Title: Minix Neo X7
Post by: DTNS on Sep 20, 2013 at 08:08 PM
saw this new product listed at Villman:
http://www.villman.com/Product-Detail/MiniX_Neo_x7 (http://www.villman.com/Product-Detail/MiniX_Neo_x7)

it looks like a promising upgrade to the Minix Neo X5. its more expensive than the X5 though.  :-\

Pa mini review naman, bro jackryan. Sa Amazon kasi, the reviews say that it's "buggy".

bros, don't expect anything fancy...

here's the disclosure, i got a number of NMT players and may be I should take photos of them over the weekend... recently,  my baseline standard is the android based player called "Hi Media" China made player.

Anyway, I find the Neo X7 to run cooler than above... but does not seem to offer me anything extra versus the Neo X5.

I installed the MX Player by downloading it from the Google Playstore. It's wonderful and gives me the easy slider controller to the movies I get to watch.

The good thing about the X7 just like the X5, runs very cool. It has built-in wifi-N support and comes with its own antenna. It has the usual ports but I hate the small almost non-functional remote controller --- you gotta ditch for something else...

that stated, if you already have the Neo X5, then not really a lot of reason to upgrade to Neo X7.

Can you install Hola Unblocker on it and watch Netflix, Hulu, and the like without a hitch.

I now watch Netflix and Hulu on my laptop and watch downloaded movies on my NMT. Would love to combine the 2 functions in 1 device

Post by: flashDB on Oct 24, 2013 at 03:26 PM
finally got one!  i'm very satisfied.  some minor complains

 - slow startup, once it's up ok na.

 - control, android was designed for handset and particularly touchscreen.  you can navigate using usb keyboard or mouse.  use bluetooth keyboard/mouse or get their "air mouse" (A1 or A2 models).  some says you can use apple's magic touchpad.

is it stable?  yes out of the box. once you put an app that might not be well written causes instability.  like any app installed on android phone.

i only installed essential for media files. no games or whatsoever.  mx player does the job!  i'll add more info as soon as i explored it further.

Ever since I loaded the Archos video player app into our Android devices,  I've been looking for an Android based NMT to run it on.

What I like most is that it automatically does what I have had to do manually on other NMTs,  saving hours of time. The user interface is also nice and sufficiently extensive.  Over the years,  we've used Measy,  XTreamer and Mede8er. We've also tried XMBC on a PC.  The Archos app,  IMHO,  is most the convenient.

The Minix Neo X7 so far seems to be a suitable platform to run the Archos app on.  It does come with its own media player app but I like the Archos app which costs about P250.  There is a free version though.

The only thing is the X7 will not take an internal disk,  and the USB is only version 2.0.  We use a NAS so this is really not an issue for me.

The Archos app has a companion app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.m4rk3t.libcopy2&hl=en which installs all sorts of codecs. Funny thing is I can't seem to find the list of codecs.  It does seem to support DTS and DD.

Post by: lncc63 on Dec 25, 2013 at 07:03 PM
I spoke too soon.  The Minix Neo X7 is not as mature as other NMTs.  I think the Archos video player is also lacking.

First of all, the X7 can only produce progressive scan outputs (i.e. 480p, 720p, 1080p). This means that if your system is a 1080i system then the X7 will convert it down to 720p even if your file is 1080p to begin with.  Our projector is still 1080i, even though the rest of the system is 1080p, so I've been looking at 720p ... upgrade?! ... but still good enough.  I suspect this is a limitation of the hardware so it may not be fixed with a firmware upgrade.

Sound for me is actually more important that the screen resolution so the next problem was the "deal breaker".  It seems that the X7 cannot output 5.1 or higher, at least through the HDMI port, I did not try the optical port.  Its sound subsystem does have several options including a "passthrough" option which passes the decoding job to the next device which in our case is a Yamaha RX-V3800, but according the 3800 only a stereo signal was getting to it.  I though it might be my Archos application however after trying VLC and the native player with no luck, I have to guess it is a problem with the firmware or the hardware.

