Title: What's your digital audio set-up?
Post by: tonedeaf on Aug 24, 2014 at 10:16 AM
Since we have a "What's your analog set-up?" thread (http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,193911.0.html), I thought it would also be educational for all of us who are just thinking of going into digital audio to find out how other members have set up their digital audio system. Please indicate your source (laptop, hard disk, DAP), whether you use a DAC, the type of amp and speakers that you use. It would also be good to know what you usually play - CD quality (ripped), flac, or streaming music like Spotify, Pandora etc.

Thanks in advance.

To start, this is how I envision my set up to be initially, since I haven't really had the chance to collect digital audio files. Hopefully this will change as my collection grows.

Type of music file: streaming music from Spotify, a few ripped CDs + various mp3s etc which I've purchased from iTunes over the years
Source: Macbook air + Samsung Galaxy Note 3 + NAD 316BEE
Music player: Spotify, iTunes, Vox for my MBA, Google Music or stock music player of the Note 3, Poweramp for Note 3
DAC: Fiio E18 Kunlun, NAD DAC 1 Wireless USB (still being ordered), which will connect both my MBA and Note 3 wirelessly to my AV receiver

This will connect to my regular HT set up which consists of a Denon 1713, PSB Image B6 + C5 + Mission M30i, Velo CHT 10R

P.S.

Items in blue font are as of 31 August 2014
My review of the NAD DAC 1 Wireless USB: http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,189940.msg2163491.html#msg2163491

here are my digital audio setups:

Source: Desktop, Laptop (MSI GE620DX), Lenovo A390 (my old budget android phone)
Music Player: Youtube, pinoytuner.com/digradio (Internet radio station), FM radio app
DAC: Musiland Monitor 01

Connected to either:

my PC Audio Setup consisting of

Audioengine A2 powered speakers + SVS SB1000 subwoofer

or

my dedicated Audio setup consisting of

GoldenEar Aon 3
NAD C326BEEE

both sound awesome, but the GoldenEar + NAD combo is able to play tracks/songs that my Audioengine/SVS setup find hard to play right.  ;)

@DTNS, thanks for posting! Did you have to buy a nice sound card for your desktop, or is that taken cared of by the Musiland DAC?

the Musiland 01 IS the soundcard of my desktop. I swap it between my audio setup and desktop audio. I find it a hassle to keep on swapping DACs, so I'm in the market for a second DAC now. :)

I'm thinking of having a digital audio set up in my office.

My options are:

Option 1 - desktop/MBA + DAC + powered speaker or headphone
Option 2 - desktop/MBA + DAC + amp + passive speaker or headphone

Parang mas mahal yata option 2  ;D and I'm not sure what amp to use. Parang DAC/AMP na kaya? Hope others can chime in with their set up so I'll have more ideas.

The A2, based on reviews, sounds great. It's also got a distributor near my office so I'll try to audition :)

my htpc connected to my ht setup using the onkyo 838s dac into a nad c275 power amp into my psb imagine t's.

or my second setup in the den which has my old ivy bridge 3330 and edifier studio monitors (i hardly use this but just felt like mentioning).

i don't see the need for an external dac :).

Hp laptop using foobar2k controlled by android phone via internet. Fed into my non-oversampling dac, then goes thru the Smsl sa36a pro with audio nirvana speakers playing flac, eac, aiff, ogg, wav, ape and mp3.

Source: PC / laptop
Media: mostly mp3's and flac

For an office setup, I'd go for Option 1 without the DAC.

your office is near Greenbelt 5 or Spectra? :D   btw, you can try an SMSL amp for a budget amp for a passive speaker. it only costs 3.5k IIRC. a seller here in pdvd also sells a matching DAC.

Yup, Makati area :) I'm reading up on SMSL and other small amps, thanks, which I didn't even know existed :) I've gotten a lot of suggestions on Option 2. Very confusing. Hahaha.

If big office space at sarili lang ang room plus would not mind used items, here is what I have in mind.

For amp and DAC in one with the convenience of remote, para anywhere in the room pwede setup, I would always consider paano turn up/down volume easily on an office setup.

WADIA 151 PowerDAC Mini
http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,186769.0.html

Then a high sensitivity small speakers like this one..
http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,189438.0.html

Even as a bedroom setup this will fly...

