Anyone using this dac? Been using a toshiba laptop as my source for the past year and courses through a superpro dac, I am planning to upgrade to the w4s dac2 and am looking for others who have experience in the settings...

Congrats Sonny! Since no one chimed to your request ..... please give us your impressions on the sonic impact to your system. That would need some break-in.... and by January when we schedule the Quiapo EB, maybe we can have a listen.

definitely Joey.... 200 to 300 hours to make it smooth and tame.
so far, separation of instruments are apparent. a little rough at the moment but already better than what I used....

I don't know kung meron pa pwede i-tweak on the DAC's hardware. maybe you can tweak your player's settings para mas maganda yung magiging output nito sa system ninyo :)

Go ako dyan Joey....
6 moons compared it with the Weiss dac202 (a dac that I want but cannot afford :P). they gave it a blue moon award and rated it very close to the Weiss but did not beat it....
the weiss cost $6.7k and this one $1.5k

great to hear that! haven't tried jriver yet, hindi ko kasi alam kung paano ayusin ang settings para magamit ito with my setup :) glad na nag-e-enjoy po kayo sa new DAC ninyo :)

Wow! This is a very good DAC. Based on the D/A chip alone ESS9018, this looks like a winner.

Marami akong plano... Pero plano lang, mahirap matuloy kung walang pambili... Siguro sa dulo ulit ng year 2014... Seems i can only afford a purchase like this every other year.

I have been looking for a good dac since sept. brader... Nangontrata na nga ako kung maguupgrade prend ko eh. Then nakita ko to sa hifi show.... Really I wanted the weiss dac, pero hindi talaga kaya kahit paano ko ikutikutin ang budget. Buti na lang ang review ng 6 moons sakto ang tinapatan....

Sat down for 3 hours and listened to my system this morning. So far medyo clinical pa. I really am not a big believer of break in period, but everything I read about this dac leads me to it...
Am so far into 20 hours pa lang.... 9 more days... I can't wait

the amps are gainclone mono blocks made by Jojod.... they sound so clean, detailed and with enough juice, couldn't be happier.

Alam nyo, mag arrange kaya tayo ng dac shoot out? And to be fair let us invite the dealers para they have a say... Of course there should be a criteria like price range.... Apples to apples is best or within the same price bracket. I am aware. Hat the w4s has a cheaper dac that can go head to head with the one most own....

rainy afternoon, nice time to listen to jazz.... but once lightning started to come, my system goes to rest.... it's been 75hours already and I'm pretty happy as it is... super bonus na lang whatever improvements that will come.

was wondering why the dac only shows 48k when I was playing 24/88.2 flac.... turned out the player (jriver had it set to down sample anything higher than 48k but lower than 192k.... now corrected though also now I can have the player upsample should I wish to.

I only have time to listen at night when I get home kasi kaya when I relax a bit, I get the chance to relish the sound. I keep it running the whole time for it to properly break in and so far improvements keep coming.

Approximately 155 hours into the break in period and i have lost a lot of bass... And from what i read, this seems like a normal occurrence in this dac... I just have to wade it out and continue.

about 2.5 hours from when I last listened I notice the bass coming back, happy sound... but soundstage is all over naman :'( the good thing is I'm prepared for it since there are lots of write ups online that one can expect this to occur. Funny though the soundstage is acting up, the tonality is greatly improving.... :P

Warning: If anyone is thinking of getting this dac, be prepared to upgrade any weak link on your chain.... The wyred4sound dac2 is so good you will definitely want everything to perform as good!

funny what power cables can do... in my case connected to the w4s dac2 this is what it did:
tonality: 7
soundstage/imaging: 7
flexibility (of the cable): 5
transparency: 8
I rated them basing with the standard power cable supplied with the w4s dac2. 1 being the lowest, 5 being the standard and 10 best....
power cables is one of those tweaks that gets little attention, funny but it seems that is should be one of those first tweaks because it produces a night and day change (improves or degrades).
this power cable made the tonality of my system sound better, bass seem to tighten and lifted a veil of blurriness. It also improved the soundstage but not by a huge margin though noticeable still. Silent passages were very clean.

mas maganda lang itsura nito brader pero ang tunog pareho lang dun sa gawa mo...

try a usb cable against a stock cable and compare the benefit. Before you decide to get a usb cable, now try a power cable against a stock one..... you might be surprised of the outcome....

The biggest improvements I got are from the highend cables tha Cal makes............

Para sa akin, oo! Pero kung maka kuha ka ng gamit na hi end sounding for a low end cost, ito ang ang panalo! But in Sonny' s case, since he was able to acquire a 160K speaker and 70K dac, a 5K USB cable is definitely a loose change!! ;D

234 hours into break in and it has been fun. Heard the bass get bloated then disappeared, soundstage was all over the room. Then it tightened, but it also gave shrills on the highs afterwhich directionality went all over once more....
Now, it just sounds fantastic with everything in the right amount... But I still keep it on maybe until Christmas day. This is a gift for myself anyway for the past and this years christmas....

made me fall in love again with songs which previously started to bore me.... and is getting me interested in a lot of genres.

