), Rocco Dispirito (tries to act like a culinary rock star), and that Canadian chef who has two shows in Asian Food Channel -- I think his last name's White.

I find Emeril Lagasse EXTREMELY irritating. I have no idea how this idea got to be so freakin' popular. He's not funny and he makes irritating humming noises when he cooks....

Well I find him funny and credible. Lagasse is known for his light and jovial hosting style as well as several catchphrases, including “BAM!”, “kick it up a notch,” “aw, yeah, babe” and “feel the love,” usually said before or after adding something spicy to a dish, or after the reaction to adding something, respectively. When frying or making dishes like sausage, Lagasse advocates using genuine lard, boasting, “Pork fat rules!” Its all a matter of style. If you still remember WOK with YAN then Yan's "Herrrrrroooo!!!" (which is Hello with Chinese intonation) greeting at the start of every show is the equivalent of Lagasse's funny noises, “Kick it up a notch!” and “BAM!”.  It has become his trademark.

FYI, Emeril Laggase is by no means a push over cook. Upon his high school graduation, Lagasse was offered a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music, but decided to pursue a career as a professional chef. Lagasse polished his skills in Paris and Lyon, France, before returning to the United States, where he spent the next few years working in fine restaurants throughout the Northeast and at Telemark Lodge in Cable, Wisconsin for Tony Wise. He graduated from Johnson and Wales in 1978 and the school later awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Lagasse initially gained fame in the culinary world as executive chef of Commander’s Palace. After leaving Commander’s he opened his first restaurant, Emeril’s, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1990. It was designated “Restaurant of the Year” in Esquire magazine of that year. Lagasse is mainly known for his emphasis on Creole and Cajun cooking styles. Indeed, many of his restaurants, as well as his corporate office, Emeril’s Homebase, are located in New Orleans. Lagasse is the executive chef and proprietor of ten restaurants.

After several appearances on several other FoodTV programs, Lagasse hosted his own show, The Essence of Emeril. “Essence” in the title refers to Emeril’s Essence, the name of a spice blend of his own concoction that he frequently uses in his cooking, and which is commercially available in several flavors. He also often suggested that viewers of his show create their own spice blends that reflect their personal tastes and be unafraid to use them to customize the dishes he would teach. Lagasse has been nominated eight times for a Daytime Emmy Award for his Food Network shows.

We have been watching this guy's show for the past two years and have never found him to be irritating.  Well, to each his own...  ;D

According to what I've heard he refuses some sponsorships even if it's soft-sell because he claims some products have a cheap reputation. Bumblebee hit it right on the head, he tries to be posh and sophisticated. It's not like he's David Pardo de Ayala or Norbert Gandler, or even Margarita Fores. And yet, he endorsed KFC.

Giada's ok but she's too "Hollywood-y" for me (most of the Food Network people are). I still prefer Nigella Lawson, or that hot new cooking mama, Laura Calder (French Food at Home)--nothing beats a woman with an English or French accent that describes food for me.

Ah talaga, yikes! Thanks Indie! I saw him on mall tours endorsing something a few years ago. He's just trying to be over the top.

Kita mo naman agad yung niluluto kung masarap eh. And I believe he's not one of the best we have. But I'm glad we're raising our bars with new and talented chefs in the country. There are a lot of culinary schools training our younger generation to be good chefs and cooks one day. During the 80s and 90s some families will send their children to Switzerland and France just to learn their ways. I think Enderun has an in-house chef from France teaching students here.

There's this lady chef in Q, medyo cutie pie hehe parang nahijack ang Hot or Not thread

Nigella Lawson is here to endorse the Contadina line of tomato products that will be launched by Del Monte. Looks like she's been enjoying lots of Filipino food, from her recent tweets and instagram posts:

Hindi kaya lalong lumaki ang balakang ni Nigella sa mga pagkain natin? Ha ha ha. But seriously I love French Cooking at Home. I hate Jaimie Oliver because he make cooking look so easy when its not.

Payat na si Nigella, starting with her show Nigellissima, and the 3 seasons of The Taste, which she co-produced with Anthony Bourdain. French Cooking at Home ba or French Food at Home with that sexy Laura Calder? Favorite ko din si Laura ... oh, and I also cannot stand Jamie Oliver.

Nagdieta na rin ba si Nigella? I think she loves too much sweets. But for a 56 year old woman she still has one of the prettiest faces in the culinary world.

Medyo OT. Are there short courses availa ble in Manila that are related to cooking? Though I am interested more on meat processing like hungarian sausages/bratwurst and the likes. Thanks

cannot really categorize as my favorite kasi wala ako natyempuhan iba for comparison, but I think okay si Jamie Oliver, his recipes are practical and I find myself mimicking some of the things he does on the his show mostly on how to prepare vegetables, I'm sure marami pa mas magaling but strangely every time I'm on the Food Network, usually time slot nya, hahaha, I gravitate towards practical cooking kaya minsan yun iba ayaw ko na panoorin especially if one or two of the ingredients are not easily accessible locally

my friend who's a sausage maker told me, better mag aral daw muna gumawa ng local longganisa, mas mahirap daw gawin yun local sausages as compared to foreign sausages, pag natuto ka daw gumawa longganisa, it's easier to learn gumawa hungarian sausages etc

Been binge-watching the first 6 seasons of The Great British Bake Off and enjoying it a lot--it's nicely done, with a good mix of diverse contestants, and the co-hosts are hilarious.

You mentioned two words that best describe the kitchen: "cool" and "organized."

True. MC US parang walang kwenta compared sa MC AU. ang gaganda pa ng mga female contestants na sumasali sa MC AU

favorite ko sa last season ng MC AU si Nicole. ang yummy.  ;D