My digital set-up:

Lenovo laptop (foobar 2K) > musiland o1 dac > DIY LDR passive preamp > semi DIY B&O icepower x 2 in bridge mode amp  > Harbeth C7ES speakers

In my case, sariling room, but sadly, not so big. I'm actually considering getting headphones instead of speakers, because I won't be able to use the set up much during office hours. Maybe not worth the expense to get nice, expensive speakers.

kung kukuha ka ng Audioengine N22, Audioengine P4 (passive speaker) na lang kunin mo instead of the A5+. sa DAC, I highly recommend the Musiland Monitor 01 USB DAC. ;)

can I rip my CDs directly from foobar? can the album cover be automatically downloaded and saved?

sorry so many questions, if there's a Foobar thread please lead me to it.

idol, i use foobar for playing audio files only...and use EAC(Exact Audio Copy) for ripping cd's to flac(lossless or mp3's(compressed)

You can rip cds in Foobar. You have to install the flac codec plugin first. Last time a tried it, that wasn't included. After that, Foobar puts it in a folder. It uses a musics scraper to find cd info online.

While Foobar sounds better marginally than iTunes, I find the latter easier to use. But you save in mp3 or Apple Lossless. It doesn't support flac.

Brader, so EAC pa din pala ang pang rip ninyo, I also used that pero not for some years na din eh. Straight to FLAC na ba? Dati kasi puro WAV files lang extract ko for burning, gusto ko sana build ng archive ko sa laptop.

Same dilemma with iTunes bro, kaya yun isang archive ko puro AAC. I would like to rebuild using FLAC. Or am I missing a new way of doing it?

laptop running linux + DeadBeef ---> USB Dac with tone controls(bass/treble/volume) ---> Class D power amp or DIY Gainclone ---> Fullrange Speaker.

future plan : waiting for the cape for Beaglebone Black to be finished in diyaudio so that i can dish out the laptop and dac, it will just be Beaglebone black as headless player + dac cape combo going to power amp and then speaker, player controls will be just via wifi using mobile phone/tablet/pc

Lalo na kung nakakabit ang jdlabs tube preamp b/w dac and amp. Sa sobrang lambing, nakakatulog na bago pa makatapos ng isang album. ;D

Dami niyan sir. I used dbpoweramp to rip my cds to flac. I also used two drives simultaneously, pwede naman kaya ang bilis. Pag isa nakakaantok nga. Last time may trial period na free yung mga album cover. Now mano mano na lang ako in soucing for the album cover after the free trial.

Kung walang image sa net, kinukunan ko cd covers ko ng digicam. Iyon ang mga ginagamit kong album art.

Yung Foobar settings ko hindi ko pa napapalabas yung album art. List lang siya. Mas gusto ko industrial look. I think may art and info scraper ang Foobar.

Setup 1 (Audio and Room HT)
Source: PC
Digital Amp: NuForce Dia
Speakers: Dali Zensor 1

Setup 2 (Audio and Living Room HT)
Source: NMT
Amp: Denon 1909 AVR
Speakers: Anthony Audio Genesis FS and CS (just a 3.0 setup at the moment)

Setup 3: Kitchen/Dining area
Source: iPod Touch / iPod Nano
Amp/Radio/Player/Speaker: Polk Audio Isonic2 with iPod dock

Planned addition: NuForce BTR-100 Bluetooth receiver on both Setup 1 and 2.  This receiver connects to an amp via optical, and might be using more of this on audio as all my favorite music are on my phones and iPod.

I've gotten rid of my DVD and BD player, and all my media are now on HDD's (PC and NMT), phones, and iPod.  Purely digital on my setup.

How is the Aucharm volume headroom and slam with the SA-35A Pro amp?

Volume is a bit lower when compared to my AN 6.5 CF, I have to push my SA-36A Pro to atleast 11 o' clock to achieve the same volume level as the 9 o' clock position for my AN.

But the bass and sounstage is quite impressive for it's size kahit mp3 lang ung source ko. Possibly dahil sa transmission line box kaya malutong yung mga palo ng drums.

hindi ko pa na try sir eh, pero mamayang gabi subukan ko mag load ng flac then convert to flac at kung mag load mga tags.

