bro, the 10.1s are stonking for the price.. it's just that the people that say bad things about it don't have a system capable of making them sound good :).

Yes they are, but add a bit more and the Polk RTi series or the Paradigm Atoms surpass them IMHO. . . .

They are not ngongo as the Diamond 9.1 speakers that I had as a starter system, but you can do better. If they were priced at the same level as the 9.1s, then they would be an untouchable value for money.

Teka ano na ba system mo . . . am confused . . . :-)

no. the atoms don't surpass them. i have a pair of atoms here and after a week i put the 10.1s back in their "stand", 10.1 more open, maganda ang mid, bigger sound and hindi nakakapagod. detail would be a toss-up. check out the stereophile review. they place these as 350$ and they compare favorably vs other speakers in that price range or higher. read in foreign forums about people buying these for 350$ and they say it sounds good.

the rti is 3x times the price and i have no interest in buying those. these already sound pretty good and i see no need to spend any more.

joey - what happened to you ? we were texting, you didn't reply after and you didn't even drop by. ?

I have heard this Denton 80th Anniversary @ Adelphi SG, paired with NAD C356 amp, I say maganda ang tunog, polite-sounding typical sa mga British loudspeakers, hindi bright at fatiguing common sa mga ibang bookshelf speakers...Siguro mas maganda pa ang tunog nito kung sa tube amp.  I also like the retro-classic looks plus the solid-built quality and real wood finish.  Priced @ SG$900 (approx. Php31K).

I've been searching for a speaker for a secondary living room system and I've auditioned quite a bit of them.  Brands I've auditioned were affordable bookshelf and floorstanding models of Wharfedale/Epos/Tannoy/Mission/Polk/Dali and yes even Dai-Ichi . .   ;D

I would have loved to get a B&W CM5 or an RS3 but my budget was whittled down by a need to fit my budget to buy new appliances (TV/AIrcon/Speakers), so my budget was only for the entry to low-mid speakers . . .

On my final short-list was the Epos Epic 2, Tannoy Mercury V, Polk RtiA3, Wharfedale 100 and the Mission MX3.

Then suddenly I saw that SIght and Sounds was selling the Denton at a sub-20k price, so I went over to the shop to have a listen.

Associated components were:

1) Rega Elicit integrated amp
2) iPhone 4S with Apple Lossless files and 256kbps AAC from iTunes store
3) LOD to RCA cable
4) Furukawa Power Cable

Closer look on the speaker:

Tracks used were my usual speaker audition tracks, notably:

1) Magnificent Seven - Apple Lossless, from Bose Audition CD
2) Africa - Apple Lossless
3) Bring Me to Life - Apple Lossless
4) Man in The Mirror (acoustic guitar by Tuck Andress) - Apple Lossless
5) Sweet Baby (new version) - Apple Lossless
6) Locked Out of Heaven - 256kbps AAC

I usually use the Magnificent Seven track to see the speaker's quality and quantity of bass.  I was pleasantly surprised that the Denton had enough of both, despite 5 inch woofer.  Immediately noticeable was that the Dentons had a warmish signature to them, giving them additional perceived bass depth, and bass was actually very tight.

What was also apparent was the very detailed highs, somewhat rolled off (thus less fatiguing).  But without the usual weakness of budget speakers - warm pero ngongo, detailed pero very sharp.

Plus, the cabinet was very finely finished.  Very nice real wood veneer.  Maybe they learned something from the cabinetry of Castle, which parent IAG acquired some years back.  I have a Castle Richmond on loan to my father-in-law, and I can tell you the veneer of the Denton is just as good.

Over-all, it was a very nice, well-balanced speaker, albeit on the warm side.  One nice surprise was the price - at 17.6k deferred for 12 months, the speaker is a steal at that price.  If you consider that the overseas price of the Dentons are at about 30k or so, and considering that these speakers are a limited edition series (I've read there will be only be 2k plus examples made worldwide), the value proposition of the Dentons is very persuasive. . .

