MANILA, Philippines -- The first trailer for the restored high-definition version of the Ishmael Bernal classic "Himala" has been released.

Released online Wednesday via ABS-CBN's official page on video-sharing site YouTube, the first trailer of "Himala" gives an extended look at the 1982 film in restored high-definition quality.

Filipino audiences can now relive the story of Elsa (Nora Aunor), a barrio lass whose visions of the Virgin Mary changes her life and her community, once it hits selected cinemas nationwide on December 5, 2012.

The restored version of "Himala" was first screened at the 2012 Venice International Film Festival in September. But a long history of international recognition for the film preceded the Italian showing.

Notably, it was recognized as a contender for the prestigious Golden Bear Award at the 1983 Berlin International Film Festival. It also won the Bronze Hugo Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival in the same year; and in 2008, was hailed as the Best Asia-Pacific Film Of All Time by the CNN and Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Written by Ricky Lee, "Himala" is the first film to be restored in HD quality by the ABS-CBN Restoration Project, in partnership with Central Digital Lab, Inc.

According to Leo Katigbak, head of ABS-CBN Film Archives, other films that will be restored in HD quality are: Peque Gallaga's “Oro, Plata, Mata”, and a number of Star Cinema films including Olivia Lamasan’s “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and “Madrasta”; Laurice Guillen’s “Tanging Yaman”; Rory Quintos’ “Anak”; Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s “Bagong Buwan”; and Chito Roño’s “Dekada ’70.”

I really hope they consider restoring a lot more. I'd like to see Itim, Kakabakaba ka ba, Kisapmata, and Sister Stella L.

Pasensya na kung biased yung list. :-)

And btw, I hope the restoration is done conscientiously.  I've seen overzalous restorations where the result becomes somewhat artificial in look.  I hope they consult the original filmmakers whenever possible.

I read something online that the Criterion Collection was considering adding MAYNILA to their roster of films but it was rejected due to the quality of the prints. Perhaps they might change their minds after this!

Hey Dan you should not miss the preem on Nov. 28, no more burn out print since its in full hd na! Caught the technical preview this morning at Power Plant Mall Rockwell Cinema 2. Its fantastic, beautiful and marvelous!

Central Digital Lab found the original negatives with the original audio. All the sounds are intact from the original release and the picture quality is truly a sight to behold! Direk PQ was very happy with the restoration effort.

Most audio sa forest or during the MATA section ang nawala plus during the love scene of Cherie Gil & Ronnie Lazaro, there's a background music coming from the long playing record of Manny Ojeda....they even corrected the framing.

Just saw the Himala HD trailer. To be honest, and I don't want to offend anyone, the film looks a million times better than any contemporary Pinoy film I've seen. It was as if it was made only yesterday.

Sorry, I'm just blown away at the possibility that our film heritage has a shot at being saved finally.

I hope not only the pic quality gets restored, but the audio as well.
hoping some if not all Old black n white movies gets digitally restored as well.

I bought an original DVD of Ang Tatay Kong Nanay thinking it was restored clearly, but it's a disappointing purchase.  That stopped me from buying further old Filipino classic films.

Going a bit OT here: Just because local studios can take advantage of Dolby Digital sound in theaters, it doesn't mean they should, without giving it careful thought. We saw the trailer of 24/7 in Love in a digital cinema, and they had the music blaring left and right behind our heads, while the action and dialog was ongoing in front of us on the screen. It was more confusing and annoying than amazing.

Not that I'd ever actually watch that Love, Actually-patterned film.  ;D

Just saw the digitally restored version of "Maalaala Mo Kaya: The Movie" (1994) on TV tonight. And gah, it looks quite pristine compared to the one they used to air at Cinema One. Too bad I can't get over Aiko Melendez' waaaaaay over-the-top acting. (And she seriously won a Best Actress award for this? Damn.)

Anyways, this gives me hope for the future HD releases of ABS-CBN Film Archives. =)

Side note: I read an article today saying that we have had over 8,000 films since the birth of cinema in the country, but only 3,000 of these still exist, of which around 2,500 are housed at the ABS-CBN Film Archives. And we don't even have a national film archive center. Wow.

If only...

We have a de facto one, with ABS CBN. I hear Carlitos preserves his films well, don't know how well. And same with FPJ's estate. ABS CBN is it, for better or worse.

But if they're focusing on stuff like Maalaala Mo Kaya, I don't know

Guys, you can watch the restored version of HIMALA for FREE on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at several SM Cinemas. Just follow the Facebook link below and click the "Free Movie Day" icon. You can choose where and what time you want to watch (1PM, 4PM or 7PM).

And if HIMALA isn't a film you'd like to see, there are other new Pinoy indies you can watch for free instead.

