Maratabat, Pride and Honor (Arlyn de la Cruz) **1/2 - Loosely based on a true story, namely the Maguindanao massacre in which 58 people were ruthlessly murdered by the ruling political dynasty in a province located in the southern Muslim area of the Philippines. This film is a thinly veiled fictionalized account of the case. The first-time writer-director, Arlyn de la Cruz is a rather famous television journalist (she's fairly famous for managing to get an interview with the leader of the Islamic terrorist group in the Philippines, the Abu Sayyaf).....and it shows. And for the most part, that is unfortunate. The story itself would make for a really gripping film and there are moments where that shines through. Unfortunately, the script and direction fails to rise above "dramatic re-enactment" level. There are so many artistic and cinematic ways she could have gone with it. It's way too in-the-nose and straightforward often overly preachy. Its heart is in the right place but someone with a more firmer grasp of the medium would've made it truly memorable.

Magkakabaung (The Coffin Maker) (Jason Paul Laxamana) ***1/2 - A single father to a young girl who works as a coffin maker experiences tragedy when his daughter falls ill and dies. Filipino dramas (hell, mainstream dramas in general) tend to try to manipulate tears and emotion out of this. This one refreshingly takes an unsentimental, matter-of-fact approach to death, grief, loss, the realities of life and what life is like for the nation's poor. I kind of love the fact that the filmmaker deliberately made the main protagonist, a grieving father, supposedly a sympathetic figure as not very sympathetic sometimes (you sometimes get frustrated by his actions). It's an imperfect but very well made drama.

Does this mean no showing of foreign films during the film fest? Thanks...

But anyway, if i will have to watch a pinoy movie I may incline to watch the Andres Bonifacio movie by R Padilla...

MMDA reports first two days' take of P182M at MMFF

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported a two-day income of P182 million from the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 40th year edition, higher by about 12 percent than last year.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said that this year’s opening–day gross was P146 million, compared to P128 million last year.

As of 1 p.m. Friday (Dec. 26) the day's ticket sales had already reached P36 million, which was also higher than the P32 million of last year.

Tolentino said that the festival is expecting to surpass last year's P987 million gross income.

"We are expecting a gross income of P1.1 billion this year," he said.

Among this year’s top grossing films, so far, according to Tolentino, are My Big Bossing’s Adventures and Praybeyt Benjamin, as well as horror films Feng Shui 2 and Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2.

He clarified, however, that the exact figures concerning each entry have yet to be determined.

"We will announce the ranking of all the entries on January 4, after the showing, to prevent trending," Tolentino told reporters.

The four other MMFF official entries include the historical drama Bonifacio: '
Ang Unang Pangulo, the romance-comedy English Only Please, action film Magnum Muslim .357 and horror film Shake, Rattle & Roll XV.

Meanwhile, the awards night is scheduled on December 27, which will be held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

Proceeds of the annual Holiday festival are being distributed to the Movie Workers Welfare Foundation Inc., Motion Picture and Anti-Film Piracy Council, Film Development Council of the Philippines, and the Optical Media Board.

That's kind of a hollow victory since they're the only films being shown. It's kind of like bragging how successful your store is when it's the only one in your whole town.

Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2 (Erik Matti) ***1/2 - This is the sequel to Erik Matti's own Tiktik and I have to say, it is a HELL of a lot better. Two years has passed since the events of the first film which, in a dark prologue, lead to the death of Macoy's wife. This time he's in Manila and he's fighting a different breed of aswangs. The film has builds on and expands the mythology of the first film and improves on it. The screenplay is a lot stronger. It also mostly succeeds in blending a genres. It goes from scary and serious, to an exciting eye-popping action movie, to rather broad, laugh out loud comedy without missing a beat or feeling like it's jarring. Lotlot de Leon, playing an aunt, is a real scene stealer. Her role could have easily been annoying but she manages not to be. It's almost feels like Edgar Wright directed a Raid movie with monsters. No joke!

Saw KUBOT last night, twas an OK movie for me. I liked the first one better except when the aswangs started turning, the FX and CGI seems rushed. KUBOT kinda lost the eeriness of the first one which i liked a lot. And i think the story/script/editing needs a little tweaking. Naguguluhan ako sa mga transitions e. (And this goes for almost every pinoy movie). Maybe because ive so much high expectations (I really liked the first one and was so impressed) kaya parang kulang. Anyway its a fun movie, worth your while and money, c'mon lets support our own, napag iiwanan na tayo ng ibang asian countries e :)

IMO only ;)

I have reviews of Kubot (worth watching!) and two of the MMFF New Wave films on the front page. I follow a lot of people who actually watch ALL the entries to know which ones are worth watching. Three things are consistent: The best films among the magic 8 are Kubot, English Only Please and the "Ulam" segment of Shake, Rattle and Roll XV.

yup it is, you won't feel robbed after watching it, and it seems like the MMFF board is finally recognizing the need of the more discerning moviegoers for quality Filipino fare during the holidays and is trying to provide a number of "viewable" options together with the dumbed down money-rakers...

English Only, Please (Dan Villegas) *** - A Filipino-American, dumped by his Filipina girlfriend, hires a Filipina translator to tutor him in Filipino so he can properly recite an angry Filipino piss-off speech to her. Hmmm. I wonder if the  two of them will get together. Yes, it's a Filipino rom-com. Yes, they're pretty much exactly like rom-coms of any nationality. Yes, a lot of the familiar narrative beats are all there but the script was co-written by Antoinette Jadaone, one of Filipino cinema's most exciting voices. She somehow makes formulaic rom-coms somehow more intelligent and far more palatable for at least my taste. It also helps that the two leads, Derek Ramsay and Jennylynn Mercado are gosh-darned charming as well. It's pure fluff but entertaining and not insulting.

After this, maybe it's about time Mr. Ramsay start breaking bones on screen...after all, he's MMA-trained, and an action film (a la Gareth Evans' Raid movies) should be the logical step now that he has the clout.

What the Philippine film industry needs is another straight-up action thriller along the lines of OTJ.