UPDATE:

ayaw sir mag load, sa batch converter naman flac to mp3 niya convert. tapos yun mga tags hindi din nag lo-load. wait natin yun mga long time users baka may mali ako nagawa kaya ayaw gumana...

hindi ba tayo naka OT dito, well anyway here's some of my ENIGMA collection. Been a FAN since college when their 1st album came out.

My favourite song was SEVEN LIVES from the same titled album SEVEN LIVES MANY FACES (I think that was Cretu's last masterpiece )

You're right Brother Jo, it "tweaks the mind" when these tunes start to beat  ;D

Hunga naman sir  Keema... mas simpli ang digitAL kaysa analOG... walang masyadong seremonyas sa playback.. Gaya ng linis ng karsyom at groove.. Kailangan lang maayos na DAC to maximize ang hi-res audio format.

PS
my lone piece of Enigma CD purchased 22years ago when I was working somewhere in Micronisia Island. From the jewel case it's my #40 when I used to tag them But now I already lost track for some were lost or went somewhere else.

Yes sir, ok naman po ang internal dac nya. Sa internet radio ko lang naman sya gamit via shoutcast. With dta1,
Kahit 24/7 matipid sa electric bill.  ;D
Check mo muna sir kung compatible ipod/iphone mo sa purei20, yong isang ipod ko with ios7 ayaw magcharge habang nakadock sa pure.

Ah. I see sir. My ipod 4th gen plan ko since 30 pin connector lang pure i20.

Planning on starting a simple stereo setup (pure i20 + ipod + amp + speakers).

Thanks!

gudpm sirs,

dont know much really about audio set-up. i noticed alot are using DAC's; but read somewhere that i cant use one since i stream music via bluetooth. so i typed "DAC bluetooth" at amazon, and bluetooth receivers with Aptx Codec came up. will changing my bluetooth receiver to one with Aptx Codec help? Would there be a noticeable diff? below are some products i saw.

A BT dac may sound better than what you have now, if what you have now is inferior. However a very good wired dac will smoke that if everything else in your system is very good. By that I mean high quality lossless rips, a very good player (Foobar), excellent preamp, amp, and speakers placed correctly.

Do you guys remote your Foobar using the android app?

Pros and cons?

Advice naman din ng skin for Foobar, something not too bright but functional sana. Nakakahilo mag Google dami suggestions, I'd rather listen to those who I can talk back to. ;D

Thanks!

I tried using remote apps for Android and iOS. Setup was a bit confusing. I did get them to work but it had some bugs. Handling was not intuitive. In the end, I just typed on the pc. If I could run 5k then what's 2 meters?

I think there is just novelty in getting your phone to work with Foobar. After that, it becomes more of a hassle to use it.

I do use a remote for foobar2k, it saves me the hassle of standing everytime i want to change my music, increase or decrease the volume. I also like the feature that the music pauses when there is an incoming or outgoing call. I can even turn off my laptop using my phone. The search function also works great, the only thing i dont like was I am not able to configure my selection by album, but you can cue all your favorite songs first on your laptop. All you need is a stable wifi connection. How cool is that? Well maybe not that cool, but I like it!

Dont know about skins that much, I would also like to hear from someone who uses them.

One more thing, Based on my experience, the shorter the usb cable I use from my laptop to my dac, the cleaner the music I get. Ultra silly claim right? Or maybe its just me and my foolish ears. So I would rather have the laptop near the dac which is 6ft away from the listening area and have it controlled via foobar2k remote. Im using the foobar2000 controller pro by sergi mola. You try using the free version first and if you like it, download the pro version for less than P100.

As workaround for the queueing,  you can queue folders/albums as autoplaylist then you can also change songs/folders from the app itself.

>Pcha410 as music player,  NMJ navigator as remote control so don't have to open the tv for song selections.

Hahaha nice simile bro. I know about the playlist but sometimes, when you are already comfortably tucked in on your seat (after a days work on projects) the idea of using a tablet to control Foobar can be a real joy. ;D

I know what your saying, I use all sorts of USB wires at the moment though I'm thinking og diy'ing something shorter for my DAC. It's ironic that for music I can't put my laptop on my lap! ;D ;D ;D

Ayun! Ayos, sabi ko na mas ok dito magtanong, mas solid experience. Nakupo naka edimax ako pero as repeater lang naman. Will force na lang the tablet to connect only on the main modem.

