Hi all,
Are there speakers models or speaker brands which are more suitable for audio?
a. If yes, what are these?
b. I'm particularly interested in those in the mid-level, maybe 30-40K range. Can you specify models and brands so I can try to find stores for audition?
c. For these speakers, are there also matching or more suitable amps? Please specify as well.
Edit:
Music played - Occasional pop, lots of standards, acoustic, r&b. No hard rock or heavy metal.
Room size - 20sqm, but listening area is only half of that
Thanks in advance.
-
That depends on your amp and your taste (what type of music you listen to)
For 40k, there are a lot of good choices out there.

I will be buying another amp (not my HT amp) to match the speakers.
-
1. KEF LS50 paired with tube amp
2. B&W CM1 series 2 paired with Rotel
3. PSB Imagine B paired with NAD
4. Full Range (Audio Nirvana) paired with SET tube amp
5. Monitor Audio RX6 paired with Rotel
6. Goldenear Aon 2 paired with tube amp or Marantz
7. Dynaudio Excite X14

What amp do you have in mind? That helps in giving you recommendations as far as matching is concerned.
Also, please give the size of your room, because if your room is small, youre better of with bs speakers, those require proper standans to work their best.

Thank you Louie. Of the speakers you mentioned, I am familiar with the KEF LS50 because of a thread here in pinoydvd, and the Imagine B, because I own the Image B6. I've yet to hear or see any of the others but will look into those in the next few weeks.

I actually have no idea what amp to get for music. I'm only familiar with the usual HT ones - Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha.
-
Ayan na, after ng CD player ng turntable, dedicated speakers na for audio. ;D

NAD, Rotel, Marantz, AMX Tube Amps, Cayin Tube Amps, Line Magnetic Tube Amps, and vintage amps like Sansui, Technics, Luxman, etc. are some of the popular audio amps that are budget friendly but have very very good sound quality...
-
don't forget those amplifiers (pre-amps, integrated amp, power amp) made by sirs JojoD, tony, rene rivo, andrew sevilla, mang rod, etc etc
pati mga speakers rin ni sir Anthony (diy_master)
ang dami pagpipilian :D

So far, cd player pa lang natuloy. Hahaha! I'm still having second thoughts about getting a turntable (although I already know what I want in case I push through).

You just opened a big can of worms! Hahahaha
Take your time in deciding what you want. Audition lang palagi, at the end of the day, the one that puts a smile on your face is the right gear for you.

8. Duevel Planets + Tube AMP - Have a sweet spot wherever you are seated in the room. :)

Yes, I agree... I was able to experience this with Sir Alfie's (obsi) system and they have a very wide sound stage :)

Is the 40K for speakers alone ? Amp would have its own budget ?
Are you a basshead or at least want well defined palpable bass ?

Yes, just for speakers =)
Since I like r&b and standards (Diana Krall, Michael Buble, Sinatra), at least palpable bass.
-
Go with B & W 600 series and Rotel or Cayin

Dynes!
I wanted to recommend this, but without a proper high current amp, the ts might not like the sound...
I have read though, that the x12/x14 has a linear impedance, so that might help in her amplifier matching...
Hmmmm.... An emotiva poweramp of course is a proven match ;) (kulam na agad) hehehe

Sonus Faber 8)

gusto ko sana is xavian jr, dynes contour 1.4 or the reference 3A dulcet, but given that budget atty, you myt want to try the rega rs3. its my personal preference, its a little floorstanding speaker, ang liit liit lang nya na FS pero ang galing galing. makakapili ka pa ng kulay that will match your listening room and gears....
-
MA Silver 1 all rounder speaker for me. not soft not live it suit your type of music. worth a try. it has bass for its size.
just me :)
-
Ano kaya ang hit rate of a suggested gear being actually bought by an OP? Seen this a lot of times and often, ang layo ng binibili he he.
-
^Well, last time I asked about speakers, I picked one of the options I was looking at :):

Budget almost always plays a big part, plus experiences with the dealer, and personal preference after audition.

Hi Tonedeaf,
Those PSB image speakers that you have are very capable speakers, you could try buying a decent stereo integrated amp first, hook your CDP and other devices to it *Turntable*Cough*Cough*.... and just switch banana plugs from AVR to Stereo on the fly on whatever mood you're in - Stereo or HT.
A NAD 326Bee or higher model is a proven match to the PSB image line.
Hope it helps
-
pasok na pasok sa zensor 7 ang ganyang budget ang sarap naman na problema yan atty.
-
Sonus Faber 8)
Sonus Faber Toy Bookshelfs... Pasok sa budget :)
-

-

-

Parang either/or yata yung turntable, speakers or amps. I already have enough posts about the first, and this thread for the second. Hahaha. I actually got one of those amp switchers already, but can't decide what my next upgrade would be.
While I'm happy with my B6, I will still audition the brands listed here, for my further education and, who knows, future system improvement.

Sinabi sa akin ni Rex one time, from Image, wag daw ako mag Imagine series. Synchrony na daw :)
@Louie and geriboy, thanks for the suggested amps.
@cooltoyz, oicnoreg, Nelson, mhan, Dodie, jh@meeh, musika, comet and drakula, thank you for the suggested brands.
-
I think What Hifi/Rex has great pre-loved Sonus Faber speakers on sale there that will fit your budget.
-
Audition lang ng audition bro....

Audition lang ng audition bro....
sis si tonedeaf. ;)
anyway, for a +/- 40k budget, I recommend the following:
GoldenEar Aon 2 (ribbon tweeter, dual radiator)
Martin Logan Motion 15 (ribbon tweeter, ported)
JBL Studio 530 (horn tweeter, ported)
Audioengine P4 (silk dome tweeter, ported)
-

Thank you, I will check this out.
@DTNS and Dodie, thank you for the suggestions. I haven't started auditioning yet. Hopefully, this next few weekends, I can make the rounds.
-
for audio only setup, simple lang yan: NAD amp+ PSB speakers.
-
Dynes!
yan rin suggest ko! very musical!
-
KEF LS50
-
Current trend seems to be pure digital active systems like the Dynaudio XDs and recently, Devialet Phantom.
-
For commercial brands I would go for Reference 3A, Magico and Harbeth
For DIY, Mark Audio
-

yeah. nad plus psb. hard to change setup.
-
KEF LS50
+1
Sounds so sweet even with just the NAD C326BEE
