The new series will give writers the freedom to develop characters, locations, and storylines without concern that viewers will guess or have expectations for certain plot lines based on what has already happened in the "Walking Dead" graphic novel series.
The new series could be set in a different time frame, several years down the road (in a post-post-apocalyptic world?); or maybe it'll be a prequel, with specifics on how the zombified world came to be. Maybe, a la "World War Z," it will tell the survival stories of various groups of people, from various parts of the country/world?

Like Telltale Games' award-winning adventure game, the untitled TV sidequel will follow another group of strangers thrown together by the zombie apocalypse and forced to rely on each other to survive. It seems designed to answer viewers' questions about what's happening elsewhere in the world beyond what we see on the original show. One rumor suggests that it might be set a little earlier in the timeline, possibly even following the drama of the zombie infection's origins at the CDC and their (obviously failed) efforts to contain it.

Hopefully it will be in a more urban setting, like Los Angeles, Chicago, or even Boston. I'm sick of southern locales with small towns surrounded by forests, heh

Cliff Curtis has been cast as the male lead in The Walking Dead companion series for AMC. A New Zealand actor of Maori descent, Curtis was previously seen on the TV series Missing and Gang Related.
In the companion series, now code-named Cobalt, Curtis plays a divorced teacher who joins up with a female guidance counselor and her two children as the zombie apocalypse hits, taking place in the same world as The Walking Dead series but at a much farther, more urban location.
Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm) will play the children of the female guidance counselor, who will be played by Kim Dickens.

Cliff Curtis is a great pick ...... has always been underrated, but makes his small roles count.
I completely agree that this spinoff would give freedom to the writers / producers ...... free from the burden when your show parallels a well-followed graphic novel.

Aside from a few added characters, tweaks, side stories, etc the TV series generally follows the graphic novel.
What I meant by being free of the burden, writers now can create from the ground up.
Not that its a bad thing, but TWD people are being pestered by followers of the novel so much ex. Speculation that the big guy in the Terminus boxcar was Negan.
Indeed, if this can be a quick series like the 1st season of TWD ...... more power to it.

Robert Kirkman explains how the companion show is different from the main series:
"From the beginning of the show one thing we've heard is, 'What's going on over here or there.' So the intent of the new show is to expand that world and show another corner of the United States and what's happening there. The timeline is taking place a little bit earlier timeframe than the original show. Rick Grimes woke up from a coma and was like, 'Oh, man, zombies, weird!' We're going to possibly see that unfold a little more in the other show. But I wouldn't call it 'prequel' because the entirety of the show is not going take place before [The Walking Dead]. It will eventually form a path running concurrently."
Also:
"One thing that we're doing with the new show that we're trying with everything is it's not derivative," he said. "It's standing on its own. You can watch it by itself and get your own experience. But if you are watching both shows there are things like, 'Oh they discovered this, or they discovered that in a different way.' There are a lot of things about The Walking Dead world these characters have to learn or figure out to get by. And there may be some things that are discovered in the companion show that haven't been discovered in the other show yet. So there could be like a thing where, 'Oh, they encountered a zombie in season 4 in The Walking Dead that could do this and now we know why that was.' So we're going to be doing things like that are going to be pretty cool, but for the most part [the two shows] should be able to stand alone."

What I'm really looking forward to seeing in this companion series is the start of the pandemic, and how the general public and government attempt to deal with it...something like the scenes shown at the start of World War Z and the prologue of The Last of Us (PS3 game). In the main series, we didn't get to see this because when Rick woke up, some considerable time has passed since the sh!t hit the fan.

This is always a problem with too many characters, as they have to be established in the pilot. Unfortunately, since the setting is L.A., they had to focus on most of the plot from the junkie son.
And we even haven't met most of the guy's original family yet, which includes the great Latino musician Ruben Blades--hopefully his presence will redeem this show somewhat.

The acting of the young actor annoyed me for whatever reason. Finally something happened in the ending! That was a pretty slow opener.

Yup. It takes a few minutes like before they reanimate. First ep was quite good. I watched it with skepticism. But this has a new angle. A sense of disbelief. It will be a good warm up for the Walking Dead.

It was airborne from the beginning. Di lang na experience ng characters ng TWD to see somebody died from none zombie bite to reannimate. Napansin lang nila later on when they are checking some dead zombie without bite marks.

I saw no indication of the virus being airborne. Perhaps people mean getting infected without being bitten. There are other ways to get it other than through the air. What was established in the Walking Dead was they were all infected bitten or not.

Looks like 6 episodes were ordered for this show. It is a good primer for The Walking Dead.

Robert Kirkman has repeatedly stated that he will never reveal how the virus originated, so all we'll be getting in this spinoff is the chaos that happens during the outbreak. Which is fine by me, because it heightens the fear and uncertainly in the show.
From the original series, the CDC doctor at the end of episode 6 in Season 1 whispered to Rick that "It's in your blood. We're all carriers" and Kirkman has written this in the comic books, which he states applies to the TV series as well:
"The rule is WHATEVER it is that causes the zombies, is something everyone already has. If you stub your toe, get an infection and die, you turn into a zombie, UNLESS your brain is damaged. If someone shoots you in the head and you die, you're dead. A zombie bite kills you because of infection, or blood loss, not because of the zombie 'virus.'"
So death triggers the reanimation into zombies; a bite just makes the process faster.

