Title: SANSUI AU 111
Post by: forseti on Jul 30, 2014 at 12:45 AM
Starting this thread to know other members who currently owns the legendary Sansui AU 111 tube amplifier.

Sharing my rare Sansui AU 111 tube amp fully restored to immaculate condition. Very nice sounding for a 48 year old model 6L6 tube amplifier.

character of au111 sir compared to au9500?

AU 111 have this surprisingly deep bottom end with soul to music passages, making it very revealing to any genre being played whereas AU 9500 has the balance and transparency that you can get from most expensive amplifiers. Warm and exude with amazing detail to musical passages.

Well both AU 111 and AU 9500 are highly regarded by old and new audio enthusiast.

There was one review that says "AU 111 is considered to be one of those amplifier that you need to have if you're a serious audio collector"

my 12EN6 pp amp is very similar to the au-111 circuit which i favor a lot in my builds..

the au9500 otoh is a solid state amp...

the 6L6GC's are ussually the first ones to go, but the fact that they are
still alive is a testament to japanese quality...

Got this article about Sansui AU 111:

AU-111 was the ultimate tube amp Sansui ever produced.  This was the Sansui’s technical submit of its root transformer production.  Also, in circuit design, Sansui adopted the latest of many years of tube technology.  As the result, sonically, I don't think there is not much room to improve.

Sansui has been a company that improves its products step by step.  The early Sansui transistor amps, such as AU-999, AU-9500, AU-9900, AU-919, and AU-D11 all sounded like trying to be like tube amps, and never got there.  Sansui stated to change that from AU-D11II, AU-G99X, and AU-X701(this was AU-Alpha607 in Japan (1988)).  The high frequency of AU-X701 is so sensitive that Sansui has succeed to go to the root of tube technology; however, they were definitely weak in low compared with tube amps this is nothing more than comparison, I still like the sound of AU-G99X and AU-X701 much better compared with today's expensive transistor amps.

By knowing this Sansui tradition, the astonishing resemblance in sound between 907MR and AU-111 tells me that Sansui might have been designing its amps to reach the ultimate sonic submit they have already reached thirty years ago.  Even, they might have been using AU-111 as a reference amp for their goal. I can ask those questions to those Japanese engineers whom Mr. Motoki has introduced to me.

This suspicion also coincides with what Sansui did.  As I said, Sansui has been a company that always tried to improve the product by one step at a time.  The last high-end integrated amp Sansui ever produced was AU-111G in 2000.  This was AU-111 specifically redesigned on the pre-amp section for SACD and DVD Audio use.  By considering the Sansui tradition, if AU-111G had not sounded equal or better than AU-Alpha907NRA, they would not have introduced AU-111G.  This thought process and the result of my test also tell me that Sansui finally archived its goal before it ceased to exist in high-end audio market; to produce the ultimate transistor amp that is equal to the best tube amp Sansui ever produced.

revisions and modifications are natural course of events,

Great! You're one those lucky person to have this piece of history. Only a few na lang who have the chance to stumble owning this gem!

Make sure that your technician is a trusted one! Based on my experience not all technician can restore AU 111 because of the complexity of the design maybe. Even the knowned technician as they say here sa Pinas failed to do it for me. There's only one technician who has the vast knowledge in restoring AU 111. I can PM you his contact number.

Cheers!

as with any tube amp with output transformers,
it is the transformers that give your amp its character...
contrary to what many think that it is all about tubes...;)
tubes are easy, just get another and stick them in,
but if your OPT is not good, then matter how you
replace you tubes, wala rin... >:D

kaya ingatan nyo ang mga vintage tube amps na yan
at sikapin na hindi masira yung OPT....
operating the tube amp without speakers connected to it
will damage the OPT...damage can be cumulative...

a vintage gear that has OPT's already repaired losses its value steeply...

Mabuhay Sansuinistas from the Phils

im here in Hamburg -germany  and yesterday my Sansui AU-111 ( grabed in Japan Auction) arrived in my House after unpacking i was surprised by the good optical aperiance then i open the cover to switch the multible jumper into 220V position  ---  and and plug into an Multivolt transformer and slowly turn up to 220V,after a while did an visible tubecheck i try to get some noises out of the machine -- but the result was lausy --scratching and unwished noises on all pots and switchers so i stoped all cause was scared to destroy the speakers
Im not an specialist in audiorepair for vintage gear  and dont have all the right messearing tools  etc. so i hand over the ampy to my trusted technician Heinz who is living close to my house  he is into the business since 45 years, this morn i visited him in the workshop  and he said  its actually Junk Hhahahaha  i said its up to u to restore and make him singing again --for resonable prize  well will see what comes out cause he need doin more investigations  he told me  so have to wait what comes out attached some pics
best regards

you can start by using de-oxit contact cleaners on pots and switches,
do this while you unit is unplugged and no speakers are connected...
if you have cheap speakers, use them for testing to spare your regular speakers
from possible damage...do not give up on it just yet...

Don't despair, just be patient in finding the right guy to do the restoration. I myself before got desperate to restore my two units of AU 111, but then again because of perseverance to really bring back to life my two units of AU 111. To make the story short both of them are now singing!

Patience is a virtue as they say.

Besides it's worth restoring one the best Sansui amplifier ever made in history!

Good luck!

My take on the 111:

Prologue
I’m going that polygamous route once again.
Having Betsy as my daily driver these past months have been fun.
Betsy – My Pioneer SX650
Not much serious listening; more of a plug and play type with the iPod as source.
My toxic calendar lately just allowed a few hours of casual background music. But now that the schedule has lightened up, I have time to sit down and do some listening. . .

After reading the full rundown of your AU 111 write up and goose bump review of this gorgeous AU 111 mainstay in my system, I can really validate now and with your inspiring influence to get and source AU 111, well what can I say more but to continue praising this great tube amp ever built in audio history.

And just like you Boy, I'm a proud and satisfied owner of AU 111, by which I will continue to be proud and share the enjoyment to fellow audiophiles how great this AU 111 bring smile to my face every time I will push the legendary power button.

Wow what a great feeling indeed!
