Title: Re: tt advice
Post by: Dollarman on Jun 27, 2013 at 10:30 PM
Question lang sana sa mga tt users here. Just hooked up my first TT to my 818 via its phono in. Using Direct mode to listen to it. My question is audio seems lower when compared to using the 818 for movies or usb flac playback. Right now its at -20db when normally at -32 malakas na for movies... Am i doing something wrong here?

Sir what cart are you using mm or mc? Low output or high output?
Title: Re: TT first time setup
Post by: resident_evil on Jun 27, 2013 at 10:41 PM
Mangboy is right. Depends on your cartridge and phono preamp. If it is MM, check that it is properly installed. If its a low output MC, you might need a step up transformer.

In my experience, phono usually has a lower gain than cd.

pangit talaga phono ng onkyo avr. marantz avr lang ang decent. just buy a dedicated int amp for your tt boss.

I agree especially if you don't use a dedicated outboard phono preamp.

Post by: mangboy on Jun 27, 2013 at 10:47 PM
Nothing wrong sir talaga lang mahirap i drive ang TT except high output cart but usually ako din using my power/preamp pag disc 10 o clock lang nasigaw na pero pag phono ang 10 o clock bitin na bitin pa sabi nila it is because of the cartridge amplification just imagine tiny needle transduce sound from vinyl going to your amp the going again to speaker parang you need more power to make it loud because of the process IMO. Iam sure a lot TT expert here can explain the science he he he.....

From a newbie experience Amx pre-amp with Tube AMP for Phono Stage with both MM and MC inputs.
Each change of tube feels like you have a new system, whereas on Digital you need to change the whole phone -amp. Now using Tesla ECC803S with Gold pins, bilog sound with Tube sweetness.

With the AMX pre-amp you can use the Direct Audio feature of the Onkyo as power amp until the desire drives you to get a full pledge power amp. Analogue is just much sweeter than Digital.

Onkyo 818 Warm + RTIA3 Bright = Neutral/Balanced
If you find the System too bright with the stock tubes of the Project then Sylvania 12AX7 has proven to be neutral. As master dodie has stated:

tube roll  lang chief katapat nyan. may matalas, may neutral, may lubog, may pangit, pili ka lang ng sakto sa panlasa mo.

That is the beauty of a Tube system. Trial and Error but the experience is a priceless adventure.

Just an update:

The Project phono stage from brader resident_evil has arrived! I was hoping it will arrive after lunch while the big boss was out. Well, it arrived while we were having lunch... :P

Heavy workload kept me from immediately opening the box and couldnt wait after dinner to finally open it . Didnt expect it to be this small and definitely didnt expect it to look as good and as new. After powering it up and playing the first notes from a lp, i had to turn down my amp's volume to like 8'oclock.  Before it was at 11'oclock and barely hearing details..

Now i cant stop playing my lps hoping to break in sooner the rp1..
Again many thanks to braders resident_evil and king dodie!  ^-^

I took a closer look and its not the ortofon om5e that came with the rp1 but a rega carbon cart.
Couldnt find much info about it and was wondering if i should still wait for it to break in or just get another cart..
and where can i get a stylus weight scale?

chief, i assume that the na yung lp ay maalikabok lang, then bulak saka konting distilled water lang. pahid mo in circular motion. o kya kung dry cleaning, micro fiber cloth lang gamit ko ska yung lp brush. madaming brand yung brush, merong thorens, audio technica etc etc. meron sa mp akong nakita ah.

Di ba magasgas using fiber cloth chief?? The lps are clean naman except for bits of dust na dumikit because of static. Yun bulak pwede ba yan for dry cleaning? Type ko si brush no 3 anti static.

May nakita ako sa mp. Brush na lalagyan ng liquid sa brush handle, ok ba yan?

yun chief, audio technica yata yun. its good. hindi naman sya magagasgas using fiber cloth basta circular lang ang motion. pag rcm nga gamit chief literally your washing and brushing the lp with force para matangal yung mga nakasingit na dumi eh.

Last question for tonight chief gusto ko sanang isama sub ko when listening to lps. Pwede ko kaya gamitan ng Y connector from the phono stage? One going to the 818 for the sub and the second set to the int. amp?

Up to you bro. At the end of the day use whatever setting is pleasing to your ears. As far as isolation is concerned, try mo muna ilayo sa speakers your TT. Try not to place it on the floor especially if your floor is wooden. No need to spend a lot on isolation I think.

Top of the line model ng SL1200/1210 series yan sir. But if yu don't need the extra features like the extra pitch range & digital pitch control, then just go for MK2, MK3D/M3D or MK5. To me, the MK3D/M3D is still the best. I had so many SL1200 variant that come & go but the ones I kept are the pair of MK3D.

