Title: 2012 Holiday Picks!
Post by: Carlo777 on Oct 06, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Another year, another round of ball breaking wallet crunching expeditions. A number of TVs in front of us and we'll come up with this years holiday picks!

The choices will be made by yours truly and businessman/actor Juan "Johnny" Revilla (who is a TV/Movie freak), his TV collection is one of the most impressive I've seen ;) He posts under the name of mokongR for Hello Pinoy. I better tell him to make his own account right here...

Stand by.

mostly for cable tv viewing lang - mas maganda sana yung may booster for cable tv viewing

toshiba 32inch - basta yung may signal booster for cable
devant 32inch - suggested by shop guy

no need for full hd.  kasi for cable tv lang talaga madalas.  pinaka important is matibay sana.  sana din maganda yung picture quality.

di naman masyado nagmamadali kaya kung meron kang alam na upcoming sale pwede din yun ang hintayin namin.  budget is at below 20k.  kung kaya ng 15k with good quality then better.

thanks

Kung cable TV lang ang main usage, the best for you will be the 32PB200 from Toshiba. It has a cable booster that really improves signal. Tungkol naman sa widescreen mode, you can always switch to 4:3 which is the natural aspect ratio of SD broadcast TV, yun nga lang may black bars ka on the side which is called a pillar effect, but it's not really bad looking.

Toshiba 32PB200 is around 15k lang ata.

Cheers!

Dont believe in Devant guy in the store, theres lots of good Tv manufacturers na abot sa budget na 15k or less.
Go for Toshiba,Sony,LG,Samsung but not for Devant:)
Just my opinon....

I saw that SHARP LED model and it's nice! Pictures are just a bit muted in-terms of colors, and to my knowledege it only has 1 HDMI input.

Good price though...

Please check out the Toshiba 32PB200 it's similarly priced with more HDMI inputs.

2nd for the Toshiba 32 PB200
I have inspected this TV in a few shops and I must say that it stans out amongst the 32'' TV's
Signal booster is a sweet addition and it's LED backlit pati.  8)

Thanks for the suggestion sir! Used to have an old one (AV600 model i think) where reception is quite weak. I'm planning to buy one for Christmas as a gift to my tatay :)

First pick:

Best 720p/HD Ready TV for Movies:

Samsung PS51E450 and PS43E450 Plamsa TV

This is really the first time We're giving this recommendation for Samsung. Since 2007, this area was dominated by Panasonic but 720p Panasonic plasma models have not been head turners. These Samsung plasma TVs have very good blacks, well rendered colors, and fine motion handling (they're also well within budget price category).

If you're into DVD, Blu-ray and don't really want to spend a lot of money on "Large" sets for your home theater then do check these units out!

Best 720p/hd Ready TV for Games (32 inches):

Panasonic 32C30X

Very good pixel and input response time when "Game Mode" is activated, the C30X (LCD) is our recommendation if and when you need a small TV just for your video gaming fix. Image quality is also good for movies considering the price!

Sir,

Saw these model at S&R, PS43E450 Plasma TV side by side with a a LED one same brand and i was quite dissapointed with how it renders the black and over all PQ as compared to the led model.
Was surprised that it was a recommended model.
Worst PQ in all displayed TV.
Unless my eyes played a trick on me, saw a different model or S&R is really pushing their LCD/LED and change the setting to make the plasma looked bad.

We tested this model and found it to be better than most LCDs/LEDs with the same price. During tests we put the TV in a controlled environment (Lighting conditions) to simulate what we tend to use at home.

I remember once we did a contrast on a Samsung 32R8 model vs a Toshiba 32AV500 way back in 2008. The Samsung model (in the showroom) blasted the Toshiba in pq department but when we brought them home it was a totally different story.

LED/LCD with their inherit brilliance tend to outdo their plasma counter parts in a bright light environment. Most tests are done with low lights to none with contrast levels set to bellow or just the mid point based on calibration.

Here are some observations about the TV as well:

Plasmas don't look very impressive in bright lighting because of limited intensity and panel reflectivity. If your home lighting is fairly strong, then Plasma may not be for you. :)

We tested the LG already! So far 2-D performance is quite respectable almost like the Panasonic 32X30 LED, so when it comes to that we can safely recommend it.

We still need to do 3-D tests.

How would you compare this to the Tosh 32PB200? or the Pana 32X30 LED?

I'm going to trade in my brothers 32'' Avision sometime this week and I was set on the Tosh PB200 until you recommended the Pana 32C30.

Thanks

I will still recommend the C30X over the PB200, because the C30 does not have as much "black crush". The Toshiba is not a bad TV, it's actually the better choice, if Cable viewing is all what you have in mind. HD sources though...favor the C30X.

The X30 LED from Panasonic is actually the best (overall for HD/SD use) from the three you have in-mind but it's quite pricey compared to the others and the advantage in picture quality is not miles apart.

hi carlo,

between these 3,which would you recommend:
panasonic 42X30
lg 42CS560
lg43PA4500

used mainly for wii,360 and ps3 gaming maybe 50% of the time, maybe 40% for bluray watching and the rest for cable, mostly hd channels from sky.

the prices are very tempting too, under 25k cash from vic.

your thoughts?thanks. :)

It's sad that the Black/White Level menu setting of older Toshibas is no longer in this model. Tinkering with this used to be enough to eliminate the black crush.

This is why I always set my Ps3 to RGB Limited and Xbox 360 to RGB Standard.
Even the guys at AV forum do because Full RGB crushes blacks.

In the end it does not matter which option you choose after proper calibration.