I believe that is true Joey. I really wish we can try you buffalo dac with the w4s, it should be interesting. And to make it better, lets try your dac in my system then will try the w4s in yours....

now since I got back and installed the power cable, I have been listening to my music...
from Josh Groban's "you're still you", I feel more command on his voice and the violins in the background never sounded so sweet.
Chuck Mangione's "feel so good" gets more air, the drum cymbals soft and loud are so clear. it really feels so, so good...
almost any song in Andy McKee's Art of Motion album, you can enjoy the vibration coming the string from his guitar...
Toto's "geory porgy"... must be the Prat, the drums sound so natural and the organ as if it I can touch it...
and Chris Jones "long after you're gone" (one of my favorite and a staple in my system) just sounds so right.... with the bass guitar giving of a deep rich bass.
I do attribute the changes did come from both the dac and the synergy it gave to my system...

Monos + W4 sound dac and as pre amp combo gives superb sonic presentation. I believe adding an active linestage would enhance / improve more the over all character.

We were able to hear the buffalo dac 1, wala kasing buffalo ll. but we were not able to give it a proper a-b test bec of the difference in dac input. The buffalo did play but we used an sotm between the laptop and dac to complete the connection.

Just make sure that the component is downgrade proof ...... in case DSD flops. I do factor in the availability of music material before I take a plunge. Just my dos sentimos ;)

Yes I do agree that the dsd material is very important too.... There seems to be around 7,000 albums pa lang currently in dsd format. Hopefully pop, hip hop and other genres join in as these are the likes that limit their numbers....

Ewan ko ba brader, so far the only info I got is that the unit needs to be sent to w4s usa for the upgrade... Not only will it cost more than I hope, it will also take longer. Been quiet here for a while and another set of waiting time could be tiring...
Might try to enjoy the upgrade on the amps muna before I decide to send my dac for the mod... But then again, who knows....... Hehehehe

I did think about that and the option of getting an off ramp5 instead. the second option I thought might be a good choice in case I decide to change dac and can keep it. but with the integer mode included in the mod, it would be very hard to beat that together with the rest of the upgrades....

There have been lots of audiophiles with the same reaction digitalwise esp with the advent of the new format (dsd). Unfortunately, like most new formats the selection of music is still very small. Though hi-res is getting very popular lately with a reasonable selection.
This is what totally stopped me from going analogue altogether.

If eying for the SE upgrade capability, better to sell the DAC2 and buy the SE version. Upgrading the DAC2 to SE will be too costly as shipping the existing DAC2 back and fort will be too much of a cost.

Magschedule ka brader pag buo na kwarto mo, dalhin ko dac2 pati yung laptop ko.... Naka tweak kasi yun from bios to os.....
Yung laptop madali lang brader, daming mura na older model or secondhand...

Still burning in pero so far ganda ng sound, soundstage opened up and everything seems to be in the right places.
Will post more pag natapos na burn-in.

Still burning in pero so far ganda ng sound, soundstage opened up and everything seems to be in the right places.
Will post more pag natapos na burn-in.

Interconnects and power cables all come from our resident cable guy Cal.... The ic's got lots of testaments and I need not add any, but the power cable.... Its an investment I am happy I took.

Nag order kasi ako ng linear PSU kay Hynes kaso hiwalay pala mains cable.

Next move would be to upgrade my dac2 to dac2se na.... Either I send my dac to the factory in the US or dispose and get new. Unfortunately the upgrade alone cost a minimum of another 1k...... USD! Huhuhu

Money isn't that important if you have it brader.... Ang mahirap is it isn't readily available. Sardinas nanaman ako di pa nakakarecover eto nanaman.... Huhuhu

Dsd capability plus jitter reduction plus support for higher bitrate plus marami kasing dinagdag ang w4s eh.... Its just like having an off-ramp 5 sa system (jitter removal and I2s support meaning direct connection sa dac chip which in turn eliminates jitter) di ko pa naman talaga kailangan.... Pero......... You know. Heheheh

In the meantime na nagsasardinas ka, why not get an iUSB Power muna para ma-enjoy mo ang level up na dac2. Madali naman i-dispose yan in the future cause almost anong ikabit namin with the iUSB Power improves. You can also it with your external drives to intercept the noise coming from the USB power supply.

Wala ang mc18 nyan brader....
Your computer will upsample your files jhameeh to dsd kahit cd file size lang sya. Less load on your dac as well.

Bantayan mo kaya ang heat ng zuma mo brader. Kasi the conversion load will be on your cpu... Wala naman issues from others pero best na nababantayan.

Jhameeh uses exasound exa20 and me I use wyred4sound dac2DSDse... Both are dsd capable