Next (and only other) screening for ORO PLATA MATA at the festival is on December 2, 3PM at Shangrila Cineplex.

Saw it tonight thanks to keating. Still an experience after all these years. Great restoration, but I think the audio of Galleria Cinema 2 is funky. You could barely make out the dialogue during the opening party scene. The background sound was too loud, the voices were soft and tinny. Fortunately once the party ended, audio seemed to be normal.

Heard we finally have an official film archive now, the National Film Archive of the Philippines (NFAP), established late this year. They own the restored version of Manuel Conde's Genghis Khan and are working on Gerry de Leon's film as well. Sounds like great news to me.

These developments are wonderful news; I will go as far as declaring that this rediscovery of Conde's Genghis Khan is the most significant news in the film culture scene since the end of cinema's second golden age in the early 1980s!!
But the announcement made to restore titles such as Maalaala Mo Kaya, Anak, et al as the Archive's next project is, I think, a step in the wrong direction. The films mentioned are good ones (Tanging Yaman is a favourite of mine), to be fair, but they are far from being the classics in the league of Genghis Khan, Himala, and Oro,Plata,Mata. These Star Cinema titles are relatively minor works from their respective directors, and the ones that obviously needs resurrecting and re-introduced to a new generation of film-lovers are these film-makers best works (masterpieces, even): the late Marilou Diaz-Abaya's Brutal and Moral,  Laurice Guillen's Salome and Init sa Magdamag, other works by Peque Gallaga and Ishmael Bernal, plus ouvres by other great directors such as Gerry De Leon, Lamberto Avellana, Manuel Silos, Eddie Romero, Lino Brocka, Mike De Leon, Celso Ad Castillo, the list can go on...

Just got the Himala 2-disc restored, remastered version on DVD. My initial impressions:

- Compared to the previous DVD release, it is an improvement by leaps and bounds.

- Video quality is what's expected of DVD releases (a few notches below Bluray 1080p) at 16:9 anamorphic. Previous release was in 4:3 pillarbox. All scratches and tics are practically gone -- obliterated. You may be put off by the dark image tone for the first 5 minutes but that's just the effect of the "eclipse" in the opening scene. Once things brighten up the image quality is really good. Bright and dark sections are well-defined but contrast is a touch too extreme for my taste.

- Video quality isn't as sharp as I had hoped. It's not blurry, just soft. That's expected when playing a 480p DVD on a 32-inch widescreen LCD. I haven't tried putting it through a player that can upscale it to 1080p but I'm not expecting the quality to improve by much.

- Tagalog subtitles are STILL hard-coded. AAARGH!!! I never got to catch the theatrical release. Talagang may subtitles rin dun? The Japanese(?) subs on the right side from the previous release are gone

- Audio is 2-channel stereo, same as previous DVD release but is much, much cleaner.

- Contains an audio commentary, documentary and other extras on a second disc.

- DVD "case" is a flimsy cardboard fold with foam buttons as disc holders. Keeping the cardboard, transferring the DVDs to a proper DVD case.

Is this the full HD treatment many are hoping for? Until a Bluray release is made, probably not. Something has to be done about those hardcoded subs. If they can't be removed, so be it.

As far as DVD releases go, this is still a must-buy. Video and audio is generally as good as can be for the DVD format. It's an important first step and we should support it. Price is P399. Huwag na kayo bumili ng Avengers. Ito na lang.

Ordered my copy from Astroplus Multiply site and surprisingly, it's already sold out.

The fact that it's sold out is very encouraging, actually. :)

It sucks that the English subtitles are burnt-in.  I've seen its HD trailer in YouTube and there were no subtitles there.  Maybe it's part of their cost-saving efforts (cardboard cover and all)?  This is sad because even the non-restored DVD release of Oro Plata Mata before had optional English subtitles.

Star Cinema should definitely review their marketing approach.  This DVD's main market is film buffs and enthusiasts who expect a certain level of quality and who will be willing to pay extra for a "Criterion-type" quality release.

I also ordered my copy from Astro Plus Multiply.  I still haven't heard from them regarding delivery.

Nice inputs Dan on the restored HIMALA dvd release. I read in some forums that they are complaining on the cardboard packaging.

ORO PLATA MATA restored version will have its theatrical run on the 1st quarter of 2013. The restored dvd will debut on midyear.

Thanks. Can't wait for that as well. I have more time in 2013 so I definitely won't miss this theatrical run this time.

+1.

Just because they did work on it doesn't mean we shouldn't still air out some criticisms regarding this release. Personally, I appreciate the effort but I know that even better could be done and I can't wait for their follow-up (hopefully).

