Title: HEGEL Music Systems
Post by: ArchitecturalAudio on Jun 20, 2013 at 12:50 AM
Architectural Audio is proud to announce the addition of HEGEL Music Systems into our exceptional roster of offerings.  Hegel is the brain child of Bent Holter, a Semi-conductor physicist as well as a musician.  Mr. Holter worked on transistors at the molecular level and earned a couple of patents that are being utilized in Hegel's amplifiers and digital products.  The company has been around for about 30 years and continue to make inroads due to its technical know how, but more importantly for sounding extremely musical!

Architectural Audio has demo units of most of Hegel's integrated amplifiers and separates.  Please do stop by the shop to listen to these wonderful sounding amplifiers!

For more details about Hegel, please do visit their website:  http://www.hegel.com/ (http://www.hegel.com/)

See you soon!  :) :) :)

Recent review of the Hegel H300 Integrated Amplifier

"The greatest tribute I can pay the H300 is at once understated yet in its way an overwhelming affirmation: In all the hours I spent with this amp, I never wanted to shut it off. Ever. It represents the high end at its most rewarding." - Neil Gader, The Absolute Sound (June 2013)

Excellent Review for the Hegel H70:

http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/hegel4/2.html

The Hegel H70 has won HighFidelity.com’s Red Fingerprint

"Prospective mates. This is why I clearly envision the type of loudspeaker the H70 should work best with (I wrote ‘should’ since everything will depend on a given room acoustics, personal tastes and expectations). On one hand these will be speakers like Xavian, which most formal presentations ought to be conducted with. These Czech loudspeakers with the Italian heart are very precise and splendidly balanced but sometimes simply scream out for something like the H70. I am sure that their creator Roberto Barletta listens to them and tunes them using this type of electronics. Or that this is the result he cares about.

On the other hand it is hard for me not to mention Harbeth with which the Hegel amplifier, just like Lavardin earlier, interfaced with ease. I would start with the tiny P3ESR. Here a strong bass foundation from the amplifier will inject new life which the speakers shall reward with precision and refinement. The H70 has very good pace, is very rhythmic and never loses color temperature even from pale club versions of, say Depeche Mode’s double maxi-single Fragile Tension & Hole to Feed. What I would avoid are clearly warm speakers as for example the previously reviewed Castle. This combination might get too syrupy.

I know exactly who won’t like this amplifier. When somebody wants to know everything very precisely to prefer transient contours and detail above saturation, this is not the amplifier. When we fancy the sound of strong cymbals; or the complete lighting of the soundstage is more important to us than its continuity (unfortunately and as always, we need to choose as compromises are inevitable); we need to search elsewhere. But when we like fullness, smoothness, naturalness and above all when our music collection is dominated by rock and electronica which we want to hear in their full glory, this Hegel becomes a mandatory audition. And, we get a good DAC for free as well as an USB input with it. "

Technical data (according to manufacturer):
Output power: 2x70W/8Ω
Volume, inputs and muting controlled by (optional) Hegel RC3 remote

Analog frequency response: 1Hz - 100.000Hz
Signal to noise ratio: >100dB
Crosstalk: < -100dB

Damping factor: > 1000
Output stage: four x 15A/150W high-speed bipolar transistors

Here is another Hegel + Harbeth review for you Superman!  O0

"There’s no getting around it, the H100 is a compact powerhouse. After the Magnepans, I switched to the Harbeth Monitor 40.1’s. While a fairly easy load to drive, they are somewhat inefficient with a sensitivity rating of 84db/1watt. This was another incredible match, listening to the new Beatles remasters on the Hegel/Harbeth combination was outstanding. “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” had a wonderful tonality about it, with the Fab Four spread out on the soundstage in all their glory. And I could play the big Harbeths loud without strain, which was a ton of fun, staying in the British sound vein, spinning some Dire Straits and Pink Floyd before calling it a day on this listening session."

..."I’m happy to give these Hegel products one of our Exceptional Value awards for 2010. These two offer everything that we value in a great HiFi component: great sound, functional ease and pleasing aesthetics. It is a strong testament to their design that they sounded just as at home with reasonably priced speakers as with considerably more-expensive models. This is truly a pair of components that could be the basis for building a great system and upgrade your speakers later, or add a highquality analog front end to without requiring another amplifier upgrade."

Also, from the same review...... for Magnepan users .....

"As mentioned earlier, the H100 is rated at 120 watts per channel into an 8-ohm load and 220 per channel into 4 ohms. With this kind of power on tap, I thought “magnepan” right away, and it proved to be an excellent choice. though the 1.6’s are a relatively inexpensive speaker, they are very resolving and need a lot of power to sound their best. I would say that the H100 has done a better job of driving these speakers than anything else I’ve had the opportunity to sample at this price point"

Hmmmmmm ..... no problem with magnepans.......

