Hi everyone, I've auditioned the wharfedale dentons 80th anniversary edition and i quite liked the sound. I am currently a proud owner of a pair of a audio titus bookshelf speakers.
What other speakers in this price range do you recommend? Im looking for a loanerso we can include in the blind test as well :)
Thanks!
-
My target with this price range is either Dali Zensor 3 or Monitor Audio BX2. I may favor the Dali, but will wait on the result of an audition pairing with Marantz PM6005. Others who have the systems already may share their recommendations based on experienced.
-
check out the Audioengine P4 (passive speakers). they cost just 12k/pair. :)
-
I prefer the dentons over the monitor audio bx2 for music. Both are excellent speakers though, you won't go wrong with either as long as it matches your amplification and source. And your music preference of course.
-
Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2.
-
Thanks!
I have not heard the Dali nor the BX2 yet. The Dentons are priced very reasonably considering its build. Reviews deemed it a good deal at 500 USD, how much more if its selling for less :)
What Amp are you using sir denton?
-

These pair of speakers I have auditioned at Dexterton :) Thanks!
-
Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2.
+1
Slightly above your budget but they are very musical if paired with the right amp. Btw, what amp are you planning to use?
-
I am currently using a lowly SMSL SA 60 Amp :) On paper it packs 50WPC and we did some blind testing against a Rotel RA 12, it did not disappoint.
Though we used a pair of A Audio Monumental(Sir Pchin's) which were not so hard to drive.
I wonder how it would pair with 6ohm speakers.
-
I'm currently using my Mezzo 2 with SMSL SA-36 PRO and they sound pretty good together.
-
I'll also look into the Mezzo :) Who carries the brand here locally?
-
Im sure the sa36 and sa60 have a lot in common when it comes to sonic signature. why don't you try the mezzo 2 and see if it suits your palate. Master Conan also has a rotel paired with his mezzo if i'm not mistaken, hence a good match if you are planning to change amps in the future.

Alright! Cool! :)
Bukas naman ulit.
Goodnight!

Correct! Though I've hardly used my Rotel amp after being exposed to T amps!
-
The little smsl amps punch way above its price hehe
I am looking to borrow a pair of dentons and do a blind test vs a pair of titus gold and sir pchin's psb bookshelf speakers (forgot thr model).
These speakers are more or less within the same price range.

You should audition speakers within the Dentons' price range. I personally own a pair and they are bang for the buck. Plus the finish is superb. I like the warmish presentation, which complements the neutral to slightly warm sound of the Rega Elicit powering them.
Offhand, the potential competitors would the Q-Acoustics speakers, B&W 600 series, Tannoy Fusions, and lower-end Paradigms.
-
Paradigm Atom V6 is Good!
-
For the benefits of those looking for one with this price range, I suggest to indicate where we can audition it. Let's assume that we were not going to use extra subwoofer. Thanks.
Wharfedale Dentons 80th Anniv. Ed. -
Dali Zensor 3 - Architectural Audio
Monitor Audio BX2 - MLY Ent. (AVShop)
Audioengine P4 -
Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2 - 5th Avenue
Paradigm Atom V6 -

Noted on this :) Will try to get hold of as many speakers as possible haha So far, the feasible ones are the Dentons and the Titus which I already have. I have heard the 685 s2 but only for a short period and was not able to bring my player that time :(

Updating your list Sir Junji:
Wharfedale Dentons 80th Anniv. Ed. - Listen Up at 3rd Floor Glorietta
Dali Zensor 3 - Architectural Audio
Monitor Audio BX2 - MLY Ent. (AVShop)
Audioengine P4 - Dexterton at 3rd Floor Greenbelt 5
Mordaunt Short Mezzo 2 - 5th Avenue
Paradigm Atom V6 - (not sure if spectra carries this)
-
I vouch for the Dali Zensors 3s.
BX2 is too laid back for my taste, a better alternate is the RX2 but of course that is way beyond the 20K price brand new, and even slightly used or pre-loved it still is beyond the strict 20K budget.
Mezzo 2 is a bit laid back too
Paradigm Atom V6 is another contender but may be a bit bass shy.
Audioengine = self powered and negates your need for a dedicated amp but this may be an issue if you already have an existing setup (amp + preamp / integrated)