Stupid question, what's the worst thing that could happen kung sakali lagi nagpapalit ang ip address? Di lang gagana ang remote right? Sensiya na di pa gising brain ko... ;D

Kung foobar2k by sergi mola just re-run server wizard at settings.
Best way is to configure your router or AP to assign  a static IPs to your foobar server if available.
Yan ginagawa ko, my cisco1941 router used as dhcp server but I assigned my networked AV gears static IP.

The easiest way is to check your i.p. add sa laptop then recheck it with your cell, mag prompt naman agad sa cell ang ip add. You need to check foobarCon pro. Mas okay ang library selection. May free naman for both, yung kay sergi mola at yung kay dancegom. Download mo muna at paganahin with your laptop, then choose kung alin ang mas okay. I have paid version of both. I find it very useful. Di na ako napapagod tumayo to change volume, tracks or folders.

Sir if I may, latency is like a gauge that is used to measure the total amount of time for an instruction to reach it's output from the time the instruction is executed.

There is no real way of lowering a "PC system's" latency as this is defined by the hardware, primarily the cpu (along with it's bridge) and the I/O system chip and the bus used to carry the instruction. However, you can maximize the latency by reducing non-critical, non-priority and unwanted instructions such as TSRs and all those OS based features that would rather be useless if digital audio is the only job the PC is going to do.

For example, you can disable some plug and play features that hogs cpu power and bus efficiency by actively listening to ports for changes in their states like plugging new devices.

So in short, you are bound by what latency your PC has but you can maximize that by selectively giving your digital audio's signal priority like an expressway.

+ 1,000,000,000

for me no need for external DAC
just optimized your PC for Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to lower latency

my pc latency was 4us flat,  when playing using foobar 10-15us :)

For thousands of DAC users, this can be a subjective matter. If you like your onboard DAC and the fact that the analog signal from it passes through your sound card's analog buffers, not to mention all those capacitors in the signal chain, then you are quite lucky, especially your wallet.

The use of external DAC not only provides better noise management but it also gives the user the autonomy for things like sampling rate, balanced outputs, etc. There is a meaningful advantage in using external DACs, the only question is personal tastes.

When I do non critical listening, I just look for very good tonal balance and reasonable detail. That's when I am into the music rather than into the system. Bast wala akong sensation na bingi, the system is ok.

When I do critical listening, that's the time I hear the difference between dacs and players among other things.

That said, I can enjoy my phone plus t-amp and bookshelf speakers as much as my 2a3 home audio system.

Welcome, makabawi man lang ako sayo re FoobarCon :D

Usually you don't need any plugins to disable, it is usually done in the bios first. What you do is "minimize" or fully disable features that is not required for digital audio. Then fine tune your OS, in the case of Windows there are so many background programs running that we don't know about and don't need for digital audio applications. :)

My El-cheapo setup:

I had an old netbook lying around the house. Initially, I wanted to install xbmc but realized that it did not have an HDMI port so I made it into a music server. I erased Windows XP and installed Debian (bare install without GUI) + MPD or music player daemon as my music server.

Setup 1:

Server/software: Old netbook running Debian Linux + mpd (music player daemon)
DAC: Super Pro 707
Amp: JD Labs Baby G integrated Amp
Speakers: Anthony Audio Philippians bookshelves
Music: I ripped my CD collection to FLAC using Rubbyripper (again in Linux).

Cost of my setup 1 is around P17k. Got the DAC and Baby G second hand. Philippians was brand new. I control the server from my android phone using the MPDroid app.

Setup 2:

Instead of a laptop, I just plugin my Xiaomi Mi3 phone as my source. I then use Spotify premium which costs me P129 per month. The sound is a bit harsh compared to my laptop.

Todo:

Use mopidy instead of MPD. It will integrate MPD + spotify + sound cloud into one music server. Can be controlled by MPDroid as well.

Looks like a good project you have there, zook. Linux, that's a bit hard core for me. I tinkered with that few years back but nothing about ut was straightforward.