I'm fine not knowing what caused it. It is not central to the adventure. If it were, we'll be in for a wild spin like LOST. I hate watching something waiting for that thing that will only come at the last show.

the last episode (2) kinda hinted on this. there was a scene where an airplane was shown flying above.

another very good episode. brings back some of the excitement lost on the original series. sa original kasi they have to make things over the top at times dahil common place na ang zombies and patayan. dito mejo "innocent" pa ang characters kaya konting kaluskos lang takot ka na.

Yeah, but they were initially smart enough close the doors and the curtains, and they did see their neighbor attacking their other neighbors. Then all of a sudden they forgot to close the damn sliding doors! But yeah, it did add to the element of suspense of the show, so all is forgiven. :D

For dog-lovers like me, the answer would be yes. :)
Just like the Clarks, I'd definitely bring the dog in; it appeared to need help, and it's a big dog, surely it can protect them if the need arises. Remember, they don't know anything about walkers at this point ... Robert Kirkman stated that in the world where the two TV shows take place, the George Romero zombie movies don't exist, so people don't know what a zombie is, that sound attracts them, that you have to avoid their bites, shoot them in the head, and so on.
That's the best thing about this show, everything about the walkers is still a big unknown to the characters--they don't really know what they're dealing with.

Finally caught up to Ep5. Panalo itong series. Agree ako sa inyo. Dami kong "ampucha naman ang tatanga niyo!" But yeah, they didn't know things and weren't thinking straight yet. This naivety is what makes this show different from TWD.
Yung dog, classic ha ha. Of course tumatahol ang dog. Toink. Gusto ko sila pagsasampalin ha ha.

Over the course of the series, the plane and the lives of its passengers are put in jeopardy once they discover an infected traveler. The series is written by L. Signorino and Mike Zunic and directed by Fear the Walking Dead director of photography Michael McDonough.

Since yung plot early in the saga, gusto ko makakita ng kids and baby zombies. They also die so it makes sense to have them reanimate. That will be new to me. I haven't read any book so kung mayroon man please do not spoil it muna he he.

New Zealand actress Michelle Ang, who portrayed Alex in the webisodic Fear The Walking Dead: Flight 462 series, will join the regular cast of Fear The Walking Dead this season. In the final episode of the Flight 462 webseries, Alex is shown along with the other passengers strapped to their seats and bracing themselves as the plane begins to crash. Alex was spotted fighting along the regular cast members during a Fear The Walking Dead promo shown earlier this month, and is set to appear in the third episode this season.

What was interesting in this episode was the revelation on what happened to the other cities--aside from San Diego to the south, other coastal cities to the north like Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon and even Vancouver, Canada were similarly bombed by the military; in fact, the areas to the west of the Continental Divide have all fallen.
Also intriguing was Victor's hidden map that Daniel found--seems he was originally headed for Mexico, which sealed its border with the USA when the outbreak hit.

Atlanta, in the 5th episode of Season 1--they showed airstrikes flying over the city and deploying napalm charges. The entire city wasn't destroyed though, as we see it several seasons later when Carol and Daryl return there to rescue Beth in the hospital.

I thought it was a pretty good episode, and brought the kids face to face with the reality of the zombie apocalypse without their parents around to protect them this time. Nick makes an important discovery about walker blood after he saves the others, and Daniel is the worst babysitter ever, LOL.
I actually like the slow burn of this series better than the main Walking Dead show, whose storylines are basically locked to the comic books. This show is new territory in Kirkman's universe, and that's why I prefer it despite its uninteresting characters.

Another thing that bothered me was why was the Asian chick mad at Travis? Wasn't it clear that he was saving them by suggesting that they be towed? It was also obvious that it was Victor who chopped the rope.

Also, that mexican guy who looks like a slimmer Jack Black is a good sniper, so why didn't they use him to keep an eye out for them during the exchange?
According to some of the actors, a scene showing Alex freeing Alicia from the kitchen where she was locked in by that pregnant girl was cut from the episode.

Interesting episode, but the bad writing continues -- how did Daniel know that the parishioners were poisoned--is he psychic? And what was all that nonsense about the owls?
I guess the priest and the parishioners were referring to Celia when they were preparing to fight during the opening sequence.
And they should just dump that teenage psychopath Chris into the wine cellar with all the other zombies.

Yes, Daniel's conclusion when he saw the communion wafers was a stretch. During the first part when the parishoners bled I was surprised. Those weren't the virus' symptoms.

Did they just kill off Daniel in that truly awful midseason finale? If they were trying to emulate Hershel's farm being destroyed and everyone splitting off into several groups, they failed badly.
They really should change the writers of this show--everyone seems off in terms of character, and I couldn't understand why Daniel turned crazy in the space of two episodes. Only Victor and Madison seem like the only ones with some common sense left. Hopefully they kill off Travis and his psychotic son Chris too.
Fear The Walking Dead's second half of Season 2 will return in August.