Thank you, Epoy and Nico for the opportunity to listen to the Hegel H70. It sounds fantastic! Good match w/ the Dali Zensor and I am sure it will match with the Harbeths. Big soundstage w/ the details...

Considering it has been run for 50-hours pa lang, I am sure it will sound much fuller when it reaches the 100th hour. I'll tey to go back tomorrow to try the built-in DAC.

Thanks again! Do text me when you're in Davao!

"In fact, no matter how you cut it, the Hegel has got it all going on, as an unbiased transporter for music reproduction or in its sophisticated connectivity or in its forward thinking philosophy or sheer value. The greatest tribute I can pay the H300 is at once understated yet in its way an overwhelming affirmation: In all the hours I spent with this amp, I never wanted to shut it off. Ever. The H300’s across-the-board high level of performance is mainly why we’re including it in our list of Recommended Reference Components, but there’s another reason, one not mentioned in Hans’s review. He didn’t buy the review sample, because that was already scheduled to go elsewhere; but Hans did buy a brand-new H300 to use as his reference integrated amplifier and DAC. It’s one thing for a writer to recommend a product for someone else to buy; it’s quite another for him to believe in it enough to buy it himself and use it as his reference for that component category. In fact, it’s the highest compliment a reviewer can give to any product, and to the company that makes it.

Side Note: We heard from the grapevine that Michael Fremer liked this combo.  Such comment is indeed refreshing given that his medium of preference is analog  ;) ;) ;)

In our opinion, it is not a picky amplifier.  So far, Hegel has worked well with all the speakers we have partnered them with specifically Dali, Magico, Harbeth and LS Audio.  From the reviews we have read, Hegel has been partnered with Magnepan, Amphion, Dynaudios, etc. to good effect.  :)

Hi-Fi + Calls Hegel H80 Excellent!

Excerpt from the Hi-Fi + Review (Last two paragraphs)

"I play a little game with myself during reviews. Where possible, I try to avoid discovering the price of a product until the end of the review, and I see if I can guess correctly. Usually, I’m in the right ball-park. With the H80, I got this spectacularly wrong. I put this at about the £5,000+ mark, in among some serious top-end integrated amp peers. It’s why I happily drove this amp through a pair of Raidho D1, completely unconscious of just how much of a ‘mullet’ system I had created in the process. The thing is though, the H80 is so ‘right’ sounding, with such good bass control and so much in its favour with such a partnership, it seemed the most natural thing to put this little amp with a pair of speakers that cost more than 10x as much. I can’t think of a higher recommendation than that.

Hegel is one of those brands that deserve to be better known. Products like the H80 make all the right noises and tick all the right boxes for a ‘now’ product. It’s a well-built, deceptively powerful amplifier with an excellent digital audio stage. ‘It fights above its weight’ is a cliché of the highest order, but it really applies here. Excellent! "

The Hegel H80 Continues to Impress....

Here is an excerpt from Stereolife's review:

"At the beginning, I’ve tested the H80 as a normal integrated amplifier with the Naim CD 5XS as a source. After listening to it for five minutes, then fifteen minutes, two hours, the conclusion was simple - this amp rocks! It is clearly one of the most interesting amplifiers in its price range. Even if we forget about the presence of the DAC. Such performance could be expected from a much more expensive device. Dynamics, energy and the control over the whole sound could be associated with huge integrated amps with heatsinks on the sides and transformers the diameter of a medium-sized pizza. But this one looks like a normal amplifier, it’s very inconspicuous. If there was a big black curtain in the front of the system and I had to guess what kind of amplifier was playing at the moment, I would say that it was something similar to cheaper integrated models of Krell or McIntosh. Maybe a respectable pre/power combination of Atoll or Audiolab as well. It's not just that you can organize a big party with the H80 and fill the large room with sound without problems"

Here is the complete review: http://www.stereolife.eu/archive/reviews-list/944-hegel-h80 (http://www.stereolife.eu/archive/reviews-list/944-hegel-h80)

What's impressive is also AA's special price for the H80 :D

Here are my impressions for Hegel H80, got it 3rd week of Feb. Played it with AC Melody 103 (ribbon tweeter) and Marantz cd6004.

I was listening to Ella Fitzgerald last Wednesday night, 1 hour span:  the instruments are more pronounced, the SQ is more life like meaning as if the musicians were transported into my listening room.