I just kept my netbook on Windows 7 and stripped it of bells and whistles. Foobar does the playing out a JDS Labs dac.

No need for external PC speakers as the built in speakers are decent enough.

nagamit ko na rin ang dbpoweramp a few days ago, I think December 31 or January 1 ko ito unang ginamit. Ang ganda nga, at mabilis rin mag-rip ng CDs to FLAC. Very useful rin na it would search the internet for the details of the audio CD, including album art if available. Nakakatuwa :D

May una ako ginamit na freeware na flac/cd ripper program, pero parang hindi maganda ang naging sound quality ng mga flac files ko. sa dbpoweramp, parang mas maganda ang quality ng flac.

Andami ko natutunan dito, Thanks for sharing guys especially the FoobarCon.

I've been thinking before kung may Android app na pwede mag-remote control ng PC para hindi na gagamitan ng Monitor/TV for managing music it seems FoobarCon can do it although kelangan pa din ng monitor for other tasks like logging in/shutting down. I'm thinking of getting a Intel NUC as music server.

Current setup:

My wife's old Samsung Jet cellphone > SMSL SA-36a Pro > 14AWG lamp cord > PSB Imagine XB

No flac music for now tyaga muna sa 320kbps mp3.
I was just surprised mas mataaas ata voltage output ng lumang Samsung Jet compared to Samsung Galaxy S4 when connected to smsl sa-36a pro.

Ipon ipon muna for now, next November pa ulet pwede bumili ng audio products. :)

I'm using Android and IOS to remote my Foobar and Jriver.

for shutting down the PC, you can download the RD Client for Android and you can shutdown the PC using that app. No need for monitor.

mine is as simple as it gets.  feel the convienience outweighs the SQ im losing.  hehe.  Quite surprising but find it better than my nad cdp before.  Playing all FLAC files and 3D movies all in one package.

Mede8er 800x3d--->  Creek amp----> Xavian Speakers

I though i will need a dedicated dac but surprisingly, the RTD1186 SQ is superb!

Bel Canto is your best option since it is available. Else another option is Benchmark or Mytek

Thanks sa input sir Jen. I'd really like to get the Bel Canto DAC 1.5 but im really hesitant to do so because I also have a battery based power supply and would like to utilise it. The LNS1 is just getting in the way of the deal and I understand where the seller is coming from. No worries at all.

Any ideas where I can source out a Benchmark DAC1 or Mytek DSD instead? :)

Three possible sources:

1) Synology DS414 NAS > Logitech Squeezebox Touch > Rega DAC > Prima Luna Prologue 2 amp > Sonus Fabrer Pre-Home Concertinos

2) Ipad/Iphone > Apple TV > Logitech Squeezebox Touch > Rega DAC > Prima Luna Prologue 2 amp > Sonus Fabrer Pre-Home Concertinos

3) iPod Classic 160GB > Cambridge Audio id100 Digital iPod Dock > Rega DAC > Prima Luna Prologue 2 amp > Sonus Fabrer Pre-Home Concertinos

very nice! just add a center, surrounds, and a multi-channel AVR, and you have an equally good home theater. :D

Magandang hapon PDVD..

About to finish my simple set-up sa bedroom ko, pero I have some questions lang. Posting it here since its digital audio as well.

I want to connect my integrated amp to my laptop, so I can play my flacs. What cable do I need. Tried googling --  and saw that I need a toslink cable daw. Pero I noticed that yung ends ng Toslink wouldn't fit the aux out ng laptop.

Also, is there an android app, which can control/play the flacs/mp3s in my laptop when its connected to the amp? Yung simpleng app lang po sana, Im not that techie kasi.

Maraming salamat!

you need DAC if you want superior audio quality, medyo hindi maganda ang on-board dac ng mga laptops. dac is usually connected via USB from laptop then RCA to your amp. there's quite a few audio player for windows/linux that has a mobile client so you can control the playback from your mobile device.

ganyan ba yung balak mo kunin? if yes, meron na nga syang built-in DAC so kailangan mo na lang optical or coax connection, wala kasi siyang USB input. just make sure na meron optical/coax out naman yung pc mo. i think in some laptops you can assign the 3.5mm jack as a digital out, yung dating laptop ko kasi noon pwede, if not need mo ng USB to coax/optical converter.