All the mayhem caused by the Travis clan achieved nothing. In the end, they left, possibly died, and split up anyway. So my conclusion was they should have left Celia and the compound as is. Had they taken over the facilities, it would have been worthwhile.

I was also rooting for Travis when he unleashed his righteous indignation on those 2 a$$holes, but then again he also hit Oscar, which was really stupid of him.
That 2-hour season finale was a bit satisfying for this lackluster season. Good to know they're still focusing on Ofelia, and I think she will be reunited with Nick next season, along with the rest of the family. I'm sticking around, because there's still an unknown element here as compared to the main Walking Dead series, which has all its main plotlines already laid out from the comics. And it's still 2010 in this show--around Day 36 since the outbreak, and Rick Grimes is still in a coma in King County, Georgia (he wakes up on Day 59).

Actually forgot that this was a 2 part finale because i was already satisfied with the death of that character.

The killing account was compelling. However it remains to be an account. What made it a compelling account was the Travis going on a murderous rampage. With all of Chris' companions dead, it made no sense for them to lie. Still...

watched the 2nd part yesterday. the ending left a big question mark on what happens next and it made me want to stick to this series until next season.

Fear the Walking Dead gets new characters in Season 3:
A new character, one whose name and the actress we are yet to learn, will take the reigns as the first female villain in the world of Fear the Walking Dead when the series returns in 2017. "There's gonna be a new prominent character, who we're gonna meet south of the border, who is going to have an impact on Nick and Luciana, and Strand most likely," says executive producer and co-creator Dave Erickson. "She will become somebody, I think, who can rival any of the powerful characters we've had on the show or will have on the show. The idea is to create opposing forces on either side of the border and see what happens when they end up in conflict and what happens if our family is on opposite sides of the conflict."
Also joining the cast of Fear the Walking Dead in Season 3 is Sons of Anarchy alum Dayton Callie, who plays Russell, a part of the north-of-the-border militia introduced in the closing moments of the show's second season as he meets Ofelia. Callie will be reunited with Kim Dickens, who he worked with on Sons of Anarchy and Deadwood.

Fear the Walking Dead: Passage is a 16-part weekly series that will air after The Walking Dead episodes and follows the same format as the previous series, Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462, with each segment only about a minute long.
The series, which will be also available online, will follow two female survivors, one of whom is injured, as they scramble to find safety in a post-apocalyptic world. It's still unknown if these two characters will cross paths with the characters of Fear the Walking Dead when the web series ends.

Since the last season of The Walking Dead was so bad, this Fear The Walking Dead is now starting to look good.

Wasn't bad, except for that new cast member who looks like a low-budget Robert Pattinson with a more punchable face--good thing Madison spooned out his eye, LOL. Hope he's zombie food soon. And the Dad is eeevill. Clark family is still annoying, though.
Good that Strand has left that boring hotel--and in style too.

Now that's what you call an explosive season finale--with most of the main cast dead or presumed missing, LOL. This season started out meh, but the second half was great and elevated it past the original series for me because of its unpredictability and the fact that the main characters are well, not really nice people, heh 😜👍

For one night only, AMC will air the season 8 finale of The Walking Dead and the Season 4 premiere of Fear The Walking Dead back to back on April 15. The event, called "Survival Sunday: The Walking Dead & Fear the Walking Dead," will highlight the "Worlds Collide" crossover between the two shows, as events on The Walking Dead season finale will lead directly to Morgan's transfer on the season premiere of Fear The Walking Dead.
The two episodes will also be screened in 750 selected theaters nationwide on the night of April 15, which will also include an extra half-hour of exclusive bonus content, making the screenings begin at 8:30 pm ET/5:30 pm PT, 30 minutes ahead of the AMC broadcast.

Just watched the season premiere; it's a very good jumping on point for those who haven't watched this series (the show also got a new logo). The new characters are nicely introduced--it's nice seeing Maggie Grace again on TV, and even Garret Dillahunt's gunslinger character makes a good first impression.
Morgan's journey from Virginia to Texas takes about several months, and while there was a clear several year gap in the timeline between TWD and FTWD, Morgan's appearance here means that the two shows now share the same timeline, and the Clarks (plus Strand) have moved from Mexico to Texas.

Medyo innovative storytelling style this season makes things interesting. I wonder though if there are other story lines outside of the "neighborhood bully" preying on the weak to get their resources. The governor, Negan and the Saviors and now the Vultures. Surely there's more to survival than this.

Yes--it's like a brand new show. While the old characters still have a back story, you don't really need to know about it, as about 2 years have passed since the S3 finale in Tijuana and how the Clarks got from there to Texas has not yet been revealed.

They conveniently forget about the tactic of using zombie blood and guts to throw off the dead when a dramatic death is needed. :)

Austin Amelio, the actor who plays Dwight on the original AMC zombie drama, is following in the footsteps of Lennie James’ Morgan by heading over to the spin-off, EW has learned.
Amelio was absent from the first half of The Walking Dead’s ninth season. When we last saw Dwight in the season 8 finale, Daryl (Norman Reedus) banished the reformed Savior from Alexandria, never to return. Now, his story continues.