Very persuasive in fact, I bought the only pair that Sight and Sounds has . . . ;D

In terms of sound quality, yes.  But for HT use you may need an 8 inch or 10 inch sealed sub to augment the bass.

Napansin ko lang sa Wharfedale, parang pinabayaan nila yung build/finish sa Diamond 100 series nila ngayon. Buti naman maganda finish nila sa Jade and Dentons nila.

Out of the box pa.  Will likely improve with break in once I install it.  I'd likely use it bi-wired, as my old Diamonds sounded better bi-wired.

The 100 series got a beating in terms of fit and finish sa What HIFI. . .

I also auditioned the smallest Jade floorstander at Spectra, and I think the Denton is significantly better.  The Jade floorstanders are another thing altogether, pero they're near B&W CM5 and 684-683 territory, so out of my prescribed budget.

January issue hifi- world - awarded as "Best Bookshelf Speaker 2012"

Not saying to rely everything on the review but rather use these reviews to help trim down the choices.

Sana magka stock ulit sa sns......(still hoping)

Foreign prices for the Jade will be about 2x more. So yung smaller FS nila nasa 120k siguro dapat. I dont think they are in the same bracket as the CM5s. i think its gonna compete with PSB Imagine T2 or BW CM7 or the Goldenear towers

Fit sa budget ko yung Jade 1, but the Dentons are cheaper and they are much better sounding IMHO.

Medyo malalapit na rin prices yung aforementioned higher end speaks:

1) CM5 - 48k cash (SnS)
2) 684 - 46k cash (SnS)
3) 683 - 61k cash (SnS)
4) Jade 5  - 60k (from Tmans)

Goldenears are very nice speakers as I've demoed them everytime I buy stuff from the Grey Market (hirap kasi parking sa MLY along Kalayaan).  The Aon 2 and Aon 3 were the best fit in terms of getting floorstander-like sound at the size of a bookshelf.  Pero the price of both were way beyond what I could afford to spend at the moment.

So kay Denton muna akoh . . . :-)

Out of the box, these speakers are warm sounding but not slow/fatiguing. Images well too. Details are present.

Speakers are packed very well (speakers are placed inside a bag similar to a hotel laundry bag made of linen). Manuals and brochures are placed inside an envelop. Contains a pair of white gloves too. Excellent craftsmanship!

Like idol Superman, could not wait for the place where the Dentons will be place to be completed.

Set it up in my current rig:

Initial impressions are the same: warmish sound character, bass surprisingly ample and tight despite the 5 inch woofer. Not quite as low as my main speakers, as it has a bigger cabinet and an 8 inch woofer.

Breaking them in and will see if they improve.

looking for BS below 20K to be matched with HK 3490.  in my list are PSB B6, Epos Epic 2 and WH Denton, will be used for movies as 2.1 set up and for music 2 channel.  Prefers warm and round sound.  i used to have WH Amber FS and medyo nakukulangan ako sa high.

I know it's better to audition but any input will be greatly appreciated.  it's ok to be biased towards Denton as long as explained very well.  TIA.

No explaination needed sir luis. Get the dentons. Period. :)
£500 SRP nya abroad, so ka level nya halos cm1 and the likes.
B&W 685 is £380 overseas. That's how cheap the dentons here in our shores. We are very very very lucky.

So good that i'm getting another pair. Reserba. :)

This can help/confuse you:

http://www.stereophile.com/content/2012-recommended-components-loudspeakers

The Epos Epic 2 is in the Class C category in the list. Scroll down to see it. The classification takes SQ in high regard across categories but grades the speakers in terms of completeness of the low freqs. Class A is full range. Class C has less low end and so on.

Of course consider the speaker in relation to your equipment.

Medyo manipis sound ng HK amps, so you would be better off getting speakers on the warm side or something with a bit more bass.

Epic 2 is nice pero found it lacking in bass.  Better balanced and better sounding yung Elan 15. Yung mga lower end Wharrfedales medyo ngongo ng konti.  The Jade and Dentons have nice crisp treble w/o being harsh. Between the 2 brothers, I give the Denton the edge over the Jade.  PSB i find medyo neutral, so it may not fit the bill for warm sound.