You may need an USB to SPDIF Converter kung walang Toslink yung Laptop mo. Basically it will convert USB signal to SPDIF signal either via Coax or Optical. Meron ako dati music fidelity v-link 192.

Saw your reco's for the converter, and mejo may presyo siya :( I'm not really into critical listening, and 1st time ko kung sakali making music via optical/coaxial -- so I just want to try it out without spending a lot.

AKM D/A based DACs seems not very popular here in PDVD or rather not highlighted but because the very good sounding Sony PS1 uses AKM D/A, tried to acquire a not very popular Chinese brand using AKM 4495. So far compared to Analog Devices AD1955, Wolfson Microelectronics WD8741 and ESS ESS9018 based D/A from the DACs I have at present, this is one hell of an analog sounding DAC. I am reminded my Sony PS1 and the Sony 701ES CDP.

Some reviews using AKM D/A

Spotify on note4 going through arcam rblink bt receiver then mf dac v3 to mf x10v3 to mf x10d to sonic frontiers preamp to b&k power amp to monitor audio gs10 bs speakers.
is it possible to have a functional connection between the mini usb of note4 to the spdif input of a dac? Are there connectors available off the shelf?

Yes dependent really if your phone supports USB audio output , but almost sure note 4 does .  I posted one option  in the audio sources section ..

jambam is right ..... first is to know if note 4 supports digital signal output via its mini usb port.  Then you will need a USB to SPDIF converter (similar to my iFi Audio iLink) that will serve as the converter and connect to your DAC's SPDIF inputs.

How is the hifiberry compared to usb output (no experience, I assume this can be done) of stand alone raspberry? I'm thinking of setting up a roon bridge using hifiberry but i'm thinking maybe it'll be fine with usb output?

Question for RPI users. If I have an external DAC and I connect it to the USB of the RPI, will it work?

Will I have any problems with software drivers?

software issues..not that i know. linux kernel supports virtually majority of DACs..

just choose generic dac

compared with my marantz.. less darker ang music..

maybe when I upgrade for linear power supply.. baka may mkita difference..

It's an AKM based DAC that I built, I think the USB interface uses an XMOS chip.

Planning to get a RPI, been reading on the volumio and it seems to be the right path to go.

Cheap and cheerful...

I would prefer headless unit.. to minimise power consumption.. more convinient and minimalistic..

if you can wait, go the aliexpress route, if not you can check lazada/shopee.ph and other online seller in FB. i think the price ranges from 1500-4K depending on the resolution and if its capacitive or resistive sensor.

go get the Raspberry Pi ver 3 model B.

Thanks.

What do you recommend using for a controller on a headless setup?

But since power won't be an issue for me (I have standby parts for a 5A linear regulated psu) and it will be used in an area where there is no wifi signal which is why I'm really keen on a touchscreen version.

i experimented on daphile before.. it was impressive as a headless unit for intel PC.
for me daphile running on PC is my choice  considering the price vs expensive softwares (roon, Jriver on audio optimizer, et al)..

Clutter is the main issue of touch screen.. plus the issue of lagging as you will restart touch screen more often.. i dont think u can use touchscreen in volumio.. Rune.. pwde.. pero nakakaubos pasensya kahit mouse gamit on HDMI..

d nmn problema wifi.. with or without internet you can use it..

I went back to using Foobar2000.

The recent 1.6.x update phased out Direct Sound output and sets WASAPI as default. AFAIK in shared mode, it can already do automatic sample rate switching based on the source file regardless of the sample rate set in the Windows mixer which avoids resampling.

Four years ago I decided that my days of maintaining a dedicated audio system was over.  My listening habits have changed considerably as I aged and I never had time to sit down anymore on my listening chair and listen to audio for hours just like before.  I became tired of the cycle of purchasing software (CD medium), listening to the material once and then storing for years before I get urge to listen to it again.  My children who have now grown up also gave me a feedback that they didn't utilize the stereo because of its stupid complexity.  Turning on as much as 6 to 7 different components in sequence before you can even press play is daunting.