I'm not sure what set-up you listened to but for me Mezzo 2 is very detailed using the following amplifiers:
Rotel RA04
Topping TP60
SMSL SA-36 Pro
It's almost as detailed as my Klipsch RB-51 II but with a much more refined midrange.
-
Nice, this is going to be an interesting matchup din :)
Will try to listen to all of them speakers na din para masama lahat bago mag decide.
The amplifier to be used most likely will be the SMSL SA 60 since its the only one I have left haha Plus this amp will fit in a small bag :)
-
Bemermeister, anong size ng room mo?
-
I have my speakers in the sala, I have no idea of the dimensions, sorry. Its quite long, my estimate its about 5x15. I have the speakers a feet or two from the wall.
I don't have space in my room anymore which would be a better fit for audio.
-
Add PSB Imagine XB on your list...
-
Sundan ko ito.
Im in the market of budget audio set up sa office.
-
Thanks Bemermeister for updating the list. Balitaan ko rin kayo kung ano ang mapapasakamay ko :) Though I cannot be able to audition it all, sana naging parang Raon na lang ang pwestohan ng mga dealer locally. Magka-kalayo kasi eh, hirap mapuntahan lahat.

Ah, sige subukan kong pasyalan at dadalin ko na rin yung amp ko para mag-audition. Salamat!

Hi Everyone,
I have brought my portable SMSL SA 60 with my Fiio X5 as source last Thursday to test a couple of speakers in Glorietta.
I was able to audition the following:
Wharfedale Dentons
Tannoy Mercury V4 Floorstanders
Tannoy DC6 Bookshelf Speakers
Each one had its own strengths and weaknesses but what struck me the most were still the Dentons for putting up a fun sounding experience and making it happen in such a small form factor. They may not be as detailed as the DC6 but they make up for the lack in detail with their warm sound and extended bass.
Maybe the SMSL pairs better with the Dentons, I have not tried other amps with the Dentons yet.
Pero I highly suggest you guys give it a try as it did not disappoint.
Im on to the next set of speakers :)

You can tune the Dentons via their proximity to the wall. I prefer them mga 2 feet from the wall to balance out the bass else they become boomy.

Thanks for the info!
Nice set up you have there.
What is the size of your room sir?
-
I would suggest you audition the Zensor 1s as well.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Where can I audition this model? :)
-
Too bad, Dali Zensor 3 is out of stock so I got the MA BX2 instead which cost for only 13k due to 30% promo sale. Almost bought the B&W 685 S2, but bought the Grado 325e headphone instead for the amount difference with BX2. Excited to hear it tomorrow paired with PM6005/CD6005 and will use ordinary electrical wire for the speaker and the ordinary interconnect included in Marantz for the meantime while waiting for Cal's interconnect/speaker cables. Exciting times. yahooo!

Kay Architectural Audio din
Same place as the Zensor 3.
I think you can get the LCR of the 1s within your 20k budget.
Be warned. You will fall in love with the center channel when you audition

Sorry for the late reply, been very busy these fast few days. Here is my finished setup.
Marantz PM6005/CD6005 - from Sights & Sounds
Monitor Audio Bronze BX2 - from Sights & Sounds
Sigma AV Racks - ordered and pickup from SM Appliances Store
Phanter Voltage Surge Protector w/ Line Filter - from Handyman
Fiio X5 - from Egghead (temporary digital source via Profigold IC)
SMSL M8 DSD DAC - on the way from Aldrin aka arudorin
Speaker cables and IC - from CAL (speaker cables on the way due to out of stocks plug)
Speaker Stand - DIY from turbokiller
What's needed:
Imarflex UDR-2000VA 1500W - from Sound & Vision
Mini Laptop w/ installed Foobar2000 - for my source
Now, overall it is a good purchase. I didn't expect that BX2 is too bassy due to it's dimension smaller than Zensor 3 and B&W 685 S2 which is my 1st and 2nd choice respectively. Maybe because of the size of my music room which is very small with only 1.5 meters wide. With the sounds, I desired for a little more highs and mids which I can get if I have more space as the bass will dissipate more. Another thing is that my reference for comparison is my X5/X12 + ATH MX50s (too rich in mids)/Grado RS325e (very neautral w/ impact in all frequency, thumbs up and did not regret my decision to get it) so it is not fair. It is still in burn-in period and will improve more overtime especially once I connect Cal's IC and speaker cables. The question is, am I happy? Definitely yes.