In the meantime, we should continue buying this for the support. It's still a pretty good release. Just don't forget to air your concerns to anyone that can listen. It's an exciting time to be a Filipino film lover.

From the restoration documentary, they stated that the best possible source for Himala that they had to work on was an existing print, so I'm assuming the subtitles were burnt into that print. I really think the burnt-in subtitles on this were beyond their control.

The crappy packaging, though, is a different story.

The existing prints used for the restoration had no subtitles. They were mostly theatrical release prints. The restored version of Himala has new English subtitles. The print shown at Venice had both English and Italian subs...

If that's true, then the hard-coded subtitles make absolutely no sense, since all of ABS-CBN's other titles have On/Off selectable subtitles.

Weird. And pretty stupid on their part.

The restored version on the current DVD still has the old subtitles and didn't use the "new" subtitles you mentioned. I checked and compared with the previous DVD release. They're exactly the same, word for word. Burned in, hardsubbed. No option for any other subs. Someone should be fired.

I'm still more inclined to believe the subtitles were in the prints used for the restoration, since it really makes no sense. Even the appearance of the subtitles is old, straight out of the 1970s - the font, pure white, no black borders on the letters. I haven't seen subtitles that look like that in decades. And as Dan mentioned, they're identical in text and appearance to the old DVD release.

Are you sure of your info, Jojo?

My guess is those were the only workable prints. Our country is a tropical country and we don't have a government-funded film restoration system so film prints get lost quite easily. Most of the workable prints of old Filipino films we have are those that were imported for foreign film festivals in temperate climates so the celluloid were not degraded easily. This also explains why the only workable print of Genghis Kahn was the one with the James Agee English narration.

I saw prints of Himala at Mowelfund and the ABS-CBN Film Archives. There might also be one from the UP Film Center whose entire collection is now housed at the National Film Archive of the Philippines. The master used for the original DVD release and Cinema One showings of Himala was sourced from a beta cam-SP copy, courtesy of CCP, not a print.

The similarity is obvious. I wonder if the restored print was the same one from the previous DVD release, removed the Japanese subs on the right side of the screen and kept the English subtitles. Although I'm quite sure that they had to find some scenes from other prints since most of them were damaged.

I'm not really sure Dan on the original aspect ratio of HIMALA, but I think most Filipino films during the 80's 4:3 ang framing. ORO PLATA MATA was also shot that way....and even on the restored ORO, the framing was hotly debated when I talked to Direk Peque after the technical preview at Powerplant Mall Cinema.

Thanks....give me heads up when you see one in stores.  :)

Got my copy today.  Packaging aside, this has got to be the best released Pinoy DVD to date.  The video is not perfect but it's a huge improvement over the original release.  It's anamorphic widescreen in a dual-layered DVD.  It's matted widescreen though (i.e., the original DVD seems to have more video information at the top and bottom of the screen).  I guess that this is the original theatrical projection of the film.  What shines though is the wealth of special features.  The newly-produced documentary is great.  The technical restoration feature is also very informative and I'm a sucker for this kind of special feature.  There's also a very good interview with Nora and Ricky Lee. The teasers and promotions are OK but are nice additions.  I am currently listening to the audio commentary. A treasure.

BTW it's definite that the print used for restoration has the burnt-in English subtitles. It's the exact subtitles as the original DVD release.
Title: Brocka's "Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag" to be restored
Post by: Verbl Kint on Jan 11, 2013 at 03:52 AM
One of my favorite Filipino films will finally be restored.  ;D

Scorsese’s Foundation Set To Restore ‘Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag’

MANILA, Philippines – In coordination with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation (WCF) is set to venture on their first-ever Filipino film restoration project.

The confirmation by WCF that Lino Brocka’s “Maynila sa mga Kuko Ng Liwanag” will join the ranks of their organization’s restored films came on Tuesday morning via Twitter, right in the heels of another milestone—the enhancement of the Ishmael Bernal classic “Himala” by ABS-CBN Restoration Project in partnership with Central Digital Lab Inc.

The tweet read, “Pleased to announce our next restoration: Lino Brocka’s 'Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag' w/ Film Development Council of the Philippines!”

Topbilled by Bembol Roco, Hilda Koronel, Lou Salvador, Jr. and Tommy Abuel, “Manila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag” was released in 1975. Its screenplay was penned by Clodualdo Del Mundo based on the novel “In the Claws of Brightness” by Edgardo M. Reyes.

Touted as a Filipino classic film, it has won six FAMAS awards in 1976 including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor for Abuel. In 1981, it also bagged a citation from Gawad Urian as one of the Best Films of the Decade.