Well, siyempre nasa Denton thread ka, so you know where this is going . . . :-p

Bro. Anton, post mo na ung Denton mo. :D

After 50+ hours of listening here is my newbie opinion (wala pang 1 year sa audio hobby ;D): the strength of these speakers is the details, very good mids, excels in jazz, vocal jazz & classical though I listened a couple of times to Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged and I clearly heard Jerry Cantrell's fingers sliding on the fretboard & the vibration of plucked strings. The rolled off highs won't give you any screech at all as evident when I listened to Miles Davis' "All Blues". The bass is tight but just can't quite keep up with the bass drops on James Blake's "Limit to your Love", it is understandable given the size of these bookshelf speakers.

Did I mention anything about the build quality? One word: Superb! It will annihilate all competition at this price point...Bottom line is, I'm very very pleased & I think this one is for keeps  ;)

Note: I use these in my small studio via MBP>Audirvana Plus>JDS Labs ODAC>Canare RCA>Arcam A65+>QED speaker wires.

I agree brader, i'm driving it with rotel rb1080.
Jaw dropping details, excellent mids, very ample bass.
With the aid of my tannoy ts10 sub? Nothing i could ask for.
I could live with the dentons for years......many years....excellent speakers. The price and build quality is amazing.

Wala bang graph ng FR nito? Hehe! Maganda makita how it performs at 60, 75 and 90 db. Hehe!

http://www.hi-fiworld.co.uk/index.php/loudspeakers/65-reviews/519--wharfedale-denton-80th-anniversay-edition.html

The Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniversary Edition measured flat on-axis, grill on or off. Slightly off-axis (i.e. pointing straight down a room and not at the listener), with grill on, it gave the result published. Taking the grill off made little difference, even above 10kHz where wavelengths are short, and off-axis balance differed little from on-axis so dispersion is good.  Phase matching was also very good, response varying little with height. Although looking retro, the Denton was in fact better than most modern loudspeakers in these important areas. The drive units are very high quality.

Absence of a midband crossover dip will result in plentiful detail and a sense of definition, whilst the slow roll off in upper treble will ensure the sort of smooth sound older loudspeakers were known for. This is a loudspeaker that will not screech, yet it is tonally very accurate, more so than most.

The bass unit reaches down to 70Hz and there is some peaking around 100Hz. The two small ports are broadly tuned (red trace) and effectively damp the bass unit so the Denton 80th has good bass control and will not boom or sound sloppy. Although port output reaches down low, small ports do not produce much acoustic power; their SPL was just +2dB up on forward output at 80Hz.

Our 200mS decay spectrum (not shown here) was clean, even at low frequencies; the cabinet is not ‘hot’ and will not overhang or boom. The drive units are relatively uncoloured too.

At 86dB sensitivity was high as small loudspeakers go, largely because a 4 Ohm bass unit has been used and, below 500Hz, this is a 4 Ohm loudspeaker our impedance curve shows (5.7 Ohms overall). This curve also confirms excellent bass unit damping by absence of residual peaks either side of the anti-resonant port system. The load is largely resistive, another plus point, as energy is not returned to the amplifier.

The Denton will have strong upper bass and a full bodied presentation, with smooth treble and plenty of mid-range detail. Bass looks controlled and should be of good quality. This is a very modern, well executed design. Only the cabinet is trad.

Wala pa din waterfall app. Ang dami na ngang RTA sa android. But most of them may bayad kapad mas-powerful.

Dip ba yun sa 50s region? May peak ang room ko around 60hz. Bagay sa room ko kung ganyan ang magiging reaction niya sa room ko. Buti na lang wala nang stock.  ;D
Title: Re: Wharfedale Dentons . . . a brief review
Post by: Gino on Jul 17, 2013 at 10:29 AM
The speaker naturally rolls off below 100hz. The bass reflex design bumps up 100hz. That accounts for the "dips" below and above 100hz. It is a very good implementation which should give a good sense of bass impact.