Listening to Fra Lippo Lippi and Bass Sounds last night, 1 hour span. At the modest volume of 58/99, the hanging wooden carvings in the room were shaking against the wall, bass was tight. It was the first time I was hearing different kinds of bass.  Also, parang mas high def sya.

Per brochure, sound gets better after 1 hour of listening,  I have not exceeded yet the 1 hour warming period per listening session.

In summary:

 - instruments are more pronounced without drowning the singer
 - voice is superb, high def ang dating
 - SQ is punchy, round, tight and fast
 - SQ is totally at a different level

My experience so far matches with the reviews and awards for this unit in the net.

Hegel H-80 rocks!

Just sharing.

Luis (PS. in the coming days, will try to play it with Xavian Piccola)

 :)

Hegel E80 goes Green!

Scandinavians are known for their love of environment and eco solutions, but audiophile amplifiers managed to resist this trend so far. Hegel wants to break it by introducing the integrated amplifier which is not only kind to the environment, but doesn't need electricity at all. That's why the E80 has no power socket on the back panel. Instead of forcing audiophiles to use the current from the wall, engineers have developed a battery power system which allows the amplifier to work at normal volume almost constantly. Instead of a toroidal transformer, there is a battery pack inside the E80, similar to the latest generation lithium-ion cells used in hybrid drive cars. To make sure the power doesn't run out quickly, engineers from Norway developed an innovative system for charging the batteries using the audio signal applied to either the analog or digital input. If you decide to listen to the music via the USB port, the amplifier will simply use the electricity from this socket. When there is no digital connection, new Hegel will activate the PowerLoop system, which works similarly to the power distribution unit, where one plug is transformed into several outlet sockets delivering the same amount of power. The original signal goes straight to the preamp section, while those obtained by multiplication are processed and used to charge the batteries. However, the main source of energy keeping the E80 alive is a solution called KineticDrive. It is a system that enables recovering energy from the return movement of membranes in the speakers. This unique solution was inspired by the KERS system used in F1 and automotive brake energy recovery systems. The secret lies in the fact that the new amplifier doesn't drive loudspeakers in a continuous manner. Instead, it sends impulses to force vibrations. Returning membranes induce current in the coils, which is then received at the speaker terminals of the amplifier and used to charge batteries. Apart from this, E80 is very similar to the H80 model. It has an identical housing and high-end DAC on-board. To emphasize the ecological character of the new amplifier, a green display was used instead of a blue one. The same color decorates the speaker terminals and analog inputs on the rear panel. What's interesting is that the new Hegel doesn't come with a remote control. That's because the batteries are charged also when you use any of the knobs on the front panel, to change the source or adjust the volume. The official release date of the E80 is not known yet, however it is anticipated to cost almost twice as much as the H80. A good investment, especially if you consider the rising prices of electricity.

Got the Hegel H80 4 hours ago. So far, given the very short burn in time, SQ is very promising. Using the coaxial input at this time.  Speakers being used are Amphion Ion+.  Obvious now is the amp has no digital harshness.  Thanks Epoy

Insan,

Thank you.  Obviously enjoying the burning in stage.  Also trying to see differences in SQ of the various analog and digital inputs which is proving to be difficult.....maganda kasi lahat.

Comparing H80 to Nuforce DDA 100....obvious difference is bass of former.

My H80 has about 200 hours on it.  You are so right that SQ has gotten better since day 1. I have used it on the dynes and amphion, rated at 4 ohms 88db and 8 ohms 86 db respectively.  No issue in driving them.  Compared internal dac of H80 with Benchmark Dac1....could not tell any SQ difference. For the AA price on H80 and its performance, best value for one's hard earned audio money.

"It comes across as a low noise, low distortion, high transparency, high grip amplifier that can be considered a steal for the money. You could go down a separates route for the same price, but you’d need to spend a fair chunk of the budget on quality interconnects and power cables and even then I’m not sure you’d approach this level of joined-up music making"

Hi Epoy

Ever since I got the H 80 from you nine months ago, I have not used my tube system. Last night, I compared the SQ of the H80 versus my tube preamp and tube amp.   Sources used were CDP and Spotify running thru Bluesound Node.  An external DAC was used for both sources.

IMHO, very little discernible SQ difference between the H80 and the tube system.

So for now, tube system in hibernation and may come back to life during cold nights for the warmth of tubes.

Hegel HD12 Review

"In my experience, this level of musical engagement is virtually impossible to find in any other DAC I've heard for this low an investment. Hegel has elevated the bar here as this is one exceedingly musical DAC for the asking price....Hegel, my check is on its way. I'm buyin' this one!"