great review! congrats on completing your setup. :)

@junji
I think you will benefit from bass traps..I know I did..my Dentons were bassy too (in my place) when I listened to them..bass traps solved that for me..acoustics in the room really affects the SQ of speakers..that's why when all else fails get a head phone hehehe

Thanks for the suggestion. Is this bass trap the same with the one being sell here in pdvd marketplace like foamed egg case shaped? From where I can avail them and where can I position it, at the back of speaker? Sorry, I am still a newbie.
One thing I learned which is always being suggested here is to audition, the reason I am telling this is that I expect the BX2 to have more highs than the lows but found it reversed. Don't believed in youtube samples :):):) It is just hard to audition here since every store carrying different brands and the location are far from each other and even if they carry the brand, the models that you want is out of stocks so it is better also to list down alternatives. So it's better to communicate with the store first in order not to waste time and energy.
-
The good thing about audition is that you will really have an idea about how will it sound, however since their room and your room are different the outcome will possibly be different. I'll try to post a sample picture of the bass trap.

Nice setup.. Pareho pa tayo ng rack he he he
-
Nice start. Madami pa iimprove sa tunog yan pag fully broken in. The suggestion to acoustically treat your room is correct because of the narrow dimension. Mirror points lagyan mo din to address the first reflections. Happy listening and congrats!
-
@disturbed, yan pala yun. Sige include ko yan sa next purchased ko.
@pa3ck608, thanks for the heads up.
@courage, maganda at stable naman kaya thumbs up.
@Bemermeister, sorry if kung na-hijack ko na yung thread mo ha. Just want to share the experience with others like us who are looking for <= 20k speakers. Any update with your planned purchased. I suggest to audition the BX2 na rin specially that MA have a promo discount of 30%, baka magustuhan mo nakamura ka pa. Kung meron na, feedback naman ng impression. Thanks.
-
Hi Sir Junji,
Thanks for sharing! Always a pleasure hearing from other members.
I have not yet continued to auditions pero I'm looking to audition the Dali Zensor 3 sa Architectural Audio soon.
I am not a fan of the Tannoy DC6 Revolution bookshelf speakers. They are detailed naman pero sounded thin to my liking.

how much na discounted bx5 sir? Kasama sa sale?
-
13k is the discounted price for bx2, yes kasama bx5 sa discounted pero di ko na naitanong.
-
how about the PSB B6?
-
I have not auditioned the PSB B6 yet but I will put that in my list.
My busy schedule has denied me the chance to go around and audition the different bookshelf speakers recommended by you guys.
So far here are what I have listened to:
A Audio Titus Gold BS
Tannoy DC6 Revolution
Wharfedale Dentons 80th Anniversary
Polk Audio Rti A1/A3
-
add this to the list:
A Audio Apocalypse BS ;)

^Auditioned Aaudio speakers yesterday:
Apocalypse BS, Titus FS and Philippians FS.
Wow! Wala akong mapili. Lahat maganda. =)

Conan,
I listened to the Mezzo 2 in 5th avenue paired to a CA Azur 340A.
They didnt have a demo 640A / 840A at the time.
The guys in 5th Ave have been telling me that they just unpacked the speakers the night before.
I'm sure it would have sounded different once broken in, or perhaps in a different match up (preamp+power amp setup)
In hindsight, now that I have a CA Azur 650A, I am curious to a 'what might have been' : driving it direct on the CA or fed through the RB1582

Does anyone here had an experience listening to Acoustic Energy Aegis Neo One?