The past 2 months daw bigla tumaas ang demand, in fact may 2 pang nagpa-reserve pag dumating na bagong shipment...good news is they are expecting new stocks to arrive next weekend, so kuha na mga PDVDers.

1st blind buy speakers lol..for this year I was really gunning for a set of speakers costing 4x of this before getting married sa january..but I needed the funds so I opted for this set..plus the price/performance ratio is a no brainer..but I really intended to buy this for my father as a retirement gift..gusto ko na palitan JBL loudspeakers and Bose monitors nya..pero akin na lang muna haha.

I was really surprised by the packaging of the speakers..sanay kasi ako sa mga entry level lang na gears..they are in individual bags and they do indeed have gloves for handling..the finish and the build quality really shouts quality..very happy with it..I am feeling sorry for my father baka hindi ko na ibigay sa kanya haha..

anyway..what is the finish of the denton? it's not glossy kasi..it's like soft matte or something..do you guys know?

to sir deist and other who has sir joma's stand creations for dentons..when you place the speakers on the stands, do you put something that prohibits na speakers from sliding? or diretso patong lang?

for the longest time I can finally update my HT Picture gallery thread again hehe

I use an artist product from National Bookstore. It is for tacking. Parang strips of bubble gum. Holds in place but can be removed easily.

bro, AFAIK the finish is mahogany wood veneer. talagang matte ang finish. for the speakers not to slide on the stands; I use Bostik Blu-Tack.  reference pic below:

hahaha I agree, durog yung mga mas mahal na speakers sa finish nito, ganda ng pagka-wrap around ng veneers. blu-tack is safe naman, basta pag iaangat mo yung speakers from the stands pa-twist ang motion & hindi pa-hila, for added caution  ;)

just want to post a pic of my denton
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee314/disturbed743483/Denton.jpg)

I just tested it last night, since I don't have any proper source, I used my mp3 player/dock > line out > amp to hear them sing..went through some tracks and right away I noticed that it excels on acoustic, orchestra,pop/rnb..but not on my rock collections..it's like the bass was on top of the mids..I like details, mids and punchy bass..I am using an iem fischer audio dba-02 mkII and can't help comparing them..anyway before I post some other impressions I need to put them in proper position since I don't have any speaker stands..they were on top of the rack and close together..I will update this thread again once I complete my setup..anyway that is just my initial impressions..need to get stands asap and hopefully my proper source arrives in 2 weeks..

I'm using my dentons with death/thrash metal music, maganda naman but not exceptional. Wag lang masyado malakas 100 watter lang dentons. With my rotel pre/power well defined yung intruments, di binabaon ng bass yung mid, i am using a tannoy ts10 sub kasi pag rock/metal bitin bass nya.

any suggestions?..I'll create another thread or update my old one so I can ask guys for help regarding this..

my digital pre-amp/dac just arrived and I will use my laptop muna as source habang wala pa magamit..lets see if mag improve compared sa gamit kong mp3 player as source hehe..sorry for hijacking this thread..

Floor plan and room dimensions pls. Include height and window locations. Add special considerations for layout. Bali things you arent allowed to do.

^ sa situation mo ngayon sir marami pang variables: proper source, your DAC needs some burn-in time (the Dentons too!), isolation of your speakers, listening room size & treatment, we can't easily pinpoint which is causing the unpleasant sound. For me, i would start with proper source & stands  ;)

You can set up your room with "improper" source. You will tune for good tonal balance. Details and image precision you can fine tune later. At the moment critical factors are speaker height and placent. Listener's sitting height and location. If you can mimmic speaker stands without buying, then you can have customs made with exact height you need. be creative. Or buy cheap stand muna then dagdag bawas with books. Measure twice cut once. See you at your setup thread.

ayun, another term I was thinking, it's really resonating on some other tracks but not all..It's like I can feel it clinging to the walls..my amp is just a simple power amp lang sir volume control is all you have hehe..it has no loudness function like integrated amps we have at the province..

Loudness on vintage amps are only used on very low listening volumes, i.e. late night listening. Everything bloats when you use that button on normal listening levels.

ah yes for the meantime I used the avrack and plastic cabinet as stands for the speakers since they have the same height..thanks sir..I'll post it later.

