Title: TV Commercials
Post by: qguy on Sep 05, 2014 at 06:34 AM
Just curious if you have a 30 minute sitcom that was produced in the US and the local TV operator bombards it with hundred of commercials does that mean that the US channels also uses the same amount of commercials or the local channels cuts sections out ?

qguy .... remembers the time when 3 commercials was already a lot, maybe thats why I stopped watching regular TV.

most US shows allot about 17 minutes for commercials, that's why an hour-long show is actually only 43 minutes long; sitcoms are only about 20 minutes.

afaik, local limit is at 20 minutes of commercial load for every programming hour.  so if it is 17 in the US there will be 6 more 30-second spots here.  the only exception here is gma7 which is not part of kbp, the body which enforces the limitations.

to answer your question, unless portions are censored, those will not be cut but programming extends an hour.  hence, gma and abs do not announce timing for their shows but rather which program it follows (ie. "...pagkatapos ng ______."

Back when GMA 7 and ABS-CBN were still showing canned foreign sitcoms and dramas, they regularly cut out sections and entire subplots of episodes to accommodate more commercials. I even wrote a letter about this annoying thing they were doing that was published in The Philippine Star (discussing an entire episode as aired in the States and how it aired locally, with the cuts enumerated), and there was an explanation about how the rights to the show got more expensive and they had no choice but to add more commercials to continue airing it. BS, but that's what they said at the time.

Nowadays, the major networks no longer air canned shows, they're all local dramas during prime time, so the foreign shows are either on UHF or on a cable network. They're usually only cut for censorship purposes, since there aren't many advertisers buying up commercial spots on them, anyway. Baka nga puro mga station plug lang ang mapanood mo kung manood ka ng broadcast. Madalas isa o wala ni isang commercial na ipinapalabas.

It's funny just watched in Youtube an interview of George Harrison by Dick Cavett and George said that he doesn't watch too much American TV because it's rubbish and full of commercials that he cannot tell if he's still watching the show or the commercial! He he and that was in 1971! Seems nothing had changed.