Most modern TVs (LCD at least) have the option to choose low or full black level. If it does, then best to set the PS3 to full/Xbox 360 to Expanded.

FULL RGB works well if you have a good PC monitor. We have an Asus LCD that does a good job even with FULL RGB:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059

Great input and pixel response time as well. Fantastic for games but I still prefer the YCbCr/YPbPr (limited rgb/super white on) option on the PS3 with an HDTV for movies.

Since we are on the Holiday Picks I'm planning to get an upgrade. What's your pick on a Plasma TV to be used only for Movies/PS3 gaming. I really do not need the SMART features. 3D would be nice but not a requirement. Budget will be 40k which i can probably stretch to 45k.

I don't recommend 720p plasmas this year.

With older plasmas, 720p units were ok at a normal viewing distance of 6 to 10 feet.  Newer 720p plasmas now look bad from a regular viewing distance because they have noticeable vertical pinstripes caused by the pixel structure.  Those pinstripes are most obvious on white areas of the picture.  Also look at text and notice the jagged edges.

Pixel structure of 720p LCDs/LEDs is much better.  Compare with a 720p LCD/LED (almost always 32 inchers) and observe from a closer viewing distance to compensate for the screen size difference.  You'll find that the LCD/LED will give you a much cleaner picture due to the pixel structure difference.

I recommend the 720p Samsung plasmas if you don't mind the vertical pinstripes and if low price is important to you.

After playing around with Juancho's 32C30X, I noticed it doesn't have any HDMI black level setting as well as advanced color calibration options, like the 32PB200. We really had to use RGB Limited on the source to prevent black crush. It seems that nowadays a lot of smaller, cheaper TVs have much fewer settings (other than Samsung, LG and Sony). I guess the option could be buried in the Service Menu, but we prefer not to mess with that.
My old Samsung 32R81bx and current LG LK430 had tons of settings available. The cheap LG even has ISF-certified color adjustment options.

What's funny is that the 46PB200 has much more settings than its smaller brother. Maybe the manufacturers assume that today only stupid people who don't know much about audio/video buy small TVs, so in an effort to avoid support calls or mistakes in calibration, they just removed the options entirely.

@barrister

An unfortunate side effect but if you're out for a 720p plasma and almost always it's because of price then these Sammy's will do just well.

@DonMiguel85

Limited RGB has always been the recommendation for the color space provided by HDTVs. Even my Sharp LED Quatrron and Panasonic V20 plasma experience black crush if the source is set to FULL RGB.

My Asus monitor though, can receive the FULL RGB signal.

Yes, I too have a Sammy 32R81BX, one of my first LCD. During 2007 and 2008, even 32 inchers were premium sets now it looks more like most 32inches are really set to be "bare bone".

I remember getting the R8 for nearly 40k back then, the price of a 42 inch full hd plasma now=)

It seems that nowadays a lot of smaller, cheaper TVs have much fewer settings

That's true. Bought a Prestiz LED and my CRT TV has a lot more controls to offer.
Generally satisfied with the standard PQ settings though, my reason why I got this TV plus the price.

It can play movies thru USB sir, I already tried. It features a lot of options too for picture calibration.

Congrats, sir. It is a very nice TV for the price. The controls are good enough to fix the out-of-the-box black crush and gamma issues.

One would have to make a picture compromise to battle the famous Toshiba green push, however (this model may have the same video processor as older Toshibas, which were known to suffer from this problem). Skintones could look unnatural in some scenes because of this.

Here's what I think about this model:
Pros: Excellent price to screen estate ratio; Decent image controls; Very good contrast and screen uniformity
Cons: Poor color rendition (green push and color shift); Slow channel change

Thanks sir juanch for the input. yun din ang iniisip ko. ehehe.

aside from the slim bezel, isa ko pang na notice na difference is yung video engine. does the Regza engine differs that much against the power meta brain engine?

nanghihinayang din ako sa aesthetics, parang old model na din kasi ang pb20 vs the slim bezel design pu200! haha..

anyway, kung sa kotse, there's no replacement for displacement, applicable na din siguro sa tv ang there's no replacement for screen size.. ;D

I typically go around in pambahay-wear when shopping for high-ticket items.  Heck, I even bought a car once in cash looking like a guy buying suka at the market.

It's much safer that way, I think.

Besides, if the customer service is bad because you look like "walang pambili" then it's best to move to another vendor who will treat you like a prince even if you look like a pauper. :)

In fact, sa halagang 16k may binebentang 40" tv (MyView brand).

LG 32" LS3450 @15.5k

Kung pang "harabas", I would suggest getting a tv with at least a 2-year warranty and a brand with a service center near your house.

I would recommend the SONY unit...

Maganda ang IQ compared/over to most LED TV units... 2years din ata ang warranty ng sony...

The one thing about Sony is that many of their TVs have a lot of post processing, so they suffer from worse input lag. But it's only a concern if you're a gamer.

sir carlo777,
thanks!!

LG 32LM3410

The TV looks OK and works OK in a demo, but this model has no Audio Out.  That means, if you're watching TV or cable TV, you have no choice but to use the speakers of the TV. Many LCD/LED even plasma TV models have poor sound or tinny sound.  Suppose you're watching a movie on HBO or HBO HD, you have a very nice picture with the sound of an AM radio or that the TV speakers resemble the sound of an empty sardine can.  An Audio Out feature gives you the option to channel the regular TV or cable TV sound to an amplifier or A/V Receiver.  If you have an HTIB, some models have an AUX in, which you can connect, to experience stereo or home theater sound.