You have sub-optimal placement of speakers.  For bookshelves, you should have them clear of walls, and tweeters at ear-level height, otherwise the speakers will boom and will not have proper imaging.  Moving you speakers closer to the wall acts more like a tone control, where bass will be reinforced, which may or may not be to your liking.

I suggest reserving judgement on any speaker until you can place them properly.  Otherwise, adding a nice source will not add much to the presentation.

Try mo to place the speakers and your listening position in a inverted equilateral triangle, with your listening position as the apex.  Try to have the speakers at the same distance between the right and left walls of the room (as well as the back) and experiment with the width between speakers.  Spaced properly, Dentons should "disappear" in terms of imaging.

^ thanks for the comments sir muypogi..

I have the speakers 1 ft off the wall at the side and 2 ft off the wall at the back since I am thinking that moving it away from the wall is always good.. but what I did last night is moved it back to 1 ft..so its 1ft sa side and back..the resonating lows diminished not sure by how much but I heard the difference on the fly..

yes will reserve any judgement on the speakers since there are a lot of factors involve..sorry to have post some not so good impressions that is misleading and do not really say anything about the charateristics of the speaker..hopefully tomorrow I will be able to put up my thread..hope you can chime in with your opinions..

I will still use my av rack and plastic cabinet which are 2 ft in ht so I can continue with some experiments..matatagalan pa speaker stands..thanks again

Never appologize for your impressions. Setting up a speaker is part of the experience. Your impressions, as long as qualified with pertinent details, will help someone in the future. Impressions are personal and are never wrong.

I have both. Both are very good sounding bookshelf speakers. Both are warm sounding and very detailed. The rx1 sounds bigger, and produces bigger scale. While the dentons are smoother in the mids the rx1 sounds larger and has more powerful bass rarely found on speakers its size. Both are very special speakers.

Yung warm sound ng denton would better match the rotel and rega.
But the nad would be good too as the dentons have good detail presentation.

Just read the link posted re: Denton vs Harbeth...I have owned both speaker brands...not to sound too defensive but the Denton was a "compromise" for him since he had some "circumstance" which he did not elaborate. While the Dentons are bang for the back speakers, one cannot really compare both brands...it's not an apple to apple comparison...nevertheless, the Dentons are excellent for its price point...rare since it is an 80th anniversary version...

+1 on idol Superman's opinion.  I have the Denton and the Harbeth Compact 7.  For the price locally, the Denton is a screaming good value, as the sound quality is surprisingly good and the designers essentially hit the mark when they wanted to update the Denton model.

That being said, the Denton is far from beating a Harbeth. . . if you owned both the differences would be very clear.

For the price, the Denton is literally a steal, specially here sa Pinas where the pricing was very low.

The Denton is a top notch speaker and still a winner among the few bookshelf speakers within the same price range I have auditioned :)

They are still available locally and will be out of stock soon enough.

IMHO, they have won against the Tannoy DC6, Polk Audio Rti A3, Wharfedale 122. I am still in the quest to hear other bookshelf speakers in this price range.

This is true. Sa singapore SGD800 yan, around 26K converted to peso. Locally, this is still tough to beat comparing it to competition in terms of price range. Lalo na aesthetic wise, di tinipid sa ginamit na veneer, classic enclosure design & finish  O0

It is because they are being sold cheap saatin. Lucky for us. Sa UK £500 sila. :)

Hmmm, pinag-iisipan kong ipalit sa brand new bx2 ko paired with marantz pm6005. Masyado bassy kasi at maliit lang yung music room ko, baka sumakto yung Denton sa requirement ko. I am inclined to neutral sounding due to my frequent headphone/iem listening.

Dentons are not neutral though. They are warm-sounding, since they are supposed to emulate the sound of the classic Dentons.