After careful self assessment, I found myself listening 99.9% of the time to music while i was doing something else here in the house.  My wife and kids do the same thing.  Nobody here in the house sits down and just listens critically to a track on a carefully matched, tuned and positioned audio system.  Bottom line is that my dedicated audio system has reached its end in terms of utilization.

A re-orientation was in order and the goal was to simplify and change the system so that it is simple, easy to operate so that everybody can use it, great sounding, can operate in different zones in the house and most of all...reliable.

As much as i love vinyl there was a time that I had to give that up for CD's. Now the time came for me to give that up for Digitally sourced Music.

Here is my current set up for digital:

Living room 5.1 audio and video application:
Sonos Playbar
Sonos Sub
Sonos Connect Amp - Macky Monitors (rear surrounds)

Whole house audio ground floor:
Sonos Amp - 4 Polk Audio Atrium 4 for ground floor - wall mounted
Rel Q201E (hidden)

My bathroom:
Sonos Symfonisk Bookshelf (mono)

Home Theater and audio:
Sonos Connect
Pioneer Elite SC-05
7.1 Dynaudio w/ REL Q201E

Connectivity for all Sonos devices:  100Mbps via 4 Google Mesh nodes.
Controllers: All of our devices (Laptops, Desktop, Iphone, IPad or Android phone) have the Sonos app installed.
Musical sources via Sonos app:  Spotify, Mixcloud and 1 TB NAS of lossless music files (all my CD's ripped)

Future upgrades:  4 Triad ceiling speakers for ground floor and another Sonos Amp for 2nd floor with 4 Triad ceiling speakers and a Triad 10 inch sub.

I think we are in the same predicament Bro hec, I don't do critical listening anymore & I barely turn on my system except that when it really needs a warm-up for a very long idle unused time, I still kept all my CDs & Vinyl collection though. As for movie watching I don't even watch in my dedicated room, like as you said it takes up too many switches to push just to watch a single disc even though we have those one-push Harmony remotes, I just prefer watching a movie on our living room w/ a Soundbar & the magic remote of the TV that handles everything w/out too much complexity. As for music I'm not really good at the present stuff like streaming but I do have a TIDAL account that I also play from our desktop thru a Marshall speaker w/c fills the whole ground floor w/ non-stop "Our Choice Music". Sign of times that we are really changing also just like how music is played nowadays.  :)

Bro Kenneth,

Times have changed indeed and so did we. Don't get me wrong...the love of music is still there. What changed is just the manner in how I listen to it therefore I had to re-orient my systems to meet specific goals centered on reality.

Aside from the tremendous convenience, Digital also offers unmatched practicality as well.  I never computed how many hundreds of thousand of pesos I have spent in music and video software through the decades but I know its a lot.  Nowadays a premium subscription for Spotify is just Php150.00 a month or Php1.8K/year.  Mix Cloud is totally free.  Just those two providers and my fix is satisfied.   In comparison, one XRCD kila JR is Php2.5K.  I don't even blink before when I buy 8 to 10 in one visit.  Number of times I listened to those CD's?  Once and that was it.

I'm not saying that this route will be for everyone.  There was a time that I enjoyed the sheer transparency, PRAT and Imaging that my audio system can deliver.  In my case those times are over.  Who knows...I may go back at it once again in the near future. I might have some regrets in the future of letting go of certain audio components or software but I have to live in the present and reality dictates that I have to accept and adjust my system to the changes.

in my case I sold all my audio equipment 4 years ago - it was a 5.1 setup .... recently I got an itch again and brought a Marantz NR1200 network receiver and a pair of MartinLogan Motion 20 floorstanders ... my idea was just to have a HiFi system, I'm no longer interested with those so many speakers - it was simply too messy and too expesive to follow what's trending ... with my new setup, my music sources are FLAC files on USB, MP3 music over the network with my WD Cloud storage, and Spotify ... I was planning to subscribe to Amazon Music HD as I've heard that the quality is higher than Tidal, but it wouldn't allow using a credit card from PH - I'll probably try Tidal and see if is better than Spotify

I also have old CD's, DVD.s and BD that I no longer use ... it is very convenient to stream music or play music from my USB drive .... FLAC files played from the USB drive have excellent quality by the way, much better than music from Spotify ... I'll try Tidal after the break-in of my speakers ... in the future, I'll probably buy a soundbar for the movies

Tidal from a phone as a remote. The source is a google chromecast audio going into a dac via toslink.