Am downloading a custom firmware now and will try again.

This is disappointing because the quad core performance is very refreshing compared to that of our Mede8er 500X2 (I think), but ...
Title: Re: Minix Neo X7
Post by: flashDB on Dec 28, 2013 at 06:59 PM
did you try changing the settings?  settings > sound > sound device manager > pass through ?

i just finished testing it.  nung una taka ko bakit nakalagay sa display ng receiver PCM 2 ch. after ko palitan pass through umayos.

add/edit: minix x7 isn't perfect pero sobrang sulit. im getting more what i paid for in my opinion. i do miracast, DLNA, music player, youtube (vimeo, ustream, etc.), at marami pang iba.

eto panget: yun stock remote. kung basic lang pwede mag tyaga.   best is wireless keyboard/mouse. may app to use your phone/tablet as remote pero feeling ko kulang parin.

sir @flashDB, and other masters/experts here......newbie lang po ako....I noticed na me OTA upgrade na ang MINIX V7 natin...but I have not tried it yet...I'm still using the firmware update na 008 yung lumabas last 1.1.2013.....when I browsed the minix forum...I notice na me Modified FW created by a certain @HardwareGuru....from the way I understand his modified FW, though not official, does not require rooting the device and that it does not use "overlay" technique to get a 1080p....but rather he claim that it is a true 1080p thus smooth yung movies, etc...ito yung link.. http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?10061-HardwareGuru-Rom-03-Firmware-for-Neo-X7....have anyone of you tried this???

audio pass-through works. just change it in the settings.

1TB + 4GB USB + microSD + wireless dongle.  so far no issues naman.

im using mx player.  dont waste time on xbmc kasi hindi pa perfect.  pwede naman pagtiisan pero why bother.

es explorer + mx player = solve!  just enable the pass through incase you want to get Dolby and DTS via receiver.

dont upgrade yet to 009 firmware kasi unfinished pa yan. working but some bugs. pinaka stable daw yun 005 (where i started) and 006c (as per reviews sa forum)

The above is the free version, which I am using since satisfied naman ako....sa codecs nya, meron audio file (.ac3 something) na hindi nya ma-play....just try it yourself......and tell us your thoughts about it....btw, if you like subtitles and there is none in your video file downloaded, sa archos app meron syang options to download them, which is very helpful for me since I like subtitles...

update lang sa Minix 7 ko....I have installed the firmware created by HardwareGuru Rom 3 please link: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?10061-HardwareGuru-Rom-03-Firmware-for-Neo-X7

It is not rooted, so hindi maka void ng warranty....1080p full sya and therefor not using "overlay" technique of the Official Minix FW...tweaked the RAM, that is according to the thread cited above...noticeable ang speed nya....so far after about a week observing the Minix X7 with the HardwareGuru Rom...it is very stable and fast than the Official FM ng Minix. Note the latest FW of Minix (the one which can be obtained thru OTA) has some reported bugs since minadali yan before the holidays in HK and Minix will be fixing it after the said holidays...

Those planning to buy the Minix X7-mini, Minix X5, and Minix X5-mini...better think twice...maraming nag-complain dahil mabagal ang updates nila compared to our Minix X7...caveat....

Just to update....there is now a newly released firmware created by HardwareGuru Rom 4, the successor of the one I previously posted, just click the link if interested: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?11045-HardwareGuru-Rom-04-Firmware-for-Neo-X7

Just like Rom 3, the firmware does not need to unroot the Minix X7, so it does not void the warranty....I have not tested it...but I will start downloading it soon and share my inputs...

By the way, I never had any issue with Rom 3 and Minix X7 runs smoothly with that firmware so I expect the same thing with Rom 4...unlike the official Rom of Minix which used "overlay" method to obtain 1080p (so basically it is based on 720p), the HardwareGuru Roms 3 and 4 are 1080p full....