Might be a good pair with Marantz

I heard the denton a couple of times already and i believe it renders a good place on jazz, vocals and slow music.  It has some limitations on extreme frequencies which are prominent on playing folk rock and intrument heavy songs.  It somewhat lacks that agility and sharp tone or shimmer and the detail of lows.  But it excels on mellow tune.  It throws that warm and relaxing tone that is pleasing to the ear.  Hindi ear fatiguing and i could easily withstand its sound ng maghapon.

This is just me.

I
I tried paring my smsl sa 60 with the dentons, they sound well at lower listening volumes but when you turn it up loud, the smsl starts clipping.

The dentons need a decent amount of power to sound their best. Avoid placing it very near the wall :)

Try to drop by Makati Cinema Square. It's an audio haven. Lots of shop to choose from and carries different brands. Watt Hifi carries PSB, Reference 3A, Paradigm, B&W, Wharfedale, Rega, KEF and marami pang iba. Audio Venue carries Sonus Faber. Toys for the Audio Boys got Monitor Audio, Proac etc., Sensible Audio got  some classic preloved speakers. There is also another shop upstairs, I think they carry Tannoy.

For stereo setups, best to use sealed subs and use the high level (speaker level inputs) to make sure the exact same signal sent to the speakers is sent to the subs.

Medyo mataba na tunog ng Dentons, so I would recommend a 8-10 inch sealed sub to augment the lows.

Got a handmedown Wharfedale SW150 from Sir Ace, and it sounds awesome paired with the Dentons.

Great for RnB and for your EDM music. I set the sub to be a bit subtle to only help the speakers on lower frequencies.

These things are simply awesome for the price!

new Denton owner here, temporarily paring it with rega elicit in my listening area.

excellent combo in my opinion. full bodied sound, very good lows that does not overwhelm the high and the mid.  high and mid are very clear, overall warm but exciting. i did not expect the combo to be this good, very satisfying, amazing value for money for the Dentons.

Sorry for resurrecting this. I'm heavily considering the Dentons. How would you compare the Zensor 3 vs. the Dentons?

And are there any long term test reports for the rest of the early adopters?

Sir I have both, IMHO the DENTONS tops out the DALIs Z3. example I tried to to put both w/ my tube system the Z3 sounded so thin & pale while the other sounded so warm & rich, not to miss out the bottom end, it has a lot GOOD LOWS too.

You could use the DENTONS w/ any & it would really suffice. The best part is its only cost P13k. Bang for the buck talaga!  HTH

looks good and sounds good.lost several hours of sleep as i kept saying to myself "just one more track then i'll go to bed. " not realizing that it's already 5am and the sun's about to  come out.

hello sir, sorry ngayon ko lang nakita itong reply mo. My Jade 5, at least in my room exhibits better imaging and depth than the PSB Synchrony One B that it replaced. Central image is more palpable, and I prefer the midrange more because it sounds more fluid, and human-like. Bass is superior than any speaker I have used, not only in quality but quantity as well but that could be because I was a bookshelf speaker person before. In short, it is better in all aspects that I look for in a speaker vs the one it replaced, and those are  transparency, speed, imaging, PRAT and midrange fluidity. I love these speakers and punches waaaaaay above its price.

80th Denton 10k na lang! Bigla tuloy ako napakuha ng dalawang pares. Lagay ko sa mga kuwarto. Very impressed sa sound compared to more expensive B&W sa showroom. Really a steal for 10k..

How to do bi wiring with a yamaha a1020 amp? Can i use the a and b speaker outs at the same time? Just want to see if there's any benefit and at the same time fix the issue with the jumpers on the speakers.as of the moment the jumpers are causing the speakers to lose connection.

Thank you.

Need your inputs guys. Whats a good integrated amp to pair with the Dentons? I am looking at a simpler set up in my room. Huag yung expensive na amps ha. Marantz? or NAD?

The amp needs to sound detailed because the Dentons are warm sounding. They match well with my Cambridge CXA60. With my NAD C368 they sound too dark already.

Brand new wala na siguro. These units for sale got exposed to moisture hence no warranty from the former distributor.

Try mo brother with with Yamaha, Marantz or Onkyo.

Neutral to brightish speaker wire is also recommended.