Hilda on Brocka:

Ever the stickler for realism, Brocka asked the actress to lie down in a real coffin. Was she spooked!

“As I lay there, I tried to hold my breath,” Koronel, who’s now based in the United States, told the Inquirer in an e-mail interview. “It was one of those coffins for the indigent. I was not even sure if it was new, or if it had been used before.”

She recalled that Brocka insisted on shooting in actual locations—as described in the novel by Edgardo M. Reyes. “He preferred real places, not studio sets. He would ask me to walk around Santa Cruz in Manila, and he would steal shots.” The late filmmaker had wanted to remain faithful to the story, she explained.

Hinanap ko sa betamax sa suking rentahan. Meron pa bang ganyang kalidad ng pelikulang pinoy ngayon?

Hopefully Maynila gets released on home video (DVD or bluray), since the company (World Cinema Foundation) that restored/remastered it was the same one that did the 1960 Korean film Hanyo (The Housemaid). And the film was released on DVD, albeit on limited quantities, back in 2010.

Got my copy of the restored Oro Plata Mata.  I haven't seen it in full yet but I started watching it with Peque's audio commentary last night.  I haven't finished it yet but the audio commentary itself (so far) is worth the purchase price. It's that good and informative!  I noticed the improvement in image quality although the image appears to be very soft and flat. It seems to me that the restorers used too much digital noise reduction.  There's also something off with the framing. Like Himala it seems like they open-matte it to 1.85:1 with the top and bottom cropped.  There's a scene in particular where it's very noticeable. It's the one with Mary Walter catching the girls by the creek talking with a naked man (Ronnie Lazaro), where she ended up throwing guavas at him. There is a shot where a huge part of her head is cut off from the frame.  I remember in the old DVD that that's not the case.  I have to check out my old DVD later and compare.

Sample screen capture showing cropping in the new DVD.

Unrestored DVD

Restored DVD

As you can see this scene was badly cropped. I can't understand why they cropped Mary Walter's head instead of the boulders below the screen.  Or why crop at all?  What's wrong with 1.33:1 aspect ratio when it was the original framing?

I think they cropped it both ways (top and bottom)
but youre right ok naman yun copy nun di restored eh, bakit sa restored kailangan putulin.
di kaya sa zoom settings lang :)

Really annoyed by its screening schedule. Two early afternoon screenings only. I hope I can find time to see it with that schedule.

Three of Vilma Santos's films were restored and remastered recently: "Anak", "Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa?" and “Kapag Langit ang Humatol”. I hope they will get to restore the truly classic ones like "Aguila", "Kisapmata", "Tag-Ulan sa Tag-Araw", "Batch '81", "Kakabakaba Ka Ba?", "Bona" and release them on DVD (at least).

I think they are planning to release the Lamasan film before the year ends, as well as Zialcita's "T-Bird at Ako".

As of to date, I believe they have only released 3 of their restorations on home video, i.e., Himala, Oro Plata Mata, and Ganito Kami Noon... Paano Kayo Ngayon. They also released Celso Ad Castillo's "Virgin People" and Cathy Garcia-Molina's "One More Chance" on iTunes HD.

There are four, they also released Virgin People on DVD a few months ago, but someone from these forums said some parts were edited out. :(

Anyone with a copy of this movie?
It was great to see Manila, Baguio, and Antipolo before they became over populated.

In the US, they have a "National Film Registry" administered by the Library of Congress through its National Film Preservation Board. It is described as "a list of films deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" that are earmarked for preservation by the Library of Congress. These films are not selected as the 'best' American films of all time, but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture. They reflect who we are as a people and as a nation." The public nominate titles (which should've rbeen released at least 10 years ago) for inclusion into the list each year, and the Libraian of Congress names 25 films as inductees. The first registry was named in 1990.

It will be a great idea to adopt a similar project for our own films. As for me, the following titles comes to mind (I've limited my choices to the ones I've seen, and those which were at least 20 years old):
Anak Dalita
Badjao

BTW, the new iTunes release of Himala is worth the upgrade from the DVD.  The image quality has noticeably  improved but on top of that, they've now fixed the edges . Gone are those black tears that appear on and off on the edges of the screen.  The color temperature near the end (sand dunes sequences) has changed as well .  It's a lot warmer than the orginal DVD release and has a slight sepia tone to it.

This is the next best thing to a bluray release.

Keep the DVD for the special features.

The only other one I know is the Martin Scorsese Film Foundation which helps restore classic films from all over the world. They helped restore Maynila sa Kuko Ng Liwanag and Insiang (both are available on the Criterion Collection). I don't know if they're working on any others. I think they might be working to restore Manuel Conde's Genghis Khan, the version without the James Agee narration.