"EDIT: XBMC loaded with rom dosent do HDMI! - just install a "libmedia Hack" version and all is good, have justXBMCv4 with 1080P and DD/DTS 5.1 running now.

This might help some:

If you cannot get your PC to recognize the Minix device, try setting the "SUPPORTLOWUSB" option to TRUE in the RKBatchTool's config file.

Has anyone tried the "MINIX Metro launcher" for Minix X7? It is official since it is created by the developer of Minix click here: http://www.minixforums.com/threads/minix-metro-launcher-evaluation-build.4327/

I am satisfied with my HardwareGuru Rom 03 but I am tempted to have an appearance of a Windows 8.1.....hehehe

At "NO AUDIO" coming from earphone jack, wala kasi earphone jack ang xtreamer. PERO NA SOLVE ko ito by flashing the new beta firmware from minix version 10 http://www.minixforums.com/threads/neo-x7-pre-010-firmware-march-2014.4494/ just follow the minix installation instructions, copy the update.zip file to your minix (device) sdcard using any file explorer, minix will automatically detect the update file just click install. Then here is the weird thing, after the installation (100% progress bar) you will be stuck in recovery mode just navigate and select "back" option until minix reboots itself. You will notice na wala na yung xtreamer boot animation, it will be replaced by minix animation and you will get a "Firmware Update Failed" message (ignore it) and delete the update.zip file from your device sdcard. So, parang na overwrite lang yung ibang files like buildprop and audio files kaya na fix yung no audio from earphone jack, pero yung full xtreamer UI and Apps Drawer still remain. -- USE the original minix remote to select and navigate inside xtreamer recovery mode.

=== pag hindi mo nagustohan, you can always go back to stock using RKBatchTool or custom rom using RKAndroidTool ===

When you say rooted firmware yung xtreamer does it mean rooted na rin yung minix x7?

Sige forget the "no audio" fix, sa xtreamer muna tayo.

Note:

Hit the "RESTORE" button to flash the xtreamer firmware not the "update" button.

Video Tutorial:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbGp8WL4vu4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbGp8WL4vu4)

2.Since rooted na nga ito, you can now use the RKAndroidTool to try and flash different 1080p kernels, Open the RKAndroidTool and uncheck all the items (addresses) except item number 4 which is the address for the kernel (since kernel lang ang kailangan). Hit Run and you are done!

Sample Picture: (Click the small "blue" box at the right side of the panel to select your kernel image and hit "Run" to flash the kernel image)
(http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y505/eyeyousee/Minix%20Neo%20X7/kernelflash_zps9ca6f789.png) (http://s1278.photobucket.com/user/eyeyousee/media/Minix%20Neo%20X7/kernelflash_zps9ca6f789.png.html)

===for additional info only===
nang i-update ko yung xtreamer ko to minix beta10 to fix (earphone) audio, nawala ang root nang device (According to Antutu).

===== Don't worry the only way you can brick your device is by power failure and flashing a firmware that is meant for a different chipset! ==== pero try it at your own risk!

Kailangan rooted ang firmware kasi, gagamit ka nang 3rd party app yung "Sixaxis Controller" (requires root permission) ito gagamitin mo for pairing the ps3 controller to minix (via OTG and then wireless) maraming how to videos sa youtube.

One thing you can try is, kung meron kang android phone, turn on your phone's bluetooth and search for devices, pag nakita nang phone mo yung keyboard mo as "input" I'm sure gagana yan sa minix, same thing lang sa ps3 console mo.

To those who are still owning and using this, Minix Neo X7, I have one question: Would our media player (NMT) play MKV H.265 files? If so, is there a specific software/app I should use? I tried the usual apps like MX Player and AC3 Player, yet they are not supported....Pls help. Tnx

No, it won't play h.265 files.  It doesn't have the CPU horsepower.  You will need to get the U1 to be able to play h.265 files.