The back up is a bluetooth receiver going into the same dac via coax with its source being the same phone.

update:

an i7 8th gen, 12gig laptop with audioquest jitter bug connected to a DAC via USB. streamer is playing via audirvana using a phone remote.
this sounds much much more resolute than before.

how can this get better? anyone?

first may i congratulate your upgrade.  am no expert but i see nothing (except networked set-up for absolute convenience) and i supposed that your files are hi-res not to mention that your one pdvd'er with great audio system. just my humble two cents. 😁

Hi noob, a very modest system in fact.
I dont have local files. Rather purely streaming using tidal. Medyo tamad na mag rip, dl, and all that extra effort to make the files local. If someone is willing to sell hi-res files, i might consider... Ganyan ako katamad😁

Well, Tidal is good, it's streaming lossless cd quality music. Way better with spotify which i have. Though i have subscribe to a three-month apple music trial which is similar to the quality of tidal.

You know, between buying from HDtracks or other hi-res (the same flac files) sources, i find it reasonable to subscribe to streaming sites. If you buy, you can only buy by the album so there maybe some songs that you may not like. It will turn out to be costlier, i think.

Let us hear from other members what other recommendations they may offer. 😁

I have an i3 Intel NUC running on ROCK (Roon Optimized Core Kit) feeding an SOTM SMS-200 Ultra network bridge which feeds a Chord MScaler upsampler that in turn feeds a Chord Hugo TT2 DAC.  Both Chords and the SOTM are powered by SBooster LPSUs. I have an SOTM SNH-10G switch powered by an SPS-500 psu that ties all the network lines together. I have a Tidal subscription.

I also have a CEC TL5 transport going to the MScaler.  The CEC is an unknown gem.  It sounds really good even with regular CDs.

I credit the Chord gear, especially the TT2 for relegating my analog front end into a display piece.

Music Source: Spotify and Youtube ... I still have FLAC files on USB but no longer using, Spotify is more convenient ... hopefully they would have higher fidelity audio soon
Video Source: Netflix and Video from Network Storage, and PS5 Digital Edition for games

Living Room: Marantz NR1200 with a pair of MartinLogan Motion 20 FS, and Sony 65A80J (will soon add Sony SRS NS-7)
PC Audio: Bose Companion 50

I have greatly simplified my digital audio setup - just a pair of FS stereo speakers from 5.1 setup, got rid of all my CDs, DVDs, and BDs. I'm very satisfied with my music system simplified setup, but still longing for a surround system for movies and have been considering soundbar with ATMOS support, but I'm still weary of the clutter of having a subwoofer and rear speakers.

I recently came across the Sony SRS NS-7 neckband speaker that offers personalized ATMOS 360 degrees spatial speaker qualities - expensive for a personal audio system at around 15k ($299), but much cheaper than a decent soundbar system, hence I took on the plunge (still waiting for delivery, but I'll write a review once tested).  Here's a review from sound experts review of the product for your reference - https://youtu.be/11zKZApaPkw

The digital music technology nowadays is so good in both convenience and sound quality that it already compensates for its shortcomings compared to analog playback.
I still maintain a decent analog source only to touch and look at ocassionally. And yes, they still sound better than any other format though not in the same gap as it was years ago.

On the other hand, I rarely touch vinyl, maybe once a month just to keep the motor turning. I've never heard an analog system sound better than digital... but perhaps that's just me, a little bit of hiss and I go crazy.

Some of the good things that came out of the digital streaming era is that it forced the loudness wars and piracy to go in decline.

As for my digital setup, I've had these for many years with no urge to upgrade so I guess, I'm already at my endgame.

Speakers:
Synology 1819+ NAS > Windows PC > Jriver Media Center 29 or Apple Music > KEF LS50W active speakers (via USB input) & dual SVS SB12-NSD subwoofers

Headphones:
Synology 1819+ NAS > Windows PC > Jriver Media Center 29 or Apple Music > HRT Musicstreamer III DAC > Topping L30 Headphone Amp > Sennheiser HD 650