The only difference of MK3D from the M3D is the voltage. MK3D is 100v because it's a Japan-only released model just like the other variants such are the MK3, MK4 & MK5G, all of which are also 100v.

Hope this helps. :)

medyo kulang sya sa bass.  I tried adding a sub in the mix but lost a lot of clarity. Gamit ko kasi line in and out ng sub.

for me one of the best add ons to my Rega TT is the Q Up. It has no effect on sound quality but it will save you from getting up to lift the tonearm every time a side ends. it will also save your cart.

Yaqin hybrid and rtia3s. I tried connecting galing project to my sub line in and then to the yaqin. I got the bass but lost the clarity. And closing the lid on the rp1 i can hear the sound amplified sa sub.

Use the protractor that came with the TT for alignment. follow the VTF recommended by the manufacturer of the cart. after burn in, I adjust pa konti konti until I get the sound that I like. One cheap isolation trick that some people use is to mount their turntables on the wall instead of placing them on the audio rack. try it if you really think isolation could be an issue.

Anong turntable ang bang for the buck mga sir? start muna tayo sa medyo budget friendly (vintage turntable included)

Rega RP3 yata saka Technics SL1200.

Yan din ang natitipuhan ko Technics SL1200 MKII, been reading a lot of good feedback about it. Madali bang humanap dito sa atin nito? Ok lang ba kahit ginamit sa "DJ-ing"?

Sir Dodie, is the sound of the compilation Album comparable to the individual albums per artist?

depende chief sa nag compile. yung mga readers digest na compilation, karamihan di maganda. ktel na label, generally sub par. yung hits compilation is cbs/wea and its good. the NOW compilation is virgin/emi and equally good too. :)

Meron kasi recommended tracking force para sa mga cart. I think you'll get the best sound if you are within the recommended tracking force. Tama ba boss dodie?

@deist, one thing I failed to consider a few years back when I went back to Analogue was that that sweet sound of vinyl makes me relax then fall asleep. I chose a Manual TT then, and when I fall asleep I am awakened by the sound of the stylus scratching the vinyl record.

Eventually I moved to an automatic system to avoid damaging more records. Luckily I came across a Vintage Benjamin Miracord Elac 50 that was automatic. Hope this helps.

pag medyo lutang yung stylus baka hindi ganun kaganda yung extraction chief. nung una ako manong, tatlong setting, lyt muna tapos salang plaka..tapos moderate force, tapos salang plaka, tapos heavy, tapos testing. then will decide whats best for me.....

Kasi 90% of them are really used for DJing. Although pwede naman i-restore to factory setting kung kailangan.

The original SL1200 was released in 1972. It was made as a home/hifi turntable by Matsushi Elec Co, the parent company of Panasonic & Technics. It had a strong brushless direct drive motor and accurate pitch control (knob type). In 1978, they released the Technics SL1200 MK2 and like the original SL1200, it was also designed as a home/hifi turntable. It was quickly discovered by DJs that using a turntable with a slider type of pitch control for mixing purposes is much, much better and more accurate than the knobs/roller types. The tonearm assembly had a newer design for better tracking, float and swivel. Since then more and more DJs started using it until it became a standard equipment for clubs, discos, house DJs, hiphop DJs, radio stations, studios, etc and the rest is history. Plus the start/stop button and pop-up target lamp features were also very useful when cueing a song/track.

Although the SL1200 has been discontinued, it still holds the "king of DJ tunrtables" title. Parts are still available because there are more than 3 million units sold worldwide.

:)

@deist, the rp1 actually sounds good except for the lack of bass which i now believe is because of the rtia3s im using. I tried again hooking up my sub and this time using rca y connectors instead of using the in/out rca of the sub. This time it sounded the way i wanted it to be.

Just one concern is when i turn on the project i get this thump from the sub...

Post by: resident_evil on Jul 24, 2013 at 01:46 AM
that happens to me also and when i turn it off. pero what i do now is i turn off my preamp first then turn off the phono stage then turn off the amp. dati if i turn it off before i turn off the preamp may thud. i suggest you turn off the sub first.

chief dapat talaga when turning on.....preamp-sources-power amp and when turning off should bE the opposite. This prevents potential transient spikes from the preamp or sources from being amplified and sent to the speakers.

ganyan din pag turn on ko chief pre amp/phono stage then source then power amp. problem is sa phono stage palang may thump na sa sub. and eto pa na notice ko when i turn off the volume sa amp i can hear the music over the sub.  :o :o

here is my connection:
rp1-->project tube box-->rca splitter-->sb12

@dollarman, as a previous owner of the RTia3 I would say the model is capable of providing decent bass. My opinion is the bass is defeated by the Chinese tubes in the Yaqin AMP. A change to NOS tubes may be very helpful to achieve decent Bass without a Subwoofer. IMHO.
