Title: LG 42LS5700 -- It was Good while it Lasted
Post by: dm1179 on May 08, 2015 at 02:31 PM
Share lang ng sad news!

Our LG 42LS5700 is not working properly anymore. After power on, the LG logo appears and then the screen slowly fades to black. The sound is okay but there is no picture display. You will hear the audio from the source being played but no video. The TV was purchased on 18 March 2013 so the 2 year warranty already expired. Purchase price was P33,800.

My father brought the TV to LG service center in our province. Test fee was P500.

The technician said need to replace the panel. Cost of panel is P24,000 and need to pay P1,500 labor fee. So total will be P24,000 - P500 + P1,500 = P25,000.

P25,000 / P33,800 = 73.96% of original price paid

So I decided not worth it to repair anymore. At that price, we can already buy a brand new TV of similar size (or even 50" TV in the case of the Toshiba 50L2300 -- P22,190 Sale price).

Nakakalungkot lang dahil this TV was only used lightly and never abused. (We have another TV in the living room that is used more often.) It can pass as brand new physically. Meron pang plastic cover ang body. No dead pixel. Nakasaksak rin siya sa AVR so no power issue.

I am not mad at LG as the TV did reached 2 years without an issue. But I am disappointed as the TV did not met my expectation for longer service life. After all, the 42LS5700 was the top-of-the-line 2D model of LG during its launch.

To compare, our Panasonic 32" LCD TV purchased in 2009 is still working flawlessly to date although with another owner na. We sold it after we purchased the LG TV. We expected same life span if not more from LG but it did not deliver. So now goodbye my 42LS5700. It was good while it lasted.

End of sharing. Thanks for reading.

For me, Beyond Economic Repair na 'yan. Good decision to get a brand new TV. 'Yung LG 42LS5700 ko which was purchase December 2012 is still working properly. Madalas gamitin. Feeling sulit ako kung aabot pa 'to ng 2 to 3 years.

@VenoM_Unleashed: Kung umabot man lang ng 3 years, I won't feel that disappointed na. Just past 2 years is too short. My sister also has same TV model. Okay pa naman ang 42LS5700 nya. Naswertihan lang siguro ako.

Yeah, so true.

Symptoms before it went out lagi na lang mawala picture tapos mag turn off. Mag turn on for a while then off ulit.

Nothing to lose if we try it. Thanks.

Sorry to hear this. My old 42" I bought in 2011 never gave me any probs for the 4 years I've used it daily, my one complaint lang is nag dirty screen effect na yung panel, but nothing that totally bothered me. I just upgraded to their 50" LB6500 last December, so now my old one's just naka tabi.

i know the feeling. i bought a panasonic 42" plasma, 3 years lang, nasira na. "A" board daw problema kaso walang mahanap na part kasi phased out na ang plasma.
But my 7 year old 32" panasonic lcd is still working. Mas ok sana kung yung mas luma ang nasira. But i think 3 years is too short a lifespan. Dapat at least 5 years.  Sakit sa damdamin at pitaka.

Just throwing this out there and maybe it can help.
Try to research for possible faults with the symptoms showing.
It seems to be a usual case for this model but I've not read enough to be sure that it's repairable w/o replacing the panel itself.

His opinion was that this TV was very close to needing a recall from LG over this failure.

Okay mines up and running again. They replaced one of the boards.

Board that can fix this? Possibly? Again, research a bit more and maybe you can save your investment w/o breaking the bank.

IMPORTANT: Horizontal lines on the screen are virtually NEVER caused by a bad T-con board. Horizontal lines indicate a defective LCD panel (screen).

I only did this research w/in 15 mins so my recommendations might be way off.

Sad to hear. My 42LS5700 still works fine. Yung remote controls lang mukhang madungis.

I bought mine last August 2012 for 42k, i think? Mahal din. Going 3years na din in a few months. I hope it holds up. Nasa sala lang. Really solid model, IMO

Kuha ka ng 2nd opinion. There are other shops na madiskarte ang tech. Since out of warranty naman pwede mo na ipa check sa iba

I agree. Since unit is already out of warranty, maybe best to have it check with different repair shops near your place. Authorized shops then to charge quite high fees ... Baka meron na man less than 10k for the repairs...

UPDATE:

We purchased Sony 48R552C for P33,000 this weekend at Saver's Appliance. We compared with Sony 50W800B side-by-side and the wife could barely see the difference in PQ. Since sila naman talaga ang gagamit ng TV, we went with the cheaper model.

Some considerations: Motionflow does not matter to us because we use a dedicated HTPC with SplashPro player for playing HD movies. We also do not need Smart features and 3D. (The LG 42LS5700 is a Smart TV but we never ever used its Smart features.)

Tested for dead pixels in the store and found none. Tested for abnormal backlight bleed around the frame and found none. Tested playing 1080p movies via external HDD and worked fine.

Only problem with Sony TV is DTS audio. There was no sound when I played a movie with DTS audio. No biggie, will be connecting to Marantz receiver to remedy this.

Sony 50W800B (2014)
- Smart LED TV + 3D
- 120Hz panel, Motionflow XR 480Hz
- Built-in Wi-Fi
- P44,500 cash / Sony SRP: P55,599 (19.96% OFF)
- P890 per diagonal inch

Sony 48R552C (2015)
- LED TV with YouTube
- 60Hz panel, Motionflow XR 100Hz
- Built-in Wi-Fi
- P33,000 cash / Sony SRP: P41,199 (19.90% OFF)
- P687.50 per diagonal inch

One advantage of Sony 48R552C is that it is VESA mount compliant. I was able to install it immediately to my full motion, cantilever wall mount bracket. In contrast, Sony 50W800B would need special bracket or longer bolts/spacers, unless you use the TV stand.

Other thoughts: The Sony 50W800B is actually a good deal if you are looking for Smart and 3D. Some online sellers are still selling this at P49k+ though so be aware.
